Risk sentiment deteriorated sharply in the second half of the week after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imported automobiles, compounding concerns <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44506717/trumps-25-auto-tariff-raises-will-cast-shadow-on-interest-rates-says-economist-tesla-investor-gary-black-says-president-found-further-ways-to-push-the-economy-into-recession-today">about rising inflationary pressures.</a>



On Wednesday evening, the White House revealed plans to impose a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44517885/trump-slaps-25-tariffs-on-autos-what-it-means-for-your-next-car-purchase">25% tariff on auto imports,</a> in addition to a set of reciprocal tariffs expected to be unveiled next week. The administration cited national security risks as the justification for the measures, which may also extend to auto parts by May.



The policy shift sent shockwaves across the automotive industry. Michigan-based giants General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) posted steep losses in the wake of the announcement. In contrast, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) — both of which manufacture all their vehicles domestically — proved more resilient.



According to Goldman Sachs estimates, the tariffs could push vehicle prices up by $5,000 to $15,000, adding significant cost <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44515578/trumps-25-tariff-set-to-hike-imported-car-prices-up-to-15000-higher-goldman-sachs-warns">pressure on American consumers.</a>



The market impact didn't stop at autos. Broader sectors were also dragged lower amid fears Trump could escalate trade tensions next week with key commercial partners, especially as the U.S. trade deficit <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44513963/us-gdp-growth-upwardly-revised-in-q4-trade-deficit-slightly-narrows-as-auto-exports-soar-in-february">remains near record highs.</a>



Tariff tensions are now bleeding into inflation data. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge — the core Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — rose 2.8% year-over-year in February, surpassing expectations of 2.7%. The unexpected acceleration further complicates the Federal Reserve's case for near-term rate cuts.



But the worst surprise came Friday. The University of Michigan's consumer survey revised inflation expectations even higher. Americans now expect inflation to average 4.1% over the next five years, up 0.2 percentage points from earlier estimates and the highest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">level since February 1993.</a>



Overall consumer sentiment plunged to its lowest level since November 2022, as households grow increasingly uneasy about the labor market outlook.



Amid the prevailing uncertainty, gold reaffirmed its status as a safe-haven asset, climbing to new record highs by week's end.



Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44524354/us-debt-to-explode-past-world-war-ii-highs-threatens-growth-for-decades-cbo-says">Congressional Budget Office delivered</a> another wake-up call: there&#8217;s no end in sight to America's growing debt burden. The national debt is projected to surpass its World War II peak by 2029, and soar to 156% of GDP by 2055 — with no signs of slowing thereafter.

Wheaton Precious Metals Corp (NYES: WPM): Mining stocks like Wheaton Precious Metals saw increased interest from readers with gold at record prices and President Donald Trump encouraging more mining. The stock trades near all-time highs with a recent strong fourth quarter showing the company beating earnings per share for the fourth time in five quarters. The company missed revenue estimates in the fourth quarter, which was the third straight quarter of missing analyst estimates. Wheaton reported record revenue, adjusted net earnings and operating cash flow in 2024. The company has 18 operating mines and 28 development projects. A five-year outlook from the company calls for annual production to increase by 40% to 870,000 gold equivalent ounces. With gold prices at all-time highs, the stock could be one in the sector that investors keep an eye on, given the record 2024 and five-year growth outlook.

With investors looking for exposure to gold and other precious metals, Newmont could continue to see shares trade higher. The stock was up around 2% on the week and shares are up 34% over the last year.

Deere &amp; Company's next earnings results will come around May. The company has beaten analyst estimates for earnings per share in 10 straight quarters and beaten revenue estimates in more than 10 straight quarters. In February, the company's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43692928/deeres-q1-earnings-beat-forecasts-yet-sales-and-profits-slide-amid-declining-equipment-demand">first-quarter results </a>beat estimates, but several segments saw double-digit declines on a year-over-year basis. Guidance for the full year shows some recovery in the company's main operating segments.



Deere &amp; Company&#8217;s stock was down on the week, but shares are up 13% over the last year. The stock is one to watch if industrials show a turnaround or strength going forward.

