<p>The December jobs report jolted financial markets during early Friday trading. Stronger-than-expected employment growth and a drop in the unemployment rate to 4.1% raised fears the Federal Reserve may hold off on cutting interest rates <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">for most of 2025.</a></p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">December Jobs Report Fuels Fed Hawkishness: Dollar Soars, Yields Jump </h3>
<p>The U.S. economy added 256,000 new jobs last month, marking an acceleration from the downwardly revised 212,000 jobs added in November and sharply outpacing economist forecasts of 160,000, as tracked by TradingEconomics.</p>
<p>The December reading represented the strongest monthly job growth since March 2024, underscoring the continued resilience of the U.S. economy despite high interest rates and resurgent inflationary pressures.</p>
<p>The unemployment rate ticked down from 4.2%to 4.1% in November, defying expectations of no change. Wages rose broadly in line with expectations, with average hourly earnings increasing 0.3% month-over-month, slowing slightly from November&#8217;s 0.4%. On a year-over-year basis, wages climbed 3.9%, marginally below the 4% forecast.</p>
<p>Fed fund futures showed a steep decline in the probability of a March rate cut, with implied odds dropping to just 26%, down from 43% a day earlier, according to <strong>CME</strong>&#8216;s FedWatch tool.</p>
<p>Treasury yields rose sharply across the curve, reflecting a repricing of interest rate expectations. </p>
<p>The two-year yield, closely tied to Federal Reserve policy expectations, jumped 11 basis points to 4.37%. The 10-year yield surged 10 basis points to 4.79%, its highest level since November 2023.</p>
<p>Notably, the most striking move came in the 30-year yield, which breached the 5% mark for the first time since October 2023. Before that, the last time 30-year yields surpassed this milestone was in August 2007.<strong> The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 1.2% in premarket trading, highlighting the market's sensitivity to long-term rates.</p>
<p>The U.S. Dollar Index, tracked by the <strong>Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), surged 0.5% to 109.70, a level last seen in late October 2022. </p>
<p>The greenback climbed 0.4% against the Japanese yen and 0.6% versus the euro, pushing the euro-dollar pair to a fresh 27-month low of 1.0250. The Sterling wasn&#8217;t spared, falling 0.7% to a 15-month low against the dollar.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stocks Slump Across The Board</h3>
<p>Futures on major U.S. indices were down 1% across the board, as the prospect of higher-for-longer interest rates rattled investors. All S&amp;P 500 sectors, except energy, traded in the negative premarket Friday.</p>
<p>Real estate, tracked by the <strong>Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLRE#NYSE">XLRE</a>), and technology, represented by the <strong>Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), both sank 1.4%. </p>
<p>Rate-sensitive sectors such as real estate and growth-heavy tech bore the brunt of the selloff as higher yields weighed on long-duration assets.</p>
<p>The one standout sector was energy, with the <strong>Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) climbing 1.3%.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Major Premarket Movers</h3>
<p>Among energy giants, <strong>Chevron Corp. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) gained 1.67% to $152.81, <strong>Exxon Mobil Corp.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) rose 1.57% to $108.61 and <strong>ConocoPhillips </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COP#NYSE">COP</a>) advanced 1.43% to $103.07, benefiting from a 3% spike in oil prices after Reuters reported thet U.S. is mulling stronger sanctions on Russia&#8217;s oil sector.</p>
<p>In contrast, rate-sensitive mega-cap tech stocks dragged the market lower. </p>
<p><strong>Nvidia Corp. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) fell 2.51% to $136.59, <strong>Advanced Micro Devices Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) dropped 2.92% to $118.28 and <strong>American International Group Inc. </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AIG#NYSE">AIG</a><strong>)</strong> plunged 3.93% to $68.63, leading losses among financials.</p>

