Israel-Iran Conflict Lifts Crude Above $77: What It Means For Oil ETFs

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Thursday that the U.S. is leaving the door open to negotiations with Iran, as President Donald <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">Trump considers military options</a>.
In a direct message quoted by Leavitt, Trump said, "Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks."
The remarks came after days of mounting tension, as Israel targeted Iranian nuclear sites and Tehran responded with ballistic missile strikes on Israeli cities.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Hints At Diplomacy, Yet Keeps Military Option Open</h3>
Leavitt reiterated that while the administration remains ready to act militarily, its preference is clear. 
"The president has made it clear he always wants to pursue diplomacy, but believe me, he is unafraid to use strength if necessary," she said. 

She added that the U.S. has already engaged in six rounds of indirect and direct talks and confirmed a new proposal was sent to Iran.
"The deal was both realistic and acceptable," Leavitt said, without providing further details.
Leavitt emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Iran possesses all the necessary components to build a nuclear weapon. "Let's be very clear. Iran has all that it needs to achieve a nuclear weapon.&#8221;
The White House press secretary warned that such a development would pose an "existential threat not just to Israel, but to the United States and to the entire world." 
She reaffirmed that President Trump has been clear for decades that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon, calling it a red line for U.S. national security.
Trump's approach of "peace through strength," Leavitt said, is unchanged. "Iran can and should make a deal. Or they will face grave consequences," she added.

Markets highly sensitive to Middle East development swiftly reacted to the White House announcements on Thursday. 
West Texas Intermediate crude futures, which had surged to $76.50 earlier on the day, reversed sharply after the briefing, plunging toward $73 per barrel. 
Traders took the president's 14-day decision window and openness to talks as a sign that a direct U.S.-Iran conflict was less likely in the near term.
Leavitt emphasized that the president is monitoring energy markets closely. "He is paying attention and monitoring oil prices," she said, further reassuring markets.
The foreign exchange market mirrored the softening of geopolitical risk. The U.S. dollar index, which had been gaining through the day, slipped by 0.3% after the White House briefing. 
Unlike oil and the dollar, gold remained resilient. Futures on the bullion – which is tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – ware unchanged at $3,370 per ounce.

Dividend investing is gaining popularity this year as investors seek to protect their portfolios from market volatility amid the impact of tariffs. Dividend stocks have proved their mettle in market downturns. According to a <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/spdji/en/documents/education/education-the-importance-of-dividends.pdf">report </a>from S&amp;P Global, the S&amp;P 500 High Dividend Index outperformed the broader S&amp;P 500 during both the dot-com bubble and the post-pandemic recession.
Earlier this month, a dividend investor <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/dividends/comments/1l37sm5/my_projected_income_for_june_is_60524/">shared</a> his income report and portfolio details on r/Dividends, a Reddit community with over 730,000 followers. The investor's portfolio screenshots showed his estimated dividend income for June stood at just $60,000. He earned about $52,000 on average per month with a single dividend ETF over the past five months.

The Redditor said he currently works as a self-employed attorney and makes $600,000, with plans to retire soon.
"I am a solo attorney who practices in NY but works remotely from Thailand," he said. "I love the flexibility of being able to set my own schedule and manage my own caseload. Most of all, I love the ability to write briefs from the pool or the beach!"

The YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTY#NYSE">MSTY</a>) generates income by selling call options on MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) stock. The fund is down about 21% so far this year.

MSTY was the biggest position of the investor, accounting for about 45% of his portfolio. He started a position in the fund about five months ago with 10,000 shares and gradually increased it to 36,838 shares.
The investor said he collected about $261,400 in distributions from MSTY over the past five months with an average monthly payout of $52,000.&nbsp;
"Of course I understand the risks associated with this type of investment vehicle and nothing lasts forever, past performance is not an indicator of future performance, and well aware of NAV erosion," he said about the fund.
He plans to use MSTY's payouts to pay off the mortgage on a new apartment.
"Once that is done, I'll reduce my holdings in MSTY to generate $12-14k a month to cover my monthly expenses in NY and Thailand, where I spend a lot of time in," he added.

About 16% of the total portfolio of the investor was allocated to JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JEPQ#NASDAQ">JEPQ</a>). It's a high-yield covered call ETF that distributes monthly dividend income. The ETF invests in Nasdaq companies and generates extra income by selling call options.&nbsp;