Benzinga's 'Stock Whisper' Index: 5 Stocks Investors Secretly Monitor But Don't Talk About Yet

The anchor underpinning trust in the U.S. monetary system, that is the confidence in the Federal Reserve's ability to keep consumer price changes on track, is facing its most severe test in decades, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">as inflation expectations spiral.</a>



Investors appear to be running out of patience, pouring capital into the one asset that has historically acted like a magnet during moments of economic uncertainty and when the anchor of price stability shows signs of corrosion.



Gold prices – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – are rising with unrelenting force, smashing historical records week after week, just as consumer inflation fears experience their sharpest surge in more than three decades.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Is Gold Sending A Warning Signal?</h3>



According to the latest data from the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, 5- to 10-year inflation expectations jumped to 4.1%—a level unseen since 1993. 



That&#8217;s a stark divergence from the 20-year average of about 3%. Meanwhile, one-year inflation expectations surged to 5.0% from 2.6% just three months ago, as consumers and producers alike face the brunt of higher costs and persistent supply chain disruptions, compounded in part by President Donald Trump&#8216;s tariffs.



"The spike in long-term inflation expectations is really quite shocking," said Robin Brooks, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, in a post on social media platform X.



The spike in inflation expectations is being fueled in part by the front-loading of imports ahead of anticipated tariff escalations, contributing to a staggering $300 billion trade deficit in just two months, according to macroeconomic research firm The Kobeissi Letter.



In February, the U.S. Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index—the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge—rose 2.8% year over year, slightly above expectations of 2.7%, undermining hopes of imminent rate cuts from the Fed.



Combined with deteriorating consumer sentiment, this backdrop has some analysts warning about a potential stagflationary environment—where stagnant growth meets persistently high inflation.



Longtime gold bull and economist Peter Schiff wrote on X, "Despite constant media hype and the Trump Administration establishing a Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) Strategic Reserve, Bitcoin is down 11% YTD. Gold is up 18% YTD. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/03/44543709/peter-schiff-tells-bitcoin-hodlers-to-get-a-clue-as-gold-outpaces-digital-gold">Get a clue HODLers."</a>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Gold Patterns Flash Bullish Signals</h3>



Whether investors focus on technical patterns, macro fundamentals or seasonal trends, gold is radiating strength from every possible angle.



Technically, gold's rally has entered a parabolic phase. Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that a "cup-and-handle formation that took 13 years to develop has seen its target reached within one year. Truly amazing run."

Data revealed Friday by Bank of America&#8217;s chief investment strategist Michael Hartnett shows gold-related investment products saw a record $3.2 billion inflow during the week ending March 21, the largest on record, reflecting a rapid repositioning by investors as inflation fears intensify.



Goldman Sachs analyst Daan Struyven said that in &#8220;tail-risk scenarios,&#8221; if fears about the Federal Reserve's independence or the U.S. dollar's reserve status escalate, central bank demand for gold could surge to 110 tonnes per month.



&#8220;[With] ETF holdings to rebound to pandemic-era levels by end-2025, and positioning to reach the top of its historical range, gold could plausibly trade above $4,200/toz by end-2025 and exceed $4,500/toz within the next 12 months. We view this as a very low-probability event, but include it to illustrate the nonlinear upside to gold prices,&#8221; Goldman Sachs said.



Seasonality could also be a tailwind. According to data analytics firm Seasonality.ai, gold tends to rally between April 1 and April 13, with a 100% win rate over the past 10 years during this specific window. 



The average return in that period has been 2.8%, adding yet another bullish layer to the metal&#8217;s short-term outlook.

'My Spidey Tingles' — Gold's Surge Has Some Investors On Edge

A planned nationwide protest known as "Tesla Takeover" is happening on Saturday with the goal of pushing Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO Elon Musk out of the government in his current role helping the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/03/44242181/elon-musk-admits-juggling-between-tesla-doge-is-difficult-says-running-businesses-with-great-difficulty-a">Department of Government Efficiency.</a>



An event organizer told Benzinga about the reasons behind the protests, the changes they are advocating for, and their concerns that non-violent protesters are being unfairly linked to violent demonstrators and criticized by Musk and President Donald Trump.