<p>Wall Street began Wednesday with muted trading, as investors braced for the release of the December Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes. During that meeting, policymakers delivered their third consecutive interest rate cut but struck a hawkish tone on inflation and the monetary<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42563299/feds-powell-shocks-markets-its-a-new-phase-were-significantly-closer-to-neutral"> policy outlook for 2025.</a></p>
<p>By midday in New York, major indices were little moved, with sectors showing tight variations. Traders appear to be holding their breath as they await insight into the Fed's future policy direction.</p>
<p>President-elect <strong>Donald Trump</strong> emerged in the spotlight as CNN reported his team is considering an &#8220;economic emergency plan&#8221; that would bypass Congress to expedite the use of broad-based tariffs.</p>
<p>The dollar, meanwhile, surged further, continuing its relentless rally. The greenback is now targeting its sixth consecutive week of gains, having risen in 14 out of the last 15 weeks. U.S. Treasury yields ticked higher early in the session before easing slightly as traders adjusted positions ahead of the FOMC minutes.</p>
<p>On the economic front, the latest ADP private employment data showed weaker-than-expected job creation in December, potentially signaling a cooling labor market heading into the new year.</p>
<p>In commodities, gold rose 0.8%, buoyed by increasing geopolitical and trade uncertainties. On Tuesday, Trump floated a series of controversial proposals, including <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/01/42860583/trump-floats-canada-as-51st-us-state-says-hes-ready-to-use-economic-force-to-achieve-it">the annexation of Canada</a>, the purchase of Greenland from Denmark, threats to NATO allies to increase defense spending and imposing higher tariffs on Mexico.</p>
<p>The cryptocurrency market extended its decline, with <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) falling more than 2% to trade below $95,000. Over the past two sessions, the leading cryptocurrency has shed over 7% of its value, erasing most of its year-to-date gains.</p>

Wall Street Mixed Ahead Of Fed Minutes, Dollar Bolsters Strength, Bitcoin Falls Below $95,000: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

<p>Tuesday began as a calm day on Wall Street, but markets swiftly turned negative after the Institute for Supply Management released data highlighting an unexpected surge in price pressures within the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/01/42850914/us-services-sector-growth-tops-forecasts-but-price-pressures-tariff-concerns-cloud-outlook">service sector for December.</a> </p>
<p>The report reignited fears over persistent inflation and mounting concerns over the economic fallout from tariffs.</p>
<p>The ISM&#8217;s Services PMI rose to 54.1% in December, surpassing expectations and marking the third-highest reading of 2024. This figure signals continued expansion in the services industry. </p>
<p>Yet the Prices Index, which reflects input costs for service providers, jumped sharply to 64.4%, up from 58.2% in November, significantly outpacing consensus estimates of 57.5%. This was the highest print since February 2023 and a clear sign that inflationary pressures are not easing as anticipated.</p>
<p>By midday, all major stock indices were trading lower. The Nasdaq 100 was hit particularly hard as rising Treasury yields soured risk sentiment, putting pressure on growth-oriented technology stocks. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond surged by 6 basis points to 4.91%, its highest level since November 2023, reflecting growing unease in the bond market. </p>
<p>The sell-off extended to bond ETFs, with the <strong>iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) falling by 1% on the day.</p>
<p>Amid this broader market weakness, only a handful of sectors managed to resist the selling pressure. Energy, materials and financials emerged as the outperformers.</p>
<p>In the commodities market, oil prices rebounded after earlier losses this week. West Texas Intermediate light crude climbed 1% to settle at $73.70 per barrel, recovering from Monday&#8217;s decline, while natural gas prices plunged 5%.</p>
<p>Precious metals saw modest gains, with gold up 0.6% and copper rising 1.1%, reflecting a cautious shift toward safer assets.</p>
<p>The rally in cryptocurrencies came to a sudden halt. <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) dropped 5% to $97,000, poised to snap a six-session winning streak.</p>

<p>Wall Street began the new year with modest gains, as major U.S. indices edged higher by midday trading in New York, aiming to recover from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the prior session&#8217;s selloff.</a></p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 advanced 0.5%, while the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 rose 0.6%. Small-cap stocks led the charge, with the Russell 2000 climbing nearly 1%.</p>
<p>Energy-related stocks outperformed, buoyed by a surge in oil and natural gas prices. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil soared 2.4% to surpass $73 per barrel, marking its fourth consecutive session of gains. The rally followed Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showing a sixth straight weekly decline in U.S. commercial crude inventories.</p>
<p>Natural gas prices also gained over 2%, driven by heightened heating demand as arctic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/01/42769181/natural-gas-prices-surge-as-arctic-blast-freezes-us-3-stocks-on-the-move">air swept across the U.S.</a></p>
<p>The broader commodities market was upbeat as well. Gold climbed 1.7%, and silver surged 2.4%. Longer-dated U.S. Treasury yields stayed high, with the 30-year Treasury note inching up 2 basis points to 4.80%.</p>

