Alaska Airlines Announces Addition Of Philippine Airlines As Newest Global Partner

On CNBC's &#8220;Mad Money Lightning Round,&#8221; Jim Cramer said Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>) can still go lower. &#8220;It's really well-run, so don't take this the wrong way, but the airlines are wrong to own right here because people think we're going into a travel recession.&#8221;
On the earnings front, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ALK">Alaska Air Group</a> reported worse-than-expected first-quarter financial results on April 23 and issued second-quarter adjusted EPS guidance below estimates.
Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KMB#NYSE">KMB</a>) did not make the quarter, Cramer said. &#8220;I was a little bummed out. Let's wait 'til it goes lower.&#8221;
On April 22, Kimberly-Clark posted first-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.93, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.89. Quarterly sales of $4.84 billion (down 6%) missed the street view of $4.88 billion.
CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CRWD#NASDAQ">CRWD</a>) is &#8220;terrific&#8221; for the long term, Cramer said. &#8220;We had to take some profits the other day, too, because it just got too big.&#8221;
CrowdStrike showcased Charlotte AI Agentic Response and Charlotte AI Agentic Workflows on Monday, marking progress in modern SOC operations.
When asked about Dillard&#8217;s, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DDS#NYSE">DDS</a>), he said, &#8220;You're going to be struggling to make money in any other retailer other than Costco (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COST#NASDAQ">COST</a>). I don't think Dillard's is a place to be.&#8221;
According to recent news, Dillard&#8217;s amended and extended its $800 million senior secured revolving credit facility on March 17.
Nextracker Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NXT#NASDAQ">NXT</a>) is &#8220;not great, not bad,&#8221; Cramer said. "This is technology all made in America. So, I think you're ok.&#8221;
Nextracker, meanwhile, will announce its fourth quarter fiscal 2025 financial results after the closing bell on Wednesday, May 14.

Jim Cramer: This Tech Stock Is 'Not Great, Not Bad', Alaska Air Can Still Go Lower

American Airlines Group Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>), Alaska Air Group Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>) and Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>) reported their quarterly results broadly in-line with the tone set by Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>) and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>), according to JPMorgan.
The Airlines Analyst: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/58485285ee7bf6000154d235/jamie-baker">Analyst Jamie Baker</a> maintained ratings, while cutting price targets.

<li>Alaska Air Group: Overweight, price target cut from $89 to $73</li>
<li>Southwest Airlines: Underweight, price target trimmed from $30 to $23</li>

"Low-end domestic demand is under significant pressure, premium and international remain the bright spots for now, and loyalty returns continue to help cushion the aggregate impact to earnings," Baker said in a note.

American: The company reported adjusted loss of 59 cents per share, slightly better than consensus of 69 cents per share, the analyst stated. "Passenger revenue was roughly flat, on capacity down 1pt YoY," he added. While American Airlines continue to make progress in recapturing its historical share of indirect revenue by yearend, its margin performance has been flat, Baker said.
Alaska Air Group: The company's adjusted loss came in at 77 cents per share, worse than its January guidance of between 70 and 50 cents per share, the analyst stated. "Management cited a 3pt top-line disruption from demand softness during the quarter, which (all things being equal) would have placed the company comfortably ahead of its guidance," he wrote.
Southwest: The company reported an adjusted loss of 13 cents per share. That&#8217;s better than the consensus of 18 cents per share. Total EBIT minus cost of initiatives implies an EBIT loss of $100 million — $447 million worse than in 2024, Baker said.

Airlines Face 'Significant Pressure': Analysts Adjust Expectations After Q1 Results

The airline industry is back in the headlines, though not in a way that would make investors cheer. Another batch of earnings releases from large U.S. carriers—American Airlines (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>), Southwest Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>), and Alaska Air (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>)—has brought a somber message: the skies are cloudy for forward-looking guidance. As these airlines take back their 2025 outlooks in response to escalating macroeconomic uncertainty, investors holding <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">airline-themed ETFs</a> are replanning their altitude.
ETFs In Focus
These are the three most susceptible ETFs most exposed to the turbulence shaking up the skies:
U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JETS#NYSE">JETS</a>)
This is the most widely held airline ETF among most investors, providing access to a portfolio of global airline shares, with a heavy U.S. bias. JETS has large stakes in Delta Air Lines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>), United Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NYSE">UAL</a>), American, and Southwest—all of which have watched their share prices spiral downward more than 20% on an average so far into 2025. Needless to say, JETS has declined sharply year to date, almost 23%, both as a result of weaker domestic demand and increasing economic headwinds.

