Utilities

In seeking to track the performance of the index, the fund employs a replication strategy. It generally invests substantially all, but at least 95%, of its total assets in the securities comprising the index. The index includes securities of companies from the following industries: electric utilities; water utilities; multi-utilities; independent power and renewable electricity producers; and gas utilities. The fund is non-diversified.

<p>Recession probability forecasts aren't just creeping up — they're sprinting. In the span of days, JPMorgan hiked its odds of a U.S. recession from 40% to 60%, while S&amp;P Global jumped from 25% to 35%. Goldman Sachs and HSBC weren't far behind, now both penciling in a 35%–40% chance.</p>

<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong>'s fireworks this week may have lit up Wall Street, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/jeremy-siegel">but <strong>Jeremy Siegel</strong></a> isn't buying into the revelry just yet.</p>
<h1 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pause Doesn&#8217;t Equal Peace: Trump's Tariff Timeout Isn't The Endgame</strong></h1>
<p>Despite a 9.5% one-day rally that put the index in rarefied post-World War II territory, Siegel <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/10/jeremy-siegel-says-stocks-are-not-out-of-the-woods-yet-due-to-difficult-china-negotiations-ahead.html">told</a> CNBC's Squawk Box that investors celebrating a tariff truce may be getting ahead of themselves. "We're not out of the woods," the WisdomTree chief economist warned, pointing to the looming uncertainty in U.S.-China trade negotiations.</p>
<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong>'s 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs sparked the market&#8217;s surge, but with the 10% tariff now permanent and China countering with 84% on U.S. goods, this is hardly a peace treaty. </p>
<p>According to Siegel, investor sentiment remains shaky, still reeling from the initial tariff shock. That means the S&amp;P 500, down 11% from its highs and still negative for April, may struggle to reclaim its February peak anytime soon.</p>

<p>For investors riding the broader index rebound, ETFs like the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), <strong>iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) and <strong>Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) have all surged — but Siegel suggests caution.</p>

