U.S. markets ended a choppy week on a cautious note, as modest gains through Thursday reversed sharply on Friday after escalating tensions between Israel and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45922022/trump-issues-stark-warning-to-iran-to-make-a-deal-after-israels-strikes-on-nuclear-sites-just-do-it-before-its-too-late">Iran rattled investor sentiment.</a>



Major equity indices, which had been hovering near all-time highs, pulled back as geopolitical risks surged back to the forefront.



The S&amp;P 500 – as tracked by the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) – ended 1.1% lower for the week, falling below the 6,000-point threshold. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Oil's Back In Focus—And Gold Is Eyeing New Highs</h3>



Late Thursday, Israel launched &#8220;Operation Rising Lion,&#8221; a sweeping aerial campaign targeting approximately 100 Iranian nuclear and military installations, reportedly killing several high-ranking officials. Iran responded by launching over 100 drones toward Israeli territory and vowed severe retaliation, raising fears of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/topics/25/06/45933856/iran-fires-ballistic-missiles-at-israel-tel-aviv-struck">broader regional escalation.</a>



Oil markets reacted swiftly: West Texas Intermediate crude surged past $70 a barrel, capping a double-digit percentage gain for the week — <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/06/45924154/the-120-oil-shock-just-became-a-real-risk-are-we-back-in-2022">its strongest in years.</a>



On the economic front, the much-feared tariff-driven inflation failed to materialize in May, with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/45881899/inflation-resumes-climb-in-may-but-tariffs-have-yet-to-hit-consumers">consumer</a> and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/45902987/producer-inflation-rises-less-than-forecasts-in-may-jobless-claims-signal-labor-market-cracks">producer</a> price reports generally coming in broadly below expectations.



Under normal circumstances, such data would have bolstered hopes for Federal Reserve rate cuts and likely sparked a rally on Wall Street. But the rally failed to materialize as soaring energy prices clouded the disinflation narrative.



Sector-wise, energy stocks led the weekly gains, buoyed by the oil rally, while financials underperformed. Oracle Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/price-target/25/06/45924707/oracle-to-rally-around-11-here-are-10-top-analyst-forecasts-for-friday">delivered a standout performance</a> – climbing by over 20% on its best weekly return since 2001 – following stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings and upbeat guidance.



Currency markets were also in motion. The U.S. dollar came under renewed pressure, with a key index tracking the greenback falling to its lowest level <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/45906982/dollar-hits-27-month-lows-the-fed-should-cut-next-week-economist-says">in over three years.</a> 



Investors appeared increasingly uneasy about the long-term trajectory of U.S. fiscal policy, particularly as President Donald Trump's sweeping "One Big, Beautiful Bill" heads to the Senate.



Safe-haven demand for precious metals remained robust. Gold extended its powerful 2025 rally, supported by both geopolitical instability and persistent worries over the U.S. debt burden. The precious metal is on track to deliver its strongest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/guidance/25/06/45928561/gold-biggest-boom-in-decades-and-investors-are-still-missing-out">first-half performance since 1982.</a>



Silver also inched higher, hitting the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst-color/25/06/45847216/silver-supercycle-you-never-have-enough-of-it-hedge-fund-analyst-says-as-50-level-looms">highest levels since 2012</a>.&nbsp;



All eyes now turn to the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week. While no change to interest rates is expected, markets will scrutinize any shifts in the Fed's economic projections. In March, policymakers forecast 2025 GDP growth at 1.7% — down from 2.1% in December — and a 2.7% average inflation rate, revised upward from 2.5%.

Soft Inflation Data Meets Middle East Turmoil: This Week In Markets

Iran launched ballistic missiles toward Israel late Friday local time, triggering a wave of retaliatory fire and igniting fears of a broader conflict. The strikes marked the start of what Iranian state media called "The Hard Retaliation," a direct response to Israeli air raids on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45922022/trump-issues-stark-warning-to-iran-to-make-a-deal-after-israels-strikes-on-nuclear-sites-just-do-it-before-its-too-late">more than 200 targets.</a>



According to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/13/trump-urges-iran-to-reach-nuclear-deal-before-there-is-nothing-left-.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNBC</a>, video footage showed missiles striking Tel Aviv while Israeli defense systems were activated to intercept the barrage. The Israel Defense Forces urged civilians to take shelter immediately.



The IDF earlier confirmed the launch of "Operation Rising Lion," striking Iranian nuclear and military facilities in Isfahan and Natanz to degrade long-range missile capabilities.



