The rally came on the heels of a series of pro-defense, pro-tech executive orders issued in June by President Donald Trump, designed to enhance domestic drone capabilities and counter foreign incursions in U.S. airspace. These policies are speedily reshaping the makeup and appeal of contemporary defense ETFs.

The Global X Defense Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHLD#NYSE">SHLD</a>), which aims for pure-play military tech and cybersecurity over old-school aerospace exposure, is heavily invested in Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) and international defense players BAE Systems (OTCPK: BAESF) and Rheinmetall (OTCPK: RNMBF).
Other ETFs, such as the SPDR S&amp;P Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XAR#NYSE">XAR</a>), also take a more diversified tack with equal-weight strategies that target giants such as Lockheed Martin (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>) and leaner disruptors such as Kratos, which also designs unmanned aerial systems.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ETF Rotation Amid Policy And Dispersion</h2>
CFRA Research&#8217;s Aniket Ullal observed in an event by Yahoo Finance last month that policy uncertainty during the Trump era is fueling all-time high market dispersion, and sector-specific ETFs such as iShares U.S. Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ITA#BATS">ITA</a>) and Select STOXX Europe Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EUAD#BATS">EUAD</a>) are becoming top beneficiaries of defense and trade-fueled tailwinds.
Defense and aerospace ETFs have been some of the strongest performers in 2025, said Ullal, adding that when dispersion is high, active ETF strategies and focused thematic exposure, particularly in sectors such as drones and military technology, will outperform.
Meanwhile, European defense exposure is warming up as NATO countries rush to keep up with U.S. defense spending. EUAD, the sole European defense ETF available in the U.S., is 77% higher this year so far on the back of heavy atop positioning in Airbus and Safran.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Stealth Tech Play For Growth Chasers</h2>
Defense ETFs were once seen as &#8220;safe&#8221; or defensive plays, offering stable returns via long-term government contracts. But in today's market, they&#8217;re increasingly about disruption, not just protection.

BlueForge Alliance and Palantir Technologies Inc. The program utilizes Palantir&#8217;s Warp Speed operating system, built on its Foundry platform, to connect stakeholders in real time, enhance supply chain visibility, and reduce bottlenecks across the defense manufacturing network. Coupled with BlueForge&#8217;s expertise in embedded manufacturing, the initiative aims to accelerate delivery and improve production readiness.

Palantir's Tech To Supercharge US Navy Shipbuilding

Sidus Space (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SIDU#NASDAQ">SIDU</a>) announced Monday it is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/b46169174/sidus-space-partners-with-vorago-technologies-to-advance-radiation-hardened-compute-capabilities-f" rel="noreferrer noopener">partnering with semiconductor firm</a> VORAGO Technologies in a strategic effort to develop and validate next-generation radiation-hardened microcontroller (MCU) technology through VORAGO&#8217;s Alpha Customer Program.
The collaboration grants Sidus early access to VORAGO&#8217;s next-generation MCU components, which are engineered for reliability in the demanding environments of space and defense. The companies aim to validate and refine the technology through system-level testing and integration ahead of a planned production rollout in 2026.
Sidus will work closely with VORAGO through shared design reviews and in-system evaluations, contributing real-world feedback to help shape the MCU&#8217;s final specifications. The program includes access to development tools and technical support, positioning both firms to speed up deployment timelines and enhance mission-critical performance capabilities.

Following a series of sobering near-miss incidents in U.S. airports, most recently when a Southwest Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>) plane came close to departing from a taxiway in Orlando, air carriers are focusing now on what could be the most priceless upgrade since in-flight Wi-Fi: cockpit alerts that scream at pilots before they undertake something disastrous.

Honeywell&#8217;s system provides real-time voice and text alerts when pilots make hazardous maneuvers, such as turning onto an incorrect runway, landing too rapidly, or trying to take off from a taxiway. 
It&#8217;s not only Southwest becoming serious about safety. Other airlines such as Alaska Airlines (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>) are bringing the system on board as well, with Airbus and Boeing (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) allegedly working on their own in-house alert systems. With the FAA considering new proposals to mandate safety alerts on new planes, and potentially retrofits in the future, this might be only the start.

