Wall Street economists breathed a sigh of relief last week when the <a href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/microeconomics/hhdc">Federal Reserve Bank of New York's report</a> on household debt in the first quarter disclosed a 2% drop in credit card balances, falling by $29 billion. These folks have grown cautious examining Americans' near-record-level revolving debt, $1,282 trillion in the first quarter, worried they lack the assets to pay their bills. This can signal economic stress that precedes a recession.&nbsp;
Total household debt still rose by $167 billion in the quarter, reaching $18.2 trillion. Housing, auto loans and student loans contributed to the total, highlighting major challenges in maintaining a healthy economy. Student loans pose the most troubling obstacle to prosperity right now, with President Donald Trump restarting payment requirements.&nbsp;

Bankrate senior industry analyst Ted Rossman <a href="https://www.bankrate.com/credit-cards/news/credit-card-balances-fell-q1-2025-borrowers-still-underwater/">warned economists</a> to tread lightly after the report, noting that credit card balances "almost always fall in the first quarter, because people go on this post-holiday spending detox." He explained that borrowers often make New Year&#8217;s resolutions to "spend less, save more, pay off debt" and "use tax refund money to pay off debt." However, balances "almost always rise in the second and third quarters" and "really spike in the fourth quarter."
Credit card usage has skyrocketed since the pandemic, jumping 54% in the last four years. Fortunately, benign reasons may be responsible for at least part of the surge. A tech-savvy generation has popularized germfree electronic transactions since COVID, disrupting formerly cash-heavy venues like supermarkets, pharmacies and transportation. Even so, stressed-out Americans trying to make ends meet are playing a major role in the debt spike.

According to Rossman, about half of Americans now pay off their credit card balances each month, avoiding interest rates that average above 20%. This crowd is less profitable for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/V">Visa (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>)</a>, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/MA">Mastercard (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MA#NYSE">MA</a>)</a> and other payment processors, accessing lucrative perks that include travel points and cashback programs. Those who don't pay their balances each month assume the burden, stuck with high interest rates to compensate for more affluent or disciplined customers.
Credit card borrowers under economic stress are climbing a very tall hill because the average balance is now approaching $6,000 per month. When they don't pay their balances, the ‘minimum payment' becomes a lucrative trap for card processors, taking an average 18 or more years for borrowers with a 20% interest rate to close out the debt. It will also incur nearly $10,000 in interest payments.&nbsp;

