<p>Wall Street saw a rebound in risk appetite on Thursday ahead of the long Easter weekend, as President <strong>Donald Trump </strong>signaled positive <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">momentum in trade negotiations.</a></p>
<p>Speaking ahead of a scheduled meeting with Italian Prime Minister <strong>Giorgia Meloni</strong>, Trump expressed strong confidence in reaching a trade agreement with the European Union. He also hinted at progress with China, stating, "We will make a good deal with China." </p>
<p>Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary <strong>Scott Bessent</strong> noted that trade talks with Japan are moving in a highly satisfactory direction.</p>
<p>By midday in New York, the S&amp;P 500 had climbed 0.9%, while the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.5%, recouping some losses after a 3% slide on Wednesday. The Dow Jones, however, slipped 0.9%, weighed down by a sharp 23% plunge in <strong>UnitedHealth Group Inc</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>) after the company slashed its full-year earnings forecast.</p>
<p>Energy stocks led the day&#8217;s gains, buoyed by rising oil prices. <strong>Exxon Mobil Corp</strong>. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) rallied 4.1%, while <strong>Chevron</strong> <strong>Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) advanced 3.5%.</p>
<p>Gold prices retreated nearly 1% after a strong multi-day rally, pressured by a firmer U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed six basis points to 4.34%.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) edged up 0.9% to $85,000.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 17, 2025

<p>U.S. major indices traded lower at midday Wednesday, pressured by sharp declines in tech and semiconductor stocks after Washington tightened chip <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">export restrictions to China.</a></p>
<p>The U.S. government has barred <strong>Nvidia Corp.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) from selling its H20 chips to China — a move that could wipe out an estimated $5.5 billion from the company's projected quarterly revenue. Nvidia shares slid nearly 7%.</p>
<p>Other chipmakers also felt the heat. <strong>Advanced Micro Devices Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) dropped 6% as its MI308 chips fall under the new licensing requirements.</p>
<p>The<strong> iShares Semiconductor ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) sank 3.4%, extending the sector&#8217;s losses. Adding to the drag, Dutch chip equipment giant <strong>ASML Holding N.V.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) missed quarterly revenue estimates, sending its shares down 5%.</p>
<p>On the macro front, March retail sales surprised to the upside, rising 1.4% month-over-month — topping forecasts of 1.3% and marking the strongest monthly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44837237/march-retail-sales-post-highest-surge-in-over-two-years-as-us-consumers-anticipate-tariff-jitters">gain since January 2023.</a></p>
<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar saw renewed selling pressure, with the dollar index dipping back below 100. Treasury yields were little changed, with the 10-year yield holding steady near 4.33%.</p>
<p>Gold continued its stellar run, surging 2.5% to a fresh record high of $3,320 per ounce as demand for safe-haven assets remains robust.</p>
<p>In commodities, oil prices rebounded sharply, with WTI crude climbing 2% to $62 a barrel. <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also edged up 1.3% to around $84,500.</p>
<p>All eyes are now on Fed Chair <strong>Jerome Powell</strong>, who is set to speak at the Economic Club of Chicago later this afternoon.</p>

<p>Wall Street gained ground by midday trading on Tuesday, as investor concerns over the economic impact of trade tensions continued to ease following recent signs that the Trump administration was taking <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44812727/bessent-says-tariffs-on-china-are-far-from-a-joke-dismisses-treasury-dumping-fears">a more conciliatory approach.</a></p>
<p>All major indexes were in positive territory, with tech stocks leading the way thanks to strong performances by <strong>Netflix Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) and <strong>Palantir Technologies Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), both rising about 6%.</p>
<p>The streaming giant climbed following a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/media/netflix-aims-to-join-the-1-trillion-club-fdacb250">Wall Street Journal report</a> that it plans to double revenue by 2030, citing sources. Netflix is set to release its first-quarter earnings on Thursday after market close.</p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 has now recovered nearly 80% of the losses suffered after Trump's tariff announcement on April 2.</p>
<p>Among sectors, financials led the gains, climbing 1.3%, supported by strong earnings reports from<strong> Bank of America Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) and <strong>Citigroup Inc. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>), which surged 4.3% and 3.8%, respectively.</p>
<p>The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) rebounded 0.5%, aiming to end a five-day losing streak, while Treasury yields declined further, easing fears of a potential sell-off of U.S. assets by foreign investors. Yields on the 10-year Treasury fell five basis points to 4.33%, following an 11-basis-point drop on Monday.</p>
<p>In commodities, gold edged up 0.4% to $3,223 per ounce, while oil prices slipped 0.8% to $61 per barrel. Natural gas dropped 1.6% to $3.25 per million British thermal units, approaching its lowest level since mid-December 2024.</p>

