This was the highest print since February 2023 and a clear sign that inflationary pressures are not easing as anticipated.
By midday, all major stock indices were trading lower. The Nasdaq 100 was hit particularly hard as rising Treasury yields soured risk sentiment, putting pressure on growth-oriented technology stocks. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond surged by 6 basis points to 4.91%, its highest level since November 2023, reflecting growing unease in the bond market.

In a report released Tuesday, the Institute for Supply Management revealed that the Services PMI rose to 54.1% in December 2024, beating economist forecasts of 53.3% and marking a robust two-point gain from November&#8217;s 52.1%.
The data underscores the sector's ongoing expansion, now at six consecutive months, with December's reading representing the third-highest level of the year.
Steve Miller, chair of the ISM Services Business Survey Committee, said, "Nine industries reported growth in December, five fewer than the previous month's total. The Services PMI has expanded in 22 of the last 24 months dating back to January 2023."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's Driving US Services Sector Growth?</h3>
The uptick in the Services PMI was primarily fueled by business activity and supplier deliveries. ISM&#8217;s Business Activity Index climbed to 58.2 in December from 53.7 in November, signaling heightened end-of-year activity. 
New orders also rose, with the corresponding index climbing to 54.2 from 53.7. 
Yet, employment growth was flat, with the Employment Index holding steady at 51.4—indicating modest hiring across the sector.

Despite the optimism, a sharp rise in the Prices Index has raised concerns about inflationary pressures within the services sector. 
The index jumped to 64.4 in December from 58.2 in November, far exceeding consensus expectations of 57.5. Panelists cited input cost inflation, labor constraints, and tariff-related uncertainties as key drivers of price increases.
One of the more striking themes in the latest ISM survey was the emergence of tariff concerns as a key risk for businesses heading into 2025. 
While specifics remain uncertain, companies are preparing for potential trade policy changes as the Trump administration is set to impose new tariffs within weeks. 
Miller highlighted that "tariff concerns elicited the most panelist comments," suggesting businesses are bracing for possible supply chain disruptions or cost escalations.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Labor Market Data Remains Strong</h3>
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey data for November on Tuesday.
Job openings rose by 259,000 to 8.1 million, exceeding market expectations of 7.7 million. Vacancies were up for professional and business services by 273,000, finance and insurance by 105,000, and private educational services by 38,000. 
The number of job quits declined to 3.07 million, the lowest since August 2020. The data suggests that while businesses are actively hiring, worker sentiment remains cautious amid rising economic uncertainties.

After much of 2024 marked by contraction, there are now brighter signs emerging from the tunnel of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">the U.S. manufacturing sector. </a>
Data revealed Friday from the Institute for Supply Management showed that the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 49.3% in December, up from 48.4% in November and surpassing economists&#8217; expectations of 48.4%. 
The outcome marks the strongest reading since April 2024 and second consecutive month of improvement in the PMI, a trend not seen since September 2023. 
However, the index remains below the critical 50% threshold that separates expansion from contraction, reflecting the ninth consecutive month — and the 26 out of the last 27 — in contraction territory.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Key Manufacturing Metrics Show Encouraging Trends</h1>
While the headline PMI remains in contraction, some sub-indices suggest that momentum may be turning:

<li>New Orders Index: Climbed to 52.5% in December, up from 50.4% in November. This is the second straight month in expansion territory after seven months of contraction.</li>
<li>Production Index: Jumped to 50.3%, up significantly from November's 46.8%, marking its return to expansion after six months of contraction.</li>
<li>Prices Index: Rose from 50.3% in November to 52.5%, indicating increasing prices paid by manufacturers.</li>
<li>Backlog of Orders Index: Improved from 41.8% in November to 45.9%, though still below 50%.</li>
<li>Employment Index: Fell to 45.3% from November's 48.1%, reflecting continued de-staffing in the sector.</li>
</ul>
&#8220;U.S. manufacturing activity contracted again in December, but at a slower rate compared to November. Demand showed signs of improving, while output stabilized and inputs stayed accommodative,&#8221; Timothy Fiore, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, wrote in the report.
Fiore also highlighted that de-staffing trends may soon end, and the percentage of gross domestic product contracting in manufacturing has decreased from 66% in November to 52% in December — a sign that the slowdown is becoming less broad-based.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h1>
The U.S. dollar rebounded against major currencies, supported by the improving economic data. The Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), a proxy for dollar strength, trimmed its session losses to 0.1%.
The greenback has now rallied 9% since late September, significantly outperforming the broader stock market, which is up only 3% during the same period. 
The S&amp;P 500 — as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — initially rose but gave back gains, weighed down by higher Treasury yields.