<p>Wall Street saw a tentative tech rebound early Wednesday, as investors begin to shrug off escalating U.S.-China trade tensions following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">a steep market selloff.</a></p>
<p>After the Trump administration announced a dramatic hike in tariffs on Chinese goods to 104% starting Wednesday, Beijing retaliated with an 84% tariff on American products. U.S. Treasury Secretary<strong> Scott Bessent</strong> defended the aggressive trade stance, claiming the impact would ultimately backfire on China.</p>
<p>President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> took to Truth Social, writing, &#8220;BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!&#8221; </p>
<p>He encouraged investors by stating, &#8220;this is a great time to buy, DJT,&#8221; likely referring to <strong>Trump Media &amp; Technology Group Corp.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>), rather than the Dow Jones Transportation Index, which has dropped 18% since the tariff news broke.</p>
<p>Yet, broader risk sentiment remains subdued, with investors awaiting either a softer tone from the White House or a signal from the Federal Reserve—though both hopes appear to be fading.</p>
<p>By mid-morning in New York, tech stocks staged a rebound, lifting the Nasdaq 100 by 0.9%. Yet, the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remained flat, while the Russell 2000 continued to underperform.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, U.S. Treasuries were failing to provide their traditional safe-haven support amid heightened uncertainty and volatility.</p>
<p>The 10-year Treasury yield surged 10 basis points to 4.40%, triggering a sharp selloff in medium- and long-dated bonds. The popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 1.8%, extending its three-day slide to 6.6%—its worst performance since March 2020.</p>
<p>Gold prices, on the other hand, soared over 3% to $3,075 per ounce, on track for their strongest daily gain since October 2023.</p>
<p><strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also advanced, rising 1.4% to $77,289.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">Most sectors are stumbling</a>, but the more defensive corners of the <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> are quietly setting up for a comeback.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s according to JPMorgan's Jason Hunter, who breaks the market into three camps: </p>
<ul>
<li>Former leaders (Tech, Consumer Discretionary, Financials)</li>
<li>Cyclical sectors (Industrials, Materials, Energy), and </li>
<li>Defensives (Healthcare, Staples, Utilities). </li>
</ul>
<p>The first two groups have cracked below key levels. Hunter predicts that even after recent bounces, they're likely to fade again before any real recovery takes hold. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reflex Bounces Or Just False Hope?</h2>
<p>Tech and Discretionary stocks saw sharp rebounds. But don't get too excited. In his latest technical chartbook, Hunter expects resistance near prior breakdown levels to stop these rallies in their tracks.</p>
<p>Tech, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Information Technology Sector Index (S5INFT Index), shows a ceiling between 3905 and 4240.</p>
<p>Discretionary? The S&amp;P 500 Consumer Discretionary Sector Index (S5COND Index) will likely fizzle between 1525 and 1660 before heading back toward support.</p>
<p>Financials aren't faring any better. The S&amp;P 500 Financials Sector Index (S5FINL Index) broke down from a classic top formation, and although it bounced, Hunter sees resistance near 767-791 acting as a lid before another leg down.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cyclicals Look Exhausted</h2>
<p>Industrials, Materials, and Energy all saw sharp pullbacks, many of which hit key support zones. Industrials, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Industrial Sector Index (S5INDU Index), are bouncing from the 960-990 zone but face resistance just above 1050. </p>
<p>Materials may be priced in a global manufacturing slump, with further downsides possibly occurring if economic data worsens. And Energy remains stuck between breakdown levels and deeper long-term support near 500-533 for the S&amp;P 500 Energy Sector Index (S5ENRS Index).</p>
<p>The takeaway? These economically sensitive sectors look bruised, and any bounce could be short-lived.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Defensives: The Quiet Comeback Kids</h2>
<p>Where's the relative strength? It's in the so-called boring stuff.</p>
<p>Defensive sectors don't show the same distribution—or investor exit—patterns that plague other groups, says Hunter. That gives them a cleaner technical setup.</p>
<p>Healthcare is bouncing after narrowly missing its key support zone and may climb back into the upper end of its recent range. </p>
<p>Consumer Staples, as tracked by the S&amp;P 500 Consumer Staples Sector Index (S5CONS Index), are holding their trading band, and if they can clear resistance around 870, it could mark a shift in trend. </p>
<p>Utilities, meanwhile, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Utilities Sector Index (S5UTIL Index), are attempting to bounce from the 360-370 zone. A push past 391 could open the door to more upside.</p>
<p>For investors looking to lean into the defensive rebound, sector ETFs offer a straightforward way to gain exposure. The <strong>Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) tracks major healthcare names and shows signs of stabilization. The <strong>Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) captures companies with steady demand, from food producers to household goods giants, and could benefit from renewed risk-off sentiment.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) offers exposure to power and water utilities that typically hold up well during economic slowdowns. <p>The overall market, as represented by the S&amp;P 500 Index, is bouncing from its 4500-4800 long-term support zone, but Hunter warns that the rally could stall near 5396 or 5450. From there, another retest of support looks likely before a more durable bottom can take shape.</p>
<p>The market remains in a recession-driven bear, with more downside risk across most sectors. But while the high-flyers and cyclical names may struggle, the defensives are quietly preparing to step into the spotlight. Sometimes, playing it safe is the boldest move of all.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Sparks Optimism With Trade Talk Blitz</h3>
<p>The catalyst behind the rally was a lengthy post on Truth Social by Trump, in which he described a "great call" with South Korea's acting president. </p>
<p>The president said South Korea is sending a "top team" to the U.S. for negotiations, calling the process &#8220;one-stop shopping&#8221; for trade and military agreements.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/08/asia/south-korea-acting-president-han-interview-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> interview, South Korea&#8217;s acting president confirmed the country would not align with China and Japan to counter U.S. tariffs. </p>
<p>Seoul faces 25% tariffs under Trump's global tariff rollout. Instead, it aims to strike a bilateral agreement with the U.S. to avoid a blow to its export-driven economy.</p>
<p>Trump also hinted at more openness in trade negotiations with China after threatening Monday to impose a 50% tariff on top of the 54% already levied.</p>
<p>&#8220;China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don&#8217;t know how to get it started,&#8221; Trump wrote.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are waiting for their [China's] call. It will happen!&#8221; he added, suggesting renewed momentum on U.S.-China trade talks.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For April 7, 2025

