On Monday, Lockheed Martin Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LMT#NYSE">LMT</a>) secured several major defense contracts, solidifying its role as a key player in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Contracts/Contract/Article/4016173/" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. military and allied operations</a>.
The company received a $3.37 billion modification to an existing agreement, expanding logistics support for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter program.
This initiative encompasses ground maintenance, pilot training, supply chain management, and depot activities for the Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers, and other partners.

Work will occur in Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and California, with completion anticipated by December 2025.
Lockheed Martin has also won a $335.7 million contract modification for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. This deal supports various 2025 activities, including aircraft induction, field and depot site support, and specialized equipment procurement.
The funds come from multiple sources, including Navy and Air Force procurement budgets and contributions from FMS customers and program partners. Work will primarily occur in Fort Worth, Texas, and will likely conclude by the end of 2025.
The company&#8217;s Moorestown, New Jersey division secured a $10.5 million contract to continue engineering and development for the AEGIS Combat System.
The project, focusing on delivering advanced weapon system capabilities for the Navy&#8217;s FFG 62 program, will run until March 2025. Separately, Lockheed Martin&#8217;s Orlando, Florida unit received a $71.6 million contract to provide depot-level support for Apache attack helicopters, with an estimated completion date of December 2025.
Lockheed Martin stock gained 7% year-to-date. Elon Musk&#8217;s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/12/42525698/as-elon-musk-takes-on-lockheed-martin-made-f-35s-experts-question-feasibility-of-replacing-manned-fighter-jets-with-drones" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent push for drone warfare</a> over traditional manned aircraft has sparked debate among experts regarding its feasibility.
Musk criticized Lockheed Martin&#8217;s F-35 stealth fighter program, advocating for the use of drone swarms, which he showcased in a video, and questioning the continued investment in piloted jets. Musk, a Donald Trump ally, is a co-lead of Trump&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Goldman Sachs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/12/42468190/defense-stocks-face-headwinds-as-trumps-doge-targets-spending-cuts-goldman-sachs-downgrades-general-dynamics-to-sell" rel="noreferrer noopener">maintained a Sell rating</a> on Lockheed Martin, citing concerns about the F-35 program, which DOGE leadership has identified as a potential cost-cutting target.
Analyst Noah Poponak highlighted risks to margins and spending, noting that Lockheed&#8217;s free cash flow is projected to remain flat over the coming years. Poponak also pointed out the stock&#8217;s high valuation, trading at 23 times estimated 2025 earnings, which he considers a steep premium given these challenges.

Exchange-traded funds are rewriting the financial playbook, with 2024 marking a historic <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">year for the industry.</a>
From record-breaking flows to innovative fund launches, Bank of America detailed $1.6 trillion in ETF inflows this year in a new note. The global ETF market has grown to a staggering $15.1 trillion in assets under management. 
Additionally, ETF launches hit an all-time high of 1,485 in 2024, and institutional ownership continues to surge, cementing ETFs as the cornerstone of modern investment strategies. 
Here's how the ETF ecosystem is evolving — and why it matters.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Record Year for ETF Growth</h3>
The numbers speak for themselves: over the last five years, the global ETF market has grown at a robust 19% annualized rate, amassing more than $15 trillion in assets under management. 
In total, 15,866 ETFs have been created since 1993, with 2024 alone contributing 1,485 of those — a record for both active and U.S.-listed ETFs.
Institutional investors, retail traders and even cash-strapped mutual funds are gravitating toward ETFs for their liquidity, tax efficiency and cost advantages.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Rise of Active ETFs: A Balancing Act</h3>
While ETFs have historically been dominated by passive strategies, active ETFs are making their presence known. Active funds accounted for 18% of total inflows in 2024, signaling a growing appetite for alpha strategies.
Still, passive funds remain the kingpin, representing over 50% of equity fund assets by AUM. 
In fact, 93% of ETFs track some type of index, but the allure of active management is pushing innovation. 
Investors seeking more active strategies in passive funds are also driving mutual fund-to-ETF conversions. According to Bank of America, this trend is likely to accelerate in the coming years as mutual funds struggle to remain relevant.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">SPY vs. VOO: New ETF Champion in the Making?</h3>
The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) remains the largest and most actively traded ETF since its inception in 1993. But its throne is being challenged.
Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) has a 6.5-basis-point lower expense ratio compared to SPY and could potentially surpass it in AUM by 2026.
In 2024, VOO registered more than six times the inflows obtained by SPY.