<p>Wall Street pared early morning gains by midday Monday, as investor caution returned despite a temporary easing in U.S.-China trade tensions. While the initial market reaction was positive, especially in tech, enthusiasm faded as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the trading session progressed.</a></p>
<p>Over the weekend, the White House announced a provisional exemption for smartphones and semiconductors from China&#8217;s proposed 145% trade tariff. These items will instead face a 20% levy—linked to fentanyl-related enforcement—until sector-specific duties are finalized.</p>
<p>The development triggered a strong premarket rally in technology stocks. Yet, those gains were sharply trimmed by midday amid broader geopolitical and policy concerns.</p>
<p>During a White House meeting with El Salvador President <strong>Nayib Bukele</strong>, President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> said he plans to impose tariffs on pharmaceutical imports to boost domestic manufacturing. </p>
<p>He reiterated a hardline stance on Iran, warning of severe consequences if Tehran develops nuclear weapons, but also suggested &#8220;flexibility&#8221; in tariff negotiations, emphasizing a desire not to harm U.S. businesses.</p>
<p>Defensive and domestic-oriented sectors such as real estate, utilities, and consumer staples outperformed broader markets. In contrast, consumer discretionary was the only sector trading in negative territory.</p>
<p>Treasury yields dropped significantly, reflecting increased demand for U.S. government debt and easing fears of foreign liquidation. The 2-year yield fell 10 basis points to 3.87%, while 10-year benchmark yield dropped 7 basis points to 4.42%.</p>
<p>Gold pulled back 1% to $3,200 per ounce, pausing after a three-session rally. Crude oil fell 0.8% to $61 per barrel, while natural gas slid 2.9% to $3.39 per MMBtu, eyeing its lowest level since last Wednesday.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was little changed at $84,000, while <strong>Ethereum</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) gained 2.1% to $1,630.</p>

<p>Experts raise alarms about Health Secretary <strong>Robert F. Kennedy Jr</strong>&#8216;s decision to fire tens of thousands of federal workers, disrupting critical health data collection and research efforts.</p>
<p><strong>What Happened</strong>:&nbsp;Kennedy&#8217;s sweeping layoffs have interrupted data collection on numerous health issues, ranging&nbsp;from cancer rates in firefighters&nbsp;to mother-to-baby transmission of HIV&nbsp;and syphilis. The cuts have also hindered research into future pandemics and the containment of current outbreaks, such as the worst measles outbreak in decades, as <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/13/abortions-cancer-in-firefighters-and-super-gonorrhea-rfk-jr-s-cuts-halt-data-collection-00284828">reported </a>by POLITICO on Sunday. </p>
<p><strong>Ursula Bauer</strong>, a former executive<strong>&nbsp;</strong>at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told Fortune, "The forced exodus of highly skilled, highly educated researchers, scientists and professionals from the federal government is really just extraordinary…It is going to take decades to rebuild."</p>
<p>The&nbsp;Department of Health and Human&nbsp;Services (HHS) has confirmed a workforce reduction of 20,000 to Fortune, a nearly 25% cut from 82,000 to 62,000. This involves leading experts and top professionals in their fields, resulting in an organizational gap with no clear replacement plan in place.</p>
<p>The cuts have temporarily blocked over $11 billion in Covid-era grants to state and county health departments, which were being used for broader public health efforts like disease tracking and addiction treatment, reported Fortune.</p>

They now warn that these cuts could have long-term implications, driving people away from careers in science and drying up the pipeline of domestic and international talent. This comes at a time when China is striving to become a biomedical and biopharmaceutical superpower.</p>

RFK Jr.'s Massive Federal Health Workforce Cut Could Take 'Decades To Rebuild,' Warn Experts: 'We Cannot Accurately Assess Whether We Are Truly Making America Healthier'

