Leading And Lagging Sectors For November 13, 2024

Wall Street saw the first surge in risk aversion after Donald Trump's election victory last week, as concerns grew over potential tariffs and trade policy shifts spurred by the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/11/41902202/trumps-china-hawks-rumored-for-top-roles-yuan-hits-3-month-low"> incoming administration's key appointments.</a>
Trump is reportedly considering Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state and Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) for national security advisor. Both are vocal hawks on China and NATO, raising concerns of a tougher U.S. stance that could strain key geopolitical and trade relationships.
Adding to the cautious sentiment, investors are bracing for Wednesday's key inflation data release, with economists forecasting the annual rate to hit 2.6% in October.
As of midday trading in New York, none of the major U.S. equity indices posted gains, while small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 1.5%. Ten out of 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors traded in the red, with consumer staples the only marking tiny gains.
Chinese stocks suffered steep declines, with major U.S.-listed companies falling between 5% and 9% as worries over potential tariffs spooked investors.
The dollar, viewed as a hedge against tariff risk, strengthened, with a currency-weighted index reaching its highest level since May 2024. 
The Japanese yen slipped past 154.7 per dollar, fully erasing gains from the Bank of Japan's August intervention, while the Chinese yuan and the euro also weakened, with the euro falling below $1.06.
Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year Treasury yield up eight basis points to 4.42%, pushing the popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) down 1.2%.
The cryptocurrency market also faced pressure, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) down 1.6%. Gold dropped for a third straight day, weighed down by a stronger dollar and higher Treasury yields, as it struggled to attract safe-haven inflows.

Famed market analyst Tom Lee, managing partner of Fundstrat, summarized trade ideas on Monday following President-Elect <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41768178/donald-trump-defeats-kamala-harris-to-win-2024-election">Donald Trump&#8217;s victory</a>. Fellow analyst Ryan Detrick concurred with two of Lee&#8217;s ideas.
Tom Lee&#8217;s Picks: Lee <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIIzr4_3MvU&amp;ab_channel=CNBCTelevision">appeared</a> on CNBC Monday morning, touting cyclical and small-cap stocks.
Lee asserted that energy stocks may not do as well as expected under a second Trump term, but cyclical industrial and financial stocks may perform well.
&#8220;This is for [industrials and financials]&#8230; a great environment, including M&amp;A, cost of money falling and deregulation,&#8221; Lee said.
The analyst noted that markets have begun pricing in future inflation, perhaps due to Trump&#8217;s plan to deport undocumented immigrants or run up fiscal spending. Lee says markets are unsure of Trump&#8217;s plans on trade, but noted that markets may shape policy to be pro-business. 
Lee subsequently touted small-cap companies due to their historical underperformance and cheap valuations compared to the S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>). He also noted that small-cap earnings are faster than those of their larger counterparts. Additionally, roughly 44% of small-caps are cyclical (regional banks and industrial stocks).

Recent Price Action: The financial-focused Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has performed well in the green since Trump&#8217;s win, up nearly 7%. Regional banks have performed even better—the iShares US Regional Banks ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAT#NYSE">IAT</a>) is up over 11% in that timeframe.
Meanwhile, industrials have also performed well; the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NYSE">XLI</a>) is up over 5%.

The &#8220;Trump-related everything rally&#8221; reignited across markets on Monday, with heightened focus on last week's top performers like small caps, financials, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), and cryptocurrencies, all surging as the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https://www.benzinga.com/markets&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiQxOXV7NSJAxWUTKQEHQWeNCEQFnoECB8QAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw1FmExYgZnKyK1W0mkY7TrX">new trading week began.</a>
The Russell 2000 Index outperformed major large-cap indices, nearing a retest of its all-time high from November 2021.
Financials shone brightest again, with both large and regional banks posting strong gains. The SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) surged 3.9%, reaching levels last seen in August 2022.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also dominated headlines, surpassing the $85,000 milestone and fueling widespread gains across other crypto assets.
Major crypto-related stocks, including Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COIN#NASDAQ">COIN</a>), rallied nearly 22%, hitting highs last seen in late November 2021. MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>) soared 25%, with Riot Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIOT#NASDAQ">RIOT</a>) and CleanSpark Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CSLK#NASDAQ">CSLK</a>) both up by 21%.
Within tech, Tesla continued its rally, while the rest of the sector lagged, weighed down by sharp declines in semiconductors following new AI-related export restrictions to China, impacting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>).
Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar extended its gains, while Treasury yields held steady, with the 10-year yield hovering around 4.3%.
Prices tumbled in commodities, with the exception of natural gas, which rose roughly 10%. Gold dropped over 2%, and oil fell by 3%.