Nvidia Takes Short-Lived Lead Over Apple In Valuation

Vanguard has surpassed BlackRock as the manager of the world&#8217;s second-largest ETF. 
What Happened: Vanguard&#8217;s S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) has edged past BlackRock&#8217;s iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>) in terms of assets. As of last Friday, VOO held $540.76 billion, slightly exceeding IVV&#8217;s $540.66 billion, based on Morningstar data. This marks a notable change, as VOO was $58 billion behind IVV at the start of 2022, Financial Times<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/3067c4ce-8d0e-4307-8b1a-a7edd21639ff?ref=biztoc.com"> reported</a> on Tuesday.
VOO is now trailing the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) by $50 billion, which remains the largest ETF globally. Vanguard&#8217;s broader S&amp;P 500 vehicle holds $1.28 trillion in assets, ranking as the second-largest investment fund globally. Meanwhile, the net assets held by BlackRock&#8217;s IVV ETF is $540.10 Billion. 
As per <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>, as of Monday, the net asset value (NAV) of year-to-date (YTD) returns of VOO has risen 21.10%. On the other hand, the NAV of YTD returns of IVV has been higher by&nbsp;21.43%. 
Both Vanguard and BlackRock&#8217;s ETFs charge an annual fee of 3 basis points, attracting retail investors. The ETF market has seen substantial growth, with assets exceeding $10 trillion in the U.S., nearly doubling over four years, according to ETFGI.

The discussions began during a meeting between Nvidia chief Jensen Huang and Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

Officials are assessing costs, benefits, and potential applications with sectors such as the Indian Railways&#8217; safety system, Kavach.
The custom AI chip could also support Indian startups, businesses, and public sector initiatives as part of the government&#8217;s AI mission.
Nvidia&#8217;s partnership with India could involve multiple players, with design partners like Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) or Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) handling core architecture.
At the same time, Indian entities such as the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) would customize the final layers for local applications.
Huang sees India as a crucial partner in the AI sector, emphasizing the importance of adding value to domestic resources rather than exporting raw data.

Nvidia Accelerates Global Growth, Eyes AI Chip Development in India and Expansion in Thailand

Top economist David Rosenberg, known for predicting the 2008 market crash and recession, is sounding the alarm about a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39743338/s-p-500-to-plunge-more-than-20-near-term-top-economist-breaks-down-broader-market-vs-small-cap-d">potential stock market crash</a>.
Mega-Bubble: In recent notes to Rosenberg Research clients, the market bear warned that the current market is in a &#8220;mega-bubble&#8221; and cautioned investors against chasing momentum.&nbsp;
&#8220;When this mega-bubble pops, it will be spectacular,&#8221; Rosenberg wrote on Oct. 18. &#8220;This is no time to chase momentum or the herd mentality.&#8221;
Warning Signs: Rosenberg cited high valuations, investor positioning and sentiment as warning signs. The most recent <a href="https://archive.ph/o/5xPqB/https://www.aaii.com/latest/article/239694-aaii-sentiment-survey-pessimism-spikes">AAII Sentiment Survey</a>, which tracks investor sentiment, shows 45.5% of its respondents characterized themselves as bullish, above its historical average of 37.5% for the 49th time in 50 weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&#8220;This is the mother of all momentum-driven stock markets,&#8221; he wrote in an October 9 note.

Rosenberg warned the S&amp;P 500 is at least 25% higher than fundamentals suggest it should be with stock prices outpacing earnings growth and analyst EPS revisions trending to the downside.&nbsp;
The economist is bearish on the economy as well as the markets and anticipates a recession on the horizon. Rosenberg pointed to emerging signs of economic weakness, including a rise in unemployment and decreased job openings.&nbsp;
Rosenberg's warnings come at a time when the S&amp;P 500 has seen significant gains, up 23% year-to-date following gains of 22% in 2023. Investors can track the S&amp;P 500 through <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/24/10/41407647/spy-reaches-600-billion-in-assets-oldest-us-etf-hits-milestone-as-all-time-highs-conti">funds that track</a> the index's movements, including the SPDR S&amp;P 500 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), known as the "Spy," and the iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>). 
Rosenberg cautioned investors against chasing the "overvalued" market and advised clients to preserve capital.&nbsp;