Nonprofit credit counseling leader <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/01/17/3011652/0/en/Money-Management-International-Reports-Surge-in-Debt-Counseling-in-2024-Disproportionate-Increase-Among-Young-Adults.html">Money Management International</a> reported a 35% spike in new clients last year, fueled by young adults – especially <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/05/01/3072462/0/en/New-Data-from-Nonprofit-MMI-Reveals-Rise-in-Men-Seeking-Credit-Counseling-Despite-Higher-Incomes.html">single men</a> – facing the reality of loans under default. JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee shared earnings previews for several prominent hardware companies, cautioning that these firms may contend with ongoing demand uncertainty and renewed tariff risks in their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">upcoming earnings reports</a>.
Chatterjee sees another round of conservative results in the coming week, with stock movements more likely to reflect how investors interpret management&#8217;s efforts to either de-risk the second half of the year or contain expectations for potential full-year downside, especially after stronger-than-expected performances in the first half.
In contrast to HP Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPQ#NYSE">HPQ</a>) and Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>), the analyst sees Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HPE#NYSE">HPE</a>) and NetApp, Inc. Conversely, the analyst expects HPQ and HPE to be more sensitive to macro trends throughout the year. The analyst also notes that while NTAP shows greater resilience, its revenue upside is limited, as it relies on market share gains to counteract any macro weakness.
Here are the analyst&#8217;s take on some key hardware stocks:
Dell Technologies Inc.: The analyst reiterated the Overweight rating on the stock, raising the price <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/DELL/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forecast from $108 to $111</a>.
Chatterjee projects the upcoming first-quarter report to look solid on the surface, with strong PC and server demand boosting revenue and margins benefiting from a lower-than-expected mix of AI server sales. However, the analyst cautions that the tariff landscape remains a key concern.
Chatterjee writes that this issue will likely be reflected in second-quarter guidance and possibly in the fiscal 2026 outlook, as the company&#8217;s current baseline assumes higher tariff levels than previously expected, even with reciprocal tariff pauses in place.
The analyst projects revenue of $23.6 billion, reflecting a 6% year-over-year increase. He also predicts gross margins to come in at 22.5%, with operating margins forecasted at 7.9%, pointing to modest strength in profitability metrics.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company: Chatterjee sees the stock as the most favorably positioned among hardware <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/HPE/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">names going into earnings, at least on a near-term basis</a>.
The analyst notes that the company&#8217;s guidance already factors in a slowdown in AI server revenue and assumes a higher tariff burden than peers.
Additionally, he highlights potential upside from stronger networking demand, supported by recent positive results from companies like Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CSCO#NASDAQ">CSCO</a>), Extreme Networks, Inc., and Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNPR#NYSE">JNPR</a>).
Chatterjee estimates revenue at $32.4 billion, reflecting 8% year-over-year growth. He forecasts gross margins at 28.7% and operating margins at 9.5%.
HP Inc.: Per the analyst, the company is in a strong position to post a solid second-quarter result, supported by stronger-than-expected revenue as PC demand was likely pulled <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/HPQ/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">forward ahead of potential tariff-driven price hikes</a>.
Chatterjee notes that this comes with limited margin pressure, helped by delayed policy effects, inventory management, and other mitigating factors.
However, he cautions that macroeconomic uncertainty could limit how much of these near-term gains carry into future quarters, as the company faces two key challenges: navigating higher tariffs than previously guided for and uncertainty around PC demand in the second half of fiscal 2025 following earlier-than-usual buying.
The analyst reiterated the Overweight rating on the stock, raising the price forecast from $29 to $30.
NetApp, Inc.: The analyst expects NetApp to see stable demand, supported by new product launches and delayed deals from the previous quarter, leading to a slight revenue beat in F4Q25E. However, FY26 revenue growth is projected to be in the low-to-mid single digits, below long-term averages, due to a muted macro environment and U.S. Public Sector headwinds.
Despite this, EPS is anticipated to exceed consensus due to resilient gross margins (improved product margins and higher Public Cloud revenue mix) and better operating discipline. This positive outlook is expected to drive NTAP&#8217;s valuation multiple back to recent year averages (14x-15x) from the current 13x.

SharpLink Gaming (SBET) Stock Soars 53%: What's Going On?

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WSM#NYSE">WSM</a>) saw several analysts reiterate their coverage, with one analyst making a modest reduction to the price forecast following <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/wsm/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thursday&#8217;s first-quarter results</a>.
The retailer reported revenue of&nbsp;$1.73 billion, a&nbsp;4.2%&nbsp;increase from the same quarter last year and ahead of Wall Street&#8217;s estimate of&nbsp;$1.67 billion. GAAP earnings per share of&nbsp;$1.85&nbsp;beat the&nbsp;analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/45569507" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of&nbsp;$1.77</a>.
Williams-Sonoma maintains its fiscal 2025 and long-term&nbsp;outlook&nbsp;despite absorbing higher costs from the current tariff landscape. It emphasized that its&nbsp;guidance&nbsp;does not account for additional future tariffs and may be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">revised if material changes occur</a>.