US Manufacturing Activity Tops Expectations In December, Rises To 9-Month Highs

Investors dumped a popular long-dated Treasury ETF at a record pace in December, fleeing the bond market as surging yields and fiscal uncertainty cast a shadow ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's return <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">to the White House.</a>
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>), the largest Treasury-focused exchange-traded fund with $50 billion in assets under management, recorded $5.5 billion in outflows last month. 
This marks the fund's largest single-month outflows in its history, surpassing the $4 billion withdrawn during the pandemic-driven turmoil in March 2020.
On the performance front, the fund tumbled by 7.1% in December, recording the worst drop since September 2023.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Yields Soar As Trump Policies Ignite Inflation Risks</h3>
Yields on 30-year Treasury bonds climbed sharply, gaining more than 40 basis points in December to close the year at 4.80%. That's the highest level in over a year, driven by concerns about rising inflation and shifting monetary policy.
The Federal Reserve, which delivered a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in December, sounded hawkish in its accompanying guidance.
Officials signaled fewer rate cuts in 2025 than markets had expected and raised inflation forecasts to reflect upcoming administration policies.
&#8220;The&nbsp;Bond&nbsp;Vigilantes are sending a loud warning message,&#8221; said Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, in a recent note. 
&#8220;They aren&#8217;t convinced Donald Trump, the new sheriff coming to town, will maintain fiscal law and order any better than the old sheriff. They are also losing their confidence in Jerome Powell, the deputy in charge of monetary law and order,&#8221; he added.
In a recent report, Bravos Research highlighted that&nbsp;the 10-year&nbsp;Treasury&nbsp;yield&nbsp;rocketed from 3.6% in September to 4.6% in late December, implying a 25% increase in just 100 trading sessions.
&#8220;Moves like this are rare and have massive implications for the stock market,&#8221; the Bravos Research Team wrote. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump's Policies Add To Market Jitters</h3>
Investor anxiety over Trump's incoming administration added another layer of complexity to the bond market.
Trump has floated the idea of scrapping the federal debt ceiling, a controversial move that could enable unchecked government borrowing and stoke inflationary pressures.
Such a policy would effectively remove a key restraint on federal deficits, raising alarm among bond investors already bracing for fiscal expansion.
"There's now more bad reasons for the rise in yields," Yardeni stated. 
As the expert highlighted, while stronger-than-expected economic data in the second half of 2024 initially pushed bond yields higher, the recent decline in the Citigroup Economic Surprise Index has shifted focus to structural concerns, such as persistent inflation risks and growing deficits.
Investors are also bracing for potential trade turbulence, as Trump has pledged to impose a universal 10% tariff and hike tariffs on Chinese imports to 60%. These measures, if enacted, could exacerbate inflationary pressures and add fuel to the bond market&#8217;s recent turmoil.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Treasury Department Breach Highlights New Risks</h3>
Compounding the challenges in December, the U.S. Treasury Department confirmed it was the target of a Chinese state-sponsored cyberattack. 
Hackers compromised a third-party vendor, BeyondTrust, and gained access to unclassified documents, according to a <a href="https://legacy.www.documentcloud.org/documents/25472740-letter-to-chairman-brown-and-ranking-member-scott/">letter</a> sent to lawmakers.
The major breach allowed hackers to override security protocols and access Treasury workstations via a stolen key. 
The Treasury Department said it became aware of the attack on Dec. 8 and is working with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to assess the damage.

Investors Dump Long-Dated Treasury ETF At Record Pace Ahead Of Trump's White House Return

