A growing number of cryptocurrency companies are preparing to enter the U.S. banking system, propelled by a policy shift under President Donald Trump aimed at <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/12/42644568/institutional-crypto-adoption-for-real-this-time-says-messari">integrating digital assets into mainstream finance</a>.
What Happened: Firms like Circle (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/">USDC</a>) and BitGo are planning to apply for bank charters, The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/currencies/crypto-knocks-on-the-door-of-a-banking-world-that-shut-it-out-082b3968">reported</a>, quoting sources.
Coinbase (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>) and Paxos are also exploring regulatory approvals to operate with similar authority. 
These developments follow the Trump administration's commitment to establishing the U.S. as a global leader in digital assets, including through new legislation targeting stablecoin oversight.
Recent bills moving through Congress propose a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/content/44516699/u-s-congress-advances-stablecoin-regulation-with-the-introduction-of-the-stable-act">regulatory framework for stablecoins</a>, mandating that issuers secure banking licenses or charters.
These digital tokens, typically pegged to fiat currencies, are used as a bridge between volatile cryptocurrencies and traditional money.
Some crypto firms are aiming for national trust bank or industrial bank charters that are essentially licenses that would allow them to hold customer deposits or issue loans. 
Others are seeking limited permissions specifically for issuing stablecoins.
BitGo, a crypto custody firm and reserve manager for the Trump family's stablecoin project USD1, is nearing the submission of its bank charter application, according to individuals familiar with its plans.
Anchorage Digital, currently the only federally chartered crypto bank in the U.S., has invested tens of millions of dollars to meet regulatory standards.

International banks are taking note. 
A consortium including Deutsche Bank (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>) and Standard Chartered (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SCBFF#OTC">SCBFF</a>) is exploring expansion into the U.S. crypto market. Deutsche Bank declined to comment, and Standard Chartered did not respond.
However, caution persists in some corners. 
KeyCorp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KEY#NYSE">KEY</a>) CEO Chris Gorman noted potential competitive threats from crypto and cited regulatory concerns, particularly around transparency and anti-money laundering enforcement. "It's hard to trace," he said.

Premium tea drink maker&nbsp;Chagee Holdings Ltd.&nbsp;(CHA.US)&nbsp;<a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/04/17/3063193/0/en/Chagee-Holdings-Limited-Announces-Pricing-of-Initial-Public-Offering.html">raised</a>&nbsp;$411 million (3 billion yuan) this week in the biggest IPO this year by a Chinese company, setting itself apart from a crowded group not only by being first to list in the U.S., but also with its traditional approach to one of China's most famous drinks.
The company raised the sum by selling 14.7 million American depositary shares (ADS) to investors for $28 each and could raise an additional $61.6 million if its underwriters exercise an overallotment option. That makes it the biggest U.S. IPO by a Chinese company since robotaxi operator Pony AI raised about $400 million in a Nasdaq IPO last November. Chagee's stock rose 15.9% on Thursday, its first trading day, valuing the company at $5.95 billion.
Founded in 2017 in Southwest China's Yunnan province, famous for its pu'er-style teas, Chagee has set itself apart from its peers with its simpler, more purist approach to China's tea culture that dates back thousands of years. The company likes to say that such culture is "in its bones," with most of its drinks consisting of milk and tea in various combinations.
That differs markedly from its rivals, many of those listed in Hong Kong, that add a wide range of ingredients to their products, from tapioca pearls, to cheese foam and fruit. The company also emphasizes traditional themes in its packaging and store decorations, including a logo inspired from Consort Yu, a famous figure in Peking Opera.
Chagee is also famous for its homier, more comfortable stores, with some likening that to the approach used by global coffee giant Starbucks. Unlike most of its rivals, whose shops often consist of little more than a window where customers can grab their order and go, Chagee's shops contain seating areas where people can consume their drinks, reminiscent of Starbucks' "third place" concept.
Also like Starbucks, the company prides itself on its treatment of employees, and invited some of those everyday workers, along with some of its franchisees, to ring the opening bell when its shares started trading on the Nasdaq.
Chagee is very much like its peers in reporting explosive growth over the last few years, riding a wave of popularity for their high-end tea drinks among China's growing urban class. Its store count jumped about sixfold from 1,087 shops in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 6,440 at the end of 2024, with franchisees accounting for 97% of those. The company's revenue has grown at a similar rate, rising to 12.4 billion yuan ($1.7 billion) last year from 492 million yuan in 2022.
The company recorded its first profit of 803 million yuan in 2023, and the figure more than tripled last year to 2.51 billion yuan.
In addition to its core China operation, Chagee also sees global expansion as a major new frontier going forward. The company disclosed in its prospectus that it is aiming to operate 1,000 to 1,500 global stores by the end of this year, and has also separately confirmed it plans to open its first U.S. store in Los Angeles later this year.