About Tesla Takedown: While many have heard about the keying of Tesla vehicles and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44403377/elon-musk-calls-it-extreme-domestic-terrorism-after-website-publishes-data-on-us-tesla-owners">lighting Tesla vehicles </a>on fire at a select number of Tesla dealerships across the country, Americans may be unfamiliar with the non-violent Tesla protests happening weekly or biweekly at dealerships.



Adam Sheridan, a volunteer organizer with the Cooper River Indivisible<a href="https://www.cooperriverindivisible.org/"> non-profit</a>, told Benzinga that Tesla Takedown is the result of organic growth of nationwide protests.



"Tesla Takedown was something a lot of people were thinking of on their own," Sheridan told Benzinga.



Sheridan said the goal of <a href="https://actionnetwork.org/event_campaigns/teslatakedown">Tesla Takedown</a> and his group is to get Musk out of the government. On March 29, protests will happen at Tesla dealerships across the country.



Benzinga reached out to Tesla to comment on this story and did not hear back at the time of publication.



"Elon Musk seems to have purchased the American government," Sheridan said.



Believing Musk's influence stems largely from his wealth, particularly through Tesla, protesters chose Tesla dealerships as their primary demonstration sites.



"We wanted to bring that fight directly to the front lines," Sheridan added.



Sheridan said the protests are growing in number and the initial Feb. 22 event had 350 people, blowing past his expectations of 20 people.



"We knew we were onto something there."

Fighting Against Elon Musk: Sheridan told Benzinga that it&#8217;s important to emphasize that the protest is against Elon Musk, not Tesla, its workers, or its shareholders.



"It's a protest against Elon Musk. What we want is we want Elon Musk out of the government," he said.



Sheridan said that Musk is "unelected" and nobody voted for him in the 2024 election.



The protest organizer said that groups are supportive of electric vehicles and some protestors even drive Tesla vehicles as they can't afford to trade them in currently. Sheridan drives a Ford F-150 Lightning himself and says his wife drives a Honda Prologue.



If Tesla were to fire Musk, Sheridan said the protests might stop and protestors could become customers.



Sheridan also said that hurting Tesla's stock price isn't a goal, noting that Tesla's stock price has been "divorced from market fundamentals" for a while, given its premium price-to-earnings ratio compared to competitors and similar companies.



After several weeks, Sheridan said the protests are "definitely working" and have caught the attention of Musk and others.



Sheridan said the goal is to make the case publicly that Musk is a "malignant influence in our government." The protest organizer cited Musk&#8217;s involvement in cuts to programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and the Department of Education.



The March 29 Tesla Takedown Day represents the growth of individual events and the desire to present a united front, Sheridan said.



Who Funds the Protests?: Sheridan said he and other protest leaders get a good laugh out of rumors that billionaires are funding their efforts against Musk.



"It's really funny to us when we hear Elon say George Soros is funding us," Sheridan told Benzinga.



Sheridan said he's been a volunteer for years for various causes and doesn't get paid and even has to pay for his own food and protests signs.



The protest leader brushes off Musk's notion that ActBlue is funding the protests, saying Musk is a smart guy who founded PayPal, which means he should know that ActBlue is a payment processor.



"I know he knows this. He's just spreading the propaganda. His general strategy is just dishonesty."



Non-Violent Protests: Sheridan is quick to highlight the difference between his group and other Tesla protests versus the violent acts being committed at select locations in a limited fashion.



"We absolutely condemn any acts of violence or vandalism," Sheridan said.



Sheridan said his group draws inspiration from the Civil Rights Movement and believes those engaging in violence and vandalism are hurting his and others&#8217; cause.



At Tesla Takedown events and other non-violent protests, guidelines are handed out to participants. Sheridan said there are also de-escalators to manage interactions with counter-protesters and safety personnel to ensure people stay off roads and don't impede traffic.



As the Tesla protests gain steam and get more coverage, Sheridan said concerns about counter-protesters and retaliation have grown.



"We do worry a lot about violence against us."



