The Small Business Optimism Index surged to 101.7 in November 2024, marking a a significant rebound from October's 93.7, as reported by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) on Friday.
This data not only marks the highest level since June 2021 but also breaks a 34-month streak by rising above its 50-year average of 98.
The catalyst? Confidence in post-election economic policies and hopes for reduced inflationary pressures.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Optimism Breakdown: What's Fueling The Surge?</h3>
"The election results signal a major shift in economic policy, leading to a surge in optimism among small business owners," said NFIB chief economist Bill Dunkelberg. 
The biggest driver of the optimism surge was the net percent of owners expecting economic improvement, which jumped 41 points from October to reach 36%, the highest reading in over four years.
"Main Street also became more certain about future business conditions following the election, breaking a nearly three-year streak of record high uncertainty," Dunkelberg added.
Optimism seems to be back on the menu for America's small business owners, driven by several encouraging trends:

<li>The percentage of business owners believing it's a good time to expand rose 8 points to a net 14%, the best reading since June 2021.</li>
<li>Expectations for higher real sales volumes climbed 18 points to a net 14% seasonally adjusted, marking the highest level since February 2020.</li>
<li>A net 5% of owners reported paying higher interest rates on recent loans, unchanged from October's lowest level since January 2022.</li>
<li>28% of small businesses plan capital investments in the next six months, up 6 points from October and the strongest reading since January 2022. </li>
<li>Of those who invested in the past six months, 54% spent on equipment, 22% purchased vehicles, and 14% improved or expanded facilities.</li>
<li>Profitability is also showing signs of life. Reports of positive profit trends improved by 7 points to a net negative 26%, the least negative reading of 2024.</li>
<li>53% of businesses reporting higher profits credited stronger sales volumes, while 13% of them highlighted higher selling prices.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Main Street's Remaining Challenges: Labor And Inflation</h3>
Despite rising optimism, small business owners still face hurdles. 
Labor quality and inflation remain the most significant issues, with 19% of respondents citing labor as their top concern and 20% pointing to inflation, although the latter eased slightly from October's reading.
The tight labor market persists, with 36% of owners reporting job openings they couldn't fill in November, up one point from the previous month. Among those trying to hire, 87% said they found few or no qualified applicants. 
Compensation pressures reflect this trend, with a net 32% of owners raising wages last month and 28% planning additional increases in the next quarter.
On the inflation front, 24% of owners raised average selling prices in November, up three points from October. Notably, price hikes were most frequent in the wholesale sector at 50%, followed by finance at 46% and retail at 43%.
Credit access has tightened slightly, with 7% of owners saying their last loan was harder to obtain than previous attempts, up from October's reading. Still, only 5% of respondents listed financing as their top business issue.

The upbeat NFIB Small Business Optimism Index had little effect on the Russell 2000's price movement on Tuesday.

US Small Business Optimism Hits 3-Year High As Election Results 'Signal A Major Shift'

U.S. stocks were mixed, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining around 100 points on Tuesday.
Shares of United Natural Foods, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNFI#NYSE">UNFI</a>) rose sharply during Tuesday's session following better-than-expected first-quarter financial results and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/UNFI/earnings">raised its FY25 guidance.</a>
United Natural Foods posted adjusted earnings of 16 cents per share, compared to market estimates for a loss of 1 cent per share. The company's quarterly sales came in at $7.87 billion versus expectations of $7.61 billion.
United Natural Foods shares surged 29% to $31.82 on Tuesday.

United Natural Foods shares are trading higher following better-than-expected Q1 financial results and raised its FY25 guidance.

