One of the ways we gauge market sentiment is by looking at rotation&mdash;which areas of the market, traders and investors are most bullish or bearish on, and watching how those trends change over time.&nbsp;
We can track this by looking at price (the upward or downward pressure on an asset) as well as by volume (where the most attention is being paid).&nbsp;
According to volume data from OTC Markets, traders rotated heavily into well-established multi-national companies last month like BNP Paribas (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/bnpqy#OTCQX">BNPQY</a>), Infineon Technologies (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ifnny#OTCQX">IFNNY</a>) and Heineken (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/heiny#OTCQX">HEINY</a>). This flies in direct contrast with August, when <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/20/09/17516451/traders-piled-into-cannabis-crypto-and-gold-securities-on-otc-markets-in-august">traders piled into emerging industries like cannabis and crypto</a>.&nbsp;
Dollar trading volume in securities from those three firms increased an average of 193% month-over-month from August to September. Shares of Wal-Mart De Mexico S.A.B. de C.V. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/wmmvy#OTCQX">WMMVY</a>) were also heavily traded, with nearly one-fifth of the total dollar volume for 2020 occurring last month.&nbsp;
On the other hand, several companies that were most actively traded in August&mdash;including names like Trulieve Cannabis Corporation (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/tcnnf#OTCQX">TCNNF</a>), Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>), Green Thumb Industries Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gtbif#OTCQX">GTBIF</a>) and Planet 13 Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/plnhf#OTCQX">PLNHF</a>)&mdash;all saw their dollar volume decline month-over-month in September. Even the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gbtc#OTCQX">GBTC</a>), which remained the most actively traded security on the OTCQX Market in September, experienced a monthly decline in dollar volume.
Overall, only three of September&rsquo;s 10 most actively traded securities on the OTCQX Market (GBTC, Trulieve, and the Grayscale Ethereum Trust (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ethe#OTCQX">ETHE</a>)) could be classified as &ldquo;emerging.&rdquo; In August, five cannabis companies made the list. This rotation could indicate that traders were looking for exposure in more developed industries like energy, consumer staples, and healthcare.&nbsp;
Venture Companies With The Highest Volume Increases
On the OTCQB Venture Market, Relief Therapeutics Holding (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/rlftf#OTCQB">RLFTF</a>), Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nwbo#OTCQB">NWBO</a>), Giga Metals Corp (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/hnckf#OTCQB">HNCKF</a>), and Basanite Inc. (OTCQB: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/basa#OTCQB">BASA</a>) all had dollar volume spikes of over 700% in September compared to August.&nbsp;
For 2020, CytoDyn Inc. Traders Have Rotated Into Big Multinational Companies On OTC Markets

The massive rally in stocks around the globe in April and May ended up marking the best <a href="https://lplresearch.com/2020/06/04/best-50-day-rally-ever/">50-day rally for stocks in history</a>.
On the OTC Markets, trading activity in May reflected that rally, as the securities that saw the biggest monthly increases in volume between April and May show how traders were paying closest attention to companies highly exposed to the volatility.
With volatility in the overall market remaining elevated, a number of cannabis securities on the OTCQX Market experienced dramatic volume increases in May. This is consistent with normal markets, as cannabis companies historically tend to trade at a higher beta than the overall market. Complicating matters is the fact that states classified dispensaries as essential businesses&mdash;thereby allowing them to stay open while stay-at-home orders were in place&mdash;though those orders forced many businesses to pivot to an e-commerce model anyway.
Regardless, trading activity on OTC Markets suggests traders were keyed in on the industry. Roughly $57.4 million worth of shares of Charlotte&#39;s Web Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cwbhf#OTCQX">CWBHF</a>) traded in May, a 127% increase from April. Likewise, dollar volume in Green Thumb Industries Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/gtbif#OTCQX">GTBIF</a>) more than doubled in the month to roughly $66.5 million, while Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/curlf#OTCQX">CURLF</a>) saw a 77% increase to just under $70 million.
As traders and investors alike bet on the reopening of the global economy, it&rsquo;s no surprise that Air Canada (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/acdvf#OTCQX">ACDVF</a>) experienced a 79% increase in dollar volume. Overall, the largest Canadian airline company was the 13th-most active security on the market in May.
Elsewhere, Brazilian car rental company Localiza Rent A Car SA (OTCQX: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/lzrfy#OTCQX">LZRFY</a>), the largest car rental service in Latin America, also experienced a massive volume increase, with just over $28 million worth of shares traded. Much of that volume came in a four-day span from May 19-22, during which roughly 3.8 million shares traded.
On the OTCQB Venture Market, dollar volume increased 23% in May. To give you an idea of how large a volume increase some of these securities experienced, the average month-over-month increase in dollar volume amongst the OTCQB&rsquo;s 30 most actively traded securities was 659% in May.
