The investment aims to track the daily percentage changes in its shares’ per share NAV, mirroring the daily percentage changes in the spot price of light, sweet crude oil delivered to Cushing, Oklahoma. This alignment is measured by the daily shifts in the price of a specified short-term futures contract on light, sweet crude oil known as the “Benchmark Oil Futures Contract,” along with the interest earned on USO’s collateral holdings, after deducting USO’s expenses. USO primarily invests in futures contracts for various fuels, including light, sweet crude oil, other types of crude oil, diesel-heating oil, gasoline, natural gas, and other petroleum-based fuels.

On Thursday, December 19, U.S. markets closed mixed after initial gains faded. Stocks mainly remained flat as the Fed forecasted fewer 2025 rate cuts and higher inflation. Jobless claims fell, and Q3 GDP was revised to 3.1%, supporting the Fed&#8217;s view. The Dow ended its 10-session losing streak.
The U.S. economy grew 3.1% in Q3, revised from 2.8% while existing home sales rose 4.8% in November to 4.15 million. Initial jobless claims fell by 22,000 to 220,000 in early December, below estimates of 230,000.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower, led by losses in materials, real estate, and energy. In contrast, utilities and financials outperformed, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.04% and closed at 42,342.24, the S&amp;P 500 closed lower by 0.09% at 5,867.08, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.10% to finish at 19,372.77.

On Wednesday, December 18th, U.S. markets closed sharply lower, with the Dow dropping over 1,100 points—its steepest decline since August and longest losing streak since 1974. The Fed cut rates by 25 basis points as expected but signaled fewer cuts in 2025. Markets reacted sharply to the less dovish tone despite assurances of economic strength and progress on inflation.
Fed Chair Powell adopted a hawkish tone as the Fed cut rates by 0.25% but reduced 2025 rate cut projections to two, down from four in September and below market expectations.
The U.S. current account deficit widened to $310.9 billion in Q3, exceeding the estimated $284 billion. Housing starts fell 1.8% in November to an annualized 1.289 million units from 1.312 million in October.
S&amp;P 500 ended in the red, with consumer discretionary, real estate, and communication services stocks suffering the largest declines.

Global Markets Slide On Fed's Hawkish Rate Policy; U.S. Dollar Eases Slightly After Hitting Two-Year High - Global Markets Today While US Slept

As markets brace for the Federal Reserve's final policy meeting of the year, scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Goldman Sachs highlighted 20 exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that have historically shown outsized <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/federal-reserve">moves around Fed decision days</a>.
While a 25-basis-point rate cut to a target range of 4.25%-4.50% is widely anticipated, the market's focus is on the Fed's forward guidance, particularly the Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) and the updated &#8220;dot plot.&#8221;
Following December's expected cut, Goldman Sachs projects a more measured pace of easing next year, forecasting rate cuts in March, June, and September, with the terminal rate seen at 3.50%-3.75%.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Dynamics Around Fed Days</h3>
U.S. equity markets have displayed strong short-term gains during Fed meeting weeks in 2024. 
Investors employing a simple strategy of buying the S&amp;P 500 index at market close before a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcement and selling at close the following day have captured median returns of 1.1% across the past seven meetings.
Yet those extending the trade horizon to 15 sessions post-Fed meeting have enjoyed significantly larger average gains of 3.29%, more than double the short-term returns. Notably, every Fed meeting this year has resulted in positive 15-day returns.
"We observe that U.S. banking ETFs, such as SPDR S&amp;P Bank ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KBE#NYSE">KBE</a>) and SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>), have seen unusually large moves on FOMC days since 2022" Goldman analysts wrote in a recent note.
For bond-focused investors, the report highlights consistent post-meeting gains in high-yield and investment-grade ETFs like iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HYG#NYSE">HYG</a>) and iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LQD#NYSE">LQD</a>).
Meanwhile, energy-focused ETFs, such as the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), have seen negative reactions.

China And Europe Markets Advance, Dollar Strengthens Ahead Of Fed Meeting - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Ukraine conducted an operation in Moscow that targeted and killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's Radiological, Chemical and Biological <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/12/42280373/us-announces-725-million-arms-package-for-ukraine">Defense Troops.&nbsp;</a>
The attack was carried out using an explosive device hidden in a scooter, according to a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/ukraine-says-it-killed-senior-russian-general-in-moscow-bombing-9e315b29">report</a> from the Wall Street Journal. Kirillov was killed in the explosion after he exited a residential building with his assistant, who also died in the blast. The explosive device was remotely triggered and packed with shrapnel equivalent to one kilogram of TNT.&nbsp;

