He now admits those remarks may have crossed a line, especially in light of a tragic shooting that rocked Minnesota politics in mid-June.
On June 14, former state house speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed at their home near Minneapolis.
The following day, State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded in a separate attack allegedly committed by the same suspect, who later surrendered to law enforcement.
In response to the violence, Trump criticized Walz, calling him &#8220;whacked out.&#8221;
The governor rejected that characterization, arguing that Trump used a moment of statewide mourning to launch political attacks instead of offering compassion.
Federal charges against 57-year-old Vance Boelter include murder and stalking.
In court documents, Boelter falsely accused Walz of coercing him to assassinate Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), a claim that prosecutors and Walz have outright denied.
The governor emphasized he had no personal relationship with Boelter, saying, &#8220;Never, to the best of my ability, was [I] anywhere around.&#8221;
Walz has announced plans to run for a third term as governor in 2026. Though Minnesota&#8217;s top executive office has no term limits, speculation persists that he may also eye a bid for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

An Arizona woman, Christina Chapman, has been accused of facilitating North Korean IT workers in securing jobs at US companies under false identities. 
What Happened: Chapman is scheduled for sentencing next week in what is being termed as one of the most extensive worker fraud schemes ever charged by the Department of Justice.
According to a report <a href="https://fortune.com/2025/07/19/north-korea-it-worker-laptop-farm-arizona-woman-sentencing/">by</a> Fortune, Chapman admitted to conspiracy charges in February. The charges were related to a scheme that enabled IT workers to secure remote jobs at 309 companies, generating $17.1 million in compensation, which was subsequently sent to North Korea.
Despite Chapman&#8217;s claims of ignorance about North Korea&#8217;s involvement, prosecutors have recommended a nine-year prison sentence for her role.
Prosecutors are also seeking 36&nbsp;months of supervised release and a money judgment of $176,850, the same amount Chapman allegedly earned from the scheme. 
The scheme is believed to generate up to $600 million annually for North Korea, financing&nbsp;Kim Jong Un's nuclear weapons&nbsp;program.

She also facilitated the transfer of their payments, charging&nbsp;the North Korean workers $176,850&nbsp;in fees for her services.

The new legislation introduces a regulatory framework and consumer safeguards for stablecoins, a class of digital currencies tied to fiat money or commodities, the report adds.
Trump, celebrating what he called "crypto week," highlighted the bill signing as a milestone intended to reinforce America's position in the global financial system and crypto leadership.
While two other bills — one banning government-issued digital currencies and another redefining how crypto assets are regulated — are still awaiting a Senate vote, the stablecoin bill has officially become law.
Democrats have warned that the GENIUS Act's provisions could leave room for corporate dominance in digital currency issuance while offering insufficient consumer protection.
Some have called for stronger guardrails to prevent market manipulation and systemic risks.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has reversed multiple crypto-related investigations started under then-President Joe Biden.
That included dismantling a Department of Justice task force aimed at probing crypto fraud.
Several industry leaders once under federal scrutiny were present at the White House event, including Brian Armstrong, Chris Pavlovski, and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.

Their original concept was a browser extension that made it easier to shop secondhand, inspired by the clunky user experience they'd encountered, Kianni told Forbes. One of their professors was so impressed that he gave them a $250,000 grant to get started.

That initial idea evolved into Phia, an AI-powered fashion app that helps users find the best price for a product across websites, view resale value graphs, and create curated collections, Forbes reports. The app is free for users and earns affiliate commissions on purchases made through its platform.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sophia Kianni's Pivot to Scale</h2>
Before co-founding their fashion tech startup, Kianni was focused on climate education. She told Forbes that while visiting family in the Middle East, she realized many in the community didn't understand the greenhouse gas effect.
That language gap led her to launch Climate Cardinals, a nonprofit built on translation and education. Kianni said the experience taught her lessons she later applied to Phia, especially around building from scratch and mobilizing people online.
"I learned all of these little things that I now 100% have applied to Phia, just in terms of what it took to take something from zero to one," Kianni told Forbes.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">From Instagram to Alex Cooper: How They Used Content as Capital</h2>
Phia's model leans heavily on partnerships and content to grow. The app works with major resale sites like eBay (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EBAY#NASDAQ">EBAY</a>), The RealReal (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/REAL#NASDAQ">REAL</a>), and Poshmark, and has collaborations with brands such as Reformation and Prada, Forbes says.
Their social media accounts now have over 100,000 followers combined, and according to Forbes, they also write a newsletter on Substack, where companies like Tory Burch and The RealReal are building fashion communities.
In March, they signed with podcaster Alex Cooper's Unwell Network to host their own show, ‘The Burnouts,' which dives into their startup journey and features guests like Kris Jenner, Paris Hilton, and Vivian Tu, Forbes reports.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">‘We Do Have Ourselves': Their Media Strategy Skipped Traditional Ads</h2>
The podcast idea came from advisor Joanne Bradford, former president of Honey, a coupon extension, was sold to PayPal (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PYPL#NASDAQ">PYPL</a>) in 2020 for $4 billion. Bradford told them ‘Call Her Daddy' was one of their best-performing ad channels, but instead of buying ad space, Kianni and Gates pitched a podcast of their own, Forbes says.
"We don't have millions of dollars to spend on ‘Call Her Daddy' ads, but we do have ourselves," Kianni told Forbes. "It was a win-win where we were able to have this incredible distribution vehicle that is able to provide essentially all of this organic coverage to Phia."
Phia has raised $850,000 in total from investors, including Kris Jenner and Sara Blakely, according to Forbes. The company has focused on content creation and partnerships as key growth strategies.