Why Is Nuburu Stock Soaring On Friday?

NATO's 32 member states agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, representing a significant increase from the long-standing 2% benchmark.
The new target is the most ambitious in the alliance's 76-year-old history and a major political win for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. President</a> Donald Trump, who had long criticized European allies for underfunding their militaries.
"Our investments will ensure we have the forces, capabilities, resources, infrastructure, warfighting readiness, and resilience needed to deter and defend in line with our three core tasks of deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security," the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/official_texts_236705.htm" rel="noreferrer noopener">press release</a> stated.
The agreement includes a 3.5% floor for core defense spending, encompassing troops, weapons, and ammunition, and allows up to 1.5% for related areas, such as infrastructure, cybersecurity, and civilian preparedness.
Members must follow credible annual progress plans, with a major review anticipated for 2029. The declaration also commits allies to expand defense industrial cooperation, eliminate trade barriers, and invest in emerging technologies such as drones and satellite systems.
In a message that Trump shared on social media and AP News <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rutte-text-message-nato-signal-6263810ac3ca77a5bf7366499f51c772" rel="noreferrer noopener">relayed</a>, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Trump "will achieve something no American president in decades could get done."
Still, major issues were sidestepped. The summit delivered no new aid for Ukraine, offered no updated posture on Russia, and avoided discussing China. "All the big challenges were left off the agenda," Torrey Taussig, a former Europe director at the U.S. National Security Council, said, according <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/25/world/europe/nato-increase-military-spending-trump.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> the New York Times.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Carney Leans on Critical Minerals</h2>
The 5% goal significantly widens what counts as defense spending, offering nations flexibility to invest in long-term resilience—such as transportation networks and innovation hubs—tied to national security. NATO leaders framed the move as essential to confronting growing threats and maintaining credible deterrence.
"We are investing at the scale and urgency required by the new era of strategic competition," the official summit document stated.
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the country is ready to meet the new spending requirement, estimating that a 5% pledge would cost about CA$150 billion ($109 billion) over the next decade. In a separate development, Pratt &amp; Whitney announced the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/n45967520/rtxs-pratt-whitney-adds-itp-aero-to-gtf-mro-network" rel="noreferrer noopener">addition of ITP Aero</a> to its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network. The Madrid-based facility will service PW1500G and PW1900G engines used in the Airbus A220 and Embraer E-Jets E2 families, marking the 21st shop in the global GTF MRO network.
Eva Azoulay, CEO of ITP Aero, said the collaboration extends a longstanding partnership in GTF component production and enables faster service turnarounds for European customers.
The expansion highlights RTX&#8217;s continued investment in aviation sustainability and aftermarket services. With over 90,000 engines in operation globally, Pratt &amp; Whitney is scaling its infrastructure to meet the growing demand for cleaner and more efficient flight technologies.

The White House just unveiled a sweeping set of executive actions aimed at bolstering the future of America&#8217;s defense and aviation.
What Happened: On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed three executive orders aimed at revitalizing the country&#8217;s stalled aerospace ambitions, targeting the domestic production of drones, supersonic jets, and even electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The orders, announced by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), are designed to slash regulatory red tape, bolster U.S. supply chains, and accelerate real-world deployment of next-generation aviation.
&#8220;Decades of regulatory gridlock have grounded advancements in drones, flying cars, and supersonic flight in the U.S.&#8221; said OSTP Director Michael Kratsios, while adding that &#8220;President Trump's actions will unleash a new era of American aviation dominance, fostering innovation, driving economic growth, and protecting our national security.&#8221;

Among the key provisions of the orders include routine beyond-line-of-sight drone operations, that is allowing drones to fly beyond the visual range of operators. Followed by a pilot program for eVTOL aircraft for EMS, cargo, and defense logistics, alongside the repealing of longstanding rules that block supersonic flight testing.
The White House believes this regulatory overhaul will &#8220;empower our domestic drone economy to assist with critical infrastructure, emergency response, and long-distance cargo and medical delivery.&#8221;
The orders also address the growing security threats posed by criminal and foreign drone activity. According to the fact sheet, the administration will prioritize &#8220;real-time detection and identification of drones to safeguard national security.&#8221;