Ukrainian officials attributed the operation to the country's Security Service (SBU), which had recently accused Kirillov of war crimes involving banned chemical weapons in Ukraine. Kirillov is the highest-ranking Russian military official killed in Moscow since the war began.&nbsp;
Russian authorities classified the incident as terrorism and the Russia Security Council Deputy Head Dmitry Medvedev warned of "inevitable retribution" against Kyiv.&nbsp;
Financial Implications: The Russia-Ukraine war has driven the price of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/partner/fintech/24/12/42482711/trading-agricultural-commodities-the-how-and-why-heading-into-2025">several commodities </a>higher, including gold and oil.&nbsp;
The conflict contributed to higher gold prices due to increased geopolitical tensions and investors seeking safe-haven assets. An ounce of gold closed at $2,652 on Tuesday, up from around $1,800 per ounce in 2021 before the conflict began. 
The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), which tracks the price of gold by holding physical gold bullion in a trust, has risen more than 30% over the past year.&nbsp;
Oil has also been impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war as investors consider potential disruptions to Russian oil infrastructure and Russia&#8217;s oil exports face challenges due to sanctions and price caps, limiting market supply.&nbsp;
A barrel of West Texas Intermediate closed at $71.04 on Tuesday and the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), which tracks the daily prices of WTI, gained more than 14% since November 2021.&nbsp;

Gains in the consumer sector offset weaker manufacturing data. Investor sentiment remained upbeat, driven by hopes for easing rates and economic resilience.
On the economic front, the NY Empire State Manufacturing Index dropped sharply to 0.20 in December from 31.2 the previous month, missing expectations. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global services PMI rose to 58.5 in December, while the manufacturing PMI fell to 48.3 from 49.7 in November.

Broadcom&#8217;s optimistic AI chip forecast drove a significant rise in shares, boosting tech sentiment as markets anticipate a Federal Reserve rate cut in the coming days.
In economic data, U.S. data showed import prices rose 0.1%, while the Producer Price Index increased 0.4%.

On Thursday, December 12th, U.S. markets closed lower as investors assessed economic data ahead of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s meeting. Mixed signals from rising producer prices and climbing unemployment claims fueled uncertainty about inflation and the Fed&#8217;s rate cut trajectory, prompting profit-taking after recent market highs.
In economic data, U.S. initial jobless claims climbed to 242,000 in early December, surpassing market expectations of 220,000, signaling potential labor market softening. Meanwhile, core producer prices increased by 0.2% month-over-month in November.
The majority of S&amp;P 500 sectors fell, led by losses in healthcare, consumer discretionary, and communication services, while consumer staples gained.

Asia Ex-India Fall On China Stimulus Concerns, Europe Up; Dollar Gains - Global Markets Today While US Slept

At least one aspect of Israel&#8217;s multifront war is expected to come to an end if the militant group Hamas comes to ceasefire terms <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global">with Israel</a>.
What Happened: So far, Hamas has yielded at least two of Israel's demands for a cease-fire agreement in Gaza, according to a Thursday <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/israel-gaza-palestine-ceasefire-hostage-negotiations-d599e1d1">Wall Street Journal</a> report. 
The development comes after previous negotiations collapsed. And, just three months ago, certain <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40955425/top-us-officials-skeptical-of-israel-hamas-cease-fire-and-hostage-deal-before-bidens-term-ends-repor">senior U.S. officials were skeptical</a> that a hostage-release deal would occur before the end of President Joe Biden‘s term.
The scenario has changed drastically. 
U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke to the press in Tel Aviv Thursday after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel.
&#8220;Hamas started this war,&#8221; Sullivan said, optimistic that a ceasefire and hostage release &#8220;can happen.&#8221;

Sullivan said he is set to visit Doha, Qatar and Cairo to close a deal &#8220;this month.&#8221; 
Hamas is reportedly willing to allow Israeli forces to stay in Gaza temporarily when the fighting stops, the WSJ reported. A list of hostages, including U.S. citizens, is expected to be released as part of a ceasefire pact.
Whether the ceasefire would last or be fully enforced remains to be seen.
Israel and Hezbollah were expected to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/11/42199447/netanyahu-backs-cease-fire-deal-with-hezbollah-israeli-hardliner-calls-for-security-zone-inside-lebanon">pause fighting in Lebanon</a> last month, but <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/24/12/42279102/israel-hezbollah-trade-strikes-in-latest-sign-of-crumbling-ceasefire">attacks continued into December</a>. At least five people were killed in Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon in the last 24 hours, per <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/12/11/israeli-strikes-kill-five-in-southern-lebanon-amid-shaky-ceasefire">Al Jazeera</a>, citing the country's Health Ministry.
Hezbollah began firing rockets toward Israel after Hamas attacked <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/10/35136071/israel-under-siege-unprecedented-hamas-attack-sparks-intense-clashes-netanyahu-says-we-are-at-war">Israel on Oct. 7, 2023</a>.
Why It Matters: The ceasefire agreement would come as the balance of power in the Middle East changes.
This week, Israel seized the buffer zone as Bashar al-Assad&#8216;s rule in Syria collapsed. Al-Assad and his family were subsequently <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42381587/bashar-al-assad-and-his-family-granted-asylum-by-russia-kremlin-source-says-always-spoken-in-favor-of-political-settlement">granted asylum by Russia</a>.
Assad&#8217;s regime was considered a lifeline to Hezbollah.