Risk sentiment returned to Wall Street on Friday, revitalized by softer-than-expected November inflation data leading to a strong market rebound following the selloff triggered by the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42615908/feds-preferred-inflation-gauge-falls-more-than-expected-markets-breathe-sigh-of-relief">Federal Reserve&#8217;s recent meeting.</a>
The Personal Consumption Expenditure price index rose 2.4% year-over-year in November, falling short of the 2.5% increase forecasted. The core PCE, a key gauge closely watched by the Fed, also missed expectations, rising 2.8% compared to the anticipated 2.9%.
By midday Friday, all major indices were in rally mode, with broad-based gains across sectors. In the S&amp;P 500, 480 companies traded higher, and every sector advanced as investors welcomed the reprieve in inflationary pressures.
The real estate sector led the charge, rebounding sharply after being hit hardest in the aftermath of the Fed meeting. Small-cap stocks in the Russell 2000 also posted robust gains, powered by a strong recovery in regional banks.
The travel industry soared, driven by upbeat earnings and optimistic guidance from Carnival Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>), which fueled enthusiasm across the sector. The cruise line rose by 6%, eyeing the highest close since October 2021. 
In the bond market, yields dropped by approximately 5 basis points across the curve, boosting Treasury prices. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) gained nearly 1%, recovering some ground after a 3% slide over the previous two sessions. The dollar softened, declining 0.6%, while gold gained over 1%. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) attracted dip buyers after plunging to $92,118. Although the cryptocurrency pared its daily losses, it remains on track for its worst weekly performance in four months.

Wall Street Rallies On Soft Inflation Data, Bonds Rebound, Travel Stocks Surge: What's Driving Markets Friday?

Markets saw a brief reprieve Friday as the Federal Reserve&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge came in below expectations, tempering concerns of mounting volatility after this <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42615908/feds-preferred-inflation-gauge-falls-more-than-expected-markets-breathe-sigh-of-relief">week's hawkish policy pivot.</a>
The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index rose 2.4% year-over-year in November, missing the 2.5% forecast. On a monthly basis, the gauge slowed to 0.1%, down from 0.2% in October and below projections for steady growth.
Core PCE, which excludes food and energy, remained at 2.8% annually, slightly under the 2.9% estimate. The monthly core reading also decelerated to 0.1% from 0.3%, undershooting the 0.2% forecast.
Even with Friday's softer inflation print, traders seemed hesitant to enter a buy-everything mode after the sharp volatility seen earlier this week. 
The slightly tempered reaction suggests a degree of caution remains entrenched among investors as they assess the Fed's hawkish tone.
New York Fed President John Williams, interviewed by CNBC, reiterated that &#8220;monetary policy continues to be restrictive.&#8221; 
Williams described the recent inflation data as &#8220;encouraging news,&#8221; highlighting further disinflation progress. Yet, he indicated that &#8220;we&#8217;re still not to our 2% goal&#8221; and reaffirmed the Fed's commitment to achieving that target.
&#8220;I think the economy is a good place and most importantly for me, monetary policy is well positioned,&#8221; he added.

U.S. equity markets saw modest gains following November&#8217;s softer-than-expected inflation data, as investor caution lingered after the Federal Reserve's hawkish policy shift earlier this week.

US Stocks Edge Up, Micron Suffers Worst Day Since March 2020, Bond Yields Surge: What's Driving Thursday's  Markets?

