After a brutal sell-off that wiped out a fifth of Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APPL#NASDAQ">APPL</a>) market value in less than a week, one of Wall Street's most prominent banks believes history is flashing a strong buy signal for the tech titan and historical data suggests <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech">they might be right.</a>



In a note shared Tuesday, Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan said Apple's risk-reward profile is now skewing favorably for long-term investors, thanks to a rare compression in the stock's valuation multiple that has previously signaled strong future returns.



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Valuation Compression Signals Opportunity For AAPL Shares</h1>



Apple shares are down 25.5% year to date and have fallen 23.5% since their last earnings report, underperforming the S&amp;P 500 index, which declined 13.7% and 16.6% in the same respective periods. 



Since President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs took affect on April 2, the iPhone maker lost 17%, more than double the decline suffered by the S&amp;P 500 index.



Geopolitical tensions around U.S.-China tariffs and delays in rolling out Apple Intelligence features on Siri have contributed to the decline.



Yet, Mohan said Apple's current forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 21 times marks a key inflection point. 



&#8220;We view AAPL&#8217;s current c.21x PE as an enhanced buying opportunity,&#8221; he said, referencing historical data that suggests Apple typically performs well after similar valuation dips.



The forward P/E ratio reflects investor expectations of a company's earnings growth. When the ratio drops below 25 times, as it has now, Apple's stock has historically delivered compelling returns in the months that follow.



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What Happens When Apple's P/E Falls Below 25?</h1>



Apple&#8217;s stock has historically delivered solid returns in the months following a forward P/E compression below 25x, as Bank of America analysis shows.



On average, shares rose 7% after three months, 8% after six months, 14% after nine months, and 17% after 12 months.



After the March 2024 P/E compression, Apple shares surged 36% in 12 months. 



The October 2023 instance yielded a 34% return over the same period. In contrast, downside risk remained relatively muted, with worst-case three-month declines of 5% to 11%.



Only once did Apple shares continue to decline 12 months after the forward P/E ratio dropped below 25x — following the April 22, 2022 event, when the stock fell 12% over the subsequent year.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s Different This Time?</h1>



Some investors may be concerned that this time is different, given growing geopolitical friction between the U.S. and China. 



With Apple heavily dependent on Chinese manufacturing and facing potential tariffs, the risk to earnings estimates remains elevated.



Still, Bank of America sees strategic levers Apple can pull to counteract these risks. 



&#8220;We note that Apple has many options to mitigate downside risk to estimates. These include: sourcing more iPhones from India, applying higher pricing in products/services, pressuring its supply chain for better economics, introducing new products at higher price points and changing cadence of product releases,&#8221; the report says.

Apple Is A 'Buying Opportunity' Again As Key Valuation Level Flashes Green, Bank Of America Says

U.S. stocks surged in early trading Tuesday after President Donald Trump hinted at progress on some trade deals with key trading partners, easing fears of global trade disruption stemming <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">from recent tariff announcements.</a>



The S&amp;P 500 index, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), surged 3% by 9:45 a.m. in New York, clawing back some of the 10% it had lost over the previous four sessions.



Other major indices also showed robust gains, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 – tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) – outperforming counterparts amid broad-based rallies in mega-cap and semiconductor stocks.

After suffering steep losses in recent sessions, investors poured back into financials, tech, and consumer discretionary, which were the top-performing sectors on Tuesday. 



Semiconductors were the standout industry group, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NASDAQ">SOXX</a>) rallying 4.5%.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Sparks Optimism With Trade Talk Blitz</h3>



The catalyst behind the rally was a lengthy post on Truth Social by Trump, in which he described a "great call" with South Korea's acting president. 



The president said South Korea is sending a "top team" to the U.S. for negotiations, calling the process &#8220;one-stop shopping&#8221; for trade and military agreements.



In a <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/08/asia/south-korea-acting-president-han-interview-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> interview, South Korea&#8217;s acting president confirmed the country would not align with China and Japan to counter U.S. tariffs. 



Seoul faces 25% tariffs under Trump's global tariff rollout. Instead, it aims to strike a bilateral agreement with the U.S. to avoid a blow to its export-driven economy.



Trump also hinted at more openness in trade negotiations with China after threatening Monday to impose a 50% tariff on top of the 54% already levied.



&#8220;China also wants to make a deal, badly, but they don&#8217;t know how to get it started,&#8221; Trump wrote.



&#8220;We are waiting for their [China's] call. It will happen!&#8221; he added, suggesting renewed momentum on U.S.-China trade talks.



