Activist investor Dan Loeb&#8216;s Third Point LLC <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/dan-loeb">adjusted its portfolio</a> in the third quarter of 2024, trimming stakes in several major companies, including technology and utility stocks.
PCG: Third Point reduced shares in one of the leading natural gas and electric energy companies, Pacific Gas &amp; Electric Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCG#NYSE">PCG</a>), to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514624005927/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml" rel="noreferrer noopener">49.7 </a>million in the third quarter of FY24 from 56.9 million shares in the third quarter of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514623004511/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml" rel="noreferrer noopener">FY23</a>.
Although the investor gradually lowered shares in the company throughout the period, the stock is still the fund's largest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/25/01/42788070/hedge-fund-giant-dan-loebs-pge-bet-beats-market" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">holding as of Sept. 30, 2024.</a>
The stock declined 4.4% in the last year, underperforming the Vanguard Utilities Index Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VPU#NYSE">VPU</a>), which has&nbsp;gained 29.2%&nbsp;over the same time frame.
Importantly, the company reported a third-quarter adjusted EPS of 37 cents, exceeding analysts' expectations of 33 cents, but revenue of $5.94 billion, falling short of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/25/01/42788070/hedge-fund-giant-dan-loebs-pge-bet-beats-market" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the&nbsp;consensus estimate of $6.61 billion</a>.
The company will report fourth-quarter <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">results on Feb. 13, 2025</a>.

AMZN: Apart from this, the investor cut shares in technology giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) to 3.7 million in the third quarter of FY24 from 4.9 million in the third quarter of FY23.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Notably, Third Point increased its AMZN shares in the <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514624002645/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first </a>quarter of 2024 but lowered the number in the third quarter of 2024.
Amazon&#8217;s share escalated 40.51% in the last year, outperforming the Fidelity MSCI Consumer Discretionary Index ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDIS#NYSE">FDIS</a>), which has&nbsp;surged 29.81%&nbsp;over the same time frame.
Notably, Amazon reported the company posted mixed&nbsp;second-quarter&nbsp;FY24 results and gave soft third-quarter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40131294" rel="noreferrer noopener">guidance in August 2024</a>.
On Aug. 5, 2024 the company&#8217;s shares dropped to a six-month low of $151.61 in intraday trading, breaching the 21-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages.
MSFT: Moreover, Third Point significantly curtailed shares in software giant Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) to 870,000 shares in third-quarter FY24 from 2.2 million in third-quarter FY23.
The stock gained 2.4% over the past year, lagging the&nbsp;&nbsp;iShares U.S. Technology ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IYW#NYSE">IYW</a>), which rose 22.9% in the same period.
META: The investor slashed shares by half in Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) to 545,000 shares in third-quarter FY24 from 1.1 million in <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514624004004/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the </a>second quarter of 2024.
The company&#8217;s share jumped 51.6% in the last year, outperforming the iShares Global Comm Services ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IXP#NYSE">IXP</a>), which upped 28.8%&nbsp;over the same time frame.

Google cut ~12,000 jobs in 2023, affecting ~6% of its workforce. Meta, since November 2022, fired ~21,000 employees, accounting for 25% of its staff. Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) eliminated 27,000 roles in 2023.
GOOGL stock surged over 30% in the last 12 months. Google Wants To Indulge In Workforce Training and Global Policy Discussions On AI