President-elect Donald Trump stirred the pot on Thursday by advocating for the outright removal of the U.S. debt ceiling, a move that sent shockwaves through the bond market and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">tempered Wall Street gains.</a>
Trump's remarks came as Congress scrambled to pass a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown just days before the deadline.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump didn't mince words, calling the debt ceiling "a meaningless concept" and advocating for its elimination. 
"The Democrats have said they want to get rid of it. If they want to get rid of it, I would lead the charge," Trump told NBC News.
According to Trump, the statutory limit on how much the U.S. government can borrow to meet its financial obligations &#8220;doesn't mean anything, except psychologically,&#8221; and getting rid of it would be the "smartest thing [Congress] could do.&#8221;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How Could US Congress Get Rid Of The Debt Ceiling?</h3>
To abolish the debt ceiling, Congress would need to pass a new law explicitly repealing or replacing the existing statute that sets borrowing limits. This requires a simple majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. 
In the House, that typically means 218 votes out of 435 members, assuming all members vote. In the Senate, where there are 100 seats, it takes 51 votes to pass a bill—or 50 votes plus the Vice President's tie-breaking vote if the chamber is evenly divided.
Yet, the Senate's infamous filibuster rule complicates things. Without using the budget reconciliation process (a special mechanism reserved for fiscal matters), a bill to eliminate the debt ceiling would need 60 votes in the Senate to overcome a filibuster.
Once the bill passes through Congress, it needs presidential approval to become law. 
Should the President veto it –&nbsp;a situation highly unlikely according to what Trump revealed – Congress would face an even steeper challenge: overriding the veto would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers, or 290 votes in the House and 67 votes in the Senate.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Goldman Sachs: Shutdown Unlikely To Drag On</h3>
Goldman Sachs economist Alec Philips highlighted that a government shutdown, while disruptive, is unlikely to persist for long. 
"We estimate that a shutdown would reduce GDP growth in the quarter by 0.15 percentage points for each week it lasted and would boost GDP growth by the same amount in the quarter following government reopening," Philips said.
Yet, Philips also acknowledged that the disruption wouldn't be without its pain points, particularly for federal employees and government contractors, who might bear the brunt of the fallout in real-time.
According to the economist, two potential paths have emerged. 
First, Republicans could tie a debt limit increase to the spending bill set for March 2025, although this would likely require concessions from Democrats, such as a $20 billion annual extension of ACA insurance premium subsidies. 
Alternatively, Republicans may pursue a debt limit suspension through an early 2025 budget reconciliation bill focused on immigration enforcement.
However, the success of these strategies is uncertain, as both approaches hinge on complex political negotiations.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market reactions: Bonds fears spill over to Wall Street</h3>
Long-dated Treasuries, the asset class most sensitive to debt ceiling developments, reacted sharply to the news of Trump's call to eliminate the borrowing cap. Bond investors weren't thrilled, and their response was clear: yields on 30-year Treasury bonds surged 7 basis points to 4.75%, reaching their highest levels since May 2024.
The spike in yields hammered the popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>), which tumbled 1.5%, revisiting its April 2024 lows and flirting with its worst levels in over a year. This selloff reflects growing concerns over the possibility of unchecked government spending, which could fuel larger deficits and inflationary pressures.
Equities didn't escape unscathed either. The broader U.S. stock market lost steam as major indices pared their session gains. 
The S&amp;P 500—tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>)—dropped 0.5%, or 150 points, following the news. 
Investors worried that removing the debt ceiling could stoke inflation and force the Federal Reserve into a more hawkish stance, generating further uncertainty in the path of rate cuts ahead.

Trump Would 'Lead The Charge' To Scrap Debt Ceiling: 30-Year Treasury Bonds Slide To 2024 Lows, Stocks Cut Gains

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 was the only major index to post gains, rising 0.4%. Yet, after briefly climbing to 21,900 points shortly after the market opened, tech stocks lost momentum and retreated by about 0.8%.
Other indices declined, with only a handful of sectors, such as utilities and healthcare, eking out marginal gains — highlighting a broader shift away from risk assets.
The market&#8217;s unease appears tied to diminished expectations for interest rate cuts in 2025, compounded by the possibility of hawkish commentary from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, particularly in light of the latest November&#8217;s inflation reports.
Treasury yields rose for the fifth day in a row, with the benchmark 10-year note climbing to 4.40%, its highest level in three weeks. 
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.9%, hitting a three-week low and marking its fifth consecutive daily decline. For the week, the TLT ETF has lost over 4%, on track for its worst performance since mid-October 2023.
Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar index (DXY) held steady, with the greenback strengthening against the yen for a fifth straight session. Gold prices slipped for the second consecutive day.
In the commodity markets, oil prices rose 1.7%, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude reaching $71 per barrel.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) gained 1.8%, climbing to $101,800 and nearly erasing all of Thursday&#8217;s losses.

Notably, nearly 25% of respondents—the highest proportion since this data series began in 2012—stated that now is a good time to make purchases, anticipating further price increases ahead.
&#8220;A surge in buying conditions for durables led Current Economic Conditions to soar more than 20%. Rather than a sign of strength, this rise in durables was primarily due to a perception that purchasing durables now would enable buyers to avoid future price increases,&#8221; said University of Michigan&#8217;s Surveys of Consumers Director&nbsp;Joanne Hsu.&nbsp;

<li>Preliminary estimates from the University of Michigan showed that the consumer sentiment index rose from 71.8 points in November to 74 points in December, marking a 3.1% monthly surge and surpassing economist estimates, as tracked by TradingEconomics, of 72.</li>
<li>The sub-index for consumer expectations declined from 76.9 to 71.6 points, falling to a 4-month low.</li>
<li>The sub-index for current conditions soared from 63.9 to 77.7, the highest since April. </li>
<li>Year-ahead inflation expectations rose from 2.6% to 2.9%, the highest since July, and above the expected 2.7%. </li>
<li>Long-term inflation expectations fell slightly, from 3.2% to 3.1%, as expected.</li>

