Quanta Computer&#8217;s cloud-computing subsidiary, QCT, is ready to expand its manufacturing capacity in California if needed, said the company&#8217;s president, Mike Yang.
&#8220;We have continued to expand our capacity there in the past two years and have space to further expand anytime if needed. We also have a footprint in Thailand as well.&#8221;

On Friday, Taiwanese stocks soared to new heights, driven by the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology. This trend is expected to continue, according to market analysts.
What Happened: The Taiwan Weighted Index reached an intraday peak of 20,296 before receding, as <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/22/taiwan-shares-hit-record-highs-on-ai-boom-with-more-room-to-rally-.html">reported</a> by CNBC. 
According to Paul You, chairman of First Securities Investment Corporation, the index is projected to rise to 24,000 by the end of the year.
You attributed the global AI demand to the robust performance of the Asia-Pacific tech sector, which has been thriving amid global macroeconomic uncertainty. This has set the stage for an economic boom in Taiwan, which boasts a robust AI service manufacturing supply chain.

The group was reportedly &ldquo;negotiating the sale of large quantities of confidential drawings and gigabytes of personal data with several major brands.&rdquo;</li>
<li>REvil demanded $50 million from Quanta for the decryption key to unlock their systems. REvil&rsquo;s operator threatened to publish Apple&rsquo;s data two days later and followed suit.</li>

Digitimes Reports Cisco, Dell May Move Server ODM Orders Away from Foxconn

Apple (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/aapl#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) has reportedly hired Quanta Computer (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/quccf#OTC">QUCCF</a>) to build two new products.

According to <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20131014PD206.html">DigiTimes</a>, Quanta will build the <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/05/3630189/apples-iwatch-could-take-out-swatch-other-watch-makers">iWatch</a> and the <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/07/3776070/is-apple-building-a-12-inch-ipad-aapl">12-inch iPad</a> for Apple.

Neither product has been confirmed, but Apple has been rumored to be developing both products for several months.

Those rumors appeared to have inspired Samsung (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ssnlf#OTC">SSNLF</a>), Apple's chief competitor, to take preemptive action. The South Korean tech giant has already released its <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/10/3971748/samsung-galaxy-gear-ads-pay-tribute-back-to-fictional-future-ssnlf">first smart watch</a>, Galaxy Gear. The company is also rumored to be developing a <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/08/3831049/apples-12-inch-ipad-concept-inspires-new-samsung-tablets-aapl-ssnlf">12-inch tablet</a>.

The DigiTimes report claims that Samsung is still developing the tablet despite the loss of a massive partner. Samsung had planned to build the device with Google (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/goog#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), but Google has decided to focus on smaller tablets instead.

This left Samsung without a partner, but not without the desire to compete with Apple at every turn. 

While most of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/09/3901997/apples-newly-announced-99-iphone-5c-199-iphone-5s-coming-september-20">rumors</a> turned out to be true, there is no guarantee that Apple is actually building a smart watch or a larger-size tablet. In fact, the iWatch could turn out to be a clever codename for the company's <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/02/3340794/what-if-apples-iwatch-is-really-a-tv">long-awaited television set</a>.

Earlier this year, millions of consumers chose to purchase the iPad Mini <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/13/02/3368434/are-90-of-apples-customers-shifting-to-the-ipad-mini">instead of the iPad 4</a>. Why would Apple invest in developing, manufacturing, shipping and promoting a 12-inch tablet if consumers prefer the 7.9-inch format?

DigiTimes' sources are worried that 12-inch tablets will hurt the laptop market, but that is a non-issue. Existing tablets are already impacting notebook sales. This is what happens as technology evolves: eventually, the oldest dinosaurs get replaced.

There was a time when the computer market was led by desktop PCs. After notebooks reduced the gap in power (and became lighter and easier to carry), desktop PC sales fell and notebook sales increased.

Now tablets are destined to take over. There will still be a market for notebooks, but instead of buying a PC to surf the Web and check e-mail, consumers may now choose a tablet.

Rumor: Apple Selects iWatch, 12-Inch iPad Supplier

Humana Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hum#NYSE">HUM</a>) reported a 13% surge in its third-quarter net income and lifted its 2011 earnings view. Humana now projects 2011 earnings of $8.35 to $8.40 per share, versus its earlier forecast of $7.50 to $7.60 per share. Humana's quarterly earnings surged to $444.7 million, or $2.67 per share, up from $393.2 million, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Its revenue jumped to $9.3 billion from $8.35 billion. Humana's adjusted income came in at $2.54 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $2.03 per share on revenue of $9.26 billion.

