Vanguard Consumer Discretionary ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VCR#NYSE">VCR</a>): Tesla is 14.5% of this widely diversified consumer ETF, which is a significant risk factor. The fund opened 1.3% in the red in response to Tesla&#8217;s results, a meaningful slump for an ETF with other strong stocks in its portfolio as well.
For traders in these ETFs, Tesla&#8217;s most recent quarter wasn&#8217;t a speed bump, it was a pothole the size of a Cybertruck.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Backstory: A Rough Quarter For Tesla</h2>
Tesla reported adjusted earnings of 33 cents a share, below forecasts of 39 cents, and revenue decreased 12% YoY to $22.5 billion, its steepest decline in more than a decade. Auto revenue dropped 16%, an agonizing 13.5% year-over-year decline in deliveries globally.
The company&#8217;s Model 3/Y cars did most of the heavy work, but it wasn&#8217;t enough to keep it out of worst delivery performance in its history. This is the second consecutive quarter of falling deliveries, a red flag even for the most die-hard bulls.

While sales are lagging, Musk is putting the pedal to the metal on the sci-fi story. Tesla rolled out its paid robotaxi service in Austin and is expanding across U.S. cities. Musk stated that the target is to reach &#8220;half the U.S. population&#8221; by the end of the year, pending regulators not putting the brakes on.
Tesla&#8217;s Q2 earnings miss isn&#8217;t merely a company tale, it&#8217;s an ETF tale. Portfolios such as XLY, VCR, and TESL, which are heavily concentrated in TSLA, are now along for the ride on a very volatile vehicle. Mobileye Global (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MBLY#NASDAQ">MBLY</a>) stock fell on Thursday after it reported its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/node/46610781" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal second-quarter</a> 2025 results.
The autonomous firm reported a quarterly revenue growth of 15% year-on-year to $506.00 million, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate</a> of $463.26 million.&nbsp;Adjusted EPS of 13 cents topped the&nbsp;analyst consensus estimate of 9 cents.&nbsp;
Mobileye&nbsp;raised its fiscal 2025&nbsp;revenue outlook to $1.765 billion- $1.885 billion (prior $1.690 billion-$1.810 billion) versus the&nbsp;$1.770 billion&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate</a> and adjusted operating income of $210 million-$286 million (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/04/44978234/intel-autonomous-driving-firm-mobileye-reaffirms-2025-outlook-after-record-q1-growth-in-system-shipments-and-design-wins" rel="noreferrer noopener">prior $175 million-$260 million</a>).

