Earnings and speeches by Federal Reserve officials could set the tempo for Friday&#8217;s session. China&#8217;s third-quarter GDP rose slightly more than estimates, allaying the fears of traders. Gold continues to make record after record, while oil continues to have a volatile ride amid geopolitical tensions.

U.S. stocks closed narrowly mixed as traders digested a batch of mixed economic data as well as a flurry of earnings. After opening higher, the major indices experienced some volatility in the morning, although holding mostly above the unchanged line. 
Stocks gave back most of their gains in late afternoon trading before finishing on a mixed note. 
The Dow Industrials closed at fresh intraday and closing highs, thanks to a positive reaction to Travelers Companies, Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) earnings, while the S&amp;P 500 Index hit an intraday high before squandering all the gains and closing marginally lower.

Insights From Analysts:
After separate reports showed strong September retail sales growth, jobless claims, which fell after Hurricane Helene&#8217;s impact wore off, and a decline in industrial production amid the Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) strike, Comerica Chief Economist Bill Adams said, &#8220;The economy is in pretty good shape.&#8221; &#8220;Since consumer spending fuels two-thirds of U.S. demand, the economy can't be doing too bad as long as consumers still have their pocketbooks open,&#8221; he said.
The economist expects the Hurricanes that devastated swathes of the Southeast in late September and early October to be a big drag on releases for October.&nbsp;This will make it difficult to read the underlying trend accurately, he said.
Calling the headwinds temporary, Adams said, &#8220;With the Fed expected to continue lowering interest rates through the turn of the year, credit-sensitive sectors of the economy should perk up in coming quarters, sustaining the economic expansion into 2025.&#8221;

US Stocks Set To End Week Strong As Netflix Q3 Earnings Boost Optimism, Gold Hits New Highs: What's Driving Sentiment Friday?

What Happened: The impact of Hurricane Helene has led to a substantial increase in Allstate&#8217;s losses for the third quarter of 2024 which the company reported as $1.7 billion, up from $1.18 billion in the same quarter in 2023. 
Other insurance companies affected by the recent hurricanes include Progressive Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PGR#NYSE">PGR</a>), which <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/g41329804/progressive-reports-september-2024-results">recorded</a> $563 million in catastrophe in September as a result of Hurricane Helene. Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) reported catastrophe losses of $939 million for the third quarter of 2024 due to Hurricane Helene, an increase of $89 million compared to the same period last year.

According to <a href="https://www.insurtechinsights.com/hurricanes-helene-and-milton-floridas-insurance-market-on-the-brink/">a report</a> from Insurtech Insights, Hurricanes Helene and Milton contributed to total losses for Florida insurers of more than $100 billion for the fifth consecutive year, comparable to the losses from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.&nbsp;
Why It Matters: Citizens, Florida's state-backed insurer of last resort, has seen a surge in policyholders in recent years, especially after recent destructive hurricanes. 
The rapid influx raises serious concerns about its financial stability as it has experienced massive underwriting losses, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Citizens estimates it is currently at a 38% rate inadequate, meaning it needs a 38% rate increase to be solvent. However, Florida law caps its annual rate increases at 10%
Citizens is transferring more than 648,000 policies to private insurers, per<a href="https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2024/10/04/what-citizens-insurance-depopulation-means-for-florida-homeowners/"> Click Orlando</a>. A semiconductor rally pushed the S&amp;P 500 to new all-time highs on Thursday, with strong earnings from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) boosting tech sentiment after a weak report from ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/technicals/24/10/41383732/stock-of-the-day-taiwan-semiconductor-breaks-out-as-buyers-push-prices-higher">earlier in the week.</a>
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) jumped 2.3%, leading sector gains. NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) hit fresh record highs, reaching $141 per share during the morning session.
The Nasdaq 100 outperformed major indices, while small caps underperformed as the Russell 2000 faced resistance at a key technical level. The Dow briefly touched a record high of 43,289 points before pulling back slightly.
On the macro front, September retail sales exceeded expectations, and jobless claims fell last week, reinforcing views of strong economic resilience. However, this also slightly hit hopes for Fed rate cuts as economists voiced doubts about the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/10/41386234/strong-september-retail-sales-put-feds-next-move-in-doubt-interest-rate-cuts-are-">need for further easing in November.</a>
The U.S. dollar strengthened, with the dollar index (DXY) climbing to levels last seen in early August. The euro fell 0.4% as the European Central Bank cut interest rates amid weak economic data and ongoing disinflation.
Gold prices, tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), rose 0.5%, setting new records despite rising Treasury yields. The 10-year Treasury yield gained 8 basis points to 4.10%, while the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) slid 1.6%, marking its worst session since early August.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) eased 0.4%, taking a breather after four consecutive sessions of gains.

The Travelers Companies reported third-quarter revenue growth of 12% year-over-year to $11.904 billion, beating the consensus of $11.491 billion. Core income per share jumped 169% to $5.24, beating the $3.64 consensus estimate.
Travelers gained 6.9% to $259.63 on Thursday.

Travelers Posts Upbeat Results, Joins Iridium Communications, Snap-on And Other Big Stocks Moving Higher On Thursday

The Travelers Companies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) shares are trading higher premarket on Thursday after the company reported&nbsp;third-quarter revenue growth of&nbsp;12%&nbsp;year-over-year to&nbsp;$11.904 billion,&nbsp;beating the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/b41376631/travelers-reports-excellent-third-quarter-and-year-to-date-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of&nbsp;$11.491 billion</a>.
Core income per share jumped 169% to $5.24, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">$3.64 consensus estimate</a>.
Core income increased mainly due to improved underwriting gains, better reserve development, and higher net investment income, partially offset by higher catastrophe losses.
For the&nbsp;third quarter, net written premiums increased by&nbsp;8%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$11.3 billion. In Business Insurance, net written premiums rose&nbsp;9% to $5.5 billion, with a&nbsp;10.5%&nbsp;increase in renewal premiums and&nbsp;86%&nbsp;retention.
Bond &amp; Specialty Insurance premiums grew&nbsp;7%&nbsp;to over&nbsp;$1.1 billion, featuring&nbsp;90%&nbsp;retention in management liability and a&nbsp;7%&nbsp;increase in surety premiums. Personal Insurance saw a&nbsp;7%&nbsp;boost in net written premiums, driven by&nbsp;6%&nbsp;growth in Auto and&nbsp;9%&nbsp;in Homeowners and Other.
Net realized investment gains stood at&nbsp;$55&nbsp;million&nbsp;pre-tax ($42&nbsp;million&nbsp;after-tax) vs. net realized investment losses of $65 million&nbsp;pre-tax ($50&nbsp;million&nbsp;after-tax) in the same quarter last year.
Quarterly net investment income increased&nbsp;18%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$904&nbsp;million pre-tax ($742&nbsp;million&nbsp;after-tax). Income from the fixed-income investment portfolio rose Y/Y, led by a higher average yield and growth in fixed-maturity investments.
Dividend: The Board declared a quarterly dividend per share of&nbsp;$1.05, payable on December 31, 2024, to shareholders of record as of December 10, 2024.
Alan Schnitzer, chairman and chief executive officer, said, &#8220;These results, along with our strong balance sheet, enabled us to return $496 million of excess capital to our shareholders this quarter, including $253 million of share repurchases.&#8221;
