WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS, May 30 (Reuters) - President <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/donald-trump/">Donald Trump</a> will maintain the traditional role of a U.S. general at the helm of NATO, at least for now, three U.S. officials, a Western official and a NATO source said, even as Washington pushes European allies to take more responsibility for their security.
Trump himself privately communicated the decision to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Western official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The Pentagon, White House and NATO did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The decision will relieve European NATO allies and even some of Trump's fellow Republicans amid concerns that Washington's tough talk on Europe, and skepticism about the war in Ukraine, could signal a swift retrenchment in America's military leadership.
Still, officials say U.S. warnings that Trump's administration needs to shift its focus to Asia and homeland security are sincere. While no decisions have been made, Trump's administration has discussed possible troop reductions in Europe, where about 80,000 U.S. personnel are based today.
The next expected U.S. nominee for the positions of both Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and U.S. European Command (EUCOM) is Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, the U.S. officials said.
The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of an announcement expected in the coming days.
The position of SACEUR, which oversees all NATO operations in Europe, has been filled by a U.S. general since its creation after World War Two. U.S. Army General Dwight D. Eisenhower became the alliance's first SACEUR in 1951.
Since taking office in January, Trump's administration has pressured Europe to ramp up its own defense spending, saying Europe should be primarily responsible for defense on the European continent.
How quickly Europe assumes such a role remains a big question, and there have been discussions within the administration about the possibility of handing over the job of Supreme Allied Commander Europe to a European nation, officials say.
"Make no mistake: President Trump will not allow anyone to turn Uncle Sam into 'Uncle Sucker'," U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL1N3P40W2">told reporters</a> during a visit to NATO headquarters in February.
During Trump's first term, maintaining NATO and the leading U.S. role in the alliance was a top priority for his Pentagon chiefs. Retired Marine Corps General Jim Mattis, his first defense secretary, resigned in part because of Trump's skepticism towards NATO.
While the United States was still expected to pressure Europe to do more, and could in the future start redirecting U.S. troops elsewhere as part of a broader review of U.S. deployments, the U.S. decision to maintain the role of SACEUR is certain to be welcomed by key allies of Trump in Congress.
The two Republican lawmakers who lead the Pentagon's oversight committees in the U.S. Congress issued a <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL1N3Q21CF">rare joint statement</a> in March expressing alarm about a potential U.S. withdrawal from the SACEUR command structure.
Grynkewich, who is now the director for operations at the U.S. military's Joint Staff, would succeed Army General Christopher Cavoli, who has been in the role since shortly after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, helping oversee billions of dollars in U.S. security assistance to Kyiv.
Trump entered office in January predicting he would be able to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. In the months since, he has found that the conflict is more intractable than he believed and has blamed his predecessor, Joe Biden, for allowing it to happen.

On Wednesday, May 28, U.S. markets closed lower as investors digested cautious Federal Reserve signals and weakness in chip-related stocks. European stock markets rallied Tuesday after officials in Brussels agreed to speed up tariff negotiations with Washington, a move that investors hope will head off a trans-Atlantic trade war and remove a major overhang for global risk assets.
The breakthrough followed U.S. President Donald Trump's weekend decision to postpone a threatened 50% levy on all European Union imports until 9 July. With the immediate tariff deadline pushed back, U.S. equities opened sharply higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added about 600 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose more than 2%.&nbsp;
Euro-area blue-chips tracked the move, and pan-European exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw some of their heaviest buying in weeks.

Investor appetite was also buoyed by a surprise rebound in U.S. consumer confidence and a broad rally in sovereign bonds that pushed the 30-year Treasury yield below 5%. The euro edged to a one-month high near $1.14, underlining renewed demand for European assets as trade tensions eased.

The EU's decision to accelerate negotiations narrows the window for tariff escalation and gives multinationals on both sides of the Atlantic greater clarity on supply-chain planning. Semiconductor bellwether Nvidia Corp's (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) anticipated earnings report on Wednesday may reinforce the global risk-on tone if guidance proves resilient.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Three Routes to European Exposure</h2>
For U.S. investors looking to position ahead of a potential trade agreement, here are a range of vehicles that balance simplicity, liquidity and sector choice.
Broad-based Europe ETFs. Fast-tracked EU-U.S. negotiations have injected fresh momentum into European markets that were battered by tariff headlines earlier this month. On Friday, May 23, U.S. markets closed lower as investors turned cautious ahead of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26, amid renewed trade tensions and economic uncertainty. Stocks ended the week in negative territory after President Trump reignited tariff fears by proposing steep duties on European imports. Major indexes declined, led by tech and consumer losses. Apple fell on tariff concerns, while megacaps and chipmakers also retreated amid growing market unease.
According to economic data, new single-family home sales in the U.S. rose 10.9% in April, reaching an annualized pace of 743,000 units.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors closed lower Friday, led by sharp losses in tech, consumer discretionary, and communication stocks, while consumer staples and utilities outperformed with modest gains.
The Dow closed lower by 0.61% at 41,603.07, the S&amp;P 500 dropped 0.67% to 5,802.82, and the Nasdaq slid 1.00% to 18,737.21.

President Donald Trump has sparked fear again of an all-out trade war, causing shockwaves in the stock market and leaving investors in the dark. In a post on Truth Social, Trump directly targeted tech giant Apple (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), threatening a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45584696/trump-threatens-tim-cook-to-manufacture-iphones-in-the-us-or-face-at-least-25-tariffs">25% tariff on iPhones produced outside America</a>. Not resting there, he threatened a sweeping<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45585283/trump-tariff-threat-hits-europe-stocks-sink-as-50-duties-loom"> 50% tariff on all imports from the European Union</a> beginning June 1.
Although it is uncertain if Trump can unilaterally impose company-specific tariffs, the markets didn&#8217;t wait for answers. Apple stocks fell almost 3% on Friday trading, and investors are now left wondering how to rebalance their portfolios if protectionism returns.

The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) holds more than 12.5% in Apple, and the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VGT#NYSE">VGT</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) also hold 17.2% and 7.7% respectively.
Investors seeking to trim their exposure to Apple-focused funds could look to diversified global tech ETFs or equal-weight rivals that soften concentration risk. The iShares Global Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IXN#NYSE">IXN</a>) can be a good choice. Despite having significant exposure to Apple, the fund dedicates around 20% of its portfolio to international tech stocks.
Retail Rout? ETFs Exposed to Walmart and Amazon
Retailing behemoths Walmart (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) and Amazon are also in Trump&#8217;s sights. Last week, Walmart suggested it might have to raise prices because of higher tariff costs. Trump responded, telling the retailer to &#8220;eat the tariffs.&#8221;
The SPDR S&amp;P Retail ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XRT#NYSE">XRT</a>), whose holdings include both Walmart and Amazon, may experience more volatility.