Reacting to the earnings report, Needham analyst Quinn Bolton reiterated a buy rating on Mobileye Global <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/MBLY/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">with a</a> $18&nbsp;price forecast. The stock continued its decline on Friday.
Mobileye&#8217;s second-quarter 2025 results aligned mainly with its July 9 pre-announcement. Still, Bolton noted that the market reacted negatively due to what appears to be a conservative fourth-quarter revenue outlook.
While third-quarter revenue guidance came in significantly above consensus, the analyst noted management adopted a cautious stance on fourth-quarter visibility.
His fourth-quarter revenue projection stands $20 million above management&#8217;s implied figures, suggesting room for upside if demand trends continue.
Bolton stated that the management noted that customer inventory levels align well with actual demand, reducing the risk of customers pulling forward orders in anticipation of potential tariffs.
He said Mobileye boosted its full-year revenue and operating income guidance, raising the midpoints by 4% and 14%, respectively. This reflects stronger-than-expected shipments: EyeQ volumes were revised upward to 33.5–35.5 million units (from 32–34 million), and SuperVision units are now expected to hit 40,000 (up from low-20,000).
The analyst modeled third-quarter 2025 gross margin at 68.2%, slightly down from second-quarter 2025 but still above Street expectations.
Shipments of ~9.7 million EyeQ units beat the analyst&#8217;s ~9 million estimate, supported by strong demand across OEMs, including China-based automakers.
Adjusted gross margin was 68.6%, slightly ahead of his 68.4% estimate and nearly matching the Street&#8217;s 68.8%. Operating expenses came in lower than expected at $241 million, driving adjusted operating income to $106 million, surpassing both his expectations and the top end of the preliminary guide.
Management emphasized 2027 as a pivotal revenue acceleration point, driven by broader adoption of SuperVision, initial commercial deployments of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), and expansion of its Drive platform, Bolton noted.
More than 19 vehicle models are expected to launch with Chauffeur and SuperVision by then, including major OEMs such as Audi and Porsche, the analyst noted.
Full-scale Drive deployments are planned across multiple U.S. and European cities beginning in late 2026. The CAV business, including Autonomous Mobility-as-a-Service (AMaaS), is expected to contribute $150 million in 2027 revenue—well below Street expectations—while ADAS revenue could reach around $2 billion, a conservative figure per the analyst.
Bolton noted that Waymo&#8217;s 25% market share in San Francisco supports the overall industry outlook. Mobileye cited partnerships with Volkswagen (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VWAGY#OTC">VWAGY</a>) (MOIA), HOLON, Uber Technologies (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>), Lyft (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYFT#NASDAQ">LYFT</a>), and European public transport providers. The company is supplying both operational tech and customer-facing software while transitioning to full production hardware for the ID. Buzz robotaxi, he noted.
As per the analyst, teleoperations are expected to begin in 2025, with driverless service planned for 2026.
Bolton noted that SuperVision shipments exceeded expectations, prompting a rise in fiscal 2025 guidance to 40,000 units from the previously estimated 20,000+.
The Zeekr 009 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZK#NYSE">ZK</a>) and Polestar 4 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PSNY#NASDAQ">PSNY</a>) models are driving near-term strength, with Audi and Porsche SOP (start of production) expected by year-end 2026 and broader ramps in 2027.
While management&#8217;s tone was cautious, the analyst noted upside in fourth-quarter revenue, improving margin visibility, and strong long-term positioning in ADAS and autonomous tech.
Despite conservatively guiding in some areas, the EyeQ strength, SuperVision traction, and robotaxi pipeline kept Bolton confident in Mobileye&#8217;s long-term growth trajectory.
Price Action:&nbsp;Mobileye stock is down 6.13% at $14.47 at the last check on Friday.

Despite this positive daily movement, Rivian&#8217;s year-to-date performance, with a gain of just over 6%, continues to trail the Nasdaq 100 Index&#8217;s more robust 11% return.

This contrasts sharply with Tesla, which has seen a 21% year-to-date plunge, grappling with its second consecutive quarterly sales decline and issuing a warning of &#8220;rough quarters&#8221; ahead due to the expiration of federal EV tax credits. 
Weaker automotive revenue, escalating competition (particularly in China and Europe), and a lack of 2025 guidance have further amplified investor concerns for Tesla, as reported by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/24/tesla-tsla-shares-today.html#:~:text=Tesla%20shares%20fell%20on%20Thursday,federal%20electric%20vehicle%20tax%20credits.">CNBC</a> on Thursday.
While Rivian&#8217;s overall year-to-date trajectory might lag, the company is actively pursuing a strategy of expansion and technological innovation. Last week, Rivian joined the prestigious Russell 1000 index, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/large-cap/25/07/46449975/rivian-unseats-lucid-draftkings-ousts-plug-power-in-russell-1000-shake-up">a significant milestone</a>, while its rival, Lucid (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>), exited the index.