<p>Wall Street turned volatile Friday as four days of gains give way to fresh selling pressure driven by investor uncertainty over the incoming Trump administration&#8217;s economic policies and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">Federal Reserve&#8217;s path forward.</a></p>
<p>Major indices experienced wide losses by midday trading in New York, nearly erasing prior gains seen earlier this week, clouding the outlook for a Santa Rally.</p>
<p>The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 2%, on track for its second-worst session this month. Both the S&amp;P 500 and the Dow saw notable losses, while small caps underperformed large-cap counterparts.</p>
<p>On the data front, the U.S. goods trade deficit widened to $102.86 billion in November 2024, surpassing expectations of $100.7 billion, as imports jumped 4.5%, according to an advance official estimate.</p>
<p>Treasury yields were little moved but remained elevated, with the long-dated 30-year yield hovering at the highest levels since May. </p>
<p>In commodities markets, oil emerged by rising 1%, with West Texas Intermediate light crude topping $70 per barrel amid recent declines in in commercial crude inventories.</p>
<p>In cryptocurrency markets <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) dropped 1.7% to $94,000, heading for its second consecutive weekly loss— the first since September.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For December 26, 2024

<p>The year of milestones, 2024, has seen an unperturbed rise in the current bull market, which is nearly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42430296/carson-researchs-50-year-study-suggests-that-the-26-months-old-bull-market-is-far-from-over">26 months</a> old. It is higher by more than 70% from the mid-October 2022 lows. As we wrap up the year with the possibility of a &#8216;Santa Rally,&#8217; let&#8217;s recap 2024&#8217;s landmark junctures.</p>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Major U.S. Benchmarks Scale Fresh Records</strong></h3>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 Index has made 57 new all-time highs this year, hitting the last one on Dec. 6, 2024. Also, &#8220;2024 would go down as the best election year return ever,&#8221; said <strong>Ryan Detrick</strong>, the chief market strategist at Carson Research in a note.</p>
<p>&#8220;Going back 50 years, we found five other bull markets that had lasted at least this long and the shortest any of them lasted was five total years. Think of it like a cruise ship — once it gets moving, it can be quite hard to stop,&#8221; added Detrick</p>
<p>While the S&amp;P 500 index was up 25.96% on a year-to-date basis as of Dec. 23 close, the <strong>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) rose by 25.82% in the same period.</p>
<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average index, on the other hand, hit a record eight 1,000-point milestones this year. It started the year around the 37,000 level and breached the 45,000 level at the beginning of December. It took only seven trading days for the index to go from 44,000 to 45,000, the second fastest 1,000-point milestone ever. Following that the index also saw one of its longest 10-day losing streak, the first ever since 1974.</p>
<p>Dow was up 13.77% year-to-date as of the Dec. 23 close, whereas the <strong>SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) gained 13.74% in the same period.</p>
<p>The Nasdaq 100 index which includes all the &#8216;magnificent seven&#8217; stocks, unlike Dow, rose 29.98% year-to-date as Dec. 23 close. The ETF tracking the index, <strong>Fidelity NASDAQ Composite Index ETF</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ONEQ#NASDAQ">ONEQ</a>) rose by 33.85% in the same period. Whereas, the <strong>Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) rose by 29.88% in 2024.</p>
<p>The smallcap index Russell 2000 was up 11.16% over the year, while <strong>iShares Russell 2000 ETF</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) was up 10.97% in the same period as of the Dec. 23 close.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">U.S. Market Trumps The World</h3>
<p>Among the developed economies, the S&amp;P 500 remains the best index with a 25.96% gain on a year-to-date basis, outperforming all the other developed market indices.</p>
<p>While the <a href="https://x.com/RyanDetrick/status/1871317802306707882">first </a>year of a new president&#8217;s term has usually been strong since 1897, the returns during year one of a second term haven&#8217;t been very good overall, said Detrick.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Communication, Consumer Discretionary, And Technology Lead Gains In 2024</h3>
<p>Tracking the exchange-traded funds that track the major sectors in the U.S. market, communication services emerged as the top sector for the year, followed by consumer discretionary and technology. The information technology sector has the highest weight of 31.3% in the S&amp;P 500, followed by financials a t13.9%.</p>
<p>BlackRock said that they see technology companies&#8217; earnings performing well in 2025. &#8220;We are overweight as the AI theme and earnings growth broaden. Valuations for AI beneficiaries are supported by tech companies delivering on earnings.&#8221;</p>