<p>Wall Street regained momentum, reversing early-session losses and pushing major indexes into positive territory by midday trading in New York, as investors welcomed upbeat bank earnings and cooler-than-expected inflation data, while largely shrugging off trade war concerns after China raised tariffs on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44756353/xi-jinping-says-there-are-no-winners-in-tariff-war-as-china-slaps-125-tariffs-on-us-goods-urges-trump-to-immediately-correct-wrongdoings">U.S. goods to 125%.</a></p>
<p>Producer prices cooled to 2.7% year-over-year in March, well below the 3.3% consensus, while the monthly figure declined by 0.4% — the steepest drop since 2023. </p>
<p>A day earlier, consumer prices also eased more than expected. However, both inflation reports predate the implementation of new trade tariffs. The University of Michigan's latest consumer sentiment index fell sharply to 50.4, its lowest since June 2022 and below expectations. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, inflation expectations surged: short-term projections hit their highest since 1990, and long-term views reached levels last seen in 1981, underscoring growing concerns over persistent price pressures. In the bond market, the 30-year Treasury yield retreated to 4.90% after briefly touching 4.99% during intraday trading. </p>
<p>The dollar pared some losses, though it remained near its lowest level since April 2022, based on a trade-weighted index. </p>
<p><strong>JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) topped first-quarter earnings estimates and issued upbeat guidance, lifting its shares nearly 3% and outpacing peers. </p>
<p>Gold prices extended their rally, jumping 1.9% to a record $3,230 per ounce — poised for their strongest weekly gain since March 2020. The surge in bullion and silver — with the latter rising over 3% on Friday — sparked strong gains in mining stocks. </p>
<p>The <strong>VanEck Gold Miners ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>) soared 5.5% on Friday and nearly 20% for the week, heading for its highest level since December 2012. </p>
<p><strong>Newmont Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), the world's largest gold miner, jumped 9% on the day and 25% on the week, marking its best weekly performance since 1998.</p>

<p>A better-than-expected U.S. jobs report for March brought renewed focus on some sector-specific <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">exchange-traded funds, or ETFs</a>. </p>
<p>Healthcare, transportation, and food retail are specific examples of how the labor market&#8217;s resilience is presenting selective opportunity in the face of wider skepticism about inflation and trade tensions.</p>
<p>The American economy created 228,000 jobs in March, well exceeding Wall Street&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/04/jobs-report-march-2025-.html">forecast </a>of 140,000 and exceeding the 12-month average of 158,000, as reported in <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">data </a>issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hiring was strongest in healthcare, transportation and warehousing, and food and beverage stores—categories in which ETF exposure may be timely for investors.</p>

<p>Health care remained a bedrock of job growth, adding 54,000 jobs during March. This was consistent with the industry&#8217;s 12-month average. Employment additions were dispersed across ambulatory services (+20,000), hospitals (+17,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+17,000).</p>
<p>The <strong>Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) is one possible beneficiary of this trend. The fund is diversified with about 29.26% <a href="https://www.ssga.com/us/en/intermediary/etfs/the-health-care-select-sector-spdr-fund-xlv">exposure </a>to pharmaceuticals, 23.35% to healthcare providers and services, 22.39% to healthcare equipment and supplies, and some exposure to biotech (16.33%) and life sciences tools (8.7%).</p>
<p>Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 23,000 jobs, more than twice the 12-month average increase of 12,000. The majority of the gain was in couriers and messengers (+16,000) and truck transportation (+10,000), offset in part by a loss in warehousing and storage employment (-9,000).</p>
<p>The <strong>SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTN#NYSE">XTN</a>), which follows a broad group of U.S. transportation companies such as airlines, trucking, and logistics companies, may experience investor demand in light of better labor market trends within the sector. <strong>Fedex Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDX#NYSE">FDX</a>),<strong> Joby Aviation Inc</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JOBY#NYSE">JOBY</a>), and <strong>JetBlue Airways Corp</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBLU#NASDAQ">JBLU</a>) are among its top holdings.</p>
<p>Retail employment rose by 24,000 jobs in March, with food and beverage retailers adding 21,000 positions as workers returned from a strike. While retail hiring has remained largely flat over the past year, the March boost provides a short-term lift.</p>
<p><strong>Invesco Food &amp; Beverage ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PBJ#NYSE">PBJ</a>) provides access to 30 companies that produce and distribute food and beverage items. PBJ has 62 basis points of fee expense and the prospect of offering a defensive sector bet under conditions of macro uncertainty.</p>
<p>Though the jobs report is a sign of strength, it has qualifications. Unemployment expanded to 4.2%, just above the forecast 4.1%, because the labor force participation rate increased. Also, the mean hourly earnings expanded 0.3% from last month, but the year-over-year wage growth slowed to 3.8%, the lowest since July of 2024.</p>
<p>The positive news comes amid increased economic anxiety, with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">recently introduced tariffs by the Trump administration</a> and retaliatory measures from China fueling worries over inflation and a slowdown.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the resilience of the labor market in the core sectors provides a silver lining for shareholders. With specific exposure, ETFs such as XLV, XTN, and PBJ offer a method to ride sectoral momentum while weathering more general macroeconomic headwinds.</p>