<p>Dip-buying remained absent in early Friday trading in New York, with Wall Street deep in the red as global trade war fears continued to escalate, despite the March jobs report showed continued signs of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645518/strong-jobs-report-offers-hope-but-will-it-be-enough-to-counter-tariff-turmoil">U.S. labor market resilience. </a></p>
<p>The U.S. economy added 228,000 jobs in March—the strongest gain since December 2024—sharply beating expectations of 135,000, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.</p>
<p>Still, the report did little to calm nerves. Investors fear it may be the last strong print for a while, with the economic impact of rising tariffs expected to seep into the data in the coming months.</p>
<p>The unemployment rate ticked up just 0.1 percentage points to 4.2%, remaining low by historical standards, while wage growth broadly aligned with forecasts. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month and 3.8% year-over-year.</p>
<p>Wall Street remained deep in the red after China announced a retaliatory 34% tariff on U.S. goods—matching the rate imposed by President <strong>Donald Trump</strong> on Wednesday—intensifying fears of a full-blown trade war.</p>
<p>Trump took to Truth Social on Friday. "Great job numbers, far better than expected. It's already working. Hang tough, we can't lose!"</p>
<p>He added. "China played it wrong, they panicked," and reassured investors: "This is a great time to get rich—richer than ever before!"</p>
<p>Investors are now on edge, awaiting remarks from Fed Chair<strong> Jerome Powell</strong> at 11:25 a.m. ET on Friday, hoping for any hint of a dovish shift in policy tone.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street In Bloodbath: Could Powell Halt The Bleeding? </h3>
<p>Here's how the key benchmarks moved at the open:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>S&amp;P 500</strong>, tracked by the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), was down 2.9% by 9:55 a.m. in New York.</li>
<li><strong>Dow Jones Industrial Average</strong>, tracked by the <strong>SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), fell 2.6%, officially entering correction territory after falling more than 10% from its late-2024 peak.</li>
<li><strong>Nasdaq-100</strong>, tracked by the <strong>Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), fell 2.9%, hitting a 20% decline from all-time highs, entering a bear market. </li>
<li><strong>Russell 2000</strong>, represented by the <strong>iShares Russell 2000 ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), fell 4.1%. </li>

<p>Every sector traded in the red, with heaviest losses concentrated in <strong>Energy</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), down 5%, and <strong>Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>), down 4%. </p>
<p>While stocks continued to slump, bonds attracted haven flows. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes fell by 10 basis points to 3.94%. The popular <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 1.5%. </p>

<p>Wall Street just got a wake-up call. According to JPMorgan analyst <strong>Maia G. Crook</strong>, the probability of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/recession">a U.S. recession</a> has surged to 60%, up from 40% last month, thanks to the latest round of tariff hikes.</p>
<p>The "largest U.S. tax hike in nearly 60 years" is expected to hit household and business spending, drag down sentiment and disrupt global supply chains.</p>

<p>The tariff war escalated with a fresh 22% hike, pushing fears of retaliation and economic slowdowns to new highs. Crook warns of ripple effects, noting that the uncertainty around trade policies could further dampen business confidence. </p>
<p>While there's still a 40% chance of avoiding a recession, she cautions that it hinges on "negotiations&#8221; that &#8220;will bring these announced rates down in the coming weeks."</p>