NBC News reported that Israeli Brigadier General Effie Defrin said the operation was aimed at preventing Iran from retaliating with drones or missiles. Explosions were also reported near Iran's Fordo nuclear site, with state media confirming the death of IRGC Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salam.



Israel's Defense Ministry claimed most IRGC leadership was killed, but CNBC could not independently verify this. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retribution, stating that Iran's response would not be "half-measured."

Despite mounting violence, a U.S. official said Friday morning that the U.S. remained open to talks. However, Iran later suspended nuclear negotiations originally scheduled in Oman for the weekend.



Trump, speaking earlier Friday, urged Tehran to reach a deal "before there is nothing left." The International Atomic Energy Agency reported no radiation spikes at targeted sites.



Amid surging <a class="" href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45931068/missiles-and-firewalls-defense-stocks-surge-as-israel-iran-tensions-ignite">Middle East volatility</a>, defense and cybersecurity stocks are rallying as investors respond to the unfolding conflict between Israel and Iran.



Shares of Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>), RTX Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RTX#NYSE">RTX</a>), and Elbit Systems Ltd. Iran Fires Ballistic Missiles At Israel, Tel Aviv Struck

There's never a dull moment in the Elon Musk Cinematic Universe. Still, the story took an even more dramatic turn last week when the Tesla CEO engaged in a high-profile <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45807968/trump-signals-truce-with-elon-musk-after-online-feud-its-going-very-well-never-done-better">social media spat</a> with the President of the United States.



While Trump and Musk&#8217;s relationship always seemed destined for a turbulent end, both men took to their respective social media networks to burn bridges and reduce them to smoldering embers.



Lots was said, and many threats were made. Musk has since deleted his most inflammatory accusations, but Trump has shown no sign of wanting to forgive and forget.



We won't get into the personal attacks except to say that during the peak of the fight, Trump threatened to cut funding to SpaceX and Musk's other companies. At the same time, Musk threatened to decommission the vital Dragon spacecraft. Musk has ramped up attacks on Trump's signature tax bill, which is currently floating through Congress, calling it (amongst other things) bloated and pork-riddled for adding more than $2 trillion to the deficit.

Caught in the middle of this high-profile feud are thousands of employees and investors who now have no idea which way the wind is blowing. How legitimate are the threats to cut Musk's funding? How many of the unfriendly clean energy provisions in the new tax bill will make it into the final version? With the broader market strong, plenty of stocks are not at risk of losing 10% on a social media post, so there's no need to pick a side in this fight. Here are two securities with ties to Elon Musk to avoid until this grudge blows over.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tesla Inc.&nbsp;</h2>



Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) is finally moving forward with the release of its RoboTaxi. Still, despite the hype surrounding this, Tesla will be playing catch-up to Google's Waymo for the foreseeable future. In the here and now, TSLA stock faces significant headwinds from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Trump is eager to get through Congress. The bill would significantly alter the EV landscape by adding or eliminating the following:



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The $7,500 tax credit for new EVs under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D would be phased out, as would the $4,000 tax credit for used EVs under Section 25E. The phaseout could begin as early as next year.</li>



<li>A new annual registration tax of $250 on EVs and $100 on hybrids for the Highway Trust Fund. This provision is seen as making EV owners pay their fair share for road use as they use less gas and, therefore, pay less in taxes for highway maintenance.</li>



<li>Cancellation of provisions in the Zero-Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) program allowing the sale or transfer of clean energy tax credits. Tesla earns approximately $2 billion annually from selling tax credits and has generated revenue from clean energy tax credit transfers since 2014.</li>



<li>Repeal of Section 30C tax credits for charging and alternative fuel infrastructure. This provision could significantly hinder the rollout of Tesla charging stations, which enable the company to generate revenue from non-Tesla electric vehicles.</li>



<li>Repeal of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) subsidies for battery production and clean energy infrastructure, which could affect Tesla products like the Powerwall and Megapack batteries, as well as its solar panels</li>
</ul>



Musk is right to be concerned about the bill's additions to the deficit, but dismantling EV incentives likely rankles him the most. Tesla sales have been plummeting across Europe due to Musk's political meddling. Chinese automakers like BYD have now eclipsed Tesla's EV market share in China. The daily stock chart doesn't look too enticing either.

