An agreement by the U.S. and China to lower tariff amounts could send technology stocks to new highs, according to a well-known sector analyst.



What Happened: The U.S. is lowering its tariff on goods imported from China from 145% to 30%, while China has agreed to lower its tariff on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. Both moves are temporarily <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45347089/wall-street-rips-higher-as-tariff-truce-halts-us-china-economic-escalation">in place for 90 days</a>.



The deal announced Monday morning came after a series of weekend negotiations between the two countries. 



Wedbush analyst Dan Ives discussed the winners in the tech industry in an interview <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2025-05-12/us-china-tariff-pause-is-dream-scenario-for-tech-ives-video?sref=TBDibEcD">with</a> Bloomberg.



The Big Winners: Ives highlighted Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) as one of the biggest winners in the technology sector on the heels of the tariff news.



"It puts new tech highs back on the table now for 2025," Ives said.



Ives said tariffs have been the front and center story for Apple with the company hedging and saying it would shift production to India. With the news, Ives said this could slow down the shift to India for the iPhone 17 with China getting the vast majority of the production volume.



"There was a window here where this needed to change."



Ives said the 30% tariff could go lower in the future to a 15% to 20% range, something that might start to get baked into stock prices.



"It's a game changer."

Ives said Apple has "pricing power to an extent" and the tariff news still gives the company the flexibility to raise prices if it wants.



The analyst said Apple's AI strategy really needs to produce the iPhone 17 because a large portion of the company's installed base looking to upgrade phones in the next two to three years.



"This puts that key bull case back on the table."



The other big winner named by Ives from the China tariff news is Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>).



"Tesla's going to be a huge beneficiary in terms of what we see in this de-escalation of the U.S., China tariffs," Ives told CNBC.



During his interview with Bloomberg, Ives was asked about Tesla CEO Elon Musk's whereabouts after his time spent in the White House was viewed as a distraction to many.



"Thankfully not in the White House," Ives said of Musk's whereabouts.



Ives said Musk is back at Tesla driving the company's autonomy strategy ahead of a robotaxi launch in June.



"It speaks to why Tesla is up. You need your leader back. They got their biggest asset back."



Ives said investors will look back and view this as a "pivotal moment for the Tesla story."



Other Winners: During a CNBC interview, Ives said the trade progress between China and the U.S. is a positive for many stocks in the technology sector.



"If you are a tech investor, this is a dream scenario," Ives said.



Ives said the tariff change could see NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) as a big winner.



"They are going to be one especially given the China tariffs."



Ives also named Oracle Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>), Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) as companies that the tariff news could be bullish for.



A slide shared during Ives&#8217; discussion about Tesla being a big winner also showed cybersecurity stock picks from Wedbush. China Tariff De-Escalation Biggest Winners Include Tesla, Apple: 'New Tech Highs Back On The Table Now For 2025'

The Consumer Price Index for April, due Tuesday morning, could test Wall Street's renewed bullishness after a major U.S.-China tariff rollback<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45347089/wall-street-rips-higher-as-tariff-truce-halts-us-china-economic-escalation"> fueled risk-on sentiment. </a>



Despite a slightly defused trade war, the inflation print could tighten the Fed's hand further, especially if prices came in hotter than forecast.



Wall Street economists agree that the annual headline inflation rate will remain at 2.4%—the 49th straight month above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.



Inflation is forecast to rebound from a 0.1% drop in March to 0.3% in April. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, is expected to rise 0.3% monthly and hold steady at 2.8% annually.



Bank America&#8217;s economist Stephen Juneau warns that "larger increases are in the pipeline" due to front-loaded demand and the lingering impact of April's tariff shock.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fed Rate Cut Expectations Collapse After US-China Trade Truce</h3>



The surprise U.S.-China trade breakthrough on Monday delivered another blow to short-term Fed cut bets. With tariffs slashed by over 100 percentage points for at least 90 days, economic uncertainty tied to supply chains and pricing has decreased. 