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) has launched the second-generation ‘Shenxing' fast-charging battery.
What Happened: The company announced the second-generation battery at an event in Shanghai, reported Reuters on Monday. Shenxing batteries would power over 67 new EVs this year, CATL's Chief Technology Officer, Gao Huan, said.
The new battery would enable a range of 520 km or approximately 323 miles on a 5-minute charge. The battery can also be charged from 0% to 80% in 15 minutes in cold weather.
The report also shares that, besides the new battery, CATL also unveiled a new brand called Naxtra for the company's Sodium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion batteries could help reduce the risk of a fire in EVs, some experts suggest.

"This is the first use of the Permitting Council's transparency authority, and we look forward to showcasing the many benefits the Federal Permitting Dashboard can bring to critical infrastructure projects," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/04/trump-administration-advances-first-wave-of-critical-mineral-production-projects/" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Manisha Patel, Acting Executive Director at the Permitting Council. "It's a vital tool for interagency coordination and efficient decision-making," he added.
The newly designated projects include major proposals across the country such as Perpetua Resources' (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PPTA#NASDAQ">PPTA</a>) Stibnite Gold and Antimony Project in Idaho, Rio Tinto's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>) Resolution Copper Project in Arizona, Hecla Mining's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HL#NYSE">HL</a>) copper and silver mine in Montana, and Albemarle's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALB#NYSE">ALB</a>) expansion of the Silver Peak lithium mine in Nevada. Also included are Standard Lithium's direct lithium extraction site in Arkansas, Warrior Met Coal's metallurgical coal mine in Alabama, and the McDermitt Lithium Project in Oregon. Others include the Caldwell Canyon Phosphate Mine in Idaho, Lisbon Valley Copper in Utah, and Michigan Potash.
These projects are now subject to the FAST-41 framework, which provides enhanced interagency coordination and a centralized online dashboard for monitoring permitting progress. While the program doesn't waive environmental laws, it significantly improves process transparency and helps enforce clearer timelines.
The U.S. depends heavily on foreign sources, particularly China, for critical minerals such as lithium, copper, and rare earth elements, crucial for electric vehicles, military equipment, and consumer electronics. Lengthy permitting processes, which can take anywhere from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/07/39870803/us-mine-development-delays-among-worlds-longest-second-only-to-zambia" rel="noreferrer noopener">10 to 29 years</a>, have hindered domestic production, forcing reliance on geopolitical competitors. By comparison, countries like Canada and Australia approve mines in two to five years, giving them a significant advantage in attracting investment and securing supply chains.
Even in Canada, where permitting is relatively faster, both leading candidates for prime minister—Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre—have campaigned on promises to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44732611/canadian-politicians-promise-faster-project-approvals-ahead-of-april-28-elections" rel="noreferrer noopener">reduce mining bureaucracy</a> further.
"For too long, duplicative processes and regulatory paralysis have delayed the development of the minerals America needs," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/trump-administration-adds-key-mining-projects-fast-41" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Adam Suess, Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management. "By cutting red tape and increasing accountability, we're making it clear that under President Trump, the United States is serious about being a global leader in critical minerals."