The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced Emil Bove&#8217;s nomination on Thursday. This is the final step before a full Senate vote. If approved, Bove, 44, will secure a lifetime judgeship on the Circuit Court of Appeals in New Jersey.
There has been controversy surrounding Bove&#8217;s nomination due to allegations of professional misconduct. 
A whistleblower claimed that Bove, while serving as&nbsp;principal associate deputy attorney general&nbsp;at the Department of Justice,&nbsp;suggested that the DOJ might need to disregard court orders to implement President Trump&#8217;s agenda. Bove has strongly denied these allegations.
Despite the opposition, Bove&nbsp;appears to have enough support&nbsp;for confirmation. He needs 51 votes, and Republicans currently hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats.

Ethereum trades at $3,565.75 at the time of writing versus a 52-week trading range of $1,386.80 to $4,106.96. Ethereum hit an all-time high of $4,891.70 in November 2021.

According to the <a href="https://blog.ssa.gov/social-security-to-fully-transition-to-electronic-payments/">SSA</a>, less than 1% of beneficiaries still receive their payments by paper check. And while that may seem small, that's still roughly 740,000 people who will need to take action before the Sept. 30 deadline.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Paper Checks Are Being Phased Out</h2>
The move to electronic payments isn't new. In fact, most federal benefit payments have been issued electronically for years. This final step is meant to streamline operations and improve safety.
The SSA says there are three key reasons for the transition:

<li>Speed: Electronic payments are faster. No more waiting on the mail — funds are delivered directly to your account.</li>
<li>Security: Paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost or stolen than electronic payments, increasing the risk of fraud.</li>
<li>Cost savings: It costs the government about 50 cents to issue a paper check, compared to less than 15 cents for an electronic payment. With millions of checks issued over time, the savings add up.</li>

If you&#8217;re still receiving paper checks, you have two options for switching to electronic payments:
1. Direct Deposit
This is the most common and straightforward choice. You can have your Social Security payments deposited directly into your checking or savings account. If you already have a bank account, this may be the easiest route.
2. Direct Express Card
Don't have a bank account? The Direct Express card is a prepaid debit card that lets you access your Social Security benefits without a checking or savings account.
You can make the switch by logging into your personal my Social Security account at <a href="http://www.ssa.gov/deposit">www.ssa.gov/deposit</a>, or by contacting the SSA directly for help.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Social Security Is Doing to Help</h2>
To make the transition smooth, the SSA is mailing notices to all affected recipients. If you're still getting paper checks, you should receive an insert in your check envelope with information about how to switch to electronic payments.

No More Paper Checks From Social Security After Sept. 30 — Here's What You Need To Do Now

President Donald Trump&#8216;s approval rating has surged among Generation X voters, a recent poll has revealed.
What Happened: The CNN/SSRS survey indicated a 23-point rise in Trump&#8217;s popularity among voters aged 50 to 64 since April. This age group, which falls under the Generation X demographic (born between 1965-1980), is currently the only cohort where Trump holds&nbsp;a net positive approval rating.
The <a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25999223/cnn-poll-conducted-by-ssrs-trump-approval-policy-and-budget-bill.pdf">poll</a>, conducted July 10-13, sampled 1,057 voters from various age groups. The findings revealed that 55 percent of Gen X voters approve of Trump, while 45 percent disapprove, resulting in a net approval rating of +10 among this group.
This increase in approval could potentially bolster Trump&#8217;s standing within the Republican Party as he prepares for&nbsp;the November 2026 midterm elections.

Thomas Whalen, an associate professor at Boston University, pointed out to Newsweek that Trump&#8217;s strong grip on middle-aged voters could be crucial, as this demographic is traditionally more likely to vote.
Nonetheless, he questioned the long-term sustainability of this support.