Senior White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett echoed the optimism, telling Fox News that the Trump administration is focusing on countries with "large trade deficits" with the U.S. He emphasized that "fair and reciprocal trade" remains the administration&#8217;s goal.

Wall Street Soars As Trump Teases Trade Deals, Magnificent 7 Add Over $500 Billion In Market Value

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday characterized <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44677506/china-resolutely-opposes-trumps-50-tariff-threat-vows-countermeasures-as-trade-tensions-jolt-markets">China&#8217;s retaliatory trade actions</a> as a &#8220;big mistake,&#8221; saying the nation is &#8220;playing with a losing hand&#8221; in the escalating tariff conflict with the United States. 



The Details: Bessent appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box where he <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/08/treasury-secretary-bessent-says-chinas-escalation-was-big-mistake-country-playing-with-losing-hand.html">addressed</a> China's recent comments that it will "fight to the end" in a trade war with the U.S. 



"I think it was a big mistake, this Chinese escalation, because they're playing with a pair of twos," Bessent said.



&nbsp;"What do we lose by the Chinese raising tariffs on us? We export one-fifth to them of what they export to us, so that is a losing hand for them," he added.&nbsp;

Bessent's comments come after President Donald Trump said he will slap another 50% charge on Chinese imports if the 34% retaliatory tariff on U.S. goods is not withdrawn.&nbsp;



Beijing responded on Monday with the following comments:&nbsp;



"The U.S. threat to escalate tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake," the Commerce Ministry said in a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44677506/china-resolutely-opposes-trumps-50-tariff-threat-vows-countermeasures-as-trade-tensions-jolt-markets">statement translated</a> by CNBC. "China will never accept it. If the U.S. insists on its own way, China will fight to the end."



Mao Zhenhua, an economics professor at the University of Hong Kong, said that China's comments show the nation is "ready to act," as<a href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/global-economy/article/3305666/brace-impact-chinese-economist-warns-gloves-are-us-trade-war?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=cm&amp;utm_campaign=enlz-today_international&amp;utm_content=20250408&amp;tpcc=enlz-today_international&amp;UUID=69b4a47a-ff60-4b7a-b889-784cba25513c&amp;next_article_id=3305526&amp;article_id_list=3305666,3305526&amp;tc=4"> reported</a> by the South China Morning Post. 



"The probability for both sides to meet for talks or even a turnaround is very small," Mao added, warning all parties to "brace for impact".



What Else: Bessent also told CNBC that Japan is eager to negotiate on tariffs and the White House expects many other countries to come to the table as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"I think you are going to see some very large countries with large trade deficits come forward very quickly," Bessent said. "If they come to the table with solid proposals, I think we can end up with some good deals."



Markets React: All 3 major indexes opened Tuesday's session in the green as Wall Street felt some relief amid hope for tariff deals.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), tracking the S&amp;P 500, was up 3% at $519.79 and the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), tracking the Nasdaq 100 index, was up 3.3% at $437.66.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Some U.S.-listed Chinese stocks traded lower despite the broad market rally, including Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) and PDD Holdings Inc. Treasury Secretary Bessent Says China Holds 'Losing Hand' In Tariff Escalation

On Monday, the U.S. Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS) released its 2026 payment update for Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare Part D <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/weight-loss" rel="noreferrer noopener">prescription drug plans</a>.



This update, along with a final rule issued on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/contract-year-2026-policy-and-technical-changes-medicare-advantage-program-medicare-prescription-final" rel="noreferrer noopener">April 4</a>, Friday, includes routine annual changes and technical adjustments to both programs.



Under Friday&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2025-06008.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">ruling</a>, President Donald Trump&nbsp;scrapped the Biden administration&#8217;s move for Medicare coverage for anti-obesity treatments, negating the potential coverage for blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Novo Nordisk A/S&#8217; (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>) Wegovy (semaglutide) and Eli Lilly And Co&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) Zepbound (tirzepatide).

In November 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration proposed expanding Medicare and Medicaid coverage for anti-obesity medications, aiming to address the high costs that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/11/42192091/biden-proposes-medicare-medicaid-access-for-popular-weight-loss-drugs" rel="noreferrer noopener">have drawn criticism</a>.



In its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/contract-year-2026-policy-and-technical-changes-medicare-advantage-program-medicare-prescription-final" rel="noreferrer noopener">fact sheet</a>, the CMS said it &#8220;is not finalizing certain provisions at this time,&#8221; including Part D coverage of anti-obesity medications. &#8220;CMS may address these proposals in future rulemaking, as appropriate,&#8221; according to the fact sheet.



