A silver &#8220;supercycle&#8221; may already be underway, as the structural market tightness and resurgent investor interest in the grey metal set the stage for a potential breakout above the all-time high of $50 per ounce last reached in 2011, according to Otavio Costa, macro strategist at <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">hedge fund Crescat Capital.</a>
"Silver is just catching up to gold," Costa said in an exclusive interview with Benzinga, noting that the metal's decade-long underperformance is poised to reverse.
Since early June, silver prices have surged over 10%, breaking above $36.80 on Monday and reaching levels last seen in February 2012. The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLV#NYSE">SLV</a>) has now risen 25% year-to-date through June 9, perfectly matching SPDR Gold Trust&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) performance.
Costa indicated silver is now entering a critical phase that could resemble historical boom cycles.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Silver-To-Gold Ratio Signals More Room To Run</h3>
When gold leads, silver then follows. 
Silver is "the next one in line," Costa said.
The grey metal is trading at roughly 100 ounces per ounce of gold—a level Costa calls historically unsustainable and a clear setup for a sharp reversal.
"We've only seen this a few times in history," he said. "Every time, the ratio eventually collapses."

According to the expert, silver is now transitioning from being viewed strictly as an industrial commodity to being increasingly perceived as a monetary hedge—just as gold demand from central banks accelerates.
"Silver has been a monetary metal in the past, and once it starts moving higher, it becomes less of an industrial and much more of a monetary metal," he said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Silver At $50? The Next Key Resistance</h3>
Costa told Benzinga that the metal's next technical battleground is the $50 threshold—a level reached during the 2011 rally and in the late 1970s Hunt Brothers episode.
"There's no such thing as a triple top," he said. 
"Once silver breaks $50, we enter price discovery. Nobody knows where it goes from there."

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Dynamics Say Demand Sharply Outweighs Supply </h3>
Costa highlighted the lack of new silver discoveries and project development. "There are no major supply additions coming that will significantly alter the market in the next few years," he said.
At the same time, industrial demand—especially for solar panels—is rising rapidly.
"The demand factors have changed quite significantly," Costa said.
Solar now represents 15% to 17% of global silver demand, a sharp increase from the low single-digit percentages of just a few years ago.
Crescat Capital owns San Cristobal, one of the largest silver mines in the world, and Costa highlighted unusual pricing behavior in the physical market.
He said Chinese buyers have been paying premiums of $1 to $3 per ounce on silver concentrate over the past 6 to 12 months.
"That premium wasn't reflected in the futures market—but now we're starting to see it," he said.
"I'm already invested in silver. But you never have enough of it."

Synchrony Financial (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SYF#NYSE">SYF</a>) shares are trading higher Monday after the company announced a strategic partnership with OnePay to launch an industry-leading <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/45834455">credit card program</a> with Walmart.
The Details: Under the partnership, Synchrony will become the exclusive issuer of OnePay credit cards at Walmart. The program will launch this fall and include both a general-purpose Mastercard and a private label card for Walmart purchases.
The cards will be integrated into the OnePay app, providing users with access to OnePay's suite of financial products. Synchrony said the initiative is expected to drive loyalty and sales at attractive risk-adjusted returns while being accretive to long-term financial performance.

IBM said in the statement that Seek AI's natural language platform will be integrated into its AI development ecosystem, enabling startups and partners to build applications with conversational data capabilities.
The newly launched Watsonx AI Labs is located in Manhattan's Flatiron District at One Madison, where IBM says it plans to build and test next-generation AI systems with engineers, researchers, and startups.
According to IBM, the lab will co-create enterprise-ready AI applications spanning cybersecurity, customer service, and open-source frameworks. The facility will also focus on domain-specific AI solutions and prioritize responsible governance, a rising concern among enterprise adopters.
New York City's growing role in AI development factored heavily into IBM's decision to base the lab there. According to<a href="https://www.technyc.org/nyc-tech-snapshot-2025"> Tech: NYC</a>, the city hosts over 2,000 AI startups and experienced a 25% increase in AI workforce growth from 2022 to 2023. Since 2019, AI startups in NYC have collectively raised $27 billion in funding.

Video game retailer GameStop Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) could continue upwards momentum with a strong first-quarter financial report Tuesday <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">after market close.</a>
Here's a look at the analyst estimates and key items to watch.
Earnings Estimates: Analysts expect GameStop to report first-quarter sales of $754.2 million, down from $881.8 million in last year's first quarter, according<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/register?utm_adType=bzprocontent&amp;utm_campaign=14daytrial&amp;utm_ad=0609"> to Benzinga Pro data.</a>
The company has missed analyst estimates for sales in six straight quarters and eight of the last 10 quarters overall.
Analysts expect GameStop to report a profit of 4 cents per share, an improvement on a loss of 12 cents per share in last year's first quarter.
The company beat analyst estimates for earnings per share in the fourth quarter and has beaten analyst estimates in five of the last 10 quarters overall. The first quarter loss last fiscal year was the only loss in GameStop's four fiscal quarters last year.
A strong first-quarter report and positive earnings per share could be a strong start for the company.

Key Items to Watch: GameStop's report comes after several positive news items sent shares higher.

They would also love to hear how Nintendo Switch 2 demand could factor into second-quarter results, as the first quarter will cover February, March, and April.
Instead, investors may have to save their optimism for future quarterly results and focus on what the company does report.
One item that has been present in recent reports is the company's growing Collectibles revenue, which comes as the retailer ramps up supply and marketing for trading cards and grading services. This comes as hardware and software sales for the gaming market have faced pressure as gamers turn to digital offerings.
A strong report could send GameStop shares higher, extending the recent streak of positive momentum. However, if details on Bitcoin or the Nintendo Switch 2 remain limited, investors may choose to stay on the sidelines.
GME Price Action: GameStop stock was up 2.1% to $30.22 on Monday, compared to a 52-week trading range of $18.73 to $35.81. However, GameStop stock is down 2.4% year-to-date in 2025.