Market 'Mega-Bubble' Set To Pop, Says Top Economist Who Called 2008 Crash

The first U.S.-based exchange-traded fund hit a major milestone on Thursday, following recent all-time highs for the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41293799/s-p-500-dow-jones-hit-new-record-highs-as-financial-stocks-soar-on-upbeat-earnings">fund tracking the S&amp;P 500.</a>
What Happened: Launched <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/24/01/36722143/happy-birthday-s-p-500-spy-etf-if-you-invested-1-000-in-spy-at-launch-heres-how-much-y">in January 1993,</a> the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) is the oldest U.S.-based ETF and the largest by assets under management.
The ETF reached the $600 billion assets under management milestone Thursday, according to data from <a href="https://etfdb.com/etf/SPY/#etf-ticker-profile">ETFDB</a>.
Managed by State Street Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STT#NYSE">STT</a>), the ETF was launched with seed funding of $6.5 million after being approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 1993, after several years of the fund's application.
Initial interest in the ETF was poor and the fund was almost closed before investors came around to the idea of using ETFs as investment vehicles.
The success of the SPY ETF led to other financial institutions launching similar ETFs that track the S&amp;P 500 Index, one of the largest and most well-known stock market indexes.
The&nbsp;iShares Core S&amp;P 500 ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IVV#NYSE">IVV</a>)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Vanguard S&amp;P 500 Index Fund ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>)&nbsp;launched in 2000 and 2010, respectively.
Today, the three ETFs that track the S&amp;P 500 are the largest in the world, according to <a href="https://etfdb.com/compare/market-cap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETFDB, </a>with the following assets under management:

<li>SPY: $600 billion</li>
<li>IVV: $544.5 billion</li>
<li>VOO: $544.1 billion</li>
</ul>
Based on the metrics above, SPY's time as the only ETF with $600 billion in assets under management may be short-lived, with the two other large S&amp;P 500 ETFs closely behind. Back in January when the SPY celebrated its 31st anniversary, the assets under management were:

<li>SPY:&nbsp;$474 million</li>
<li>IVV: $405 million</li>
<li>VOO: $377 million</li>
</ul>
The difference from January to October shows the strong volume inflows the S&amp;P 500 ETFs are seeing.
Why It's Important: The S&amp;P 500 has set several all-time highs in recent months and the SPY is currently up 23.6% year-to-date in 2024. This year's gain builds on a strong 2023 when the S&amp;P 500 surged over 20%.
Over the last five years, the SPY has averaged a gain of 13.2%. Since its inception, the SPY has averaged an annual return of 10.4%.
One factor that might attract inflows to S&amp;P 500 ETFs in 2024 is that it is a presidential election year.
According to <a href="https://twitter.com/Barchart/status/1739792910667645204?s=20">Barchart</a>, the S&amp;P 500 has posted gains in 13 of the last <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/23/12/36416440/why-buy-stocks-in-a-presidential-election-year-history-has-a-crazy-stat-for-you">15 presidential election years</a>. The only two presidential election years in the previous 60-plus years that saw the S&amp;P 500 down were the global financial crisis and the dot-com bubble.
The average return of the S&amp;P 500 in the presidential election years is 10.5%. Stripping out the global financial crisis and the dot-com bubble, the S&amp;P 500 gained an average of 15.3%. The average gain in presidential election years is higher than the historical average since the SPY&#8217;s inception, with or without the financial crisis and the dot-com bubble stripped out.
Strong net inflows for the SPY ETF have helped State Street in recent months. According to a Morningstar <a href="https://www.etf.com/sites/default/files/2024-10/September_2024_US_Fund_Flows_Chartbook.pdf">report</a>, for the month of September, State Street led the way with $18.4 billion in net flows. The SPY ETF had net inflows of $16 billion in September. State Street topped Vanguard ($17.3 billion) and iShares ($9.9 billion) for September net inflows for ETF companies.
SPY Price Action: The SPY is trading at $584.08 at the time of writing, compared to a 52-week trading range of $409.22 to $586.12.