While many protests against Tesla have remained non-violent, President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have criticized them. Sheridan said the characterization of non-violent protesters as domestic terrorists &#8220;fuels people&#8221; to continue protesting.

The Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation came in hotter than expected on Friday. Experts are weighing in on how the latest data could affect<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44535109/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-in-february-casting-doubt-on-near-term-rate-cuts"> the road ahead.&nbsp;</a>



The Details: The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 2.5% year-over-year, matching January's reading and economist forecasts of 2.5%. On a monthly basis, headline PCE rose 0.3%, in line with estimates.



However, core PCE climbed 2.8% from a year ago, up slightly from January&#8217;s 2.7% and above economists' expectations of 2.7%.&nbsp;

Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank, said that February's spending data confirms a slowdown in consumer activity in the first quarter of 2025 and predicted that real GDP will be slower in the quarter as well.&nbsp;



The Federal Reserve is in a tight spot with interest rates as the economy appears to be slowing and inflation is likely to pick back up in 2025.&nbsp;



"If tariffs rise on April 2 as pledged, inflation will accelerate in coming months," Adams said.&nbsp;



Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist for RSM, said that "inflation improvement has stalled out" and warned about tariffs and trade policies affecting the economic data ahead.&nbsp;

Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial, highlighted February's core PCE index as the hottest print in more than a year and said the savings rate rose to 4.6%, as consumers grow more cautious about the future.



Roach sees income growth as supporting the economy for now, but sees trouble ahead if income growth slows.&nbsp;



"Stable real disposable income growth will likely provide a buffer for the economy nervous about a trade war and sticky inflation. But if income growth falters, the economy will be at greater risk," he said.&nbsp;



Markets React: All three major indexes were down sharply in midday trading Friday as markets digest the PCE data and worse-than-expected consumer <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">sentiment survey</a> released earlier in the day.&nbsp;President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs continue to roil markets with more expected next week. 



The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), tracking the S&amp;P 500, was down 1.9% and the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), tracking the Nasdaq 100 index, was down 2.6% at the time of publication Friday.

'Inflation Will Accelerate In Coming Months' If April 2 Tariffs Take Effect, Economist Warns

Markets faltered on Friday, with Wall Street reeling as investors hurried to shed risk in the face of mounting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44537936/consumer-inflation-expectations-skyrocket-in-march-hit-highest-levels-in-32-years">inflation and tariff uncertainties.</a>



The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.1% by 1:30 p.m. trading in New York, on track to end the week with losses. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2.6%, and the Dow fell 1.7%. 



All members of the Magnificent Seven group were in the red, with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) marking the widest drops, both down 4.4%.



Earlier on Friday, the Fed's favorite inflation gauge – the core Personal Consumption Expenditure price index – rose 2.8% on a yearly basis in February, surprising estimates of 2.7%. 



Investor anxiety deepened following the latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumers, which showed 5-year forward inflation expectations jumping to 4.1% — a 0.2-point increase from prior estimates and the highest reading since February 1993. As stocks fell in unison, a flight to safety ensued, sending gold up 1% to a record-breaking $3,090 per ounce. Treasury bonds also rallied, with yields declining across all maturities. 



Price action in commodities was mixed with oil down 1% and natural gas up 2.4%. Sentiment in crypto also took a sharp hit, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down by 4% to below $84,000, flipping to weekly losses.

Inflation Fears Spark Risk-Off Sentiment As Magnificent 7 Drop: What's Driving Markets Friday?

The preliminary reading had already raised eyebrows among investors, yet the final data turned out even worse than feared. 



Five-year ahead inflation expectations — which reflect American consumers' perceptions of more structural inflation concerns — jumped to 4.1% in March, according to the final report released by the University of Michigan.



This marks an upward revision from the preliminary estimate of 3.9%, bringing the gauge to its highest level since February 1993.



Inflation concerns for the next 12 months were also upwardly revised from 4.9% to 5%, marking the highest since July 2022.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consumer Sentiment Sinks In March, Inflation Fears Go Haywire</h3>



The University of Michigan's headline consumer sentiment index was revised down to 57.0 in March from a preliminary 57.9, plunging from 64.7 in February. This is the weakest reading in consumer sentiment since November 2022.