Markets now price just an 8% probability of a 25-basis-point cut in June, according to CME FedWatch data. That's down from nearly 40% a week ago. The odds for a July cut stand at 42%, while expectations for two cuts by December have dropped to 72%, from nearly three cuts priced before last week's FOMC meeting.



The Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged for a third consecutive meeting in May and emphasized that "uncertainty about the economic outlook has increased," citing risks of both higher unemployment and persistent inflation. 



Fed Chair Jerome Powell said policy is in a "good place" and the central bank will wait for more clarity on trade and prices.



 "Inflation remains above the Federal Open Market Committee's 2% target, and further progress on disinflation has been slow," said Fed Governor Adriana Kugler on Monday, reinforcing the central bank's cautious stance.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs: A Short-Term Boost To Prices?</h3>



While the U.S.-China truce reduces long-term inflation risk, at least from a supply-side perspective, April may still show upward price pressures as businesses and consumers reacted to the previous tariff escalation. 



Bank of America indicates that tariff revenues and effective rates rose about 2 percentage points in April — a modest but broad-based input cost pressure.



Core goods inflation is expected to rise 0.1% month-over-month after a 0.1% drop in March, driven by front-loaded demand and rising auto prices. Juneau highlighted a 2.7% monthly spike in the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index as another red flag.



"Tariffs should be a modest boost to goods prices this month," Juneau said, "but larger increases are in the pipeline."



Services inflation may be tamer. The analyst expects a slight moderation in rent inflation and is watching categories like airfares, lodging and car rentals for signs of weakening demand, which is already visible in card spending data.



According to veteran Wall Street investor Ed Yardeni, &#8220;increases like the 2.7% month-over-month jump in the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index in April from March bear watching.&#8221;



&#8220;Higher prices paid for imports due to tariffs are also driving up service sector firms' costs, feeding through to higher prices, notably in consumer-facing industries such as restaurants and hotels,&#8221; said S&amp;P Global&#8217;s chief economist Chris Williamson in the latest U.S. Services PMI report.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What To Expect In Markets</h3>



It's unlikely Tuesday's inflation report derails Wall Street&#8217;s tariff-relief rally—unless the numbers come in well above expectations. 



The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — which tracks the S&amp;P 500 index — surged 2.6% on Monday to an over two-month high on hopes that the trade truce reduces supply-side price pressures and stabilizes global growth.



Still, sticky inflation would signal that the Fed's 2% goal remains distant, reinforcing its higher-for-longer interest rate stance. A hotter April inflation print might strengthen the dollar and increase bond yields.



The U.S. dollar, which weakened during April's tariff escalation, is <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/BBDXY:IND?sref=TBDibEcD">rebounding</a> as of May 12. Meanwhile, Treasury yields are climbing: the 30-year bond yield hovered at 4.87% on Monday, near its 2025 high of 5%.

Quantum Stocks Are Hot In 2025: Biggest Movers To Watch

Wall Street staged a robust rally Monday following the U.S.-China trade truce that slashed reciprocal tariffs by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">over 100 percentage points</a>.



By midday, risk-on sentiment was running at full throttle, propelling the Nasdaq 100 up 3.5% and lifting the S&amp;P 500 by 2.7% to 5,815.43—its highest level since March. The Dow Jones surged 958 points, or 2.3%, while the small-cap Russell 2000 added 3%.



Under the 90-day reprieve, the U.S. will cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%. China, in turn, will lower its tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, effective May 14. The two countries also agreed to launch a formal mechanism for ongoing economic consultations, easing fears of a permanent decoupling.



U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the agreement followed "very robust discussions" in Geneva

Sector-wise, chipmakers led the rally, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) jumping 7.2%. Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>) and Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>) gained 9% each. Investors expect the trade truce to ease chip disruptions and stabilize overseas demand.



While equities soared, gold suffered its worst day since Trump's election victory in November 2024. Gold prices dropped 3%, falling below $3,230 per ounce, as investors rotated out of safe havens and into risk assets.



The U.S. dollar index surged 1.3% to 101.8. The short-end of the curve also jumped, driven by fading expectations for near-term Fed rate cuts, with 2-year yields up 10 basis points to 4.0%. Yields on 30-year Treasury bonds climbed to 4.87%,



Oil prices rose 2% to $62.30 per barrel, reaching their highest level since late April amid hopes of a demand boost from improved global trade conditions.