On Wednesday, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) and Louisiana Economic Development (LED) disclosed plans for a $10 billion AI data center in northeast Louisiana, marking a major investment in the state&#8217;s innovation ecosystem.
Set to be Meta&#8217;s largest global facility at 4 million square feet, the data center in Richland Parish is slated to begin site work in December and expects construction to extend through 2030.
The Richland Parish Data Center will be Meta&#8217;s largest facility globally, designed to handle vast data processing needs for AI workloads.
As part of its advanced infrastructure, it will support Meta&#8217;s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.
The AI data center in Richland Parish is expected to create over 500 direct jobs, with LED projecting an additional 1,000 indirect roles, totaling more than 1,500 new jobs in the region. At the construction peak, the 2,250-acre site will employ approximately 5,000 workers, the LED said in the press release.
Meta plans to benefit from Louisiana&#8217;s new incentive program under Act 730, which provides a sales and use tax rebate on data center equipment purchases or leases for qualifying projects.
The company has also pledged over $200 million for local infrastructure upgrades, including roads and water systems.
Meta will work with Entergy to add 1,500 MW of renewable energy to the grid, matching the data center&#8217;s energy use with 100% clean power.
Kevin Janda, Meta&#8217;s Director of Data Center Strategy, stated, &#8220;Richland Parish&nbsp;in&nbsp;Louisiana&nbsp;is an outstanding location for Meta to call home for a number of reasons. It provides great access to infrastructure, a reliable grid, a business-friendly climate, and wonderful community partners that have helped us move this project forward.&#8221;
Governor&nbsp;Jeff Landry&nbsp;said, &#8220;Meta&#8217;s investment establishes the region as an anchor in&nbsp;Louisiana&#8217;s&nbsp;rapidly expanding tech sector, revitalizes one of our state&#8217;s beautiful rural areas, and creates opportunities for&nbsp;Louisiana&nbsp;workers to fill high-paying jobs of the future.&#8221;

Meta Readies $10 Billion AI Data Center in Louisiana, Its Largest Facility Globally

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) plans to build a massive fiber-optic subsea cable and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/data">become its sole owner</a>.
What Happened: The cable would reportedly span 40,000-kilometers and give Meta a dedicated pipe for data traffic worldwide.
The cable&#8217;s planned route will span from the east coast of the U.S. to India via South Africa and then to the west coast of the U.S. from India via Australia.

Sunil Tagare, a subsea cable expert, told <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2024/11/29/meta-plans-to-build-a-10b-subsea-cable-spanning-the-world-sources-say/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TechCrunch</a> that Meta would proceed with the plan with a budget of $2 billion and gradually cross $10 billion after years of work.
The company&#8217;s properties and users account&nbsp;for 10% of all fixed and 22% of all mobile traffic. Meta&#8217;s artificial intelligence investments will likely pose additional positive drivers.
Santosh Janardhan, the company&#8217;s head of global infrastructure and co-head of engineering, oversees Meta&#8217;s infrastructure work.
Why It Matters: Meta is the second-biggest driver of internet usage globally, thanks to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Meta Weighs Sole Ownership Of A $10 Billion Subsea Cable Project

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), the parent company of Google, reported stellar third-quarter earnings that not only beat Wall Street&#8217;s expectations but also drove the combined market cap of the &#8220;Magnificent Seven&#8221; tech giants to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/magnificent-7">an unprecedented $16.8 trillion.</a>
Alphabet's earnings per share came in at $2.12, a 37% increase over the same quarter last year, far exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.55, according to data from <a href="https://bzresearch.myclickfunnels.com/benzinga-pro-content-webinar-registration/?utm_source=BZprocontent103024&amp;t=be2bearmibe3na1">Benzinga Pro.</a>
Revenue reached $88.27 billion, representing a 15% year-over-year rise and surpassing the $86.39 billion that analysts anticipated.

As a result of these impressive numbers, Alphabet's shares rallied over 6% by mid-morning on Wednesday, marking its best trading session since April. 
The stock price increase translated into a more than $150 billion rise in Alphabet&#8217;s market capitalization, which now stands at $2.239 trillion.
Alphabet's surge also gave a substantial lift to the combined valuation of the Magnificent Seven, pushing it to a record-high $16.8 trillion.

(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>).
Ethan Zuckerman, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, filed a suit against the tech giant as part of a quest to release a browser extension called Unfollow Everything 2.0.
The extension, which is being developed by Zuckerman, would allow users to unfollow their friends, groups, and pages in one fell swoop, and, in doing so, to effectively turn off their newsfeed, according to court documents.
&#8220;Users who download the tool would be free to use the platform without the feed, or to curate the feed by refollowing only those friends and groups whose posts they really want to see,&#8221; the suit said.

