Two of the globe&#8217;s largest chip manufacturers will clash in court this week due to a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/intellectual-property">disagreement over intellectual property</a>.
What Happened: Arm Holdings plc's (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) legal spat with Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>) commenced Monday, Dec. 16, before a federal jury in Delaware, Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-16/arm-qualcomm-contract-fight-threatens-to-upend-chip-industry?sref=TBDibEcD">reported</a>.
Recall Qualcomm's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/21/01/19148004/qualcomm-to-buy-startup-nuvia-in-1-4b-deal-what-investors-need-to-know">$1.4 billion acquisition of NUVIA</a>, a chip startup, in 2021. Just two years earlier, Arm granted licenses to NUVIA — assets Qualcomm eventually inherited.
Arm, headquartered in the U.K. and majority-owned by SoftBank Group, claims the Nuvia deal requires renegotiation. It also wants Qualcomm to destroy certain chip designs it received once the deal closed.
Qualcomm, in court documents, insists it has its own license agreements with Arm. &#8220;Qualcomm has licensed and paid for the same intellectual property that NUVIA licensed under its own separate agreements with ARM,&#8221; the statement <a href="https://semianalysis.com/wp-content/uploads/files/71776a9c-ee79-4c5c-947b-f7e98cf40bcc.pdf">reads</a>.

Why It Matters: The case — Arm v. Qualcomm, 22-cv-01146, US District Court, District of Delaware (Wilmington) — will likely see both CEOs, Arm&#8217;s Rene Haas and Qualcomm&#8217;s Cristiano Amon, take the stand.
This isn't the first time an M&amp;A agreement involving these companies sparked legal challenges. Back in 2020, Nvidia attempted to buy Arm for $40 billion, which threw San Diego-based Qualcomm and other tech companies into a panic.
Regulators sank the deal in 2022 when the Federal Trade Commission sued Nvidia to block the merger. Arm also faced substantial regulatory pressure from British authorities.&nbsp;
Fast-forward to today, and Arm is now trying to flex its muscles by pulling Qualcomm's license — worth an estimated $1.5 billion.
And Qualcomm is not known to give up easily. Recall its past licensing tussle with Apple, <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/04/qualcomm-and-apple-agree-to-drop-all-litigation/">settled</a> in April 2019. 
What&#8217;s Next: Analysts predict the companies will eventually settle, probably with Qualcomm paying more to access Arm's tech. 
The proceedings are anticipated to conclude by Friday, Dec. 20.
It&#8217;s worth noting that the chips in question power most mainstream devices, and the legal dispute could have wide-ranging repercussions on the tech industry.

Broadcom Inc. Broadcom Enhances Open-Source Ecosystem with Bitnami Premium Release

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AVGO#NASDAQ">AVGO</a>) launched its 3.5D eXtreme Dimension System in Package (XDSiP) technology, enabling consumer AI customers to develop <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/g42339240/broadcom-delivers-industrys-first-3-5d-f2f-technology-for-ai-xpus" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced accelerators (XPUs)</a>.
Notably, Broadcom introduced the industry's first Face-to-Face (F2F) 3.5D XPU.
The platform integrates over 6000 mm² of silicon and up to 12 high-bandwidth memory stacks in a single package for efficient, low-power AI computing.
Broadcom's 3.5D XDSiP platform enhances interconnect density and power efficiency with its Face-to-Face (F2F) stacking. This method directly links the top metal layers of stacked dies, ensuring dense, low-interference connections with strong mechanical reliability.
The platform includes proprietary IP and design flow for efficient, correct-by-construction 3D stacking of power, clock, and signal interconnects.

Broadcom Inc. Broadcom And T-Systems Boost Alliance To Drive AI, Cyber Resilience, And Cloud Sovereignty

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) semiconductor fab construction in the German city of Dresden won accolades from Taiwan and German officials. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/08/40463824/taiwan-semiconductor-expands-to-europe-with-11b-chip-plant-in-germany-report" rel="noreferrer noopener">12-inch plant</a>, worth 10 billion euros ($11 billion), broke ground in August.
Taiwan assured complete support to Europe in developing its domestic semiconductor base, the Taipei Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2024/10/06/2003824865" rel="noreferrer noopener">cites</a> Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Francois Wu at a German National Day event in Taipei on Friday.

