&#8220;We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension. If that were to occur, we would consider how far the economy is from each goal, and the potentially different time horizons over which those respective gaps would be anticipated to close,&#8221; said Powell.
U.S. export restrictions on Nvidia Corp.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) <a href="https://benzinga.com/25/04/44844084/nvidias-h20-chip-ban-could-lead-to-manageable-sales-drop-bank-of-america-says">H20 GPUs</a> pulled the stock market down on Wednesday.
The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.32% and the two-year bond was at 3.82%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing an 86.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Wednesday, driven by a significant sell-off in the semiconductor sector and broader tech weakness.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) experienced a steep decline, with Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) both falling approximately 7% following new export restrictions on Nvidia chips to China.
This news heavily impacted the information technology sector, which, along with consumer discretionary and communication services, recorded the largest losses. In contrast, energy stocks defied the overall downward trend, closing higher.
Among individual companies, Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) reported better-than-expected first-quarter results, and Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABT#NYSE">ABT</a>) posted upbeat first-quarter adjusted EPS.
On the economic front, U.S. industrial production fell by 0.3% in March, slightly more than anticipated. However, U.S. retail sales surged 1.4% month-over-month in March, exceeding both the previous month&#8217;s gain and market expectations.

According to Scott Wren, the senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo, &#8220;current equity levels offer an attractive entry opportunity even with the bounce higher off the recent lows.&#8221;
Wren further emphasized the importance of having a &#8220;plan of action or at least be happy with where you currently stand,&#8221; regardless of individual perspectives on the implemented tariffs.
&#8220;Over the course of the last couple of weeks, we have seen the administration go from an aggressive reciprocal tariff strategy that involved meaningful universal tariffs on virtually all of our trading partners to a pause that suspends most reciprocal tariffs but leaves a 145% levy on imports from China,&#8221; Wren notes.
Despite the tariff uncertainty, Wren&#8217;s firm maintains a view that the U.S. economy was already heading for a slowdown in the first half of the year, even before the current trade strategies were implemented. &#8220;From our perspective, even before the current tariff strategies were deployed, our analysis suggested the economy was going to hit a bump in the road and slow in the first half of this year. That line of thought is still intact,&#8221; Wren states.
Wren also suggests a strategic shift in fixed income, advising investors to &#8220;move money from bonds, specifically the intermediate portion of the yield curve, into mid-cap U.S. equities in an effort to take advantage of the fall in stocks and the rally in bond prices (yields fell).&#8221;
Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44858165/policy-push-vs-market-pull-dollar-under-pressure-as-reserve-currency-may-be-called-into-question-amid-tariff-turmoil">U.S. dollar is facing pressure</a>, with its &#8220;reserve currency&#8221; status. A recent study titled &#8216;Dollar Upheaval: This Time is Different&#8217; noted a 3.6% depreciation between April 4th and 14th, an unusual move as the dollar typically gains during global volatility.
This suggests a break from traditional market behavior, raising concerns that U.S. Treasuries lose their safe-haven appeal.
"If U.S. Treasuries are no longer viewed as the world's preferred safe asset, then the status of the dollar as the world's reserve currency may be called into question,&#8221; stated the note.
Investors are now <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/treasuries/25/04/44857989/gold-nears-3400-mark-experts-point-to-likely-correction-amid-bull-market-rates-will-drop-like-rock">flocking to Gold</a>, which has been hitting fresh highs as it trades above $3,300 per ounce. According to data shared by Charlie Bilello of Creative Planning, the inflation-adjusted gold prices were back at an all-time high, after 45 years, surpassing the prior peak from 1980.

Other chipmakers also felt the heat. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) dropped 6% as its MI308 chips fall under the new licensing requirements.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) sank 3.4%, extending the sector&#8217;s losses. Adding to the drag, Dutch chip equipment giant ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) missed quarterly revenue estimates, sending its shares down 5%.
On the macro front, March retail sales surprised to the upside, rising 1.4% month-over-month — topping forecasts of 1.3% and marking the strongest monthly <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44837237/march-retail-sales-post-highest-surge-in-over-two-years-as-us-consumers-anticipate-tariff-jitters">gain since January 2023.</a>
Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar saw renewed selling pressure, with the dollar index dipping back below 100. Treasury yields were little changed, with the 10-year yield holding steady near 4.33%.
Gold continued its stellar run, surging 2.5% to a fresh record high of $3,320 per ounce as demand for safe-haven assets remains robust.
In commodities, oil prices rebounded sharply, with WTI crude climbing 2% to $62 a barrel. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) also edged up 1.3% to around $84,500.
All eyes are now on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, who is set to speak at the Economic Club of Chicago later this afternoon.

Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) shares were trading higher in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/b44834069/travelers-reports-first-quarter-net-income-of-395-million-and-core-income-of-443-million" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the premarket session on Wednesday</a> as sales of $11.81 billion (+5% year over year) outpaced the analyst consensus estimate of $10.81 billion.
The company reported&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.91, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the street view of&nbsp;$0.80</a>.
Due to higher catastrophe losses, core income decreased 60% Y/Y to $443 million.