The United States and China agreed to slash their retaliatory tariffs by over 100 percentage points, pausing a spiraling trade war that had threatened<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s"> to choke global growth.</a>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's In The Deal?</h3>



The agreement establishes a 90-day reset, slashing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, starting May 14. 



The decision stems from high-level negotiations in Geneva, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's Vice Premier He Lifeng.



The truce halts one of the steepest protectionist escalations in recent history, following President Donald Trump's aggressive "Liberation Day" trade tariffs launched on April 2.



"We reached an agreement on a 90-day pause and substantially moved down the tariff levels," Bessent said in a press conference. 



"Both countries represented their national interests very well, but we concluded we have shared interest in balanced trade."



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Truce Cools Recession And Inflation Risks</h3>



The tariff rollback offers more than diplomatic relief — it also addresses growing fears of a U.S. economic slowdown and resurgent inflation. By averting the triple-digit import taxes that threatened to choke global trade, the deal removes a significant source of economic uncertainty that had weighed on business investment and consumer confidence.



Recession probabilities have sharply declined in response. 



The latest market-based forecast from Kalshi shows a 46% chance of a U.S. recession this year, down from 60% at the end of April, reflecting improving sentiment. Notably, consumer spending and corporate earnings had begun showing early signs of strain under the tariff shock imposed in April.



On the inflation front, the agreement is expected to ease price pressures on goods most impacted by the trade war — including electronics, automotive parts and industrial equipment.



Ahead of Tuesday's official April Consumer Price Index report, economists expect a return to monthly inflation growth: headline prices are forecast to rise 0.3%, reversing March's 0.1% dip. Core inflation is also expected to rise 0.3%, while annual inflation rates are seen holding steady at 2.4% for headline and 2.8% for core.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Markets Cheered</h3>



U.S. equity futures soared as the news hit, with futures on the S&amp;P 500 climbing 3.13% to 5,836.66, those on the Nasdaq 100 jumping 4.05%, and Dow futures up 2.62%. 



The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – surged 1.4%, with the greenback rallying 2% against the Japanese yen. 



Meanwhile, 2-year Treasury yields rose 10 basis points to 4%, as traders dialed back expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate cut. The odds of a June cut fell to 11%, down from 25% a week ago, per CME FedWatch.



Gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – dropped 2.9%, with investors rotating out of safe havens, and oil climbed 3.9% to $63.40 amid improving global demand prospects.

U.S. equities rallied sharply as investors welcomed the truce between Washington and Beijing. 



Trade-sensitive and consumer-facing stocks led the premarket advance, reflecting relief over lower input costs and reduced supply chain disruption. Technology and industrials also posted notable gains.

Wall Street Rips Higher As Tariff Truce Halts US–China Economic Escalation

Bitcoin's (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rally to almost $106,000 may not yet be its peak, with technical models and macro flows aligning to support a near-term price target of $122,000, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/bitcoin-price-prediction">according to a report</a>.



The move follows a well-defined breakout above the $84,500 level in mid-April and has been reinforced by strong spot buying and expanding institutional interest, according to a market update from May 12.



What Happened: This week's <a href="https://blog.coinshares.com/volume-233-digital-asset-fund-flows-weekly-report-f38946027bd6">data</a> from CoinShares further underpins the bullish thesis.



Digital asset investment products recorded $882 million in inflows globally last week, marking four consecutive weeks of growth and bringing year-to-date inflows to $6.7 billion. 



Bitcoin accounted for $867 million of that, continuing to dominate institutional allocations. 



Notably, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-spot-bitcoin-etfs">U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs</a> have now amassed a cumulative $62.9 billion in net inflows since launching in January 2024, a record high.



Regionally, inflows were led by the United States ($840 million), followed by Germany and Australia, while Canada and Hong Kong saw small outflows. 



CoinShares attributes the increase in inflows to "a global rise in M2 money supply, stagflationary risks in the US and several US states approving Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset."