MARA Holdings said it produced 950 bitcoin in May, up 35% on a month-over-month basis, and ended the month with 49,179 in total bitcoin holdings. The company said it benefited from&nbsp;its self-owned and operated mining pool, as well as block reward luck in May. 
CleanSpark mined 694 bitcoin last month, up approximately 10% on a month-over-month basis. The company held a total of 12,502 bitcoin&nbsp;at month&#8217;s end after selling 293.5 bitcoin during the period at an average price of approximately&nbsp;$102,254&nbsp;per&nbsp;bitcoin. 
Riot Platforms said it mined 514 bitcoin in May, up 11% month-over-month. The company held a total of 19,225 bitcoin at the end of the month.
The companies also reported increases in hashrate last month, which measures the computational power used to validate and process transactions on the network. MARA Holdings&#8217; hashrate was&nbsp;58.3 EH/s&nbsp;at the end of May, CleanSpark&#8217;s was at 45.6 EH/s and Riot&#8217;s totaled 35.4 EH/s&nbsp;at the end of the month. 
Bitcoin was only about $3,000 below its all-time high at the time of publication Monday, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>. At the time of publication, MARA was up 2.50% at $16.18, Riot was up 1.68% at $10.02 and CleanSpark was up 2.45% at $10.03

Over 340 current and recently terminated U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) employees have publicly protested the Trump administration's deep cuts to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/national-institutes-of-health">the agency's research budget</a>.
What Happened: Reuters noted that more than 60 NIH employees signed a letter, accusing NIH leadership — including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy — of allowing political interference to override scientific priorities.
The stakes are high, they noted, citing how patient safety is at risk and public resources are wasted.
Signatories claim in the letter that the agency has eliminated 2,100 research grants worth $9.5 billion and cut another $2.6 billion in research contracts since Trump took office in January.
The letter, also addressed to NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and members of Congress, comes ahead of Bhattacharya's scheduled testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.
The letter states that the cuts have halted clinical trials and left patients without oversight for experimental treatments or implanted devices.
The employees told Reuters the terminated programs represented years of work and financial investment. They warned that the cuts were made without proper review, sometimes bypassing peer evaluations in favor of political motivations.

Why It Matters: Bhattacharya said the letter mischaracterized NIH's recent policy directions. 
Citing internal staff reports, Reuters highlighted that the Trump administration has proposed slashing NIH's budget by $18 billion next year. This would reduce it by 40% to $27 billion. Nearly 5,000 NIH employees and contractors have already been laid off under Kennedy's restructuring of U.S. health agencies.
In February, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/02/43618745/us-states-sue-national-institutes-of-health-over-4-billion-annual-cut-in-biomedical-research-grant-budget" rel="noreferrer noopener">a complaint&nbsp;was filed</a> arguing that &#8220;Without relief from NIH&#8217;s action, these institutions&#8217; cutting-edge work to cure and treat human disease will grind to a halt.&#8221;
The lawsuit also mentioned, &#8220;In issuing the Rate Change Notice, the NIH has also acted beyond its statutory authority and has failed to promulgate the change using notice and comment rulemaking.&#8221;
In March, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) unveiled a sweeping restructuring plan to cut costs, streamline operations <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44519638/us-department-of-health-and-human-services-aligns-with-trumps-executive-order-to-cut-10k-jobs-save-18-billion" rel="noreferrer noopener">and refocus priorities</a>.
The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/hhs-restructuring-doge.html?tblci=GiCUX7wvU_AgmIIiQduNYr6JQuJQLy6SZJGvpyeZuCzyqiCN1VcoxvTN4f7-y-PqATDviEo" rel="noreferrer noopener">restructuring</a>&nbsp;will reduce the HHS workforce by 10,000 full-time employees, leading to annual savings of $1.8 billion.
Through early retirements and other initiatives, the total number of employees will shrink from 82,000 to 62,000.

NIH Revolts: Scientists Decry Budget Cuts, RFK Jr. Political Interference, Warn Of Long-Term Public Health Damage

MP Materials Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MP#NYSE">MP</a>) shares are moving higher. The U.S. is set to engage in trade talks with China in London on Monday. Rare earth materials are expected to be a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45841817/us-listed-chinese-stocks-gain-as-us-china-trade-talks-spark-optimism">key topic of discussion</a>.
What To Know: Morgan Stanley analyst Carlos De Alba upgraded MP Materials from Equal-Weight to Overweight and raised the price target from $23 to $34 on Friday.
The analyst said MP Materials is best positioned to benefit from growing geopolitical focus on critical mineral supply chains, according to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/07/morgan-stanley-upgrades-mining-stock-as-best-pick-to-play-rare-earths.html">CNBC</a>.
MP Materials operates the only rare earth mine in the U.S. at Mountain Pass, California, while China controls most of the global market for rare earth processing. De Alba noted that trade tensions have pushed mineral supply chains into focus.
In April, China imposed export restrictions on certain rare earth elements in response to tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump. While talks are ongoing, those restrictions remain in place. Notably, the U.S. depends on China for about 70% of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45841817/us-listed-chinese-stocks-gain-as-us-china-trade-talks-spark-optimism">imports for rare earth</a> elements.
Last week, Trump eased limits under the Defense Production Act, which could allow the U.S. government to offer above-market prices for rare earths. Morgan Stanley said MP is well positioned to benefit from this policy shift.
The company is also building a fully domestic supply chain and plans to begin commercial production of rare earth magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines and other advanced technologies. Analysts are optimistic that MP will be able to generate positive free cash flows longer term.