If ETF share classes are widely available, asset managers may be able to consolidate operations by making both mutual fund and ETF versions available under a single umbrella. Six in 10 Believe Trump's New Tax and Spending Bill Will Benefit Wealthy, Hurt Low-Income Groups

A pregnant stay-at-home mom recently called into &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrjrVBsr2k4">The Ramsey Show</a>&#8221; to ask whether she should pay off a $20,000 car loan. But what started as a budgeting question quickly turned into a deeper discussion about addiction, money control and safety in the home.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ramsey And Warshaw Press The Caller To Face The Real Issue</h2>
The caller explained that her husband, who earns their household's entire $156,000 income, spends about $6,000 a year on tobacco and marijuana. She added that recent family deaths have caused his usage to spike to about $700 last month alone. &#8220;Things are super tight,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I'm afraid if I do cut a check, pay off the car, and we gain the $600 monthly to help with groceries and other bills, it's just going to go out the window.&#8221;

Host Dave Ramsey didn't dance around the issue. &#8220;If I was to say that my wife was an addict, that would mean that our marriage was either getting ready to end or she was getting help next week,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But you use this like it's part of the budget.&#8221;
He challenged the caller's description of her husband as an addict, pointing out that she allows him full access to their joint account where his paycheck is deposited. &#8220;If you&#8217;re going to call him an addict, you&#8217;re going to have to act like it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If he drinks a six-pack of beer or whatever &#8230; and he&#8217;s not drunk and it&#8217;s not affecting his work life, but you don&#8217;t like it, that&#8217;s different than an addict.&#8221;
Co-host Jade Warshaw jumped in, asking whether this is a budgetary thing or an actual addiction?
The caller insisted that her husband says he wants to get help, but &#8220;the come to Jesus talk happens about every two weeks.&#8221;&nbsp;

When the caller shared more numbers—a $3,400 mortgage, a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45545468/average-new-car-loan-payment-is-750-and-costs-are-rising-suze-orman-urges-families-to-consider-if-they-could-get-by-with-one-less-car">$600 car payment</a>, and two $3,900 paychecks hitting their account each month—Ramsey wasn't convinced by her claim that they couldn't afford groceries. &#8220;You are not out of food because he spent 750 bucks,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Now, you are going to be out of food if he loses his job because he stays drunk all the time.&#8221;
According to Ramsey, the bigger issue wasn&#8217;t <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/42793107/pay-off-the-car-loan-or-save-the-cash-suze-orman-shares-what-makes-the-most-sense-for-a-72-year-old-listeners-25k-dilemma">whether or not to pay off the car</a>, but whether her family was in a safe and financially stable environment. &#8220;You&#8217;re either going to have to reclassify this in your mind or you&#8217;re going to have to take some more severe action than you have been willing to take so far,&#8221; he said.
Warshaw and Ramsey both urged her to seek marriage counseling and make a straightforward decision: either treat the problem like an addiction and act accordingly, or stop labeling it as one. Ramsey ended the call bluntly: &#8220;I can&#8217;t tell what the flip&#8217;s going on here.&#8221;

Surge AI CEO Edwin Chen, a former Google and Meta (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) engineer, said he's intentionally avoided venture capital. "You move slow," Chen told Inc. "You have a lot of politics. You have a lot of bureaucracy." "When you raise all of that money, you then enter this cycle of, ‘Okay, you raised $10 million. What are you going to do with that money?'" Chen told Inc. "You're going to hire people. Do you need these people? Do you even have a product?"

Despite Surge AI's massive growth, most investors don't see it as a warning sign for the venture capital industry as a whole. "At the earliest stages, capital still unlocks speed," Bucher told Inc., referencing how funding helps startups access rare talent and key resources. Inc. reports she added that many founders today are choosing VC partners not because they have to, but because the right ones can make them "unbeatable."

Matunuck Group Managing Partner Jason Hogg, pointed out that AI tools now make it easier for startups to reach profitability quickly. He told Inc. that the right VC firms can offer more than just capital, including access to a proprietary ecosystem that supports early-stage companies.
Kevin Zhang, general partner at Upfront Ventures, emphasized that Surge's position is unusual, created by a rare combination of factors including enormous demand and a small client base willing to pay eight- or nine-figure contracts. "There's no single path to building a great company," Zhang told Inc.

Chen hasn't confirmed the move publicly, telling Inc. only, "Who knows what will happen in the future?" He remains skeptical of what happens to a company after it takes money. Chen said large funding rounds can create perverse incentives, where employees prioritize prestige over building meaningful products.
While Surge AI's funding plans remain unconfirmed, its approach has sparked broader discussion about control, speed, and scale in the AI startup ecosystem.