Grocery wholesaler&nbsp;United Natural Foods Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNFI#NYSE">UNFI</a>) shares are trading higher after the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/b42409262/united-natural-foods-inc-reports-first-quarter-fiscal-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported first-quarter FY25 earnings</a>.
The company reported a&nbsp;sales increase of&nbsp;4.2% year over year to&nbsp;$7.87&nbsp;billion,&nbsp;beating the analyst consensus estimate of&nbsp;$7.61 billion.
Revenue growth is driven by a 2% increase in wholesale unit volumes, boosted by new business from both existing and new customers, along with inflation.
Gross margin contracted to&nbsp;13.2%&nbsp;from&nbsp;13.6% last year due to weak product margin rates and business mix. The gross profit upped&nbsp;0.8% to&nbsp;$1.0 billion.
Adjusted EBITDA rose 14.5%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$134&nbsp;million. Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$0.16 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the consensus loss estimate of&nbsp;$0.01</a>.
Free cash flow stood at&nbsp;$(159) million&nbsp;in the quarter. As of November 2, the company had approximately&nbsp;$37&nbsp;million&nbsp;in cash, plus the unused capacity of around $1.14&nbsp;billion&nbsp;under its asset-based lending facility.

Monday marked the sixth consecutive day of negative breadth in the S&amp;P 500 Index, Willie Delwiche, CMT, CFA said. &#8220;This matches the longest streak of negative breadth since we went eight days in a row in December 2018,&#8221; he said.
Wednesday&#8217;s release of November&#8217;s consumer price index will provide insights into inflation trends. Federal Reserve officials are currently in a quiet period ahead of their December meeting.

Cues From The Last Session
U.S. stock markets closed lower on Monday, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite pulling back from recent record highs. The tech sector was a major drag, led by declines in Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>).
Nvidia shares fell over 2% after a Chinese regulatory probe into potential antitrust violations. AMD, meanwhile, dropped nearly 6% following a downgrade from BofA Securities.
Despite the Monday dip, the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq had gained 0.96% and 3.34%, respectively, over the past three weeks. The Dow Jones, however, shed 0.6% during the same period.
On the economic front, U.S. wholesale inventories rose slightly in October, aligning with expectations.
While most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed lower, healthcare and real estate stocks bucked the trend and finished the day in positive territory.

Insights From Analysts:
Talking about the upcoming decision by FOMC on the interest rates, Jeremy Siegel, said, &#8220;I anticipate a 25-basis-point cut in December, paired with a strong signal to pause further easing—a so-called hawkish cut.&#8221;
Siegel is a senior economist at WisdomTree and emeritus professor of finance at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
&#8220;Inflation remains well-contained, though the University of Michigan's one-year inflation expectations shot up to 2.9%, warranting close attention and possibly signaling concerns about Trump's tariff policies,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;U.S. payrolls for November showed the economy is adding jobs at a healthy clip. Wage growth remains above the level that would allow inflation to settle at the Fed's 2% target – a reason we do not see the Fed cutting rates sharply,&#8221; according to a BlackRock note.
As per Siegel, &#8220;equities remain strong,&#8221; but at 22 times earnings, its &#8220;valuations are not cheap.&#8221;
&#8220;Investors should be careful about becoming over-exuberant in December&#8221; he added saying that he &#8220;could see a muted and rather disappointing next few weeks, while a better Q1.&#8221; Siegel also said, &#8220;…2025 is unlikely to be as strong a market as we had in 2023 and 2024.&#8221;
&#8220;Robust economic growth, broad earnings growth, and a quality tilt underpin our conviction,&#8221; said BlackRock in their note. They added that they are &#8220;overweight in U.S. stocks versus other regions.&#8221;
BlackRock said, &#8220;We see the AI buildout and adoption creating opportunities across sectors. We tap into beneficiaries outside the tech sector.&#8221;
&#8220;We see valuations for big tech backed by strong earnings, and less lofty valuations for other sectors,&#8221; the note added.
Siegel also said that AI-driven productivity gains will influence growth trends in 2025. &#8220;While AI cannot yet replace all forms of labor, its impact on middle management and sectors like transportation could prove transformative, offering both risks and rewards for forward-looking investors,&#8221; he said.