In particular, the company witnessed catastrophe losses of $2.266 billion pre-tax, owing to the California wildfires in January 2025.
Net realized investment losses stood at $61 million pre-tax ($48 million after-tax), compared to gains of $35 million pre-tax ($27 million after-tax) in the prior year quarter.
Net written premiums rose 3% Y/Y&nbsp;to&nbsp;$10.515 billion&nbsp;in the quarter under review.
In particular, Business Insurance net written premiums rose 2% Y/Y to a record $5.7 billion, despite a 4-point drag from the enhanced casualty reinsurance program booked upfront.
Bond &amp; Specialty Insurance segment net premiums growth of 6% Y/Y to $1.0 billion, driven by 89% retention in management liability and 13% growth in the surety segment.
Personal Insurance segment net premiums grew 5% Y/Y to $3.8 billion, supported by solid renewal premium growth, especially in Homeowners.
Net investment income increased 10% Y/Y pre-tax in the quarter. Adjusted book value per share by 11% Y/Y to $138.99 in the quarter.
Buyback: The company repurchased 1.4&nbsp;million shares during the&nbsp;quarter&nbsp;at an average price of&nbsp;$252.68&nbsp;per share for a total cost of&nbsp;$358&nbsp;million.&nbsp;
As of March 31, 2025, the company had $4.790 billion of capacity under its share repurchase authorizations.
Dividend: The company declared a regular quarterly dividend increase of 5% to&nbsp;$1.10 per share.
The dividend is payable on June 30, 2025, to shareholders of record at the close of business on June 10, 2025.

Travelers Companies shares are trading higher after the company reported better-than-expected Q1 financial results and raised its quarterly dividend from $1.05 to $1.10 per share.

The Board of Directors declared a 5% increase in the regular quarterly dividend to $1.10 per share. The dividend is payable June 30, 2025, to shareholders of record at the close of business on June 10, 2025.

Travelers Companies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.91 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.80 by 138.75 percent. This is a 59.28 percent decrease over earnings of $4.69 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $11.81 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $10.81 billion by 9.25 percent. This is a 5.18 percent increase over sales of $11.23 billion the same period last year.

U.S. stock futures declined on Wednesday following a muted day of trading on Tuesday. Futures of major benchmark indices were lower in premarket.
The Donald Trump administration levied a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44831287/trump-administration-imposes-up-to-245-tariff-on-chinese-imports-amid-intensifying-trade-battle"> 245% tariff on China</a> late Tuesday. &#8220;China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions,&#8221; stated a White House fact sheet.
Meanwhile, the new U.S. export restrictions halting the shipments of Nvidia Corp.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>)<a href="https://benzinga.com/25/04/44830406/nvidia-to-take-55-billion-hit-over-china-chip-export-restrictions-but-top-analyst-dan-ives-says-hes-not-overly-concerned-all-part-of-the-high-game-of-poker"> H20 graphics processing units to China</a> were announced. The announcement comes after the U.S. government informed the company on April 9 that it would now require a license to export those chips.
The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.31% and the two-year bond was at 3.81%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool&#8217;s </a>projections show markets pricing a 79.9% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

The SPY was down 0.67% to $534.02, while the QQQ declined 1.27% to $452.17, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From Last Session:
Weighing on U.S. stocks Tuesday, the consumer discretionary, health care, and consumer staples sectors saw the biggest declines.
Bucking the trend, however, information technology and real estate stocks closed higher.
The market moves came as Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>) and Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, while economic data showed a rise in the NY Empire State Manufacturing Index and flat export prices alongside a slight drop in import prices for March.
The Dow closed Tuesday 10.44% below its 52-week peak of 45,073.63. The S&amp;P 500 ended 12.21% off its 6,147.43 high, and the Nasdaq 100 was 15.27% below its 22,222.61 record.

Insights From Analysts:
According to Mona Mahajan of Edward Jones, the stock valuations were not stretched anymore. &#8220;While market returns have been negative this year, the upside is that valuations are now looking more compelling and are no longer stretched, which was a concern coming into this year.&#8221;
She highlighted that all major indexes were trading at or below their 10-year historical forward price-to-earnings multiples, potentially setting the stage for improved long-term returns.
The S&amp;P 500 forward multiple was around 18 times next year&#8217;s earnings forecast, down from a recent high of 22.7 times, while the Nasdaq forward multiple was about 21 times, down from its recent high of 30 times.
&#8220;In our view, the spike in volatility, a reset in valuations, and signs that the worst-case scenario in the trade war appears to be averted suggest that stocks may find some support and try to carve out a bottom. Risks have risen, but a recession is not inevitable in our view, and stocks appear to have already priced in a significant degree of bad outcomes,&#8221; she added.
Jason Goepfert of White Oak Consultancy LLC noted a historical pattern: whenever the VIX fear index drops from above 50 to the 30 level, the S&amp;P 500 has historically achieved 100% positive gains by year-end.
However, he points out that in the most recent such cycle in May 2020, the S&amp;P 500&#8217;s return after a year was 42.96%. Goepfert&#8217;s analysis of similar cycles in 2009, 2002, and 1988 also reveals a short-term median loss of 0.7% for the S&amp;P 500 in the week following the VIX&#8217;s drop to 30.