<p>Among the defensive sectors, utilities emerged as a winner, whereas energy was an underperformer. Consumer staples, energy, and utilities take up 5.7%, 3.4%, and 2.5% weight, respectively in the S&amp;P 500 index.</p>
<p>As per Morgan Stanley, the energy sector faces a divided future. Trump's deregulation could benefit traditional energy, but the outlook for oil is uncertain due to potential oversupply and weak global demand, especially from China. In contrast, natural gas may see growth from strong European demand and increased domestic use for electrification and AI-powered data centers. The clean energy sector could face challenges, if Trump rollbacks Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act tax credits. However, a full repeal seems unlikely due to the benefits for Republican states.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">U.S. Dollar Surges Over 6% In 2024</h3>
<p>The Dollar index was up 6.72% year-to-date with a 52-week range of 100.1570 to 108.5410 per unit. If the Greenback can hold on to these gains, the currency would leave behind the second-best year since 2015.</p>
<p>The UDS&#8217;s demand has been rising due to the &#8220;Uncertainties arising from expected Trump's policies and hawkish comments from the Fed towards rate cycle,&#8221; said <strong>Kunal Sodhani</strong>, vice president of the global trading center at Shinhan Bank.</p>
<p>According to Franklin Templeton, &#8220;The Fed easing cycle will be a dominant factor for the USD. The two main comparisons we draw against the Fed cyclically, interest-rate-wise, are emerging markets, and Japan.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>WisdomTree Bloomberg US Dollar Bullish Fund </strong>(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USDU#NYSE">USDU</a>) was up 13.24% on a year-to-date basis, as of Dec. 23 close, where as <strong>Invesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) advanced by 7.21% in the same period.</p>

Leading And Lagging Sectors For December 25, 2024

<p>Wall Street kicked off the Santa Rally season on a positive note, with all major indices and sectors closing higher in a shortened session ahead <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/12/42665923/is-stock-market-open-on-christmas-eve-2024-a-quick-guide-for-market-hours-banks-and-whats-closed-for-santa-claus">of the Christmas holiday.</a></p>
<p>The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1%, extending its gains for a third consecutive session following last week&#8217;s volatile Federal Reserve meeting.</p>
<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 gained 1.3%, nearly erasing last week&#8217;s losses.</p>
<p>Consumer discretionary stocks, the top-performing sector of the year, led the rally amid light trading volumes. <strong>Tesla Inc </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) surged 7.35%, marking its strongest single-day performance since November.</p>
<p>Other standout performers in the S&amp;P 500 included <strong>Walmart Inc.</strong> (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>), <strong>Starbucks Corp</strong>. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SBUX#NASDAQ">SBUX</a>), and <strong>Netflix Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>), up 2.4%, 2.8% and 2.5% respectively. </p>
<p>The U.S. dollar index posted modest gains, with the greenback hovering near over one-year highs against the euro. Treasury yields remained stable, with the 10-year benchmark at 4.6%, the highest level since May.</p>
<p>In commodities, gold edged up 0.4%, while oil prices rose 0.7%.</p>
<p>Risk appetite returned to the cryptocurrency market following recent volatility, as <strong>Bitcoin</strong> (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) jumped 4% to over $98,000. This rally buoyed crypto-related stocks, including <strong>Microstrategy Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>), <strong>MARA Digital Holdings Inc. </strong>(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>), and <strong>Coinbase Global Inc.</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>), all posting notable gains.</p>