Armstrong World Industries Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/awi#NYSE">AWI</a>) reported a strong rise in its third-quarter earnings and cut its full-year sales forecast. Armstrong World now expects full-year sales of $2.85 billion to $2.9 billion, versus its earlier view of $2.9 billion to $3 billion. Armstrong World reported its quarterly profit at $52.5 million, or $0.89 per share, up from $24.6 million, or $0.42 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding items, Armstrong World's earnings came in at $0.86 per share. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.84 per share. 

Cooper Tire &amp; Rubber Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ctb#NYSE">CTB</a>) reported a 61% decline in its third-quarter earnings. Cooper Tire reported its quarterly profit at $17.3 million, or $0.27 per share, versus $44.6 million, or $0.71 per share, in the year-ago period. Its sales surged 19% to $1.05 billion. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.29 per share on revenue of $1.01 billion.

Loews Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/l#NYSE">L</a>) reported a rise in its third-quarter earnings. Loews reported its quarterly profit at $162 million, or $0.40 per share, up from $36 million, or $0.09 per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting earnings of $0.66 per share. Its revenue dropped 7.1% to $3.44 billion. Loews' revenue from insurance premiums gained 5.3% to $1.73 billion.

Trex Company Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/trex#NYSE">TREX</a>) reported narrower third-quarter loss. Trex projects current-quarter sales of around $50 to $55 million, versus analysts' estimates of $71 million. Trex reported a quarterly loss of $496,000, or $0.03 per share, versus a year-ago loss of $8.8 million, or $0.58 per share. Excluding certain items, Trex's profit came in at $28,000, versus a year-ago loss of $5 million. However, analysts were expecting a penny per-share loss. Trex's net sales climbed 12% to $67.9 million, versus the company's August view between $65 million and $70 million.

Shaw Group Inc (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/shaw#NYSE">SHAW</a>) reported a wider FQ4 net loss on Monday. Shaw Group posted a quarterly loss of $90.3 million, or $1.25 per share, versus a year-ago loss of $24 million, or $0.28 per share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding the Westinghouse segment, Shaw's loss came in at $0.44 per share. Shaw Group's shares outstanding dropped 15% to 72 million. Its revenue fell to $1.48 billion from $1.72 billion.

CNA Financial Corp (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cna#NYSE">CNA</a>) swung to a profit in the latest quarter. CNA Financial reported a quarterly profit of $75 million, versus a year-ago loss of $140 million. 

Boardwalk Pipeline Partners LP (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bwp#NYSE">BWP</a>) reported a 15% decline in its third-quarter profit. Boardwalk Pipeline reported a quarterly profit at $47.2 million, or 23 cents per unit, versus $55.8 million, or 28 cents per unit, in the year-ago period. Its operating revenue gained 4.4% to $268.9 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of 24 cents per unit on revenue of $276 million. 

Weingarten Realty Investors (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/wri#NYSE">WRI</a>) swung to a Q3 loss on Monday. Weingarten Realty reported a quarterly loss of $33.2 million, versus a year-ago profit of $17.5 million. On a per-share basis, Weingarten Realty's loss, including preferred dividend payments, came in at $0.35 per share, versus earnings of $0.07 per share. Weingarten Realty's recurring funds from operations rose to 47 cents from 44 cents. Its revenue gained 3.3% to $138.6 million. However, analysts were expecting earnings of 9 cents, FFO of 46 cents on $140 million in revenue. 

Honda Motor Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hmc#NYSE">HMC</a>) reported a drop in its net profit for the second quarter. Honda's quarterly net profit dropped 56% to Y60.4 billion, from Y135.9 billion, in the year-ago quarter. However, analysts were expecting a net profit of Y62.6 billion.

Harmony Gold Mining Co (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hmy#NYSE">HMY</a>) reported a strong rise in its Q1 net profit. Harmony Gold's quarterly net profit climbed to 478 million rand, from ZAR102 million, in the year –ago period. Harmony Gold's gold output dropped to 328,162 troy ounces from 336,650 ounces.