Smart Investors Are Watching These 3 ETFs After Surprise Jobs Data Beat

<p>After a spectacular risk-on rally on Wednesday, Wall Street sharply pulled back during Thursday's trading, as investors digested the 90-day tariff pause and weighed lingering economic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">risks to the outlook.</a></p>
<p>Even a sharply lower-than-expected inflation report did little to support risk sentiment — a testament to how susceptible investors <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">remain to economic uncertainty.</a></p>
<p>The Consumer Price Index fell from 2.8% year-over-year in February to 2.4% in March, below expectations of 2.6% and marking the lowest reading since September 2024. On a monthly basis, inflation was negative by 0.1% — the first decline since May 2020.</p>
<p>While the data bolstered the case for near-term Fed rate cuts — markets are pricing in an 88% chance of a 0.25% move by June — traders remained cautious amid the ongoing tariff drama.</p>

<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> dropped 4.8% by midday in New York, erasing about half of Wednesday's historic gains, which had marked the index&#8217;s strongest rally since 2008. The <strong>Nasdaq 100</strong> tumbled 5.4%, while small caps in the <strong>Russell 2000</strong> sank 5.3%.</p>
<p>Despite the pullback in equities, traditional safe havens like<strong> Treasuries</strong> and the dollar also fell, raising concerns about waning international confidence in U.S. assets.</p>
<p>The U.S. dollar index — as tracked by the <strong>Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) — nosedived 2% to the 101 level, its lowest since late September 2024.</p>
<p>Yields on 30-year Treasuries surged by 11 basis points to 4.85%, as bond vigilantes appeared to reassert themselves —effectively flashing red signals in Washington.</p>
<p>Meanwhile,<strong> gold </strong>continued to deliver stellar returns, with bullion hitting fresh record highs of $3,175 per ounce, up 2.4% on the day. Over the past two sessions, gold has rallied nearly 6%, the biggest two-day gain since March 2020.</p>
<p>On Thursday, the White House announced that the actual tariff rate on Chinese imports will be 145%. Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget plan extending the Trump-era tax cuts. Trump welcomed the news, saying it laid the groundwork for what he called "the largest tax and regulation cuts&#8221; in American history.</p>

<p>Wall Street saw a tentative tech rebound early Wednesday, as investors begin to shrug off escalating U.S.-China trade tensions following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">a steep market selloff.</a></p>
<p>After the Trump administration announced a dramatic hike in tariffs on Chinese goods to 104% starting Wednesday, Beijing retaliated with an 84% tariff on American products. U.S. Treasury Secretary<strong> Scott Bessent</strong> defended the aggressive trade stance, claiming the impact would ultimately backfire on China.</p>
<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> took to Truth Social, writing, &#8220;BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!&#8221; </p>
<p>He encouraged investors by stating, &#8220;this is a great time to buy, DJT,&#8221; likely referring to <strong>Trump Media &amp; Technology Group Corp.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>), rather than the Dow Jones Transportation Index, which has dropped 18% since the tariff news broke.</p>
<p>Yet, broader risk sentiment remains subdued, with investors awaiting either a softer tone from the White House or a signal from the Federal Reserve—though both hopes appear to be fading.</p>
<p>By mid-morning in New York, tech stocks staged a rebound, lifting the Nasdaq 100 by 0.9%. Yet, the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remained flat, while the Russell 2000 continued to underperform.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, U.S. Treasuries were failing to provide their traditional safe-haven support amid heightened uncertainty and volatility.</p>
<p>The 10-year Treasury yield surged 10 basis points to 4.40%, triggering a sharp selloff in medium- and long-dated bonds. The popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 1.8%, extending its three-day slide to 6.6%—its worst performance since March 2020.</p>
<p>Gold prices, on the other hand, soared over 3% to $3,075 per ounce, on track for their strongest daily gain since October 2023.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also advanced, rising 1.4% to $77,289.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 9, 2025