The disruption of semiconductor supply chains during the onset of the COVID pandemic in China prompted countries to consolidate their semiconductor technology position instead of depending completely on the Asian nation.
The Taiwanese chipmaker collaborated with Infineon Technologies AG (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IFNNF#OTC">IFNNF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IFNNY#OTC">IFNNY</a>),&nbsp;NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NXPI#NASDAQ">NXPI</a>) and&nbsp;Robert Bosch GmbH to construct the plant.
Prior reports indicated Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s plans to launch 28 nm or 22 nm planar CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) technology and 16 nm or 12 nm FinFET (fin field-effect transistor) processes.
Wu told the Taipei Times that the total trade between Taiwan and Germany in 2023 topped $22 billion.
Collaborations between Germany and Taiwan have gone beyond semiconductors, including imparting training to Dresden University of Technology students.
Taiwan Semiconductor stock gained 104% in the last 12 months, fueled by the artificial intelligence frenzy. The company&#8217;s geographical expansion in the US and Japan remains on track, demonstrating continued demand for AI technology as global hyperscalar invests in its AI ambitions.
However, the contract chipmaker remains susceptible to higher power demand as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41182945/whats-going-on-with-taiwan-semiconductor-stock-on-friday" rel="noreferrer noopener">it started commercializing</a> the 3 nm process.
<a target="_blank" href="https://udn.com/news/story/7240/8268574?from=ddd-umaylikenews_ch2_story" rel="noreferrer noopener">According to S&amp;P Global</a>, Taiwan Semiconductor&#8217;s power demand could triple by 2030 due to the higher energy demand of the advanced processes (7 nm and below) that require extreme ultraviolet (EUV) exposure machines.

Taiwan Semiconductor Strengthens Europe's Semiconductor Base

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) is ramping up its 2nm technology development at home and beyond despite odds ranging from geopolitical tensions to supply chain constraints to natural calamities like earthquakes and hurricanes.
The contract chipmaker&#8217;s 2nm technology commercialization at the new Baoshan plant in Hsinchu is still on track for 2025.

Western Digital's third-quarter adjusted EPS of $0.63 was an upside to investor expectations by $0.58, while sales of $3.46 billion were $100 million above investor expectations, the analyst stated.
HDD sales were up 28.2% sequentially and 17.1% year over year to $1.75 billion. Improving nearline sales aided results driven by&nbsp;hyperscale&nbsp;customers. Shipments of 24 TB and 28 TB SMR drives represented 50% of Nearline shipments, he noted.
Driven by higher ASPs, flash sales grew by 2.4% sequentially to $1.71 billion and were up by 30.5% year over year. Miller added that&nbsp;NAND ASPs sequentially increased by 18% on both a like-for-like and blended basis.
Cloud sales were up 43.1% year over year and 27.2% year over year to $1.53 billion, representing 44% of total sales. HDD ASPs increased by $23 sequentially to $145. Miller said the sequential growth&nbsp;was attributed&nbsp;to higher Nearline shipments and better pricing.
Client sales grew by 4.6% year over year to $1.17 billion and by 20.4% sequentially, representing 34% of March quarter sales. An increase in flash ASPs was more than offset by a decline in flash shipments.&nbsp;
Miller said the Y/Y increase&nbsp;was driven&nbsp;by growth in both flash and HDD ASPs and flash bit shipments.
Consumer sales fell 13% sequentially to $0.73 billion but were up 17.2% year over year. Flash and HDD were down by approximately similar rates and in line with seasonality.&nbsp;Miller added that the year-over-year increase&nbsp;was driven&nbsp;by&nbsp;growth in&nbsp;flash bit shipments and ASPs.
March quarter adjusted gross margins were 29.3% versus 15.5% in&nbsp;the&nbsp;December&nbsp;quarter.&nbsp;HDD adjusted&nbsp;gross margins sequentially improved from 24.8% to 31.1%, while&nbsp;Flash adjusted&nbsp;gross margins&nbsp;sequentially&nbsp;improved&nbsp;from 7.9% to 27.4%.&nbsp;
Miller projected fourth-quarter revenue and EPS of $3.75 billion and $1.17.

STMicroelectronics N.V.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STM#NYSE">STM</a>) inked a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Centrica plc (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPYYY#OTC">CPYYY</a>) unit Centrica Energy Trading A/S to supply renewable energy to its operations in Italy,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/04/g38195924/stmicroelectronics-and-centrica-energy-sign-long-term-agreement-for-the-supply-of-electricity-prod" rel="noreferrer noopener">starting January 2025</a>.&nbsp;
The agreement is based on the sale by Centrica Energy of around 61 GWh of renewable energy per year, produced by a new solar farm in Italy.&nbsp;

As pricing improves in NAND and, to a lesser extent, HDD, coupled with better utilization rates, it could have a sizable tailwind.&nbsp;
Over the next ~6 months, as details of the split and business models are clearer, it will unlock value here and drive the stock higher, as per Daryanani.&nbsp;
Investors underestimate WDC&#8217;s capacity to pay down debt over the next six months before the spin, enabling the HDD business to carry less debt than expected. The analyst added that this could result in a more robust than anticipated capital return program.&nbsp;