iShares Transportation Average ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IYT#BATS">IYT</a>)
Although not airline-centric, IYT does have high exposure to airlines, along with freight and logistics stocks. The fund has been stressed by weakness within the passenger air travel component, as air travel demand between the U.S. and other countries especially Canada, has been affected due to tariffs and is susceptible to additional challenges if the slowdown permeates to cargo and global travel.
SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTN#NYSE">XTN</a>)
XTN provides equal-weighted exposure to the wider transportation space, including regional carriers. It&#8217;s more attuned to under-the-radar participants such as Alaska Air, which have fallen harder than their big-cap peers because they&#8217;ve been more dependent on domestic routes—now the weakest part of the market.
Guidance Cuts
Although first-quarter results were largely better than projected, the actual theater of action is in the empty forecast columns.
American Airlines topped revenue expectations and reported a smaller-than-expected Q1 loss, but <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44982328/american-airlines-flies-into-uncertainty-q1-revenue-miss-2025-outlook-pulled-but-debt-plan-on-track">withdrew its full-year forecast</a>, stating visibility is limited and clouds are dense.
Southwest seconded that view, regardless of record Q1 revenue, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/travel/25/04/44968055/southwest-airlines-tosses-out-profit-guidance-amid-macroeconomic-uncertainty-shares-slide-despite-better-than-expected-q1-results">withdrawing earnings guidance for 2025 and 2026</a> after experiencing demand weaken over the course of the quarter.
Alaska Air fell <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44976464/alaska-air-hit-by-demand-dip-in-q1-loss-skips-fy25-guidance-update-amid-uncertainty">short on revenue and sharply reduced Q2 expectations</a>, stating it is anticipating a 6 percentage point revenue hit from soft demand.
If investors were expecting clarity, they received fog instead.
Macro Headwinds And Tariff Crosswinds
Aside from consumer demand, geopolitics and trade tensions are also blowing fiercely. Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump have contributed to growing economic uncertainty, with spillovers affecting airline sentiment. 
Boeing, meanwhile, is seeking to reroute dozens of undeliverable planes originally destined for Chinese customers. &#8220;We have many customers who want near-term deliveries, so we plan to redirect the supply to the stable demand. And we are not going to continue to build aircraft (and ship it) to customers who will not take them,&#8221; Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg explained <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44970516/boeing-adjusts-strategy-amid-trump-tariff-fallout-ceo-kelly-ortberg-says-wont-build-aircraft-for-customers-who-will-not-take-them-as-china-halts-deliveries">in the earnings call.</a>
So far this year, American Airlines has fallen 43%, Southwest is down 22%, Delta and United have slid 30% and 28%, respectively.
The domestic demand drag is evident across the board. Airlines are hoping that international and premium segments, currently holding up, don't catch the same cold, as expressed by TD Cowen analyst Tom Fitzgerald, <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/american-southwest-airlines-earnings-stock-price-498f8b9c">cited </a>by Barron&#8217;s. But that's a risky bet in a macro environment where clarity is more elusive than a free in-flight upgrade.
What's Next For Airline ETFs?
Investors are struggling with mixed signals: strong near-term performance in certain segments vs. gigantic uncertainty to come. Fitzgerald warned that airline stocks are likely to remain range-bound until more definitive economic data are available, citing risks to second-half 2025 and 2026 earnings estimates.
While airline ETFs might still be a long-term bargain—currently, investors are in a holding pattern. Until economic skies brighten, it may be best to have that seatbelt tightly buckled.

U.S. stock futures were lower this morning, with the Dow futures falling around 200 points on Thursday.
Shares of International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IBM#NYSE">IBM</a>) fell sharply in today's pre-market trading after the company reported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/04/44966124/ibm-shares-slide-despite-better-than-expected-q1-details">first-quarter financial results</a>.
IBM reported quarterly earnings of $1.60 per share, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $1.40. Quarterly revenue of $14.54 billion beat the analyst consensus estimate of $14.4 billion.
IBM shares dipped 7.3% to $227.62 in the pre-market trading session.

IBM, Nokia, Alaska Air Group And Other Big Stocks Moving Lower In Thursday's Pre-Market Session

Alaska Air Group, Inc.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>) shares are trading lower premarket on Thursday. On Wednesday, the company reported&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;sales&nbsp;growth of 41% year over year (Y/Y) to $3.14 billion, which missed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/n44968566/alaska-air-group-reports-first-quarter-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">the street view of&nbsp;$3.17 billion</a>.
The Seattle-based company disclosed capacity (available seat miles) growth of&nbsp;3.9%&nbsp;Y/Y, around 1 point higher than expected, thanks to lower-than-expected flight cancellation rates.
Operating revenue per available seat miles (RASM) increased by&nbsp;5.0%&nbsp;Y/Y in the quarter.

Unit revenues improved 5.0% Y/Y,&nbsp;despite a 3-point impact from softening demand. Unit costs rose&nbsp;2.1%&nbsp;Y/Y, at par with the company's expectations. This includes the new&nbsp;Alaska&nbsp;flight attendant contract, which was ratified in February.
The economic fuel price per gallon came in at $2.61&nbsp;in the first quarter, reflecting moderating crude oil prices partly negated by higher West Coast refining margins.&nbsp;
Adjusted EPS loss&nbsp;of 77 cents, missed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">the consensus loss of&nbsp;74 cents</a>. The loss reflects a softening demand environment and macroeconomic factors.
The overall results reflect strong initial progress on the integration of Hawaiian Airlines. In the first quarter, Hawaiian unit revenue increased 8.8% year over year, and Hawaiian's adjusted pretax margin improved 14 points year over year.
CEO&nbsp;Ben Minicucci&nbsp;said, "Amid the economic uncertainty, our teams controlled what they can control and delivered results that strengthen our foundation for the long term."
The company generated&nbsp;an operating cash flow of&nbsp;$459 million&nbsp;in the first quarter. As of March 31, 2025, the company's unrestricted cash and marketable securities stood at&nbsp;$2.5 billion.
Buyback: The company repurchased 1.8&nbsp;million shares of common stock for around&nbsp;$107&nbsp;million in the&nbsp;first quarter, bringing year-to-date repurchases to $149&nbsp;million as of&nbsp;April 22, 2025.
Outlook: Alaska Air projects a&nbsp;second-quarter&nbsp;adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.15 to $1.65 vs. a consensus of&nbsp;$2.37, a capacity (available seat miles) growth of 2%-3%, and RASM <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">flat to down low single digits</a>.
The company says that while overall bookings have stabilized, the guidance for Q2 reflects an expected revenue impact of around six points due to recent demand softness.
As previously indicated, the second quarter is expected to see the most cost pressure, but unit costs are anticipated to improve sequentially in the second half of the year.
Due to ongoing economic uncertainty and market volatility, the company is not providing an update to FY25 guidance at this time.
The company says it continues to expect to deliver&nbsp;$1 billion&nbsp;in incremental profit by 2027.