Williams-Sonoma expects fiscal 2025 net revenue to range between&nbsp;-1.5%&nbsp;and&nbsp;+1.5%, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">comparable sales flat to up&nbsp;3.0%</a>.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Steven Shemesh lowered the price forecast to $182 from $189 while keeping an Outperform rating.
While first-quarter comps and headline operating margin outperformed expectations, investor concerns centered around the roughly 220 basis point headwind in merchandising gross margin, Shemesh noted.
Shemesh views much of this impact as temporary and expects improvement beginning in the second quarter. Consequently, the analyst revised the second quarter comp estimate to +1.2% (from -1.5%) and raised the adjusted EPS forecast to $1.81 from $1.74.
For 2025 and 2026, the analyst now projects comp sales growth of +1.1% and +2.6%, respectively (vs. +0.1% and +4.6% previously), and adjusted EPS of $8.33 and $9.10 (vs. $8.36 and $9.46 prior).
KeyBanc analyst Bradley B. Thomas reiterated an Overweight rating with a price forecast of $181.
The analyst says despite a challenging industry environment, the company delivered solid first-quarter results, with comparable sales and earnings per share surpassing expectations.
The analyst remains positive on Williams-Sonoma&#8217;s long-term outlook, driven by ongoing market share gains, a robust balance sheet, and sustainably elevated margins.
The analyst asserts that the company is well-positioned for an eventual housing recovery, with a potential over 50% upside in its shares within the next two to three years.
Thomas now estimates EPS of $1.71 (vs. $1.73 prior) for the second quarter, $1.87 (vs. $1.83 earlier) for the third quarter, and $3.02 (vs. $2.96 prior) for the fourth quarter of 2025.
Also, the analyst raised full-year 2025 EPS estimates to $8.44 (from $8.20) and 2026 EPS estimate to $8.75 (from $8.40).
Telsey Advisory analyst Cristina Fernández maintained an Outperform rating with a price forecast of $215.
The analyst views Williams-Sonoma&#8217;s quarterly performance as solid. However, year-over-year comparisons for gross and operating margins appear weaker due to a one-time adjustment in the first quarter of 2024.
Guggenheim Securities analyst Steven Forbes kept a Neutral rating and writes that while the company&#8217;s ~75 bps gross margin miss in the first quarter drew investor focus, the return to positive furniture comps (first since fourth-quarter 2022) is notable.
The analyst notes that all brands posted positive one-year comps for the first time since the second quarter of 2022, and multi-year comp trends improved across key banners. Forbes says this supports management&#8217;s outlook to return to top-line growth in 2025.
Having now accounted for the pressure from tariff-related margin headwinds, the analyst, by and large, is sticking to previous estimates.
Price Action: WSM shares are trading lower by 1.16% to $158.53&nbsp;at last check Friday.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Dogecoin Turn Red As Tariffs Threat Returns

Merus N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRUS#NASDAQ">MRUS</a>) shares are trading higher Friday after the company reported promising interim results from its ongoing phase 2 trial evaluating petosemtamab in combination with pembrolizumab for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45576972/merus-petosemtamab-with-pembrolizumab-interim-data-demonstrates-robust-efficacy-and-durability-in-">head and neck cancer.</a>
What To Know: The data, which will be formally presented at the 2025 ASCO Annual Meeting, showed a 63% overall response rate and a 79% 12-month overall survival rate among 43 evaluable patients with PD-L1+ recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
The trial also reported a median progression-free survival of nine months, with six patients achieving complete responses and 21 showing partial responses. Importantly, no significant overlapping toxicities were observed in the treatment combination, which was generally well tolerated. Merus noted that 14 responders remained on therapy at the time of the Feb. 27 2025 data cutoff.
Analysts Weigh In: Needham raised its price target on Merus from $75 to $88, stating the updated data meaningfully de-risk the ongoing phase 3 trials. BMO Capital also raised its target from $96 to $110.
Topline data from one or both of the ongoing phase 3 studies are expected in 2026.

Merus Stock Surges Over 35% On Strong Phase 2 Cancer Trial Results: What's Going On?

Wall Street analysts rerated Analog Devices, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADI#NASDAQ">ADI</a>) after reporting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45564073/analog-devices-cfo-confirms-cyclical-upturn-sees-continued-growth" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal second-quarter</a>&nbsp;results on Thursday.
The company&#8217;s quarterly revenue increased 22% to $2.64 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $2.51 billion. Adjusted EPS of $1.85 beat the&nbsp;analyst consensus estimate&nbsp;of $1.70.
Analog Devices expects fiscal third-quarter 2025 revenue of $2.65 billion-$2.85 billion, above the&nbsp;analyst consensus estimate&nbsp;of $2.62 billion. The company projects adjusted EPS of $1.82-$2.02 against the analyst consensus estimate of $1.83.