Trump Launches Aviation Overhaul: Archer, Joby, New Horizon, AeroVironment Rally As US Targets Drone, eVTOL, Supersonic Comeback

IperionX Limited (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IPX#NASDAQ">IPX</a>) shares surged Thursday after the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/g45790807/iperionx-awarded-u-s-department-of-defense-sbir-phase-iii-contract-for-up-to-us-99m" rel="noreferrer noopener">secured a major U.S. Department of Defense</a> contract to supply domestically produced titanium parts for military use.
The $99 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase III Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement enables the Pentagon to order titanium components directly from IperionX.
The contract permits U.S. defense agencies to commission task-specific orders as part of the &#8220;Low-Cost Domestic Titanium for Defense Applications&#8221; effort.
Early task orders will involve high-performance titanium fasteners manufactured at IperionX&#8217;s Virginia campus using proprietary technologies. The project supports skilled local jobs while advancing U.S. defense readiness.

IperionX Rockets 23% After Securing $99M Defense Contract For Domestic Titanium

Redwire Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDW#NYSE">RDW</a>), on Wednesday, announced its lunar and Martian construction tool, Mason, has passed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/06/b45767288/redwire-receives-nasa-approval-to-advance-cutting-edge-manufacturing-technology-for-building-infra" rel="noreferrer noopener">key NASA milestone</a>, completing its Critical Design Review (CDR). The toolset, developed under a $12.9 million NASA Tipping Point award, supports future off-world infrastructure needs.
Mason is designed to turn loose lunar or Martian soil, known as regolith, into solid surfaces like landing pads and roads. It includes three components: a grading blade (BASE), a compaction tool (PACT), and a microwave sintering device (M3LT). Together, they reduce hazards tied to dust and unstable terrain during rocket launches and human activity.
The technology aims to cut costs and improve safety for future space missions. Regolith can damage equipment, reduce mobility, and become airborne during launches, potentially endangering astronauts and satellites.

Redwire is working with several partners, including NASA's Kennedy Space Center Swamp Works, Lambda Technologies, the Colorado School of Mines, and the University of Central Florida.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to streamline operations and optimize spending, as reported by CBS News.
This initiative has raised concerns for major defense contractors, many of whom rely heavily on government contracts. Among the top players at risk are Lockheed Martin which has retreated almost 10% so far this year, RTX , General Dynamics, with a loss of 6.35% year-to-date, and Northrop Grumman, which has lost 6.5% so far this year.
With over $200 billion in annual federal contracts flowing into the sector, any cuts could significantly affect companies that derive nearly half their revenue from government spending, according to a report by Saxo Bank.
While U.S. defense spending may come under pressure, rising geopolitical tensions and commitments from NATO allies to boost their military budgets could create new opportunities for defense firms.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HII#NYSE">HII</a>) shares are trading lower after it reported&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43524381/hii-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">fourth-quarter&nbsp;FY24&nbsp;results</a>.
Sales and service revenue increased&nbsp;5.4%&nbsp;year-over-year to&nbsp;$3.00 billion, missing the&nbsp;consensus of&nbsp;$3.05 billion.
Ingalls Shipbuilding&nbsp;$736 million&nbsp;(-8.0%&nbsp;Y/Y), Newport News Shipbuilding&nbsp;$1.59 billion&nbsp;(-4.6%&nbsp;Y/Y), and Mission Technologies&nbsp;$713 million&nbsp;(-4.3%&nbsp;Y/Y).
Operating income decreased 64.7% Y/Y to $110 million, and the margin contracted by 616 bps to 3.7%. Segment operating income was $103 million (-68.8% Y/Y), and the margin was 3.4%, down 696 bps Y/Y.
EPS of&nbsp;$3.15, down 54.3%&nbsp;Y/Y, missing the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of&nbsp;$3.31</a>.&nbsp;
Operating cash flow plunged to $393 million&nbsp;in 2024 and free cash flow&nbsp;to $40 million, compared to&nbsp;$970 million&nbsp;and&nbsp;$692 million, respectively, in 2023.
New contract awards for 2024&nbsp;were&nbsp;$12.1&nbsp;billion, with a total backlog of around&nbsp;$48.7&nbsp;billion&nbsp;as of December 31, 2024.
Chris Kastner, president and CEO said, &#8220;We continue to make progress on ships put under contract pre-COVID, and are working diligently with our customers to put over $50 billion of new work under contract. Mission Technologies continued its strong track record of top line growth and margin expansion and secured an impressive $12 billion in total future contract value during 2024.&#8221;
FY25&nbsp;Outlook: Huntington Ingalls Industries sees sales of around $11.80 billion &#8211; $12.20 billion (vs. consensus of $12.10 billion), with expected Shipbuilding revenue of&nbsp;$8.9 billion &#8211; $9.1&nbsp;billion and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">corresponding&nbsp;operating margin of&nbsp;5.5% &#8211; 6.5%</a>.
Huntington&nbsp;Ingalls sees Mission&nbsp;Technologies&#8217;&nbsp;revenue of&nbsp;$2.9 billion &#8211; $3.1 billion, with an operating margin of&nbsp;4.0% &#8211; 4.5%&nbsp;and&nbsp;EBITDA margin of&nbsp;8.0% &#8211; 8.5%.
The company expects FY25 free cash flow of&nbsp;$300 million &#8211; $500 million.