&#8220;Consumer sentiment confirmed its early month reading and fell for the third straight month, plummeting 12% from February,&#8221; Surveys of Consumers director Joanne Hsu, said in a Friday&#8217;s note. 



The subindex tracking consumer expectation was downwardly revised from 54.2 to 52.6, hitting the lowest since July 2022. 



&#8220;The expectations index plunged a precipitous 18% and has now lost more than 30% since November 2024,&#8221; Hsu added. 



The subindex for current conditions witnessed a minor improvement from 63.5 to 63.8, yet still marking a nearly 3% decline from February. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Labor Market Concerns Rise</h3>



The report also highlighted growing concerns about the labor market. Consumers remain uneasy about potential economic fallout from current policy developments. Strikingly, two-thirds of respondents now expect unemployment to increase over the next year — the highest level since 2009. 



This trend underscores a critical vulnerability, as resilient labor markets and steady incomes have been the main pillars sustaining consumer spending in recent years.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>



Earlier this month, Fed Chair Jerome Powell dismissed the University of Michigan's survey-based inflation expectations as an "outlier," downplaying its significance.



Investors, however, appear to disagree.



Major U.S. equity indices dropped sharply on Friday following the release of the final University of Michigan inflation data, which triggered an even stronger market reaction than the hotter-than-expected reading of the Fed's preferred inflation gauge earlier in the day. The S&amp;P 500 — tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — fell 1.1%, while the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) underperformed with a 1.3% decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also slid 0.9%.



Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) led losses within the S&amp;P 500 index, plunging 15% after reporting weaker-than-expected earnings. 



Excluding Lululemon, consumer discretionary stocks — particularly those tied to the travel and leisure sectors — bore the brunt of the negative sentiment following the University of Michigan consumer data.



Shares of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) sunk 3.1%, heading for a fourth straight session of declines, while MGM Resorts International (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MGM#NYSE">MGM</a>) plummeted 4.3%. 



Within Magnificent Seven stocks, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMNZ#NASDAQ">AMNZ</a>) was the underperformer, down 3%, followed by Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>), down 2.2%.

Consumer Inflation Expectations Skyrocket In March, Hit Highest Levels In 32 Years

Risk appetite is on track to end the week on a negative note. Investors continue to trim their equity exposure amid the threat of tariffs and a higher-than-expected increase in the Fed&#8217;s most <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44535109/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-in-february-casting-doubt-on-near-term-rate-cuts">closely watched inflation metric.</a>



The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index remained at a 2.5% year-over-year pace in February. Yet, the more telling core PCE measure, which strips out food and energy and is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, rose from an upwardly revised 2.7% in January to 2.8%, outpacing expectations.



The uptick in core inflation dealt a blow to investor hopes for near-term interest rate cuts, reinforcing the view that the Fed is in no rush to ease policy amid persistent price pressures. 



Adding to the jitters, earlier this week, Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on all foreign auto imports stirred fears of retaliatory trade measures and higher consumer prices.



Investors are now bracing for a potential announcement of "reciprocal tariffs" on April 2, which could further escalate trade tensions and pressure profit margins across multiple sectors.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Slide, Safe Havens Shine</h3>



The S&amp;P 500 index opened lower, with the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) down 0.5%. The Nasdaq 100 – as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – fell 0.8%. The Dow eased 0.3%. 



Within mega-cap stocks, Mondelez International Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MDLZ#NASDAQ">MDLZ</a>) was the strongest performer, up 1%, while Target Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) led among the laggards, down 2.5%. 



Gold prices, as mimicked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), jumped 0.7% to trade above $3,070 per ounce, setting a new record high. Investors turned to traditional safe havens in reaction to the inflation surprise and rising geopolitical uncertainty.

The latest AAII Investor Sentiment Survey shows a sharp deterioration in retail investor confidence.January. 



&#8220;The bull-bear spread of the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) sentiment survey has fallen to the lowest level since October of 2022 as those considering themselves bearish far outnumber those that are expecting gains in the equity market over the next six months,&#8221; said Equity Clock in its latest a monthly outlook. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Tensions Rattle Automakers</h3>



Trump's proposed 25% auto tariff sent shockwaves across the U.S. auto industry this week, with legacy carmakers bearing the brunt. 