The Biden administration estimated the change could have extended coverage to an additional 3.4 million adults. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 42% of U.S. adults are classified as obese.



As per a media report in March 2024, Medicare may extend coverage for&nbsp;Novo Nordisk&#8217;s weight-loss drug Wegovy (semaglutide) to certain members with a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/03/37876911/wegovys-success-medicare-contemplates-covering-novo-nordisks-semaglutide-for-heart-health" rel="noreferrer noopener">history of heart disease</a>.&nbsp;



The CMS revealed that Medicare Part D drug-benefit plans, overseen by private insurers, could potentially cover anti-obesity medications under specific circumstances.&nbsp;



In October 2024, the Congressional Budget Office released a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2024-10/60441-medicare-coverage-obesity.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> warning that authorizing anti-obesity treatments for Medicare coverage could increase federal spending by around $35 billion from 2026 to 2034.



The report added that direct federal costs of covering weight loss drugs would increase from $1.6 billion in 2026 to $7.1 billion in 2034.



Relative to the direct costs of the medications, total savings from beneficiaries&#8221; improved health would be small—less than $50 million in 2026 and rising to $1.0 billion in 2034.



In January this year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) unveiled the selection of 15 additional drugs covered under Medicare Part D for price negotiations, building on efforts to reduce&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43062779/popular-ozempic-wegovy-selected-for-next-round-of-medicare-drug-price-negotiations" rel="noreferrer noopener">prescription drug costs</a>. The list included Novo Nordisk&#8217;s Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy.



Price Action: At the last check Tuesday, LLY stock was up 3.18% to $746.78, and NVO stock is down 0.41% to $63.38.

That sustainability question is colliding with bearish technicals. Nvidia stock is now trading below all key short-term and long-term simple moving averages (SMAs) — an unambiguous &#8216;Bearish&#8217; signal from a technical standpoint:

"In addition, the increasing competitive landscape combined with the overhang of possible further tariff and regulatory restrictions on U.S. chipmakers also could weigh on the stock," Ed added.

Amy Compton-Phillips, the company's new executive vice president and chief medical officer, effective&nbsp;May 19, will also report to David&nbsp;Joyner.



Dr. Compton-Phillips was most recently chief physician executive of Press Ganey, a health care performance improvement company.



Prior to Press Ganey, Dr. Compton-Phillips was the president and chief clinical officer at Providence Health &amp; Services, a health care system, responsible for clinical operations and care including improving health, care, and value outcomes delivered by the system's hospitals, clinics, and caregivers. From 1985 to 2007, she held positions of increasing responsibility at Kaiser Permanente.



In February, CVS Health reported fourth-quarter sales of $97.71 billion, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/02/43709040/cvs-health-gains-momentum-after-q4-performance-analyst-upgrades-stock" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $97.19 billion</a>.



Total revenues increased 4.2%, driven by growth in the Health Care Benefits and Pharmacy &amp; Consumer Wellness segments, partially offset by a decline in the&nbsp;Health Services segment.



The Medical benefit ratio increased from 88.5% to 94.8% compared to the prior year, driven by increased utilization, the unfavorable impact of the previously disclosed decline in the company's Medicare Advantage star ratings for the 2024 payment year, and the impact of higher acuity in Medicaid.

CVS Health Appoints Former UPS And Pepsi Exec As Finance Chief, Stock Soars

Marvell Technology Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRVL#NASDAQ">MRVL</a>) is making a clean break from its automotive ambitions, and JPMorgan's Harlan Sur thinks that's exactly the kind of focus <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/MRVL/news">investors should be betting on</a>.



Following the company's $2.5 billion sale of its Automotive Ethernet business to Infineon Technologies AG, Sur reiterated an Overweight rating and placed a $130 price target by December 2025, implying a 155% upside from Friday's close at $51.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">AI Gets The Green Light</h2>



While growing fast, the automotive Ethernet business isn't expected to account for more than 2-3% of Marvell's revenue mix in 2026.



Meanwhile, the company's AI and data center portfolio is growing at a 30-40% annual clip, notes Sur. In short, this isn't about dumping a promising segment &#8211; it's about clearing the runway for a higher-growth flight path.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">High Valuation, Low Drag</h2>



The deal was struck at a 10.5x sales multiple, a healthy premium for a business expected to bring in $225 to $250 million in FY26 with 60% gross margins. 