What Experts Are Saying: From a market structure perspective, Bitcoin&#8217;s rally has unfolded in $16,000 increments, with clear resistance and support levels established at $73,000, $84,500, and $95,000, all of which have been either broken or successfully retested, according to 10x Research.



After peaking at close to $106,000, analysts suggest that momentum remains intact, with technical models now pointing toward $122,000 as the next major target.



The trade thesis has been driven by long call spreads, specifically $100,000/$110,000, capitalizing on low implied volatility, which remains around 45% despite the ongoing price surge. 



"Being long on call spreads was the superior risk-adjusted trade," the report stated. 



Traders are now advised to consider rolling into higher strikes such as $110,000/$120,000.



Interestingly, the rally to $95,000 was driven not by leveraged futures but primarily by spot buying, notably from institutional players like Strategy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) and ETF inflows, while many futures traders attempted to short the move. 



The failure of these counter-trades has added further weight to the bullish breakout.



Macroeconomic conditions have also provided a supportive backdrop. 



Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently downplayed tariff-related inflation as "potentially a one-time event," while tomorrow's CPI print is expected to hold steady at 2.4%. 



If inflation remains below 3% and U.S. economic data shows resilience, the incentive to exit positions may remain low. Political developments, particularly a pivot toward tax cuts and deregulation, are also cited as tailwinds.



Though Ethereum saw a significant price increase during the same period, its fund inflows remained limited at just $1.5 million, per CoinShares. 



Meanwhile, Sui (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/">SUI</a>) attracted $11.7 million in inflows last week, surpassing Solana (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/sol/usd">SOL</a>), which saw outflows of $3.4 million. 



On a year-to-date basis, Sui has now pulled in $84 million, overtaking Solana's $76 million.



Despite a complex macro backdrop, Bitcoin&#8217;s price action remains spot-driven and momentum-led, with the combination of technical breakouts and record-setting institutional flows making the $122,000 target increasingly viable.

Bitcoin Taps $105,000: Here's When It Could Hit $122,000

Energy stocks are holding up amid the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45317301/5-treasury-yields-could-force-trump-to-slash-tariffs-in-q2-says-bofas-hartnett">trade chaos</a>, with the benchmark S&amp;P 500 Energy Index down -4.65% year to date but up 5.63% over the past month. Comparably, the S&amp;P 500 index stands at -3.70% year to date in what&#8217;s been a rough year for most stocks.



Still, energy stock valuations remain low, and the Trump administration has treated the oil and gas sectors favorably in its first 100 days &#8211; both of which are good news for sector stocks.



That&#8217;s not to say there aren&#8217;t worrisome issues for the energy sector.&nbsp;



The YChart energy index shows prices are down to 87.87 compared to 95.06 in April and 109.59 a year ago. OPEC and other major oil producers are expected to boost production again starting in June. In a recent research note, Goldman Sachs analyst Callum Bryce said its oil price forecast &#8220;remains to the downside,&#8221; citing recession risks and lower production capacity. While the tariff wars haven&#8217;t hurt the energy sector as severely as others, the costs of oil and gas production, refining, and transport are rising at a time when prices are lagging.



In its most recent<a href="https://boereport.com/2025/05/05/letter-to-stockholders-issued-by-diamondback-energy-inc-2/"> Letter to Stockholders</a>, outgoing Diamondback CEO Travis D. Stice said the oil industry is facing lower demand and higher supply, has lowered oil prices and increased volatility, &#8220;with massive industry changes on the horizon.&#8221;



&#8220;Over the past decade, the cost of supply for the average barrel of oil produced in the United States has increased. The shale revolution has evolved from proof of concept to manufacturing mode and is now in a more mature stage of development, providing (free cash flow generation and return of capital),&#8221; Stice stated. 



&#8220;Today, geologic headwinds outweigh the tailwinds provided by improvements in technology and operational efficiency,&#8221; he added. &#8220;On an inflation-adjusted basis, there have only been two quarters since 2004 where front-month oil prices have been as cheap as they are today (excluding 2020, which was impacted by the global pandemic). Therefore, we believe we are at a tipping point for U.S. oil production at current commodity prices.&#8221;



Still, there are promising signs. Energy stocks still trade at low valuations, and the Trump administration has treated the industry favorably.