Furthermore, Rivian recently broke ground in Laval, Québec, Canada, on a new service center in partnership with Montoni Group. This facility, built by local partners, aims to enhance after-sales support and is another step in Rivian&#8217;s broader North American expansion strategy.
In terms of technological advancements, Rivian continues to enhance the EV driving experience. The company recently unveiled a next-generation in-car navigation system co-developed with Alphabet&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) Google. 
This integration of Google Maps&#8217; Auto SDK provides improved route planning, more detailed energy monitoring through an upgraded Energy app, and smart charging features launching this month, with bidirectional charging slated for 2025. Rivian has also maintained its focus on execution amid potential policy shifts. The company reaffirmed its full-year delivery guidance of 40,000 to 46,000 vehicles after delivering 10,661 units in the second quarter of 2025. 
While potential changes to fuel economy standards could impact its $325 million ZEV credit revenue stream, Rivian&#8217;s strong product roadmap, including the upcoming R2 launch in early 2026, and strategic infrastructure investments position it for long-term growth.
However, Rivian could <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46627485/trump-tariffs-are-causing-decline-in-ev-battery-demand-says-tesla-general-motors-supplier-lg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">face major setbacks</a> as Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs and new legislation threaten to derail EV growth in the U.S. LG Energy Solutions, a key battery supplier for Tesla and General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>), warned that the combination of new tariffs and the early end to EV subsidies will pressure automakers to hike prices, likely slowing demand across the board.
Rivian stands to lose even more under Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Big Beautiful Bill,&#8221; which scraps the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and weakens CAFE standards. That could severely impact ZEV credit sales, a key revenue stream for emerging EV players like Rivian. As industry suppliers like LG and Panasonic have already shifted production plans in response to declining demand, Rivian may struggle to stay competitive without meaningful policy support.
In other recent developments, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46424013/rivian-ceo-joins-bezos-gates-divorce-club-voting-power-slashed-before-r2-debut" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transferred about 4 million</a> shares and 6 million stock options to his ex-wife, Meagan Scaringe, as part of their divorce settlement, reducing his stake in the EV maker. The move lowers his ownership to roughly 2% and his voting power to 4%, the smallest since Rivian&#8217;s 2021 IPO. While the transfer doesn&#8217;t impact Rivian&#8217;s operations, it reshapes the company&#8217;s ownership structure ahead of its R2 launch and could factor into future acquisition scenarios.

In a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary on Friday, over 80 bipartisan members asked the agency to stop counterfeit and copycat versions of GLP-1 drugs like Novo Nordisk A/S&#8217; (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>) Wegovy (semaglutide) and Eli Lilly and Co.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) Zepbound <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/weight-loss" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">from flooding the market</a>.
The group led by U.S. Representative Richard Hudson and Herbert Conaway <a href="https://hudson.house.gov/press-releases/congressman-hudson-urges-action-on-counterfeit-chinese-weight-loss-drugs-hurting" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wrote</a> the letter urging immediate action against the rising threat of illegal, counterfeit anti-obesity medications entering the U.S. 
The letter <a href="https://x.com/RepRichHudson/status/1948775451960193226">stated</a> that these counterfeit products, including unapproved versions of the active ingredients in Ozempic and Wegovy, which are often smuggled from unregistered foreign suppliers, primarily in China, pose a serious risk to American consumers.
The group urged the FDA to issue warning letters, pursue civil enforcement, and monitor non-compliant online retailers and compounding pharmacies selling unapproved weight-loss drugs. They also called on the agency to coordinate with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to issue an import alert and crack down on Chinese entities shipping unsafe GLP-1 medications into the U.S. Citing the urgency of the issue, lawmakers requested an update on FDA enforcement efforts by July 30.
Although the FDA declared the tirzepatide shortage resolved in October 2024—reminding compounders of legal limits on replicating approved drugs—unauthorized versions of semaglutide and tirzepatide continue to circulate. In January, Eli Lilly moved to intervene in a legal battle over compounding rules. In May, Novo Nordisk cut its 2025 sales forecast, blaming competition from compounded alternatives.
Eli Lilly has taken aggressive legal action, sending hundreds of cease-and-desist letters to telehealth firms, pharmacies, and spas marketing knockoff versions of Mounjaro and Zepbound. Yet demand for GLP-1s has fueled a booming market for copycats, often smuggled or produced under loopholes.
Though compounding was allowed during previous shortages, that exception expired once manufacturers scaled up supply. Still, some pharmacies continue producing or selling these drugs—sometimes in reduced doses to skirt regulatory scrutiny.
In May, the FDA received reports of serious adverse events tied to compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and other symptoms that in some cases required medical attention.
Price Action: LLY stock is up 0.24% at $807.36, and NVO stock is up 1.02% at $71.45 at the last check on Friday.