The stock's May rally appeared to be hitting a wall in June before the jousting with Trump entered the public eye as shares declined for eight consecutive sessions before breaking the streak on Monday. However, Monday's close puts the stock at the 200-day moving average, which could serve as resistance, given that the 50-day is still trading below the 200-day. The MACD also shows crumbling momentum, indicating that traders are starting to look for greener pastures. A successful RoboTaxi rollout (or the survival of some EV tax credits) could trigger another round of upward momentum. Still, the short-term prognosis for TSLA shares doesn't look promising.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Destiny Tech 100 ETF&nbsp;</h2>



The Destiny Tech 100 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DYYZ#NASDAQ">DYYZ</a>) sounds like an Elon Musk venture, but he has no hand in running this one. Instead, the Destiny Tech 100 is an innovative new closed-end ETF that seeks to provide private startup access to non-accredited investors. Usually, to invest in pre-IPO firms (like Musk's SpaceX), you need to be an accredited investor. This leaves private shares primarily in the hands of venture capital firms and high-net-worth individuals. The DXYZ fund allows anyone with a brokerage account to gain exposure to private startups like SpaceX, OpenAI, Stripe, Klarna, Discord, and more. The fund aims to hold shares in 100 private companies eventually but currently owns shares in just 22. As of this writing, over 54% of the fund's assets are tied up in SpaceX shares, including Class A, Class C, and Preferred Stock share classes. The fund being heavily invested in SpaceX presents a significant risk to investors, as Trump threatens the $15 billion in federal contracts currently on the books with Musk's space exploration firm.

DYXZ has a market cap of just over $465 million and trades about 700,000 shares daily on average. It also charges a 2.5% management fee, which reduces investors&#8217; profits more than a typical thematic ETF. The fund debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2024 at $25 per share and quickly reached $60 before plummeting to under $10 by October. Volatility has been the name of the game since, with shares rallying to new all-time highs and then taking a 50% haircut within the span of a few months. The current trend appears to be breaking down, as the price took out a multi-week support level the day Trump and Musk began fighting; the MACD shows momentum continuing to erode. 



Another potential headwind here is the revival of the IPO market, as one of the key appeals of DXYZ is its ability to provide access to companies that are not available to retail investors. That advantage could fade if more exciting private firms begin to move forward with public offerings.

BTC: Bitcoin has been marketed as "digital gold" due to its fixed supply and decentralized nature. However, its safe-haven credentials are less established.&nbsp;



Bitcoin often moves in tandem with risk assets like equities, especially during periods<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/06/45924154/the-120-oil-shock-just-became-a-real-risk-are-we-back-in-2022"> of market stress</a>.The cryptocurrency's price is also influenced by leverage and speculation, increasing its volatility.&nbsp;



"The airstrikes sent oil spiking, which jolted inflation expectations and yanked rates higher, creating a chain reaction across risk assets," said Ben Kurland, CEO at crypto research platform DYOR, per <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/12/stock-market-today-live-updates.html">CNBC</a>.

What Happened: Speaking <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/06/12/tech/nvidia-ceo-china-us-ai-chip-exports">to</a> CNN in Paris on Thursday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company will no longer include China in its revenue or profit forecasts due to ongoing U.S. export restrictions.

Adobe raised expectations for full-year 2025 revenue to $23.5 to $23.6 billion, up from prior guidance of $23.3 billion to $23.55 billion. Adobe also raised its full-year adjusted earnings guidance to a range of $20.50 to $20.70 per share, up from a prior guidance range of $20.20 to $20.50 per share.

Adobe Q2 Earnings: Revenue Beat, EPS Beat, Raised FY Guidance, Continued Investments In AI Innovation

As the U.S. dollar has slumped to its lowest level in over two years, emerging market stocks rallied in near-perfect inverse fashion—a trend that may be just <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets">at its early stages.</a>



The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EEM#NYSE">EEM</a>), which holds more than 800 EM stocks, posted its ninth consecutive daily gain—the longest streak since the fund&#8217;s inception in 2016—reaching levels last seen before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.



&#8220;As an investor, I want to operate under the assumption that… the dollar is going to be devaluing," Otavio Costa, macro analyst at Crescat Capital, said in an exclusive interview with Benzinga. 



"You want to buy natural resources, you want to buy hard assets, but you also want to buy emerging markets in a big way,&#8221; he added.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The US Debt Problem Is Now a Dollar Problem</h3>



At the core of Costa's view is the widening gap in interest payments between the U.S. and its developed peers.



The U.S. spends about 5% of its gross domestic product on interest—when combining federal and local levels—far exceeding developed peers like Germany, Japan, and Canada, where interest costs are about 1%.



Because the U.S. has far less fiscal flexibility, Costa believes it will be forced to cut rates more aggressively than other economies.



For Costa, the implication is clear: &#8220;That's going to translate into interest rates differentials contracting and causing the dollar to fall."

