Here&#8217;s a look at the top-yielding Dow Jones stocks heading into 2025.
What Happened: The<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/dow-jones-industrial-average"> Dow Jones Industrial Average</a> hit a record high of 45,000 in December as one of many stock indexes to post gains after the 2025 presidential election.
As of Dec. 27, 18 of the Dow Jones Industrial Average stocks have gained year-to-date, while 12 components are trading lower compared to the start of 2024.
While investors can bet on the entire Dow Jones Industrial Average through ETFs like the Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), investors can also pick individual stocks from the 30 components of the index. Through Dec. 27, the ETF is up 13.4% year-to-date.
One popular strategy is to look at the &#8220;Dogs of the Dow,&#8221; which often coincides with the beaten-down stocks of the index that also offer high dividend payouts.
Here are the highest-yielding Dow Jones Industrial Average stocks to start 2025, with the dividend yield and stock performance in 2024 listed below.

Component Changes Impact Yields: It's worth noting that dividend investors will have to look elsewhere to chase some of the higher-yielding stocks they have become accustomed to.
Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WBA#NASDAQ">WBA</a>), which yields 10.40% and Dow Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DOW#NYSE">DOW</a>), which yields 6.99% have been replaced and removed from the index.
New 2024 Dow Jones Industrial Average components don't come with high dividend yields. Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHW#NYSE">SHW</a>) has a dividend yield of 0.80%, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) has a dividend yield of 0.03% and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) does not pay a dividend.
This means that the yield on ETFs that track the Dow Jones Industrial Average will be lower, with the goal of potentially stronger returns by replacing the underperforming stocks with stocks that have performed better over the past five years.
The latest 30 Dow Jones Industrial Average components see 28 stocks paying out dividends with Amazon and Boeing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) the exceptions.
The average dividend yield of the Dow Jones Industrial Average is around 2%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all-time high of over 45,000 points in December, one of several stock market indexes to hit records after Donald Trump won the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/41857971/trumps-win-sends-wall-street-to-record-highs-small-caps-tesla-outperform-fed-cuts-interest-rates-this-week-in-the-market">2024 presidential election.</a>
Here's a look at the top-performing and worst-performing Dow Jones Industrial Average components in 2024 and how the index's leaders could look much different in 2025.
2024 Performance: In 2024, 18 of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/dow-jones-industrial-average">Dow Jones component stocks </a>were up, with 12 stocks declining for the full year. This includes the original Dow Jones members at the start of 2024 and does not factor in the index changes made throughout the year.
Here's a look at the top five gainers for the full year, based on Dec. 27 closing prices:

For comparison, 19 of the Dow Jones components stocks <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36455419/5-biggest-winners-5-biggest-losers-from-dow-jones-industrial-average-in-2023">were up in 2023</a>, with 11 down for the full year.
A quick look at the losers list shows two stocks that are no longer part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, thanks to several changes that took place in 2024 to the 30 core components.
Apple is the only stock to appear on the top gainers list for both 2023 and 2024, ranking fourth in 2023 and fifth in 2024.
Intel was the second-biggest gainer in 2023 before falling in 2024 and turning in the second-worst performance of the 30 stocks. Boeing also flipped from being a top performer, ranking fifth in 2023 to turning in a poor performance in 2024.
Walgreens was the worst-performing Dow Jones stock for the second straight year, but that will be a thing of the past heading into 2025.

 What's Next in 2025: After several years of no changes to the 30 components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the well-known market index made multiple changes in 2024.
The index replaced underperforming Walgreens with Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) in February. The index also replaced Intel and Dow Inc with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Sherwin-Williams (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHW#NYSE">SHW</a>) respectively.
With the changes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average will now have four of the seven Magnificent 7 stocks heading into 2025 with Amazon, Nvidia, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) all included in the Dow.
The stocks that left the Dow Jones in 2024 were among the biggest losers in 2024 for the index, with Walgreens ranking worst for yearly performance, Intel ranking second worst and Dow ranking sixth worst at -27.0%.
The underperformance of several Dow Jones components kept the index down compared to other market barometers. The SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), which tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average, is up 14.0% year-to-date in 2024.
For comparison, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index, is up 23.8% year-to-date.
The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NASDAQ">MAGS</a>), which tracks the Magnificent 7 stocks, is up 68.5% year-to-date.
Having Amazon, Nvidia and Sherwin Williams as components to start 2024 would have made the index's returns look significantly different. While the three stocks that left the index were each down over 25% year-to-date in 2024, here are the year-to-date returns of the replacement stocks in 2024:

Dow Jones 2024 Scoreboard: Top 5 Winners, Losers — And How Amazon, Nvidia Could Reshape 2025 (CORRECTED)

The year 2024 saw the U.S. stock market make new records, with major indices breaching key milestones. While many stocks witnessed a stellar rally this year, analysts still expect some blue-chip equities to rise further as they forecast a better return potential.
Dow&#8217;s Performance In 2024
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index hit a record eight 1,000-point milestones this year. It started the year around the 37,000 level and breached the 45,000 level at the beginning of December. It took only seven trading days for the index to go from 44,000 to 45,000, the second fastest 1,000-point milestone ever.
Following that the index also saw one of its longest 10-day losing streak, the first ever since 1974. These 10 days of underperformance stems from a confluence of factors. 
The Dow doesn&#8217;t include all &#8220;Magnificent 7&#8221; stocks like Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>). The recent inclusion of Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) in the Dow has also pulled the index down because of the stock&#8217;s underperformance.
Dow&#8217;s constituent UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>) has experienced a substantial decline this month following the tragedy with its CEO&#8217;s shooting. Moreover, in essence, the Dow&#8217;s historical advantage of its price-weighted indexing has become a significant disadvantage in today&#8217;s market. This is because, unlike market capitalization-weighted indices, higher-priced stocks have more weight in the calculation of a price-weighted index.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Dow Jones Stocks With The Best And Worst Return Potential</h4>
Analysts still expect that a group of stocks led by Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>), UnitedHealth and Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHW#NYSE">SHW</a>) within the Dow will rise even more, according to estimates compiled by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com">Benzinga</a>. Others on the list are the Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNJ#NYSE">JNJ</a>), Chevron Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) and Merck &amp; Co Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRK#NYSE">MRK</a>).