Cantor Fitzgerald: Similar to Analog peers, Analog Devices offered a solid beat and raise. Prisco noted a cyclical recovery in Industrials coupled with cyclical and idiosyncratic growth elsewhere.
Within Industrials, all sub-segments and geographies grew quarter over quarter. Factory Automation and the Broad-Based sub-segments also recovered.
Overall, book-to-bill was > 1.0, inventory downstream remains lean, and the company is bullish about the current cyclical upturn. Prisco noted some pull-ins that helped the April quarter, with no benefit likely in July. Industrials are still 10-15% below the trend line. A step up in operating expenditure related to variable compensation is weighing on the operating margin outlook into July. Still, there was a return to ~70% gross margins in the quarter.
Benchmark: Williams noted that Analog Devices&#8217; quarterly results and outlook were much better than the stock reaction suggested, with shares down over 4% on the day despite the healthy beat and raise. 
The analyst said the cyclical recovery continued gaining momentum, with bookings, backlog, and demand trends improving across all segments and geographies. Commentary around the automotive pull-ins spooked investors, although the company was obvious that order patterns have since normalized. 
Williams noted that the most encouraging takeaway from the report is the meaningful improvement from the industrial end market, where bookings and revenue grew across all subsegments. Industrial has been a mixed bag throughout the earnings season. 
Still, the results point to positive trends that should translate into better performance for the semi-group in the June quarter, per the analyst.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Needham: Bolton noted that Analog Devices reported results and guidance that easily exceeded Street&#8217;s expectations, which were driven by strength across most end markets. 
As per Bolton, auto grew +16% Q/Q, which came in much stronger than anticipated on tariff pull-ins in North America and Europe. He stated that Industrial increased +8% Q/Q in the quarter and is expected to grow another +10% Q/Q in the third quarter, driven by broad-based strength demonstrating early signs of a cyclical recovery. 
Bolton remarked that the operating margin will soon be under pressure due to higher variable compensation and increased salary expenses.
JPMorgan: Sur noted that Analog Devices delivered better quarterly results, driven by continued cyclical recovery trends and some customer demand pull-forward in their auto business.
However, the analyst noted that automotive revenue is expected to decline due to the headwind from the quarter&#8217;s demand pull forward. The industrial inventory correction is now complete, and the company will be shipping to end demand in the July quarter.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The team has multiple company-specific growth drivers, such as the AI-related markets, which can grow 20%- 25% Y/Y in fiscal 2025, and aerospace and defense strength, which is tracking to $1 billion in annualized revenues for the July quarter, Sur stated. 
Regarding tariffs, Analog Devices saw an acceleration in automotive sell-through and orders. Both the Americas and Europe automotive sectors are up 20% Q/Q following the announcement of the 25% auto tariff. However, the company saw no signs of demand pull-forward in other business segments.
Analog Devices is the first broad-based analog or microcontroller company to highlight customer demand pull-forward. Sur says this could likely weigh on second-half seasonal trends.
The first-half view is solid, though the analyst expected a weaker macro demand environment and sub-seasonal second-half trends.
Price Action:&nbsp;ADI stock is trading lower by 0.75% to $210.35 at last check Friday.

Analog Devices Powers Past Estimates, But Shares Cool As Q2 Beat Masks Margin Pressure

Shares of ASP Isotopes Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASPI#NASDAQ">ASPI</a>) surged 14.4% to $8.92 Friday afternoon after the company announced a strategic financing <a href="https://ir.aspisotopes.com/sec-filings/all-sec-filings/content/0001477932-25-004124/0001477932-25-004124.pdf">agreement</a> with nuclear technology firm TerraPower and amid broader investor enthusiasm for nuclear energy stocks.
What To Know: On May 19, ASP Isotopes secured a loan commitment of up to $22 million from TerraPower to partially fund construction of a uranium enrichment facility in South Africa.
The plant, located at Pelindaba, will produce High Assay Low-Enriched Uranium, a critical fuel for next-generation reactors. ASP and TerraPower also inked supply agreements potentially worth over $4 billion through 2037.