<p><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">Most sectors are stumbling</a>, but the more defensive corners of the <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> are quietly setting up for a comeback.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s according to JPMorgan's Jason Hunter, who breaks the market into three camps: </p>
<ul>
<li>Former leaders (Tech, Consumer Discretionary, Financials)</li>
<li>Cyclical sectors (Industrials, Materials, Energy), and </li>
<li>Defensives (Healthcare, Staples, Utilities). </li>
</ul>
<p>The first two groups have cracked below key levels. Hunter predicts that even after recent bounces, they're likely to fade again before any real recovery takes hold. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reflex Bounces Or Just False Hope?</h2>
<p>Tech and Discretionary stocks saw sharp rebounds. But don't get too excited. In his latest technical chartbook, Hunter expects resistance near prior breakdown levels to stop these rallies in their tracks.</p>
<p>Tech, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Information Technology Sector Index (S5INFT Index), shows a ceiling between 3905 and 4240.</p>
<p>Discretionary? The S&amp;P 500 Consumer Discretionary Sector Index (S5COND Index) will likely fizzle between 1525 and 1660 before heading back toward support.</p>
<p>Financials aren't faring any better. The S&amp;P 500 Financials Sector Index (S5FINL Index) broke down from a classic top formation, and although it bounced, Hunter sees resistance near 767-791 acting as a lid before another leg down.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cyclicals Look Exhausted</h2>
<p>Industrials, Materials, and Energy all saw sharp pullbacks, many of which hit key support zones. Industrials, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Industrial Sector Index (S5INDU Index), are bouncing from the 960-990 zone but face resistance just above 1050. </p>
<p>Materials may be priced in a global manufacturing slump, with further downsides possibly occurring if economic data worsens. And Energy remains stuck between breakdown levels and deeper long-term support near 500-533 for the S&amp;P 500 Energy Sector Index (S5ENRS Index).</p>
<p>The takeaway? These economically sensitive sectors look bruised, and any bounce could be short-lived.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Defensives: The Quiet Comeback Kids</h2>
<p>Where's the relative strength? It's in the so-called boring stuff.</p>
<p>Defensive sectors don't show the same distribution—or investor exit—patterns that plague other groups, says Hunter. That gives them a cleaner technical setup.</p>
<p>Healthcare is bouncing after narrowly missing its key support zone and may climb back into the upper end of its recent range. </p>
<p>Consumer Staples, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Consumer Staples Sector Index (S5CONS Index), are holding their trading band, and if they can clear resistance around 870, it could mark a shift in trend. </p>
<p>Utilities, meanwhile, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Utilities Sector Index (S5UTIL Index), are attempting to bounce from the 360-370 zone. A push past 391 could open the door to more upside.</p>
<p>For investors looking to lean into the defensive rebound, sector ETFs offer a straightforward way to gain exposure. The <strong>Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) tracks major healthcare names and shows signs of stabilization. The <strong>Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) captures companies with steady demand, from food producers to household goods giants, and could benefit from renewed risk-off sentiment.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) offers exposure to power and water utilities that typically hold up well during economic slowdowns. These ETFs trading near key support zones may offer a lower-risk entry point as markets search for firmer footing.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500 Still Has Work To Do</h2>
<p>The overall market, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Index, is bouncing from its 4500-4800 long-term support zone, but Hunter warns that the rally could stall near 5396 or 5450. From there, another retest of support looks likely before a more durable bottom can take shape.</p>
<p>The market remains in a recession-driven bear, with more downside risk across most sectors. But while the high-flyers and cyclical names may struggle, the defensives are quietly preparing to step into the spotlight. Sometimes, playing it safe is the boldest move of all.</p>

These Defensives Could Rebound Despite Recession-Driven Bear Market: Analyst

<p>U.S. stocks staged a broad-based rally on Monday, snapping a volatile losing streak after President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> hinted at a more diplomatic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">approach to tariff negotiations.</a></p>
<p>In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the U.S. is handling a "massive amount of requests for negotiations," referencing active talks with South Korea and hinting that China "wants to make a deal, badly."</p>
<p>He also mentioned a joint venture involving an Alaska pipeline and military cost-sharing, asserting that South Korea&#8217;s top negotiation team was en route to the U.S.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Fed speakers begin to highlight the negative economic impact from tariffs. &#8220;We can&#8217;t really wait to the end of the quarter plus one month before we find out that investment really dropped off and GDP growth is shrinking,&#8221; Chicago Fed President <strong>Austan Goolsbee</strong> said.</p>
<p>By midday trading in New York, all major U.S. stock indices were firmly in the green. The S&amp;P 500 rose 1.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.1%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led with a 1.8% jump. Technology stocks were the day's clear outperformers, driven by a strong rebound in the semiconductor sector.</p>
<p>The<strong> iShares Semiconductor ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) surged 3.3%, marking its strongest intraday gain since September 2024. <strong>Broadcom Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) led the charge with a 7.3% jump, followed by <strong>Marvell Technology Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>) and <strong>Palantir Technologies Inc</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), which both climbed 6.1%.</p>
<p>In commodities, gold prices rose 0.5% to $2,335 per ounce, poised to snap a three-session losing streak. Oil prices also saw a firm recovery, with WTI crude advancing 1.5% to $61.50 per barrel, reversing recent weakness. U.S. Treasury yields remained largely flat. </p>
<p>In contrast, cryptocurrency markets failed to participate in the rally. <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell another 1% to $78,000. </p>