Sur says the transaction could be slightly accretive to earnings &#8211; boosting Marvell's EPS by 5 to 10 cents per share—especially if the cash is channeled into stock buybacks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Clean Break, Clear Strategy</h2>



Marvell's exit from the auto space follows its October quarter restructuring, where it began shifting investments away from enterprise networking, carrier infrastructure and automotive.



The company is now focused on AI and accelerated computing &#8211; a theme Sur sees as key to unlocking long-term value.



Marvell may have built the auto business from scratch over eight years, but with a $2.5 billion payday and a 155% potential upside, the real race is in AI, and Marvell just hit the gas.

Marvell Plays AI Hardball: Divestiture Sparks 155% Upside, Says Analyst

U.S. stock futures rose on Tuesday following a volatile day of trading on Monday that led the indices to close on a mixed note. Futures of major benchmark indices were higher in premarket.



The sell-off that began on Thursday has driven the Nasdaq into bear market territory, whereas the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones continue to be in the correction zone.



As China&#8217;s Commerce Ministry said that it "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44677506/china-resolutely-opposes-trumps-50-tariff-threat-vows-countermeasures-as-trade-tensions-jolt-markets?_gl=1kzrvdi_gcl_auNzQyMjgxNjUuMTczNzYwNzI4NQ.._gaZGVsZXRlZA.._ga_V7ZK73W7N0&#x2A;MTc0NDEwMDY0OS4yNDkuMC4xNzQ0MTAwNjQ5LjAuMC4w">resolutely opposes</a>" U.S. President Donald Trump‘s threat to impose additional 50% duties on Chinese imports, the ministry vowed to take countermeasures to protect its interests, intensifying trade tensions that have already triggered market turmoil.



Major indices were significantly down from recent highs as of Tuesday. The S&amp;P 500 was 17.65% lower, the Nasdaq 100 was down 21.56%, and the Dow Jones declined 15.77%, following a week of tariff-driven selloffs.



The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.17% and the two-year bond was at 3.77%. However, the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections showed markets pricing a 71.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, advanced in premarket on Tuesday. The SPY was up 1.13% to $510.07, while the QQQ declined 1.09% to $428.30, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.



Cues From Last Session:



Real estate, materials, and utilities sectors led Monday&#8217;s S&amp;P 500 decline, pulling the U.S. stocks to a mixed close, with the Dow Jones falling for its third consecutive session.



Conversely, communication services and information technology stocks bucked the trend, closing higher.



Within tech, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares fell roughly 2.6%, while Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) lost 3.7%. Market volatility stemmed from Trump&#8217;s Truth Social post, threatening 50% U.S. tariffs on China following China&#8217;s 34% retaliatory tariffs.



The Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reported a 0.7% month-over-month drop in March, consistent with February&#8217;s decline.



The Dow Jones index slumped 349 points or 0.91% to 37,965.60, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell 0.23% to 5,062.25. Nasdaq Composite bucked the trend to end 0.099% higher at 15,603.26, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, tumbled 0.92% to 1,810.14.

A dramatic 118% surge in the VIX over three days marks its fifth-largest such spike. Creative Planning&#8217;s Charlie Bilello&#8216;s data shows that the two larger three-day VIX spikes of 176% in 2018 and 167% in 2015, preceded strong S&amp;P 500 returns over the following one to five years, leading Bilello to conclude that &#8220;high volatility/fear = opportunity&#8221;.

U.S. President Donald Trump doubled down on his aggressive trade tariff strategy on Monday while signaling openness to potential "fair deals" with several countries during a high-profile meeting at the White House with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/israel">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.</a>



Netanyahu announced that Israel is committed to eliminating all trade barriers and tariffs with the United States, pledging to erase Israel's trade surplus and deepen bilateral commerce.



"We want to eliminate the trade deficits with the U.S.," Netanyahu said. "We will eliminate any trade barriers. We are going to eliminate the tariffs—and rapidly."



Trump praised the Israeli leader's announcement but didn't offer reciprocal tariff reductions, instead promising, "We'll take good care of our dear friends." 



Still, the president made it clear that no country would be exempt from the broader reset in America's global trade posture.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs Here To Stay And Possibly Permanently</h3>



"We have been ripped off by a lot of countries over the years," Trump said. "We can't do it anymore."



Asked whether he would consider a pause in tariffs, Trump firmly replied, "We are not looking into that. We want to sign fair deals with countries." 