Huntington Ingalls Sinks On Q4 Earnings Miss, Margins & Cash Flow Take A Hit

Defense <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/01/43013312/defense-stocks-fall-on-gaza-ceasefire-while-broader-market-rallies-whats-going-on">stocks dipped on Wednesday</a> following reports of a verbal ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, taking several related ETFs along.
ETFs like SPDR S&amp;P Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XAR#NYSE">XAR</a>), iShares U.S. Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ITA#BATS">ITA</a>), and Global X Funds Global X Defense Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHLD#NYSE">SHLD</a>) were slightly down as the defense sector lost its appeal to investors.
Nonetheless, the pullback was short-lived, as all three ETFs opened higher and retained momentum on Thursday. Moreover, neither the dip nor the rally was sharp. There can be many possibilities behind this. For starters, the fundamental strength of defense stocks are undeniable. 
Secondly, the market might still be taking time to process that a war of such scale can end so abruptly. Thirdly, another major longstanding war that also draws resources from the U.S. is ongoing between Russia and Ukraine. Thus, despite a short-term withdrawal of a few investors from defense ETFs, the longer-term story seems constructive.
Moreover, the ceasefire agreement does not mean that contracts will stop coming for defense companies. Raytheon Technologies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RTX#NYSE">RTX</a>), one of the largest holdings of all the aforementioned ETFs, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43034421/whats-going-on-with-rtx-corporation-stock-today">announced a $529 million contract</a> to supply a Patriot air&nbsp;and missile defense system to the Netherlands.

The SPDR S&amp;P Aerospace &amp; Defense ETF&#8217;s exposure to commercial aerospace alongside defense provides some insulation against geopolitical shifts. 
Meanwhile, Global X Funds Global X Defense Tech ETF&#8217;s beta of 0.4% means it is less reactive to market volatility.
The War Effect On Defense Stocks
Historically, periods of conflict have been a boon for defense stocks. The Middle East war saw heightened government spending on military contracts, propelling the Global X Defense Tech ETF to a 35% gain over the past year, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a>. 
Companies in this sector see increased demand during conflicts due to the surge in need for defense systems, technology and equipment.
While the ceasefire signals a de-escalation in the Middle East conflict, defense stocks and ETFs are unlikely to lose their long-term optimism. Geopolitical risks remain a persistent concern, and governments worldwide continue to prioritize defense budgets.