Facebook already allows users to manually unfollow friends, groups, and pages one at a time, but &#8220;doing so for hundreds or even thousands of friends, groups, and pages is cumbersome and time-consuming,&#8221; the suit stated.
&#8220;Unfollow Everything 2.0 streamlines the process, while protecting user privacy,&#8221; it said.
Meta has filed a motion to dismiss the suit, according to a company spokesperson.
"This suit is baseless, and was filed over a hypothetical browser extension that has not even been built.&#8221;

Google, which is owned tech giant Alphabet Inc. Alphabet's Google Faces Revived Chrome Lawsuit After Appeals Court Ruling

Trian Fund Management, an activist investor hedge fund co-founded by billionaire Nelson Peltz, still owns a piece of Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) after reportedly selling <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/24/05/39078534/activist-investor-nelson-peltz-sells-entire-disney-stake-for-1b-after-losing-proxy-battle">its entire position</a> in late May, according to regulatory filings.
A quarterly 13-F report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on May 15 shows that New York-based Trian had 32.4 million shares in the company worth a total of $3.96 billion during the first quarter.
A Thursday filing revealed that Trian sold 29.7 million shares worth $3.69 billion at some point in the second quarter. But the hedge fund still owns almost 2.65 million shares worth nearly $263 million.
Trian reportedly sold <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/05/39095549/the-rich-get-richer-how-one-billionaire-lost-but-still-made-hundreds-of-millions">its entire stake</a> in Disney at $120 a share as of May 29. The sale came after Peltz unsuccessfully tried to oust Disney CEO Bob Iger at an April shareholder meeting.

Peltz reportedly made $1 billion from the divestment, despite losing the activist battle against Disney.
The two 13-Fs also showed that Trian sold 539,884 shares of Ferguson Plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FERG#NYSE">FERG</a>) that were worth more than $166 million during the second quarter. The deal left the firm with 1.95 million shares worth $378 million.
Trian also bought 3.55 million shares of UHaul for $78.6 million, 5.36 million shares of Solventum Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOLV#NYSE">SOLV</a>) for $284 million and 470,000 shares of Rentokil Initial plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RTO#NYSE">RTO</a>) for $13.9 million. It sold 1.22 million shares of Sysco Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SYY#NYSE">SYY</a>) for $99.3 million.

Disney Still Makes Up A Chunk Of Peltz's Trian Fund Despite $4B Exit, Records Show

Rafal Brzoska, a Polish billionaire who founded Polish locker company InPost, and his wife, Omenaa Mensah, plan to<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40298698/mark-zuckerbergs-meta-platforms-triumphs-over-independent-presidential-candidate-robert-kennedy-jr-s"> file a lawsuit </a>against Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) for allegedly putting fake advertisements on Facebook and Instagram that feature his face.
Brzoska said they have not yet chosen a jurisdiction to file the planned suit, which also alleged that both social media sites are circulating false information about his wife, Reuters reported.
Brzoska&#8217;s legal action would be the latest attempt worldwide to hold Meta responsible for ads that consistently show up on the sites despite user complaints.
Meta said it removes false ads from its sites as it becomes aware of them and works with local authorities to deter scammers, but Brzoska said he told Meta about the issue in early July, but the company still has not fixed the problem.
&#8220;Scammers use every platform available to them to defraud people and constantly adapt to evade getting caught. Scam content breaks our rules and we remove it when we find it," Meta told Reuters.

Brzoska told Reuters that he and his wife &#8220;are considering absolutely all scenarios&#8221; for jurisdiction and may carry out the suit in the U.S. if they are met with inaction in Europe.
He said they would demand in the suit that Meta stop benefiting from promoting content which violates their rights and donate to charity an amount of money matching the amount of ad revenues Meta received by spreading the false information.
Last week, Poland&#8217;s Personal Data Protection Office told Meta Platforms Ireland Limited to stop displaying false advertisements that used real data and images of Brzoska and his wife on Facebook and Instagram in Poland for three months.
