Crude oil's decline shows no signs of ending, with prices sinking more than 2% below $57 per barrel on Thursday morning as markets brace for a potential OPEC+ supply hike and rising signs of economic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">stress across major economies.</a>
West Texas Intermediate crude futures – as closely represented by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) – are now on track to log four straight days of declines and reach April lows, when front-month contracts broke below $55, marking the cheapest level in over four years.
Since peaking in March 2022, oil prices have plunged 55%, with a 21% drop year-to-date and a 30% decline over the past 12 months, indicating a persistent bear market struggling to find a floor.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">OPEC+ May Raise Supply Despite Falling Prices</h3>
Fresh pressure on prices came from reports that Saudi Arabia has told allies and industry participants it is prepared to endure a longer stretch of low prices without further supply cuts. 
This strengthened speculation that OPEC+ could unveil a new production increase at its May 5 meeting.
David Goldman, head of trading at Novion Global, said reports about Riyadh&#8217;s stance triggered Thursday's sharp sell-off. 
"Oil prices fell as much as 4% after reports that Saudi Arabia can endure a sustained period of depressed prices," he said, noting that the market fears a longer period of surplus supply from the Saudi-led alliance.
Goldman Sachs analyst Daan Struyven expects OPEC+ to raise production modestly by 100,000 barrels per day in June and July, keeping output steady afterward. Yet, the risks are tilted toward a more aggressive ramp-up. "Kazakhstan&#8217;s focus on national interests increases risks of a larger OPEC+ production hike in June," Struyven said.
&#8220;While the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs provided a stay of execution, the chances of recession remains unusually high,&#8221; he added. 
Adding to bearish sentiment was the latest GDP report, which showed the U.S. economy contracted in the first quarter for the first time in three years.
Goldman Sachs' economics team now sees a 45% probability of a U.S. recession in the next 12 months, citing persistently high policy uncertainty, weak real income growth and cautious consumer spending. 
They believe oil prices could fall even more during a recession than during a typical growth slowdown.
&#8220;Oil prices are likely to decline more in the next recession relative to the slowdown in global growth and in oil demand because OPEC supply is likely to fall less than the median-peak-to-trough decline of 2.7mb/d in for the last three recessions,&#8221; Struyven said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">&#8216;The Cure For Low Oil Prices Is Low Oil Prices&#8217;</h3>
David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, said the bearish backdrop is reinforced by structural demand weakness in China and new geopolitical risks. 
"The global demand growth outlook was weak even before President Trump began his trade war," he said. "Now it has to deal with Trump's tariffs which have effectively ended trade between the U.S. and China."
&#8220;OPEC+ is in no mood to step in to support the&nbsp;oil&nbsp;price. Quite the contrary, as the group is anxious to unwind the production cuts which did so much to support the&nbsp;oil&nbsp;price over the past couple of year,&#8221; he added.
Still, he indicated that markets rarely move in straight lines. Sharp bottoms, like sharp tops, often signal a turning point, though it&#8217;s too early to say whether crude has reached that stage. 
Amid mixed signals and rising uncertainty, Morrison suggested that oil remains tough to trade, but reiterated a familiar market truism: "The cure for low oil prices is low oil prices."

Kohl's Corporation ("Kohl's" or the "Company") (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) today announced that the Kohl's Board of Directors (the "Board") has appointed Michael Bender as Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Mr. Bender has served as a Director of the Board since July 2019 and was appointed Board Chair in May 2024.
Mr. Bender's appointment follows the Board's decision to terminate Ashley Buchanan for cause. An investigation conducted by outside counsel and overseen by the Audit Committee of the Board determined Mr. Buchanan violated company policies by directing the Company to engage in vendor transactions that involved undisclosed conflicts of interest, which the Board determined to be cause. Mr. Buchanan's termination is unrelated to the Company's performance, financial reporting, results of operations and did not involve any other Company personnel. In accordance with the terms of this employment contract, Mr. Buchanan is no longer a member of the Board, and the Company has withdrawn his nomination for election as a Director at the Company's 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.
The Board will initiate a search to identify a permanent CEO and retain a leading search firm to assist with this process.

