Utilities

In seeking to track the performance of the index, the fund employs a replication strategy. It generally invests substantially all, but at least 95%, of its total assets in the securities comprising the index. The index includes securities of companies from the following industries: electric utilities; water utilities; multi-utilities; independent power and renewable electricity producers; and gas utilities. The fund is non-diversified.

Leading And Lagging Sectors For July 10, 2025

<p>Wall Street rose on Wednesday as investors shrugged off fresh trade uncertainty after the White House delayed the start of new tariffs to Aug. 1, raising hopes for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">new rounds of negotiations.</a></p>
<p>This came just a day after President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> floated sweeping tariffs, including a 50% tariff on copper and a potential 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals, though the latter may include a grace period.</p>
<p>The Russell 2000 led the charge, rising 0.7% to 2,244, as small-cap stocks continued to rebound. </p>
<p>The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.5%, climbing to 22,815, supported by strength in megacap tech names. <strong>Nvidia Corp. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) grabbed headlines once again, with its market capitalization hitting $4 trillion, solidifying its lead as the world's most valuable company. According to the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/e496f80f-1789-46b3-9275-a3f54344047e">Financial Times</a>, Nvidia is planning to launch a new AI chip designed specifically for China as soon as September. </p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 added 0.4%, trading at 6,250, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average inched 0.3% higher. </p>
<p>Sector performance was mixed, with utilities outperforming while consumer staples lagged.</p>
<p>In the bond market, Treasury yields fell 5 basis points ahead of a key 10-year auction later in the day. The U.S. dollar index held steady, ahead of the Federal Reserve's minutes from the June FOMC meeting, released on Wednesday afternoon.</p>
<p>Oil prices climbed for a third consecutive session, rising to $69 per barrel, while gold held flat at $3,325. In crypto, <strong>Bitcoin </strong>(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) advanced 0.9% to $109,235, trading just 2.5% below its all-time highs set in May.</p>

<p>U.S. stocks were little changed on Tuesday as investors stayed cautious following a series of letters from the White House to major trading partners, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">outlining sweeping new tariffs. </a></p>
<p>The real market action unfolded in commodities, with <strong>copper</strong> surging 10% after President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> announced a 50% tariff on copper imports starting today.</p>
<p>The industrial metal jumped to $5.52 per pound, hitting a new all-time high and marking its biggest one-day gain since October 2008.</p>
<p>During a Cabinet meeting, Trump stated: "Some letters are at a 60%, 70% rate.&#8221; He said to be announcing new tariff measures on pharmaceuticals — possibly a 200% tariff.</p>
<p>He added that trade relations with China have been "very fair" recently, noting a strong working relationship.</p>
<p>While Trump reiterated openness to trade negotiations, he emphasized that the U.S. will not extend the August deadline for reciprocal tariffs to take effect.</p>
<p>Commenting on the European Union, Trump said: "The EU has been speaking to us. President von der Leyen has been very nice lately, but they've treated us badly until recently. We're probably two days away from sending the EU letter. A letter is a deal."</p>
<p>At 1:40 p.m. ET, the <strong>S&amp;P 500 </strong>was flat at 6,220, the <strong>Nasdaq 100</strong> gained 0.1% to 22,710, while small caps led the way with the <strong>Russell 2000</strong> rising 0.9%.</p>
<p><strong>Energy stocks </strong>outperformed as oil prices climbed 1.4% for a second straight session, topping $68 — a two-week high.</p>
<p><strong>Treasury yields</strong> also moved higher, with the 10-year rising five basis points to 4.43% and the 30-year yield climbing to 4.96%.</p>