Barclays PLC (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/bcs#NYSE">BCS</a>) reported a 7% surge in its net profit for the first nine months. Barclays' net profit rose to 2.65 billion pounds ($4.25 billion), from 2.48 billion pounds, in the year-ago period. Its revenue gained 10% to 25.2 billion pounds. For the third quarter, Barclays' pretax profit surged to 2.4 billion pounds, from 327 million pounds, in the year-ago period. Barclays Capital's income, excluding one-time gain, dropped 15% to 2.25 billion pounds.

Panasonic Corp (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/pcrff#OTC">PCRFF</a>) swung to a net loss for the second quarter. Panasonic posted a quarterly net loss of Y105.8 billion, versus net profit of Y31.0 billion, in the year-earlier period. Its operating profit dipped to Y42.0 billion, from Y85.2 billion. Its revenue declined 6% to Y2.076 trillion from Y2.207 trillion. 

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/mhvyf#OTC">MHVYF</a>) reported a strong rise in its net profit for the six months through September. Mitsubishi Heavy's net profit for the fiscal first half climbed to Y39.89 billion, from Y17.37 billion, in the year-ago period. Its operating profit climbed 13% to Y73.18 billion from Y64.57 billion. Mitsubishi Heavy's revenue dropped 4.7% to Y1.294 trillion from Y1.357 trillion.

Asustek Computer Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/asuuy#OTC">ASUUY</a>) reported upbeat net profit for the third quarter. Asustek Computer's net profit for the period came in at NT$4.68 billion, versus analysts' estimates of NT$4.40 billion. Asustek reported a Q3 net profit of NT$4.21 billion last year. 

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/hnhpf#OTC">HNHPF</a>) reported a 9% drop in its third-quarter net profit. Hon Hai Precision's net profit for the period declined to NT$19.10 billion, from NT$20.98 billion, in the year-ago period. 

Quanta Computer Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/quccf#OTC">QUCCF</a>) reported a 6.7% decline in its third-quarter net profit. Quanta Computer's net profit for the period dropped to NT$5.45 billion, from NT$5.84 billion. However, analysts were expecting a net profit of NT$5.28 billion.

Japan Tobacco Inc (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/japay#OTC">JAPAY</a>) reported a 24% rise in its net profit for the fiscal second quarter. Japan Tobacco's quarterly net profit surged to Y73.1 billion, from Y59.1 billion, in the year-ago period. Its revenue fell 2.8% to Y689.3 billion from Y708.9 billion. Japan Tobacco's operating profit came in at Y121.0 billion. 

Toshiba Corp (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/tosyy#OTC">TOSYY</a>) reported a decline in its net profit for the fiscal second quarter. Toshiba's quarterly net profit dropped 19% to Y22.2 billion from Y27.35 billion. 

Daiichi Sankyo Co (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/dskyf#OTC">DSKYF</a>) reported a 39% drop in its net profit for the three months through September. Daiichi Sankyo's fiscal second-quarter net profit declined to Y11.7 billion, from Y19.1 billion, in the year-earlier period. Its operating profit dropped 36% to Y18.7 billion from Y29.0 billion. Daiichi Sankyo's quarterly revenue fell 7.5% to Y224.4 billion from Y242.5 billion. 

China Railway Group Ltd (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/cwycf#OTC">CWYCF</a>) reported a 49% drop in its third-quarter net profit. China Railway Group's quarterly net profit declined to CNY1.14 billion, from CNY2.22 billion, in the year-ago period, according to Chinese accounting standards. Its revenue gained 14% to CNY112.89 billion from CNY99.10 billion. 

Clariant AG (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/clzny#OTC">CLZNY</a>) reported a 26% decline in its Q3 net profit. Clariant's quarterly net profit declined to CHF81 million, from CHF109 million, in the year-ago period. Its revenue rose to CHF1.87 billion from CHF1.71 billion. However, analysts were expecting a net profit of CHF34.2 million on revenue of CHF1.77 billion.

PT International Nickel Indonesia (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="/stock/ptndy#OTC">PTNDY</a>), or INCO, reported a decline in its January to September net profit. INCO's net profit for the period dropped to $319.9 million, from $328.5 million, in the year-ago period. INCO's revenue climbed to $1.0 billion from $947.1 million. INCO's average selling price gained to $19,323 per metric ton from $16,119 per metric ton.
