A better-than-expected U.S. jobs report for March brought renewed focus on some sector-specific <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">exchange-traded funds, or ETFs</a>. 
Healthcare, transportation, and food retail are specific examples of how the labor market&#8217;s resilience is presenting selective opportunity in the face of wider skepticism about inflation and trade tensions.
The American economy created 228,000 jobs in March, well exceeding Wall Street&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/04/jobs-report-march-2025-.html">forecast </a>of 140,000 and exceeding the 12-month average of 158,000, as reported in <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">data </a>issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hiring was strongest in healthcare, transportation and warehousing, and food and beverage stores—categories in which ETF exposure may be timely for investors.

Health care remained a bedrock of job growth, adding 54,000 jobs during March. This was consistent with the industry&#8217;s 12-month average. Employment additions were dispersed across ambulatory services (+20,000), hospitals (+17,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+17,000).
The Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLV#NYSE">XLV</a>) is one possible beneficiary of this trend. The fund is diversified with about 29.26% <a href="https://www.ssga.com/us/en/intermediary/etfs/the-health-care-select-sector-spdr-fund-xlv">exposure </a>to pharmaceuticals, 23.35% to healthcare providers and services, 22.39% to healthcare equipment and supplies, and some exposure to biotech (16.33%) and life sciences tools (8.7%).
Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 23,000 jobs, more than twice the 12-month average increase of 12,000. The majority of the gain was in couriers and messengers (+16,000) and truck transportation (+10,000), offset in part by a loss in warehousing and storage employment (-9,000).
The SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XTN#NYSE">XTN</a>), which follows a broad group of U.S. transportation companies such as airlines, trucking, and logistics companies, may experience investor demand in light of better labor market trends within the sector. Fedex Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDX#NYSE">FDX</a>), Joby Aviation Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JOBY#NYSE">JOBY</a>), and JetBlue Airways Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JBLU#NASDAQ">JBLU</a>) are among its top holdings.
Retail employment rose by 24,000 jobs in March, with food and beverage retailers adding 21,000 positions as workers returned from a strike. While retail hiring has remained largely flat over the past year, the March boost provides a short-term lift.
Invesco Food &amp; Beverage ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PBJ#NYSE">PBJ</a>) provides access to 30 companies that produce and distribute food and beverage items. PBJ has 62 basis points of fee expense and the prospect of offering a defensive sector bet under conditions of macro uncertainty.
Though the jobs report is a sign of strength, it has qualifications. Unemployment expanded to 4.2%, just above the forecast 4.1%, because the labor force participation rate increased. Also, the mean hourly earnings expanded 0.3% from last month, but the year-over-year wage growth slowed to 3.8%, the lowest since July of 2024.
The positive news comes amid increased economic anxiety, with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">recently introduced tariffs by the Trump administration</a> and retaliatory measures from China fueling worries over inflation and a slowdown.
Nevertheless, the resilience of the labor market in the core sectors provides a silver lining for shareholders. With specific exposure, ETFs such as XLV, XTN, and PBJ offer a method to ride sectoral momentum while weathering more general macroeconomic headwinds.

Moreover,&nbsp;Jesse Gary, the CEO of&nbsp;Century Aluminum&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CENX#NASDAQ">CENX</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/03/44269301/trumps-25-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect-eu-retaliates-us-steel-nucor-century-aluminum-and-other-domestic-stocks-cheer">told the New York Times</a>, &#8220;The new tariffs will close those loopholes back up and enable us to begin investing again, and bring on more production here in the U.S.&#8221;
While steel producers in the U.S. are supportive, the aluminum industry has shown a mixed reaction. Alcoa CEO William Oplinger <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/alcoa-s-ceo-says-trump-tariffs-could-wipe-out-100-000-u-s-jobs-11686292">voiced </a>concerns that tariffs could hurt the U.S. aluminum sector due to the company's strong ties to Canadian operations.
The impact of tariffs will likely trickle down to consumers as well. Domestic steel prices have already surged from around $700 to nearly $1,000 per ton since Trump's initial announcement in February. A Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-11/trump-s-metal-tariffs-set-to-hit-favorites-like-baseball-bats-and-fishing-reels">report </a> said that higher costs could affect a range of products, from aluminum baseball bats to stainless steel cookware and fishing reels.

ETFs Benefit From Egg-Straordinary Surge In Grocery Prices

Kroger Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KR#NYSE">KR</a>) shares are relatively unchanged in the premarket session on Friday.
The grocery giant has entered into Accelerated Share Repurchase agreements with Wells Fargo Bank and Citibank to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/n42605891/kroger-announces-agreements-for-5-0b-accelerated-share-repurchase-program" rel="noreferrer noopener">repurchase a total of $5.0 billion in shares of its common stock.</a>
This buyback is part of Kroger&#8217;s broader $7.5 billion share repurchase authorization.

Under the terms of the ASR agreements, Kroger will pay $5.0 billion to the dealers and expects to receive an initial delivery of approximately 65.6 million shares on December 20, 2024. This represents about 80% of the total shares that could be purchased with the $5.0 billion, based on the closing price of Kroger shares on December 19, 2024.

The final number of shares repurchased will depend on the volume-weighted average prices of Kroger&#8217;s stock during the repurchase period, with adjustments as per the ASR agreements.
Kroger has also noted that, in addition to the share repurchase program, it has $2.5 billion in capacity remaining under its share repurchase authorization, giving the company flexibility for future repurchases.
The final settlement for the agreements is expected by the third fiscal quarter of Kroger&#8217;s fiscal 2025.