Shares of General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>) plunged about 6% and 4%, respectively, in Thursday's session. 



They were down 0.8% and 1% during early trading Friday, respectively.



In stark contrast, U.S.-based EV manufacturers—building all their vehicles domestically—emerge as winners. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Rivian Automotive Inc. Economist Craig Shapiro has said that the Federal Reserve has been &#8220;gaslighting the public,&#8221; after the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Tom Barkin said Thursday that inflation is not &#8220;de-anchored&#8221;.



What Happened: Barkin, while speaking to the reporters after his speech on Thursday, acknowledged that the U.S. economy has been through a significant inflationary period.



"That means the expectations have been loosened—not de-anchored, loosened—for both price setters and price receivers,&#8221; he added.



Reacting to this, Shapiro, a macro strategist at the Bear Traps Report, said, &#8220;Federal Reserve trying out a new word to continue gaslighting the public into the idea that inflation expectations are still well-anchored.&#8221;

For now, an uncertainty-driven drop in sentiment looks like it could quiet demand, said Barkin during the speech. &#8220;The outlook once the fog lifts will in part depend on how long it lasts,&#8221; he added.



Barkin also countered Chairman Jerome Powell&#8216;s tariff-induced &#8220;transitory inflation&#8221; remark and told the reporters that he wouldn&#8217;t assume that there would just be a one-time increase in price levels, which could be overlooked.

Barkin described this situation as finding your way through a dense fog. &#8220;With all this change, a dense fog has fallen. It's not an everyday, &#8216;forecasting is hard&#8217; type of fog. It's a &#8216;zero visibility, pull over and turn on your hazards&#8217; type of fog.&#8221;



Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers called it "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44403939/larry-summers-says-federal-reserve-in-hard-position-with-stagflationary-shock-ahead-of-fomc-decision">the most difficult challenge</a>&#8221; faced by the central bank amid higher prices and fewer jobs.



He held the ongoing tariff battle waged by President Donald Trump responsible for this challenging situation, saying, &#8220;This is what tariffs do.&#8221;

Federal Reserve Is 'Gaslighting The Public,' Warns Expert As Richmond Fed President Says 'Inflation Expectations Have Loosened, Not De-Anchored'

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge rose more than anticipated in February, underscoring the bumpy road back to the 2% target and throwing cold water on expectations for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">imminent interest rate cuts.</a>



According to data released Friday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index increased by 2.5% year-over-year, matching both the previous reading and economist forecasts of 2.5%. On a monthly basis, headline PCE rose 0.3%, in line with estimates.



Stripping out volatile food and energy prices, the core PCE price index—the Fed's favorite metric for inflation—climbed 2.8% from a year ago, slightly up from January's upwardly revised 2.7% and above expectations of 2.7%. 



The monthly core PCE figure accelerated to 0.4%, surpassing the 0.3% consensus estimate.



The hotter-than-expected inflation data could potentially dent market optimism for near-term monetary easing. 



Before the release, fed futures markets had priced in a roughly 70% probability of a rate cut by June and cumulatively 63 basis points of cuts by December, according to CME FedWatch data.



In a sign of consumer resilience despite sticky inflation, personal spending bounced back in February, rising 0.4% month-over-month after a 0.3% contraction in January, but missing expectations for a 0.5% increase. 



Personal income growth accelerated to 0.8%, above January's 0.7% and well beyond the 0.4% estimate. 



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: Wall Street Flashes Red Lights </h3>



Futures on major U.S. stock indexes fell in premarket trading Friday. The S&amp;P 500 contracts slid 0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.5%, and Dow Jones futures declined 0.2%. Premarket moves pushed the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) near the flatline for the week. 



The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) –&nbsp;slightly trimmed session gains, up 0.1%. 



In the bond market, yields remained broadly steady. The 2-year Treasury yield – a gauge for interest-rate expectations – hovered around 4%.