&#8220;The expectations index continued the post-election re-calibration that began last month, climbing for Republicans and declining for Democrats in December,&#8221; Hsu wrote in the report.&nbsp;
&#8220;Democrats voiced concerns that anticipated policy changes, particularly tariff hikes, would lead to a resurgence in inflation. Republicans disagreed; they expect the next president will usher in an immense slowdown in inflation,&#8221; she added. &nbsp;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h3>
The U.S. dollar index – tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – rose by 0.3% after the December consumer sentiment report.
Both S&amp;P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 indices were up by 0.4% and 0.7% by 10:15 a.m. in New York, while the Dow Jones held broadly steady. 
Small caps, tracked by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), rose 0.4% higher.
Shorter-dated Treasury yields fell, with the 2-year yield down by 5 basis points. Following the latest jobs market data, investors hiked their rate-cut expectations, now assigning a 90% chance of a 25-basis-point rate ease.

It&#8217;s been a wild ride for long-term Treasury ETFs lately, and it's looking like they might have hit a rough patch. Following months of declining interest rates, yields on U.S. Treasurys reversed course in October, and the charts are now flashing a warning: the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/death-cross">dreaded Death Cross</a> is looming.
For those who aren&#8217;t familiar, the Death Cross occurs when the short-term moving average (such as the 50-day) crosses below the long-term moving average (like the 200-day). 
And that's exactly what's been happening for a trio of heavy hitters in the bond market: iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>), Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VGLT#NASDAQ">VGLT</a>), and US Treasury 30 Year Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UTHY#NASDAQ">UTHY</a>).
The recent surge in long-end yields, after months of decline, has turned this segment of the market into a hotbed of concern. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield, which fell to a low of 3.63% in September, jumped more than 0.80% as the Federal Reserve cut the federal funds target rate in September and November.

Long-Term Treasury ETFs Hit Death Cross As Yields Rise, Bonds Tumble

Risk-on sentiment gained momentum on Wall Street after the Thanksgiving holiday, fueled by investor optimism over fourth-quarter profit forecasts for U.S. corporations, lifting both the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">to fresh record highs.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 broke past the 6,040-point mark on Friday and closed at 6,032, extending its year-to-date gains to an impressive 27%. If the year ended on Friday, the broader U.S. stock market would have surged by a staggering 57% over the last two years, representing the strongest such rally since 1998. 
The Dow Jones also hit a record-high milestone, surging above the 45,000 level and bringing its year-to-date gains to 19%.
Technology stocks outperformed, with the Nasdaq 100 rising 1% on the day, buoyed by gains in the Magnificent Seven mega caps and semiconductor stocks.
Small caps stocks posted more modest gains, as the Russell 2000 index edged up 0.4%.
In the currency market, the U.S. dollar snapped its eight-week winning streak, pressured by a drop against the Japanese yen amid speculation of a possible Bank of Japan interest rate hike.
In the bond market, Treasury yields edged lower by about 5 basis points, with the 10-year yield approaching 4.2%, a level not seen since late October. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rallied 1%, reaching over one-month highs.
Commodities also saw a positive price action. Gold rose 0.8%, marking its fourth consecutive session of gains, and silver jumped 1.4%. Natural gas prices spiked 4.9%, ending the month with a 24% surge. The underperformer was crude, which eased 0.2%.
In cryptocurrency markets, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rebounded 1.6%, climbing above $97,000 and signaling resilience for the digital asset universe amid broader market enthusiasm.

In a relatively quiet trading session, both Mexican and Canadian assets saw a surge in volatility after President-elect Donald Trump pledged to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/currency-etfs/24/11/42190765/trumps-tariff-threats-slam-mexican-peso-canadian-dollar-only-the-beginning-of-a-sorely-needed-repricing-expert-warns">raise tariffs to 25% on all imports from Mexico and Canada</a>, citing efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
The Mexican peso dropped 2.5%, falling to 22.80 per U.S. dollar, a level of weakness not seen since August 2022. The iShares MSCI Mexico ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWW#NYSE">EWW</a>) also declined sharply, tumbling 2.9%.