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">US Valuations Are Stretched, EM Stocks Look Cheap</h3>



Costa emphasized the valuation gap between U.S. and emerging market equities.



 "The Cyclically Adjusted Price-to-Earnings (CAPE) ratio of the U.S. is about 35, one of the highest in history. You look at Brazil, and it's about 12." he said.



"Why would you not deploy capital there?&#8221;



Costa sees emerging markets, hard assets and undervalued foreign equities as the likely beneficiaries of this rotation. 



He sees particular value in Brazil, not just in equities but in fixed income as well. "In Brazil, the equity market looks attractive, the bond market looks very attractive," Costa said.



Among developed markets, Costa is particularly bullish on Canada. He sees the Canadian dollar—historically linked to oil and natural gas—on the verge of a breakout, fueled by its commodity exposure and underweight positioning in global portfolios.



"The Canadian dollar is a contrarian play that could benefit from U.S. weakness and commodity strength," he said, adding that Canadian mining companies could also enjoy capital inflows.



He added that capital markets are already signaling a shift. 



"Argentina starts doing well all of a sudden after politics changes… India is doing quite well. Japanese equities doing better than the U.S. Now you're seeing European equities outperform U.S. equities."



"These things are just starting to occur," he said. "They're big moves."

The Dollar Is Crumbling, And Hedge Fund Analyst Says A New Global Trade Is Brewing

The greenback hasn&#8217;t been this weak in over two years, as mounting evidence of disinflation and cracks in the labor market stripped away its appeal, prompting a louder call from economists for the Federal Reserve <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">to cut interest rates.</a>



The U.S. dollar index—a trade-weighted gauge measuring dollar strength broadly tracked by the&nbsp;Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>)—dropped to 97.60 on Thursday, the lowest since late March 2022.



The slide came after a one-two punch of economic reports showed inflation cooling among consumers and producers while jobless claims surged to multi-year highs.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Broadly Undershoots Forecasts</h3>



Thursday's data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed the Producer Price Index rose 2.6% in May<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/45902987/producer-inflation-rises-less-than-forecasts-in-may-jobless-claims-signal-labor-market-cracks"> from a year earlier,</a> matching expectations but reflecting only a modest rise from April's revised 2.5%. On a monthly basis, PPI increased just 0.1%, below the 0.2% forecast.



Core PPI, which strips out food and energy prices, cooled to 3.0% year-over-year — its lowest reading since August 2024 — and posted a minimal 0.1% monthly gain, missing the 0.3% estimate. The figures indicate that inflationary pressures in the production pipeline remain soft, despite tariff concerns.



Released a day earlier, the Consumer Price Index for May rose 2.4% annually, a slight uptick from April's 2.3% but under the consensus view of 2.5%. Monthly CPI rose just 0.1%, also below expectations.



Core CPI held steady at 2.8% year-over-year, with monthly gains easing to 0.1%, down from 0.2% the previous month and falling short of the projected 0.3%. 



These numbers reinforce the narrative that price pressures are failing to accelerate, despite lingering tariff-related risks.



Alongside subdued inflation, the labor market showed fresh signs of strain. Initial jobless claims rose to 248,000 in the week ending June 7, exceeding forecasts of 240,000. More significantly, continuing claims climbed to 1.956 million — the highest level since November 2021.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economists Urge Fed To Cut Rates</h3>



Neil Dutta, economist at Renaissance Macro, said on Bloomberg TV, "The fact that continuing claims are basically running at cycle highs tells you that permanent layoffs are going up… The labor market is cracking."



Dutta indicated that the Fed is now behind the curve. "They should be focusing on the data that's coming in… The train may have already left the station."



The expert warned that "Fed policy is too tight" and urged the central bank to act. "Next week," he said, though he added he doesn't expect the Fed to move in June.



Referencing a prior misstep, Dutta added, "Powell said he was a little bit late when he cut in September. Then what does that make him now?"



&#8220;The Fed is whistling past the graveyard," he added. 



Dutta also emphasized the connection between housing and inflation. "You look at metro areas like Dallas, Phoenix—these are places with significant home price weakness and very benign inflation," he said. 



"If the housing market got worse after 100 basis points of cuts, Fed policy is too tight."



Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank, said the latest data &#8220;make a federal funds rate cut later this year more plausible,&#8221; although he warned that fiscal stimulus and slower labor supply growth may still keep unemployment stable, limiting the Fed&#8217;s incentive to ease.



Stephen Juneau, economist at Bank of America, was more cautious. "Overall, this would be a good number for the Fed, but it&#8217;s hard to take too much signal given the uncertainty tariffs pose around the inflation path."