&#8220;Energy is an industry that never sleeps,&#8221; said Adam Ferrari, CEO at Phoenix Energy. &#8220;Right now, the sector is in a state of strategic recalibration as a response to broader headwinds like inflation, trade imbalances, and geopolitical instability influencing cost structures.&#8221;



Additionally, political measures like President Trump&#8217;s executive orders surrounding energy security bolster fossil fuel development more broadly. &#8220;Still, companies need to include uncertainties in their plans for capital deployment and resource allocation in the future.&#8221;



Technology advancements are also working in the energy sector&#8217;s favor.



&#8220;The energy industry is undergoing significant changes due to multiple factors, including the rise of artificial intelligence and the massive building of infrastructure and the power requirements needed for data centers to operate which has the tech, and utilities sectors scrambling to meet the need,&#8221; said Chris Cook, Senior Equity Trader and Research Analyst at Frost Investment Advisors.



Those advancements should boost some energy suppliers more than others.



&#8220;These new opportunities are still in the beginning stages, and we expect more will develop as AI technology continues to evolve, making this a long-term investment theme over the next ten years or more,&#8221; Cook said. &#8220;Based on the advantages of access, availability, and reliability, we expect to see natural gas generation as an ideal fuel and power source to help close the demand gap, especially within Texas.&#8221;



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Three Energy Stocks To Play In A Roiling Market</h1>



With enough moving parts to equip a Permian Basin oil rig, some high-value and high-dividend-paying energy stocks are worth looking at now. These three names could boost a dormant 2025 investment portfolio.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Marathon Petroleum</h2>



Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MPC#NYSE">MPC</a>) is on the move, with its share price up 22% over the past month alone. In its most recent quarterly report, the company announced revenues of $31.85 billion, well ahead of analyst expectations of $1.7 billion. Analysts are essentially backing MPC, with Scotiabank issuing a buy rating on MPC while Bank of America is keeping a hold on the stock. MPC also offers a healthy 2.67% dividend yield, with the company reporting it would hold a 0.91% quarterly dividend, which should satisfy income-minded shareholders.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Schlumberger Ltd.</h2>



Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLB#NYSE">SLB</a>), a Houston-based energy technology company, has seen its shares fall by 10% year-to-date, but there&#8217;s a lot to like about the stock. Eight of nine analysts surveyed by Benzinga are either &#8220;bullish&#8221; or &#8220;somewhat bullish&#8221; on the stock, with a consensus target price of $50.4 per share. In a recent statement, SLB said it would boost shareholder returns to $4 billion in 2025. SLB stock currently clocks in with a robust 3.31% dividend yield.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kinder Morgan</h2>



Natural gas has been an energy industry stalwart, which is a big reason why the sector generated an 11.08% annualized return over three years and a 31.58% annualized return over the five years ending March 31, 2025, according to a recent<a href="https://www.usbank.com/investing/financial-perspectives/market-news/energy-sector-performance.html"> US Bank research note</a>.



&#8220;Rising natural gas prices are the biggest driver of energy sector performance,&#8221; says Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director with U.S. Bank Asset Management Group. &#8220;Natural gas companies comprise about 30% of the sector&#8217;s S&amp;P 500 index. In early 2025, natural gas prices are significantly higher than they were at the end of 2024. &#8220;Demand for liquid natural gas (LNG), particularly from European markets, plays a role in price increases,&#8221; says Haworth, noting that European countries are replacing supplies produced in Russia before Russia invaded Ukraine.



Kinder Morgan (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KMI#NYSE">KMI</a>) fits the bill as a solid natural gas play. The energy company controls 40% of the natural gas transported in the U.S., and it stores and ships about 15% of all US natural gas. The stock is holding steady in 2025 and has returned 43% over the past year. Toss in a hefty 4.30% dividend, and KMI stands out as a stable force in an increasingly unstable energy economy.



