The Moody's downgrade of U.S. credit on Friday sent shockwaves through markets, driving 30-year Treasury yields to 5% — a level unseen since October 2023 — reviving fears about debt sustainability and putting downward pressure on equity <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45492889/americas-credit-strength-just-got-cut-again-should-you-panic">valuations across the board.</a>
Moody's decision marks the third U.S. credit rating downgrade since 2011, following S&amp;P's move in 2011 and Fitch's in 2023.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">How Higher Treasury Yields Hurt Stock Markets</h1>
Higher yields ripple across the entire financial system, raising borrowing costs and changing how investors value stocks.
There are at least five channels via which higher Treasury yields pressure markets:
1. Bond Prices Fall, Increasing Market Volatility: As yields rise, prices of existing bonds drop — hurting current bondholders and increasing volatility. Rising Treasury yields also ripple through markets as a broad signal of tightening financial conditions.
2. Cost Of Capital Increases: Treasury yields serve as a benchmark for other forms of debt. When they rise, companies — especially those already heavily indebted — must pay more to borrow from investors. That slows investment, expansion and profitability, particularly for heavily leveraged firms.
3. Earnings Yield Becomes Less Competitive: As of mid-May, the S&amp;P 500 earnings yield stood at 3.5%, trailing the 10-year Treasury yield by a full percentage point. This reverses the typical risk-return tradeoff, making &#8220;risk-free&#8221; government bonds more attractive than equities — and increasing the likelihood of investors shifting capital away from stocks.

4. Discount Rates Rise, Valuations Drop: Treasury yields act as a benchmark discount rate in stock valuation models. Higher yields reduce the present value of expected cash flows — particularly for growth stocks and small caps that rely on future profitability.
5. Consumer Spending Gets Squeezed: Higher Treasury yields — particularly longer-dated ones — also push up rates on mortgages, credit cards and loans. That weakens consumer demand and further weighs on earnings outlooks for consumer-facing sectors.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Historical Reactions To U.S. Credit Downgrades: 2011 vs. 2023</h1>
While the full effect of the May 2025 Moody's downgrade is still unfolding, we can look back at 2011 and 2023 for comparison. 
In both instances, equity markets sold off sharply, and volatility spiked in the two months following the downgrade. However, their trajectories diverged in the months that followed.
In 2011, markets staged a strong rebound in October, with the S&amp;P 500 — as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — rallying over 10%, as investors looked past the downgrade. In contrast, 2023 saw continued equity losses through October, before stocks finally bottomed out and launched a powerful rally that lasted through February 2025, driven by easing inflation and AI-fueled tech momentum.
Reactions across other asset classes were more mixed. Treasury bonds — looking at the 10-year benchmark — rose in 2011, as investors fled to safety despite the downgrade. But in 2023, they declined, reflecting fears about long-term debt sustainability and inflation.
The U.S. dollar strengthened in both cases, defying expectations that credit downgrades would dent its safe-haven status.
Gold, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) — saw mixed performance, surging after the 2011 downgrade but falling in the immediate aftermath of the 2023 cut before rebounding.

Retail earnings are front and center, offering a fresh read on how spending habits are holding up amid persistent conversations around inflation and tariffs. Last week, Walmart gave us an early look, and now we'll hear from TJ Maxx, Target, Home Depot, and Lowe's.
TJ Maxx and Target, in particular, will be closely watched. Both serve as bellwethers for consumer behavior, especially in the face of pricing pressures and shifting demand. On the earnings calls, expect analysts and investors to dig into any commentary around pricing, especially after Walmart hinted at potential increases tied to tariffs. Will others follow suit?
It was a strong week for markets. With tariff-related tensions cooling, optimism has returned. We saw a finalized deal with the UK, a pause in talks with China, and a series of other potential agreements making headlines, all fueling bullish sentiment.
Inflation also surprised to the downside last week, challenging the prevailing narrative. While many economists still expect inflation to pick up in the coming months, I believe we're more likely to see one-off price increases in specific sectors rather than broad, sustained inflation.
With earnings season in full swing and momentum on our side, I remain bullish. If current trends hold, I believe we could see new all-time highs in the coming days.

Where Does The Consumer Stand: Retail Earnings On Tap This Week

B Of A Securities analyst Sara Senatore increased the price forecast for CAVA Group, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAVA#NYSE">CAVA</a>) from $112 to $121 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CAVA/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">while reiterating a Buy rating</a>.
On Friday, CAVA&#8217;s first-quarter revenue increased 28.2% year-over-year to $331.83 million, beating the&nbsp;consensus estimate of $326.88 million, and adjusted EPS of 22 cents, beating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/restaurants/25/05/45453995/cava-group-reports-q1-earnings-revenue-jumps-28-company-bumps-up-new-restaurant-openings-guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst estimates of 14 cents</a>.
CAVA expects full-year same-restaurant sales (SSS) growth to be between 6% and 8%, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">unchanged from prior guidance</a>.

The analyst notes that first-quarter 2025 SSS growth of 10.8% modestly exceeded BofA&#8217;s estimate of 9.7% and the Visible Alpha consensus of 10.4%.
This makes it particularly noteworthy due to its traffic-driven nature (+7.5%) as CAVA maintained pricing discipline (~1.7% compared to the broader food-away-from-home Consumer Price Index (FAFH CPI) of 3.6%), adds the analyst.
Considering the headwinds from weather and LA fires, the analyst estimates the implied 3-year stacked SSS growth was 3-5+ percentage points ahead of CAVA&#8217;s high-30s guidance (reported additive stack was ~+41.5%, including weather impact).
The analyst believes CAVA&#8217;s FY25 SSS guidance is likely conservative, citing the strong performance of recent menu innovations and advertising, along with upcoming catalysts such as menu news (chicken shawarma testing in Dallas, Texas and Western Florida) and the loyalty program.
The analyst maintained the FY25 SSS growth estimate at 7.4%, with stronger traffic growth (+5.2% versus +3.5% previously) offset by a lower mix (+0.5% versus +1.8% previously).
Senatore estimates FY25 Restaurant Level Margin (RLM) of 25.3% and has raised pre-opening costs estimates to $15.2 million from $13.3 million previously, reflecting the new guidance for faster unit growth. As a result, the analyst revised FY25 EPS estimates to 58 cents from 61 cents previously.
Last week, TD Cowen analyst Andrew M. Charles reiterated a Buy&nbsp;rating and maintained&nbsp;a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/05/45476152/cava-beats-q1-expectations-analyst-names-it-a-top-pick-amid-expansion-push" rel="noreferrer noopener">$120&nbsp;price forecast on the stock</a>.
He noted the company&#8217;s unique advantage from organic brand discovery and meaningful sales catalysts. He sees potential upside to 2025 SSS and adjusted EBITDA guidance, maintains estimates, and a &#8220;Top Pick&#8221; rating.
Price Action: CAVA shares are trading lower by 4.65% to $92.30 at last check Monday.