Regional banks, in particular, were on fire, with the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) skyrocketing nearly 11% and seeing $1.09 billion in inflows, marking its largest influx of money since March 2023.

The S&amp;P 500 index surged past the 6,000-point milestone, setting fresh record highs, and small-cap stocks are poised for their best weekly performance since April 2024 as investor optimism surrounding the &#8220;Trump trade&#8221; continued to fuel a strong risk-on sentiment by the end of a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">wild week in the market</a>. 
All major U.S. indices posted modest gains in midday trading, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average leading slightly, soaring beyond the 44,000-point mark. The blue-chip index is set for its best weekly performance in over a year.
Friday's rise in the S&amp;P 500 was powered by the utilities and real estate sectors, which had lagged post-election. Tech stocks took a breather following Thursday's rally.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) surged 7%, pushing its weekly gains beyond 27% and propelling its market cap past $1 trillion. 
This move now places every "Magnificent Seven" tech stock in the trillion-dollar club, with the group's combined market cap topping $17 trillion.
Treasury yields held steady, while the dollar strengthened in response to the Federal Reserve's Thursday 25-basis-point rate <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41823887/powell-dismisses-talk-of-resignation-after-trump-victory-says-policy-is-still-res">cut to 4.5%-4.75%</a>.

The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) has risen by 30% in 2024, outpacing the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), which is up 26% this year. 
Small and mid-sized banks, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>), have also seen strong performance, with a 13% jump following election results, bringing them in line with tech sector gains. 
Financial stocks, which have lagged behind technology for six of the past seven years, are now catching up, propelled by renewed optimism for deregulation and M&amp;A activities.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Analysts Expect M&amp;A Activity to Heat Up</h1>
With the Trump administration&#8217;s return to the White House, analysts are projecting a significant uptick in mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A) in the financial sector.
&#8220;Under the upcoming Trump II administration, we expect a more favorable backdrop for M&amp;A which could lead to additional activity in the space after having been quiet for the past few years,&#8221; said Anthony Elian, CFA, analyst at JPMorgan.
Lower regulatory barriers could pave the way for consolidation among smaller banks, while larger financial institutions are expected to benefit from a more active capital markets environment.

Devin Ryan, analyst at Citizens JMP Securities, highlighted that a Trump-led "sweep of Congress" could significantly ease regulatory pressures for the broader financial and fintech sectors.
&#8220;The &#8216;Trump Trade&#8217; had already been underway in the market in recent weeks, but the resounding presidential win, and perhaps more importantly, likely sweep of Congress, is adding fuel to the fire in stock moves,&#8221; Ryan explained.
For fintech firms, this shift could relieve recent regulatory scrutiny, particularly in areas such as connectivity with traditional banks and practices overseen by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Companies involved in digital assets stand to benefit even more, as regulatory clarity would open the door for new market entrants and increase industry participation.
"Digital assets could arguably be the biggest winner of them all," said Ryan, who sees sentiment in the space "improving materially from here." 
Ryan indicates the political climate has shifted to one more favorable for cryptocurrencies, as policymakers begin to recognize the economic and electoral weight of pro-crypto sentiment.

Regional bank stocks surged on Wednesday, marking their strongest one-day performance in four years as investors bet on a more favorable banking sector environment when Donald Trump returns <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">to the White House.</a>
The SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) — which tracks a basket of 147 small- and mid-cap U.S. banks — jumped 13.4%, posting its largest rally since November 2020. Back then, the announcement of the first COVID-19 vaccine sparked a broad market rebound.
In Wednesday's trading, regional banks outshined even the biggest U.S. banks. Financials were the top-performing sector in the S&amp;P 500, with the Financials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) rising 6%. 
Yet regional banks saw an even greater lift, driven by expectations that Trump&#8217;s policies will uniquely benefit smaller, domestic-focused institutions.
The strength in regional banks also fueled a broader rally in small-cap stocks. The Russell 2000 index, which includes a significant portion of regional banks, surged 6% as investor optimism spread across smaller, U.S.-centric companies.
Regional banks are the most representative sector of the Russell 2000 index, which soared by 6% on Wednesday.