Technology giant NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) is set to join the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Nov. 8 replacing Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>), a move predicted by several market experts to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/05/39011237/exclusive-nvidia-dow-jones-inclusion-a-matter-of-when-will-it-replace-intel">Benzinga months ago.</a>
Here's a look at what the Dow Jones Industrial Average inclusion means for Nvidia and why another addition to the index could be more important.
What Happened: Nvidia <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/11/41699259/nvidia-rides-ai-wave-to-replace-intel-on-dow-jones-industrial-average-ending-its-25-year-run">will replace Intel</a> in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a move that may have been predicted by a 10-for-1 stock split by the tech giant earlier this year.
"Price wise, shares are at that elevated level where they have announced a split in the past. Rumor wise, a stock split would make shares more attractive to be added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average," Freedom Capital Markets Chief Strategist Jay Woods said before the split was announced.
Woods told Benzinga Nvidia was a prime candidate to be included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is tracked by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>).
"When you're the face of the next wave of growth in technology, that being AI, that being the chipmaker, that to me says you should be represented in the Dow Jones Industrial Average," Woods previously told Benzinga.
Launched in 1896, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/dow-jones-industrial-average">Dow Jones Industrial Average</a> is a well-known stock market index that includes 30 blue-chip U.S. companies. The index often changes to include the best barometers of American growth.
One of the key differences between the Dow Jones Industrial Average and other market indexes like the S&amp;P 500 is the Dow is price-weighted and does not account for changes in market capitalization.
This means that company's that have higher share prices have larger weightings than those with smaller stock prices. So while Nvidia's stock split may have helped the company get into the index, it will now hurt the company's position in the index.
Based on data from <a href="https://www.slickcharts.com/dowjones">Slickcharts</a>, Nvidia would be the 21st largest company by weighting in the index if it were added today. The stock would position after Chevron ($153.33) and ahead of 3M Co ($126.94) with a price of $138.76 at the time of writing. Nvidia would have an estimated weighting of between 1.98% and 2.38% based on the current weighting of 3M and Chevron respectively.
Compare that to UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>), currently the largest weighting in the Dow Jones Industrial Average at $556.81 and 8.8%.
Intel, which is being replaced by Nvidia, is currently ranked last in the index with a price of $22.54 and weighting of 0.36%.
As one of the largest companies in the world, Nvidia is the second largest weighting in the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index, representing 6.8% of assets in the ETF. Nvidia is also the second largest weighting in the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), which tracks the tech sector, with the stock having a weighting of 14.25%.

Another Dow Index Addition: While investors are excited about Nvidia joining the Dow Jones Industrial Average, they might want to look at Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHW#NYSE">SHW</a>), which will have a large weighting in the index and see heavier buying from ETFs that cover the index.
Sherwin-Williams has a current share price of $372.97, which will give the company a higher weighting in the index. The stock would currently rank sixth in the index between Caterpillar ($377.72) and Amgen ($317.75). If Sherwin-Williams were added today, the stock would have an estimated weighting of between 4.97% and 5.91%.
Sherwin-Williams is replacing Dow Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DOW#NYSE">DOW</a>) in the index, which currently ranks 28th with a price of $48.10 and a weighting of 0.76%.
The new weightings will depend on prices ahead of the Nov. 8 changes and also be impacted by two of the smaller holdings exiting the index.
Why It's Important: Intel has been a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average since 1999 but has lagged in stock performance in recent years.
Nvidia is more relevant than Intel and used by the biggest companies, Woods previously told Benzinga.
"The growth is there, the story is there, and now the price is there," Woods said.
Benzinga's "PreMarket Prep" co-host Dennis Dick also predicted Nvidia replacing Intel in the index earlier this year.
"I'd expect this announcement sometime in the summer. I don't think it's a matter of ‘if' NVDA goes into the Dow, I think it's now a matter of ‘when,'" Dick said.
Nvidia shares are up 188.1% year-to-date in 2024 and up 2,573.6% over the past five years. Intel stock is down 52.9% year-to-date in 2024 and down 61.4% over the past five years.
Sherwin-Williams stock is up 22.3% year-to-date in 2024 and up 92.5% over the past five years. Dow stock is down 14.0% year-to-date in 2024 and down 15.0% over the last five years.
The negative performance for Intel and Dow may explain why the Dow Jones Industrial Average has underperformed the S&amp;P 500 index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF is up 11.1% year-to-date and up 51.2% over the past five years. Compare that to the SPY, which is up 20.8% year-to-date and up 84.9% over the past five years.

It is worth reminding that you cannot take advantage of new upcoming opportunities if you are not holding enough cash.&nbsp; When adjusting hedge levels, consider adjusting partial stop quantities for stock positions (non ETF); consider using wider stops on remaining quantities and also allowing more room for high beta stocks.&nbsp; High beta stocks are the ones that move more than the market.

Struggling chipmaker and key U.S. Chips Act contender Intel stock is trading lower on Monday.
S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices announced Friday that Nvidia and Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHW#NYSE">SHW</a>) will join the index next week.

Intel stock plunged to 52% year-to-date, while Nvidia surged over 181%.
Price Actions: At last check on Monday, NVDA stock was up 1.92% at $138.01 premarket, while INTC was down 1.38%.