Fed's Favorite Inflation Gauge Rises More Than Expected In February, Casting Doubt On Near-Term Rate Cuts

U.S. stock futures fell on Friday after two consecutive days of decline on Wednesday and Thursday. Futures of major benchmark indices were lower in premarket trading.



Stocks slid as investors digested the new auto tariffs levied on foreign cars and auto parts.



President Donald Trump also warned that he would impose much higher tariffs on the EU and Canada if they retaliate against his planned tariffs.



In a Truth Social post, he threatened large-scale tariffs to counter any economic harm from the two allies. While he has recently hinted at targeting them in his upcoming "Liberation Day" tariffs, no direct actions have been taken yet.



Traders will watch out for the Federal Reserve&#8217;s preferred measure of inflation, the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, specifically the core PCE, which excludes food and energy prices due to their volatility.



With the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.32% and the 2-year at 3.99%, the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a> shows markets pricing in an 88.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve maintaining current interest rates through its May meeting.

Cues From Last Session:



Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 ended in the red on Thursday, with energy, communication services, and information technology stocks leading the losses. However, health care and consumer staples stocks managed to buck the trend, closing higher.



European automakers were hit hard, with Mercedes-Benz Group AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MBGAF#OTC">MBGAF</a>) sliding 1.7% and Porsche Automobil Holding SE (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/POAHF#OTC">POAHF</a>) dropping 2.3%.



In earnings news, shares of TD Synnex Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNX#NYSE">SNX</a>) tumbled around 14% after the company reported its first-quarter results. Verint Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VRNT#NASDAQ">VRNT</a>) also fell sharply, dropping more than 13% following worse-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings and weaker-than-expected FY26 EPS guidance.



On the economic front, U.S. initial jobless claims dipped by 1,000 to 224,000 for the week ending March 22, slightly below market estimates of 225,000. Meanwhile, fourth-quarter GDP growth was revised up to an annualized 2.4% from 2.3%, and U.S. wholesale inventories increased by 0.3% in February, following a 0.8% gain in January.

Insights From Analysts:



According to the analysts at BlackRock, the weight of non-U.S. equities in global equity indexes has been on the rise since the end of January. This is caused by the policy uncertainty, which has shaken the investor belief in the U.S. growth and equity strength, pulling the S&amp;P 500 down more than 3%, the note added.



&#8220;The selloff has been exacerbated by investors rapidly pulling out of popular trades – like the tech-heavy momentum equity style factor and cyclical trades that were betting on a boost from growth from potential U.S. deregulation and tax cuts.&#8221;



&#8220;We stay overweight U.S. stocks on a six- to 12-month tactical horizon. Yet prolonged uncertainty could hurt both U.S. and global risk assets,&#8221; the note adds.



Meanwhile, as the uncertainty around tariffs mounts, Michael Townsend, managing director of legislative and regulatory affairs with Schwab, said that &#8220;The White House has been sending mixed signals.&#8221;



&#8220;First, saying that they would be imposed on all countries, then more recently saying they will initially focus on 10 to 15 countries with which the U.S. has big trade deficits. The plan also was to announce tariffs on automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors next week, but those reportedly will be delayed. The uncertainty is driving companies and investors crazy.&#8221;

The director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), Phillip Swagel, stated that President Donald Trump&#8216;s tariffs are projected to gross $800 billion over the next decade.



What Happened: Phillip Swagel, the director of the CBO, told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2025/03/27/cbo-director-phillip-swagel-we-have-to-get-the-deficit-to-a-level-thats-sustainable.html">CNBC</a> on Thursday that the existing tariffs, not including the ones set to commence on April 2, could generate $800 billion in customs duties over the next decade.



President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;has declared&nbsp;a 25% duty on all&nbsp;non-U.S. manufactured cars, set to be enforced from April 2. This move follows a delay in implementing&nbsp;a series of earlier tariffs.



However, the overall impact of this figure on the federal budget remains uncertain. The tariffs could trigger retaliation from other nations, potentially damaging U.S. firms selling products overseas. Furthermore, U.S. companies might pass on price hikes due to sourcing raw materials subject to tariffs to consumers, possibly causing a surge in inflation.