Kroger Launches $5 Billion Accelerated Share Repurchase: Details

Kroger Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KR#NYSE">KR</a>) shares are trading higher premarket on Thursday. The company disclosed the termination of its merger agreement with Albertsons Companies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACI#NYSE">ACI</a>) following a preliminary injunction <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/n42448447/kroger-reiterates-its-commitment-to-lower-prices-and-initiates-new-7-5b-share-buyback-program" rel="noreferrer noopener">by the U.S. District Court in Oregon</a>.
U.S. District Judge&nbsp;Adrienne Nelson ruled in favor of the U.S.&nbsp;Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in a decision filed in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/24/12/42424808/kroger-stock-up-after-judge-blocks-albertsons-deal-what-you-need-to-know" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Oregon federal court on Tuesday</a>.
The FTC had argued that the proposed deal violated antitrust laws. The companies submitted a plan to the FTC that included the divestiture of hundreds of stores to C&amp;S Wholesale Grocers in order to maintain appropriate competition in the space.
Nelson on Tuesday found that the divestiture plans wouldn't do enough to replace competition that would be impacted as a result of the deal.
Earlier yesterday, Albertsons announced the termination of its proposed merger with Kroger and filed a lawsuit&nbsp;against the grocery giant, accusing Kroger of violating the contractual obligations of the merger agreement by failing to do all it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/24/12/42444582/albertsons-puts-an-end-to-merger-deal-sues-kroger-following-court-ruling-we-believe-strongly-in-the-merits-of-our-case" rel="noreferrer noopener">could to secure regulatory approval</a>.
Later yesterday, Kroger issued a statement that it looks forward to accelerating its flywheel to grow alternative profit businesses and generate increased cash flows.
Rodney McMullen, Kroger&#8217;s Chairman and CEO said, &#8220;The strength of our balance sheet and sustainability of our model allows us to pursue a variety of growth opportunities, including further investment in our store network through new stores and remodels, which will be an important part of our 8 – 11% TSR model over time.&#8221;

Kroger reiterated its commitment to investing in America to lower grocery prices, higher wages, infrastructure, and community support.
Kroger has invested $5 billion in price reductions since 2003 and $2.4 billion in wage increases since 2018, raising average hourly pay by 38% with benefits.
Additionally, Kroger allocates $3.6 billion to $3.8 billion annually in capital investments to build and remodel stores, enhance food processing facilities, improve the customer experience, and create new job opportunities.
Buyback: Kroger&#8217;s Board approved a new $7.5 billion share repurchase program, replacing the previous $1 billion authorization from September 2022.
The company plans to execute an accelerated share repurchase (ASR) agreement for about $5 billion of common stock. Kroger anticipates strong free cash flow and remains focused on capital allocation priorities.
Following the termination of the merger agreement, Kroger will redeem $4.7 billion in senior notes issued on August 27, 2024.
The notes, which include a special mandatory redemption clause, will be redeemed at 101% of their principal amount, plus accrued interest up to the redemption date.

Resilient consumer to the rescue
Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer, Independent Advisor Alliance,&nbsp;said retail sales came in really light on Monday morning and &#8220;while that may be good news for inflation hawks, it could be the beginning of a slowdown in growth,&#8221; which would hurt a lot more than a couple of interest rate cuts would help.
He said the resilient consumer has been &#8220;the big story of this bull market&#8221; and without them, the economy would have slowed or fallen into recession a long time ago.
Zaccarelli noted that stock prices are going up without the help of rate cuts because corporate profits and the economy continue to expand. 
&#8220;Without the consumer, this bull market is going to stall out, so investors need to see more consumer spending and not a material slowdown, which this report could be indicating,&#8221; he wrote.
Industrial Sector &#8216;In Low Gear&#8217;
Bill Adams, chief economist, Comerica Bank, remarked that industrial production was stronger than expected in May, but revisions were negative while capacity utilization was up on the month but still well below its 2022 peak.
He noted that the motor vehicle assembly rate &#8220;edged up a little&#8221; on the month and was 5% above its 2023 average.
&#8220;The industrial sector is operating in low gear, adding to forces pushing inflation lower,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;The big picture is that the industrial sector has been running cooler over the last year and a half.&#8221;
 He said that American consumers have shifted spending priorities toward experiences and away from things, weighing on demand for goods, and high interest rates are restraining business capital spending and demand for construction materials.
He noted that May retail sales figures suggested that real GDP continues to grow more slowly in the second quarter of this year than in the second half of 2023.
&#8216;Consumers Retrench&#8217;
Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, noted that restaurant spending fell in May &#8220;as consumers retrench&#8221; but that motor vehicle sales rose as dealers increased incentives to entice consumers. He also said, however, that several retail categories such as furniture sales fell for the fourth time in six months as consumers pulled back purchases.
&#8220;Consumer spending is cooling in a fairly orderly fashion,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;So far, the economy could pull off a soft landing, especially if the Fed is quick to adjust policy as conditions change.&#8221;
&#8216;Analysts Concerned&#8217;
Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, noted that the latest retail sales report pushed Treasury yields lower by coming in weaker than expected, but the downward revision for two previous months has &#8220;analysts concerned&#8221; that lower and middle income wage earners are under pressure from higher prices.
&#8220;Should employment data, particularly initial unemployment claims, continue to indicate a more defined softening in the labor market, the Fed may &#8212; as suggested by Fed Chair [Jerome] Powell&#8211;need to recalibrate its timetable in terms of when to commence policy easing,&#8221; she wrote.