He indicated that the tariffs are not just staying—they may become permanent unless foreign governments meet U.S. demands. "Virtually every country wants to negotiate," Trump said. "They are all offering things to us because they are experiencing a lot of hurt."



Trump portrayed the current global environment as a unique opportunity to restructure the U.S. economy through aggressive trade actions. "We have an opportunity to reset the table on trade. It's the only chance we have."



According to Trump, the United States was the richest and strongest power on earth between 1870 and 1913 &#8211; a period he credited to the nation's reliance on high tariffs and absence of income taxes, which he suggested created the ideal foundation for industrial dominance.



"If there are no fair deals, nations can't participate in the U.S. economy," Trump warned. "We're going to get fair deals with every nation."



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Japan And China Face Sharp Criticism</h3>



Several nations were singled out for criticism, with Japan and China receiving particular attention. Trump noted ongoing trade imbalances with Japan, suggesting that while Japanese vehicles dominate the U.S. market, American cars still face significant restrictions entering Japan.



With respect to China, the tone shifted from frustration to confrontation.



Trump accused China of applying tariffs "34% above what their stupid tariff rate is" and warned that a 50% U.S. surcharge would be added on top of existing tariffs if Beijing does not reduce its barriers by April 8.



He called China "essentially a closed country" but added that he hoped to maintain good relations with President Xi Jinping.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The European Union Targeted For ‘Unfair' Trade Practices</h3>



As for the EU, Trump dismissed its zero-for-zero tariff proposal as insufficient. "It's not enough," he said.



&#8220;The EU was formed to damage the U.S. They took advantage of us." He cited a $350 billion trade deficit with the bloc and accused it of blocking U.S. goods through monetary and non-monetary tariffs.



"They don't take our cars, our agricultural products, they don't take anything," Trump said.



He further criticized EU regulatory standards, describing them as covert trade barriers. "They come up with rules and standards—non-monetary tariffs—which block us," Trump argued, while also accusing European officials of manipulating their currency to gain export advantages.



He indicated that energy will be a critical weapon in future trade negotiations. "They need our energy, and they will commit to buy our energy. We have more energy than any other country on earth," Trump said.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Iran's Nuclear Program And A Clear Red Line</h3>



While the spotlight remained on tariffs, Trump also briefly addressed national security, particularly Iran. Asked whether the U.S. would consider military action to stop Iran's nuclear program, Trump replied with a warning that hinted at the use of force. 



"If the talks aren't successful with Iran, I think Iran is going to be in great danger," he said. "They can't have a nuclear weapon. That's all there is."

These 5 S&P 500 Winners Held Strong In Q1 — Can The Rally Continue?

Following the Trump Administration announcing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs" rel="noreferrer noopener">wide-ranging tariffs</a> on all imported products, with rates starting at 10% and going higher depending on the country, Needham published last Thursday, Friday, and Monday&#8217;s initial reactions to their coverage areas on who has the most exposure.



Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) stock <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/price-target/25/04/44651515/apple-analyst-holds-the-line-after-300-billion-rout-what-could-turn-stock-around" rel="noreferrer noopener">fell nearly 10% Thursday</a>, losing about $300 billion of market cap, owing to new tariffs. However, unless Apple gets an exemption, analyst Laura Martin calculated that Apple&#8217;s adjusted EPS will fall by over $2, down 28% from the analyst&#8217;s current fiscal 2025 EPS estimate of $7.32.

By implication, Wall Street is betting there is a 30% chance Apple will get an exemption because Trump gave it an exemption in 2018.



The company committed to spending $500 billion in the U.S. over 4 years, creating 20,000 new jobs, and it is the most iconic U.S. brand in the world.



EPS down 28% is not the worst case. China retaliates against the U.S. by banning all or some Apple product sales in China, which were 17% of Apple&#8217;s total sales in fiscal 2024, which can pose a bigger threat.



Martin noted that DoubleVerify Holdings, Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DV#NYSE">DV</a>) business model is based on a fixed fee, not a revenue share of ad spending. The analyst noted that 100% of DoubleVerify&#8217;s revenue is virtual.



As per Martin, 30% of the company revenue is from outside the U.S., which is yet to be impacted. DoubleVerify verifies advertising in both Walled Gardens and the Open Internet, so if advertising happens anywhere, DoubleVerify should earn its fees.