Chinese electric vehicle companies shared their April delivery details this week.
On Wednesday, Li Auto Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g45124062/li-auto-inc-april-2025-delivery-update" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced it</a> had delivered 33,939 vehicles in April 2025, representing a 31.6% year-over-year increase. As of April 30, 2025, Li Auto&#8217;s cumulative deliveries reached 1,260,675.

Li Auto said it has remained the sales champion for SUVs priced above RMB200,000 over the past three consecutive quarters, maintaining the highest market share in both the RMB200,000-RMB300,000 and RMB300,000-RMB400,000 large SUV markets as well as the RMB400,000-RMB500,000 full-size SUV market. This achievement was driven by the sales performance of its Li L series models.
Li Auto <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44582215/chinas-xpeng-clocks-record-q1-ev-sales-deliveries-surge-3-6x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">delivered 36,674 vehicles</a> in March 2025, marking a 26.5% growth. This brought its first-quarter deliveries to 92,864, a 15.5% increase. As of March 31, 2025, Li Auto's cumulative deliveries reached 1.226 million.
In April, XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45125403/xpeng-announces-vehicle-delivery-results-for-april-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">delivered 35,045 Smart EVs</a>, marking a 273% year-over-year increase and surpassing 30,000 units for the sixth consecutive month, the company announced on Thursday. Cumulative deliveries of XPeng MONA M03 had surpassed 100,000 units. The XPeng P7+ achieved its 50,000th vehicle production milestone in five months since its launch. For the first four months of 2025, XPeng delivered 129,053 Smart EVs, representing a 313% increase Y/Y.
In March, XPeng delivered 33,205 Smart EVs, implying a 268% growth, topping 30,000 units for the fifth consecutive month.
For the first quarter of 2025, XPeng delivered 94,008 Smart EVs, a 331% increase over last year.
Nio Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45126395/nio-inc-provides-april-2025-delivery-update" rel="noreferrer noopener">delivered 23,900 vehicles</a> in April 2025, representing an increase of 53.0% Y/Y, the company announced on Thursday. The deliveries consisted of 19,269 vehicles from the company&#8217;s premium smart electric vehicle brand Nio, 4,400 vehicles from the company&#8217;s family-oriented smart electric vehicle brand ONVO, and initial deliveries of the company&#8217;s small smart high-end electric car brand FIREFLY, which started in late April 2025. Cumulative deliveries reached 737,558 as of April 30, 2025.
Nio delivered 15,039 vehicles in March 2025, representing a&nbsp;growth of 26.7%. The deliveries comprised 10,219 vehicles from its premium smart electric vehicle brand Nio and 4,820 from the company's family-oriented smart electric vehicle brand ONVO. The company delivered 42,094 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, marking a growth of 40.1%. Cumulative deliveries reached 713,658 as of March 31, 2025.
XPeng stock surged over 129% in the last 12 months. In April, XPeng unveiled <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/04/44848073/tesla-rival-xpeng-unveils-bold-vision-ai-powered-evs-flying-cars-humanoid-robots" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">its latest initiatives</a>, including the global debut of its 2025 XPeng X9 model and a roadmap that connects smart EVs, flying cars and humanoid robots under its AI Tech Tree platform. XPeng's homegrown Turing AI chip underpins multiple products, including autonomous vehicles and robotic platforms is scheduled for mass production in mainland China by mid-2025. The AEROHT Land Aircraft Carrier, a modular flying vehicle, is scheduled to enter production in 2026, with more than 4,000 pre-orders already secured.
The company also unveiled&nbsp;&#8220;IRON,&#8221; a humanoid robot.
XPeng debuted the X9 model, which includes nearly 500 upgrades, such as ultra-fast 800V charging, zero-gravity seating, and an AI-tuned adaptive suspension system. &nbsp;XPeng is preparing its Kunpeng Super Electric System for mass rollout by late 2025.
Nio stock is down over 23% as it grappled with&nbsp;challenges in achieving full-year profitability, primarily due to high research and development expenses and significant operational costs.
Price Actions:&nbsp;XPEV stock is up 2.26% at $19.02 premarket at the last check Thursday. NIO is up 2.47% and LI is up 1.27%.