JPMorgan analyst Anthony Elian sees multiple factors that could fuel a strong performance for regional banks under Trump&#8217;s leadership.
&#8220;We view these results as being favorable for the regional bank sector tied to several tailwinds,&#8221; Elian wrote in a note on Wednesday. 
He highlighted seven main drivers:

<li>Increased lending activity – A pro-business and onshoring agenda is expected to boost lending, potentially driving a revival in loan growth across the industry.</li>
<li>Lower corporate taxes – Trump&#8217;s anticipated tax cuts could enhance profitability for regional banks by reducing their tax burden.</li>
<li>Eased regulatory environment – According to Elian, &#8220;a second Trump administration would include an easier backdrop for regulation for the industry,&#8221; which could help banks reduce compliance costs and expand operations.</li>
<li>Uptick in M&amp;A activity – With a favorable regulatory climate, the sector could see an increase in mergers and acquisitions, a trend that was prevalent during Trump's first term and could benefit mid-sized banks seeking growth.</li>
<li>Attractive valuations – Elian noted that regional banks remain undervalued by historical standards, suggesting &#8220;there is still material upside on the table.&#8221;</li>
<li>Steep Treasury yield curve, Fed still in easing mode – With the Treasury yield curve in a steep pattern and the Federal Reserve to keep lowering rates, regional banks could benefit from improved net interest margins (NIMs) and net interest income (NII), boosting their earnings and profitability over time.</li>
<li>Underweight positioning – Elian highlighted that investors are still largely underweight on regional bank stocks, indicating room for increased demand as sentiment shifts.</li>

JPMorgan&#8217;s Elian identified a few standout names in the regional banking space. Among his top picks are First Citizens BancShares, Inc. Clean energy stocks were among the day's worst performers, with the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) plunging 11% for its steepest drop since March 2020, as investors braced for potential rollbacks on green initiatives under the Trump administration.
In the foreign exchange market, the U.S. dollar initially rallied nearly 2% before paring gains to 1.4% as traders awaited a Federal Reserve interest rate cut on Thursday.
Treasury yields spiked as expectations rose for larger budget deficits under Republican fiscal policies and higher inflation due to potential tariffs. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed 14 basis points to 4.41%, reaching a four-month high.
Gold prices fell 2.8%, silver dropped over 4%, while natural gas rose 3.8%. Oil prices remained steady.

Regarding the energy sector's poor performance, that wasn't solely a result of the COVID-19 pandemic-driven oil price collapse.
Despite Trump's pro-fossil-fuel policies, energy stocks faced persistent headwinds throughout his term, even before 2020, with the global shift toward renewables putting continuous pressure on traditional oil and gas investments. 
Surprisingly to many, solar stocks — tracked by the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) — were among the top-performing industries during Trump's first presidency, soaring by an impressive 267% between November 2016 and November 2020.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Financials Were Early Winners In Trump's First Term</h1>
In the first three months following Trump's 2016 election, financials stocks saw significant gains. 
The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) rose by 17.2% between Nov. 8, 2016, and Jan. 10, 2017, outpacing all other sectors. The rally was driven by anticipation of deregulation and tax cuts, which boosted investor confidence in banks and other financial stocks.
Conversely, consumer staples and utilities — traditionally defensive sectors — were the weakest performers in that initial period, with losses of 2.39% and 2.3%, respectively.

On November 6, 2024, the day after Trump's re-election was confirmed, market activity showed a familiar pattern with financials and industrials posting the strongest gains. 
Financials climbed by 5.6%, followed by energy and industrial, each more than 3.5%, suggesting renewed optimism for deregulation and potential infrastructure investment as investors previously had in the first three months following his election in 2016.

Trump's return to the White House could bring back some familiar market dynamics, but the economic and geopolitical landscape in 2024 is notably different from 2016. 
Investors should be prepared for a mix of potential tailwinds and headwinds that may shape sector performance in unique ways.
Trump's expected emphasis on tax cuts, deregulation and support for traditional energy sources could once again boost sectors like financials, industrials and consumer discretionary.