Stocks Mixed Ahead Of Fed Minutes, Mexican Peso Tumbles To Over 2-Year Lows On Tariff Fears: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

Wall Street managed to recover from a red start caused by heightened geopolitical tensions stemming from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/russia">ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.</a>
Ukraine launched its first U.S.-made missile strike on a Russian city, while Russian President Vladimir Putin adjusted the nation's nuclear doctrine to broaden scenarios for a potential response. Yet, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sought to assuage fears of a nuclear escalation, stating that a nuclear war is not something Russia is considering.
Amid the geopolitical noise, investors remained focused on corporate earnings. Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>), often regarded as a bellwether of consumer health, surpassed expectations for the recent quarter. The retailer&#8217;s stock surged 4%, hitting fresh all-time highs and boosting market sentiment.
At midday, both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posted marginal gains, while blue-chip stocks showed a slight deceleration and small caps held steady.
In fixed income, longer-dated bond yields dipped, with the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) climbing 0.5%. The U.S. dollar gained 0.1%, attempting to rebound after two consecutive sessions of losses.
Geopolitical risks lifted demand for commodities, with gold and oil rebounding 0.8% and 0.5%, respectively. Natural gas prices – as closely tracked by the United States Natural Gas Fund LP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNG#NYSE">UNG</a>) – extended the rally, adding 2.6% after a 5.3% jump on Monday and hitting the highest levels since June. 
Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continued to display extraordinary strength, with the cryptocurrency breaking to a new all-time high of $93,931, underscoring robust market interest despite broader macro uncertainties.

Stocks Move Higher, Walmart Hits Record High, Natural Gas Reaches 5-Month Peak: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

European markets sank on Tuesday and U.S. stock futures followed suit, weighed down by escalating geopolitical tensions after Russian President Vladimir Putin revised the country&#8217;s nuclear doctrine to broaden the conditions <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/vladimir-putin">for deploying atomic weapons. </a>
Putin's move to ease the threshold for nuclear strikes came just a day after the White House authorized Ukraine to deploy American-made long-range ATACMS missiles deep into Russian territory. 
The Euro STOXX 50, as tracked by the SPDR DJ Euro STOXX 50 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FEZ#NYSE">FEZ</a>), and STOXX 600 indices dropped 1.2% and 0.8%, respectively, both tracking toward their lowest closing levels since mid-August.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Putin Expands Nuclear Doctrine Amid US-Backed Ukrainian Strike</h3>
On Tuesday, Ukraine reportedly carried out its first ATACMS strike on a military facility near Karachev in Russia&#8217;s Bryansk region, about 70 miles from Ukraine, according to reports by <a href="https://newsukraine.rbc.ua/news/us-officially-allows-ukraine-to-to-strike-1732012491.html">RBC Ukraine</a>.
RBC Ukraine cited a Defense Forces source confirming a successful strike, marking the first time these long-range missiles were used in such a capacity. Russia acknowledged the attack.
&#8220;Indeed, for the first time, we used ATACMS to strike Russian territory. The strike was carried out against a facility in the Bryansk region, and it was successfully hit,&#8221; the source reported.
On Monday, the previous day, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols officially confirmed that the White House had given Ukraine approval to use long-range weapons to target Russian territory.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">European Markets React: Euro, Bank Equities Drop</h3>
The geopolitical developments triggered a sharp selloff across European equities. In Poland, the WIG20 stock index plunged 2.5%, reflecting the country's proximity to the conflict and heightened exposure to regional risks. 
European banks also bore the brunt of the downturn, with the banking index slipping 2.2%. Among the hardest-hit financial institutions were CaixaBank SA (OTCPK: CAIXY), which sank 5.1%, FinecoBank Spa (OTCPK: FCBBF), down 4.2%, and Unicredito Spa (OTCPK: UNCFF), which dropped 3.3%.
The euro also came under pressure, falling 0.3% to hover at $1.0550 against the U.S. dollar, as traders sought safety in the greenback amid mounting geopolitical risks.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Flight To Safety: Bonds, Gold Shine</h3>
Heightened geopolitical risks spurred demand for safe-haven assets. Yields on long-dated U.S. Treasuries fell by 4-5 basis points, lifting bond prices. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) could see strong gains following this move.
Gold surged 1%, building on a 1.9% rally from the previous session, as investors sought shelter from rising uncertainties.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">US Premarket Action</h3>
U.S. equity futures mirrored the cautious sentiment overseas, with Dow Jones Industrial Average futures down 0.4%, S&amp;P 500 futures declining 0.3%, and Nasdaq 100 futures slipping 0.1%. 
Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) surged over 3% in premarket trading after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings. 
Among defense stocks, Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>) gained 0.9%, while Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) fell by the same margin.