DoubleVerify is well diversified across verticals, without significant exposure to industrials, autos, or durables, which are the most at risk from tariffs and fundamental growth drivers like new customers from moat, more up-sells of additional products to existing customers, incremental traction on DoubleVerify&#8217;s Meta pre-bid product, and new business wins could offset tariff-related weakness.&nbsp;&nbsp;



The impact of new tariffs on Viant Technology Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DSP#NASDAQ">DSP</a>) is 100% advantageous (i.e., virtual), with no hard goods. Viant Technology is missing the three most tariff-exposed ad categories: industrials, durables, and national autos.



Viant Technology&#8217;s largest ad categories are U.S. healthcare, U.S. universities, education, and travel/hospitality. Together, local autos plus CPG were less than 20% of total ad revenue in 2024, Martin estimated. So far, prior tariffs have only negatively impacted ad spending on avocados from Mexico.



Price Action: AAPL stock is trading lower by 4.89% to $179.26 at the last check on Monday.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conspiracy Theories of A Self-Engineered Recession Emerge</h3>



Fueling the speculative fire are political theories that the Trump administration may be intentionally inducing a recession. 



The logic? Lower inflation, lower interest rates and stronger control over monetary conditions.



On Monday, Trump took to Truth Social with a bold message: "Oil prices are down, interest rates are down (the slow moving Fed should cut rates!), food prices are down, there is NO INFLATION." He also emphasized the revenue generated from tariffs, claiming the U.S. is "bringing in Billions of Dollars a week from the abusing countries."



Last Friday, Trump openly urged Fed Chair Jerome Powell to act swiftly. "This would be a PERFECT time for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell to cut Interest Rates. He is always &#8216;late,&#8217; but he could now change his image, and quickly."



Peter Navarro, former trade adviser, downplayed the recession fears entirely, stating, "Any discussion of recession seems silly at this moment."



Larry Tentarelli, chief technical strategist at Blue Chip Daily Trend Report, now sees a 50% base-case probability for a 2025 recession — especially if the "tariff news cycle remains unchanged." 



Tentarelli warns that the absence of a so-called "Fed put" — the idea that the Fed will always step in to stabilize markets — leaves the economy more exposed than usual.



Goldman Sachs has revised its recession odds up to 45%, while JPMorgan has gone even higher, projecting a 60% chance.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Yardeni Pushes Back On Political Manipulation Narrative</h3>



Not all agree with the conspiracy framing. Market veteran Ed Yardeni dismissed the theory that Trump is engineering a downturn to drive rates lower. 



Still, he outlined how the idea has gained traction. First, a recession could weaken the dollar, stimulate exports and shrink the U.S. trade deficit.



Subsequently, Trump's tariffs could push manufacturers back to U.S. soil while reducing the foreign demand for American agricultural products.



In the end, lower inflation from these forces could justify a looser Fed policy and potentially lower mortgage rates.



Still, Yardeni warned that even if these theories are unfounded, the consequences of poor economic management are real and potentially devastating.



&#8220;We believe that Wall Street and Main Street prosper and suffer together. The Trump administration disagrees,&#8221; he said in a note Monday.



The S&amp;P 500 index—as tracked by the&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>)—has lost 13% since Trump&#8217;s tariff announcement last Wednesday, notching one of the deepest and fastest selloffs in modern history.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stock Market Exposure Raises Stakes For American Households</h3>



The stock market's vulnerability is perhaps the most immediate concern. According to Gallup's latest poll, 62% of U.S. adults hold some form of stock market investment. 



That figure jumps to 87% among upper-income Americans earning more than $100,000 a year, while 65% of middle-income earners also have market exposure. Among lower-income households earning below $40,000, the rate falls to 25%.



Data from the Federal Reserve shows that U.S. households and nonprofit organizations now hold a record 43.5% of their financial assets in equities. This heavy concentration means that a sharp drop in stock prices could have outsized effects on consumer spending and confidence. 



At the end of 2024, American households held $46.8 trillion in corporate equities and mutual funds. Of that, Baby Boomers alone controlled $25.2 trillion. A 20% decline in equity prices would wipe out $9.4 trillion in household wealth — including $5 trillion from Baby Boomer portfolios, many of which are meant to fund retirements.



This sets up a dangerous dynamic: if equity markets keep falling, the resulting negative wealth effect could lead to a deep contraction in consumption, hitting middle- and lower-income households the hardest.



The confluence of economic signals, political pressure and financial market stress is pushing the Federal Reserve closer to a moment of reckoning. 



Whether the recession is engineered or not, the damage is mounting.