<p>With only days remaining until President Donald Trump&#8217;s self-imposed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/46156587/trump-says-july-tariff-deadline-not-set-in-stone-we-can-do-whatever-we-want">July 9 tariff deadline</a>, the world trade scene resembles more of a geopolitical roulette table than a negotiation process. Although Trump&#8217;s return to tariff diplomacy has reignited diplomatic turmoil and corporate jitters, ETF investors seem to be playing it cool, at least for now.</p>
<p>In typical Trumpian style, the U.S. President has threatened broad new tariffs for dozens of nations that don&#8217;t come to framework deals within a week. But the frameworks unveiled so far, such as with the UK and China, have been short on substance and long on optics, <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-deals-poised-fall-short-200000167.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9maW5hbmNlLnlhaG9vLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEULTOijSzPIUaM76ZtXMwuZstTO6Gs_v7AfYKLFpUVM4Steqh_vRi2Rov9Y-iYtoQCOXC3Y-OqA4Jw69CatX_-Dm8eeHYOkjbQGpOtqF7n8HfztsM-BX-_bexkQJ4DrwPmsmyKLDRwBseGfLZCVVRY921fP07UjhmhAjeZfj14t">according</a> to Bloomberg. And while volatility typically follows trade tensions, the markets are responding with an unusual resilience. So are ETF performances.</p>
<p>As it happens, investors might be putting their money on the &#8220;TACO&#8221; theory, short for &#8220;Trump Always Chickens Out,&#8221; a sarcastic acronym that has gained traction on trading desks to characterize his style of issuing bold threats and then backing down.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Global Trade In The Crosshairs&#8230;Again</h2>
<p>The stakes are high. From Canada and the EU to Taiwan and India, a broad swath of nations is at risk of getting their tariffs increased unless they negotiate deals or are considered to be &#8220;negotiating in good faith.&#8221; Trump has warned that tariffs could climb from the 10% baseline to as much as 25%. He has even suggested he might act before the July 9 deadline.</p>
<p>The White House has been sending mixed signals. Commerce Secretary <strong>Howard Lutnick</strong> claimed the administration is aiming for "top 10 deals" with key partners. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary <strong>Scott Bessent </strong>stated that nearly 20 countries may face immediate tariff hikes. Canada, for its part, has already blinked—backing off a digital services tax to get back to the table.</p>
<p>However, even as Trump ignites the trade universe with 280-character warnings, the ETF universe has remained relatively calm.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ETF Investors: Not Panicked, But Cautious</h2>
<p>Here&#8217;s what the ETF market action indicates:</p>
<p>Nation-specific ETFs that are correlated to stalled negotiations like <strong>iShares MSCI India ETF </strong>(BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INDA#BATS">INDA</a>), <strong>iShares MSCI Taiwan ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWT#NYSE">EWT</a>) and <strong>Global X FTSE Southeast Asia ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASEA#NYSE">ASEA</a>) have experienced a combination of speculative investments and defensive holding based on Trump&#8217;s rhetoric. Nonetheless, all three prices are in the green so far this year.</p>
<p>China&#8217;s exposure is still delicate. KraneShares CSI China <strong>Internet ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KWEB#NYSE">KWEB</a>) is up more than 3% in June, but has been volatile amid speculation about whether tariffs on rare earths and digital products will be reinstated.</p>
<p>Safe havens and commodities are in style again. <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><strong>SPDR Gold Shares</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) has recorded some of its most significant monthly advances since February, indicating investors are hedging against policy misfires.</span></p>
<p>If Trump follows through on blanket tariff increases, the shakeout would be rapid.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Potential ETF Winners</h2>
<p>Domestic-centric ETFs, such as <strong>iShares Russell 2000 ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) and <strong>Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>), may benefit from a rotation away from export-oriented companies.</p>
<p>Gold and bond ETFs, such as GLD, may experience inflows as investors scramble for safety following a policy shock.</p>
<p>India and Southeast Asia ETFs, such as INDA and ASEA, could become popular if the U.S. solidifies its relationships with these countries as part of its &#8220;friendshoring&#8221; initiative.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Likely Losers</h2>
<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Export-oriented ETFs, such as the<strong> Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NYSE">XLI</a>) and the<strong> Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>),</span> are heavily dependent on cross-border supply chains.</p>

<p>Equity markets have not yet fully priced in the possibility of Armageddon. <p>For the time being, the smart money is wagering on still more &#8220;deal theater,&#8221; tastefully staged for maximum political impact. But as always with Trump, a single tweet could upend everything.</p>

<p>Federal Reserve Governor <strong>Christopher Waller</strong> may have just handed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">ETF investors </a>a mid-summer plot twist. </p>
<p>In a Friday interview with CNBC, Waller said the U.S. central bank could start cutting interest rates as early as July, a stark pivot after six straight months of holding the line.</p>
<p>The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is set to meet on July 29–30, and while a rate cut is far from guaranteed, Waller's comments have given markets, and particularly rate-sensitive ETFs, fresh fuel for speculation.</p>
<p>"We could do this as early as July," said Waller, who noted that inflation and GDP are now hovering near the Fed's long-run targets. He also estimated that the current benchmark rate is about 1.25 to 1.5 percentage points above the "neutral" level.</p>
<p>That's Fed-speak for: we might have over-tightened, and it could be time to ease up.</p>

<p>President Donald Trump, who remains a vocal critic of the Fed, has been hammering the central bank to cut rates, suggesting it would help reduce ballooning interest costs on the government's debt. The Treasury has already shelled out $776 billion in interest payments over the past eight months, more than what the U.S. spent on defense.</p>
<p>But Waller didn't mince words: the Fed doesn't exist to make the government&#8217;s debt cheaper.</p>
<p>"Our mandate from Congress tells us to worry about unemployment and price stability," Waller said. "It does not tell us to provide cheap financing to the US government."</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bottom Line</h2>
<p>Waller's comments suggest that the Fed is growing increasingly comfortable with the idea of normalizing rates, or at least dipping a toe into the water. For ETF investors, that opens the door to rebalancing toward sectors poised to benefit from falling rates, even as the inflation story continues to lurk in the background.</p>