Surge AI Quietly Hit $1B Without Outside Money — Now Even VCs Want In

Tech mogul Elon Musk may be supportive of cryptocurrencies, but he has frequently cautioned against investing heavily in the asset class. One such instance happened back in October 2021.
What happened: Musk was questioned on Twitter, now X, if he owns any Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/shib/usd">SHIB</a>) meme coin. He flatly denied it.
This was when the dog-themed cryptocurrency was on a parabolic run, and would go on to reach its all-time high a few days later.

However, Musk's response piqued curiosity, and supporters of other cryptocurrencies began asking him if he had any exposure.
Musk then clarified that he has investments only in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>), Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>), and Dogecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>).
"Out of curiosity, I acquired some ASCII hash strings called ‘Bitcoin, Ethereum &amp; Doge.' That's it," he said.
"As I've said before, don't bet the farm on crypto! True value is building products &amp; providing services to your fellow human beings, not money in any form."&nbsp;

Interestingly, Musk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44069228/elon-musk-labels-meme-coins-as-casino-like-dont-sink-your-life-savings">reiterated the popular phrase</a> in a Joe Rogan podcast earlier this year to warn against investments in memecoins.
"You're not gonna win at meme coins,&#8221; he had emphasized. &#8220;Don't sink your life savings into a meme coin.&#8221;
Despite the public declaration, details about Musk's personal cryptocurrency holdings remain sketchy to this day. He hasn&#8217;t spoken about personally holding cryptocurrencies in a long time.
He has <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/02/43878760/dogecoins-journey-from-memecoin-to-real-money-crazy-but-cool-says-elon-musk-i-am-living-the-meme">been an avid supporter</a> of DOGE, though, and the acronym for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/department-of-government-efficiency">Department of Government Efficiency</a>, a government initiative that he briefly supervised, bore a reference to the memecoin.
As for Bitcoin, Musk said that his newly floated ‘America Party' will <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/cryptocurrency/25/07/46267642/elon-musk-says-his-america-party-will-embrace-bitcoin-fiat-is-hopeless">embrace</a> the apex cryptocurrency.&nbsp;
Additionally, Tesla is estimated to hold over $1 billion in Bitcoin, <a href="https://intel.arkm.com/explorer/entity/tesla">according</a> to on-chain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

Elon Musk Once Warned Against 'Betting the Farm' On Crypto, But Ended Up Acquiring Some Coins 'Out Of Curiosity' Anyway

After losing a loved one, paperwork is often the last thing grieving families want to deal with. But for one Reddit user, a surprising letter from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/07/46263553/social-security-administration-sends-unbelievable-email-on-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-report">Social Security Administration</a> months after their mother's death brought more questions — and more forms.
Here's what happened, and what others in similar situations should know.

In a recent post on the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SocialSecurity/comments/1lt0mb4/ssa_says_my_late_mother_is_due_money/">r/SocialSecurity subreddit</a>, a user shared that their mother had passed away last summer. Months later, they received a letter from the SSA stating she "was due Social Security benefits at the time of her death." The agency requested that the person complete a form to help determine who should receive any funds still owed.

The Redditor was understandably frustrated. "If it&#8217;s just a few dollars I do not want to go to the trouble; I&#8217;m just tired of all the death-related paperwork," they wrote.&nbsp;
They asked the community for insight, hoping to avoid unnecessary forms unless the amount owed was substantial.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Could the SSA Letter Be About?</h2>
According to the <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-1724.html">SSA</a>, a beneficiary may be owed a payment or refund after death. This could include:

<li>A partial monthly Social Security payment if the person died before the payment date</li>
<li>A Medicare premium refund if the deceased paid for coverage in advance</li>
</ul>

The SSA uses a specific order to decide who may receive money owed to a deceased person. For Social Security payments, priority goes to:

<li>Parents entitled to benefits on the same record</li>
<li>A surviving spouse not living with the deceased</li>

If the issue is a Medicare premium refund, the order changes slightly but still prioritizes the estate and close family members.

Several Reddit users chimed in with their own stories. One mentioned receiving a similar form after their mother passed. "It wasn't that hard to fill out," they said, adding that the payment was worth several hundred dollars and ended up being split between siblings.

Another commenter pointed out that sometimes the SSA reclaims the final payment from the deceased person's bank, which could later be reissued once the rightful recipient is confirmed.
Others suggested that if the deceased may have been owed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44174682/social-security-to-fast-track-retroactive-payments-for-retirees-impacted-by-wep-and-gpo-cuts">Windfall Elimination Provision</a> funds or had specific benefit circumstances, that might trigger a follow-up from the SSA.

If you receive a letter stating that your deceased loved one may be due benefits, it's important to verify that the request is legitimate. The SSA's Form SSA-1724 is real, and additional details can be found on the agency's website. You can also call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 with questions about the process.
Once completed, the form should be sent to your local Social Security office.
While it may feel like just one more piece of paperwork during an already stressful time, it could lead to funds your loved one earned but never received.