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Other Energy Plays To Consider</h1>



Market mavens are also looking at a handful of other energy stocks worth special attention.



&#8220;On the natural gas front, Cheniere Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LNG#NYSE">LNG</a>) remains a standout given its role in U.S. LNG exports and strong global demand,&#8221; said Fabio Ruggeri, founder &amp; CEO of MenthorQ, an AI-powered investment trading platform. &#8220;EOG Resources (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EOG#NYSE">EOG</a>) is a top-tier shale operator with disciplined capital management, while Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PXD#NYSE">PXD</a>) offers solid Permian exposure and attractive shareholder return policies.&#8221;

On Monday, the U.S. and China agreed to a temporary reduction in most tariffs on each other&#8217;s goods, marking a considerable easing of trade tensions. As a result, major tech stocks caught in the trade war, such as Apple (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Amazon (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), climbed more than 4% during the pre-market trading session.



What Happened: The world&#8217;s two largest economies have agreed to a 90-day suspension of &#8220;reciprocal&#8221; tariffs, reducing them from 125% to 10%.&nbsp;However, the U.S. will maintain its 20% tariffs on Chinese imports linked to fentanyl, keeping the overall tariff level on China at 30%, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/12/us-and-china-agree-to-slash-tariffs-for-90-days.html">reported </a>CNBC.



As per the joint statement, Beijing has also agreed to suspend or lift all non-tariff countermeasures imposed since April 2, including sanctions on certain U.S. companies and export restrictions on key minerals, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/global-economy/article/3309975/china-us-reduce-majority-tariffs-after-first-round-trade-talks?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=homepage">as per</a> the South China Morning Post.



This development comes after intensive trade talks between U.S. and Chinese representatives in Switzerland, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressing satisfaction with the discussions, stating, &#8220;We had very productive talks&nbsp;and I believe that the&nbsp;venue, here in Lake Geneva,&nbsp;added great equanimity to what&nbsp;was a very positive process.&#8221;



"Neither side wants a decoupling,&#8221; emphasized Bessent. 



Both countries have signaled their commitment to ongoing dialogue on economic and trade policy. Earlier in the day, the official handle of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. stated, &#8220;high-level meeting on economic and trade affairs were in-depth, candid and constructive,&#8221; citing Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The White House announced progress on the deal in a post on X on Sunday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hailed the &#8220;substantial progress&#8221; made between the two countries in what he called &#8220;very important trade talks.&#8221;



U.S. Trade Ambassador Jamieson Greer pointed out the quickness with which U.S. and China &#8220;were able to come to agreement.&#8221; He expressed confidence that the deal that was struck would help the U.S. with the &#8220;national emergency&#8221; that was the massive $1.2 trillion trade deficit.

On Sunday, the Chinese delegation also announced that both sides had reached an &#8220;important consensus&#8221; during the ongoing trade talks in Geneva. While neither side has released any details yet, Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang was quoted as saying that the outcome would be &#8220;good news for the world,&#8221; according to a report by Reuters.

Accenture Plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ACN#NYSE">ACN</a>): The IT services company saw strong interest from readers during the week on the heels of two acquisition announcements. On May 6, the company announced it was <a href="https://newsroom.accenture.com/news/2025/accenture-acquires-ascendient-learning-to-expand-learning-and-certification-capabilities-with-instructor-led-training-and-industry-recognized-credentials">acquiring </a>Ascendient Learning to expand its learning and certification capabilities. The company said the acquisition expands the number of certification offerings, enhances instructor-led training and adds upskilling programs. On May 8, the company announced the <a href="https://newsroom.accenture.com/news/2025/accenture-to-acquire-yumemi-to-accelerate-the-launch-of-innovative-and-influential-digital-products">acquisition </a>of Japanese digital services company Yumemi. The company said the acquisition will enhance capabilities to design and launch products for clients. Yumemi has designed digital products for more than 600 companies since its founding in 2000. Accenture is expected to report third-quarter financial results in June. The company has beaten analyst estimates for earnings per share in nine of the last 10 quarters and beaten revenue estimates in seven of the last 10 quarters.
