Investor sentiment weakened further midweek when a 20-year Treasury auction revealed soft demand, fueling concerns about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45550324/us-bond-market-flashing-red-30-year-yield-tops-5-prices-tank-to-october-2023-lows">future government borrowing needs.</a>
This sparked a sell-off in long-term bonds, sending the 30-year Treasury yield as high as 5.15%, before easing back toward 5% by Friday.

On the political front, the House of Representatives passed what Trump called the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill" — a sweeping <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45564489/trumps-big-tax-bill-clears-the-house-30-year-yields-jump-to-515-as-bond-market-freaks">tax and spending package.</a> According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill could increase the federal budget deficit by $3 trillion to $4 trillion over the next decade.
Trade tensions flared anew on Friday. Trump took to Truth Social to threaten Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) with 25% tariffs if it doesn't move production <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45586328/itariff-threat-trump-turns-up-the-heat-but-apples-chart-still-holds-the-line">back to the U.S.</a>
Later, he announced 50% tariffs on goods from the European Union, effective June 1, as talks between <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45585283/trump-tariff-threat-hits-europe-stocks-sink-as-50-duties-loom">Washington and Brussels cooled.</a>
The move marks the sharpest escalation in transatlantic trade relations in years. In 2024, U.S. imports from the EU reached $687 billion, with a record goods trade deficit of $236 billion. The Details: Intuit reported adjusted earnings per share of $11.65, beating the consensus estimate of $10.91. In addition, the company reported sales of $7.75 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $7.56 billion and representing a 15% year-over-year climb.
Consumer Group revenue increased 11%, Global Business Solutions Group grew 19%, Online Ecosystem climbed 20%, Credit Karma rose 31% and ProTax Group grew 9% year-over-year.

Intuit raised its fiscal-year 2025 guidance. It now sees adjusted earnings per share from $20.07 to $20.12, versus the consensus estimate of $19.34. It previously saw adjusted earnings per share between $19.16 and $19.36.
Intuit now expects sales from $18.72 billion to $18.76 billion, versus the consensus estimate of $18.35 billion. It previously saw sales from $8.16 billion to $18.35 billion.

What Happened:&nbsp;On Friday, the DOJ announced a proposed agreement with Boeing to avoid prosecution over the two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max aircraft. The crashes, occurring in October 2018 and March 2019, led to the global grounding of the Max fleet for nearly two years, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/23/boeing-737-max-crashes-doj.html">reports</a>.
The DOJ&#8217;s court filing stated, &#8220;The Agreement guarantees further accountability and substantial benefits from Boeing immediately, while avoiding the uncertainty and litigation risk presented by proceeding to trial.&#8221;

Bankrate senior industry analyst Ted Rossman <a href="https://www.bankrate.com/credit-cards/news/credit-card-balances-fell-q1-2025-borrowers-still-underwater/">warned economists</a> to tread lightly after the report, noting that credit card balances "almost always fall in the first quarter, because people go on this post-holiday spending detox." He explained that borrowers often make New Year&#8217;s resolutions to "spend less, save more, pay off debt" and "use tax refund money to pay off debt." However, balances "almost always rise in the second and third quarters" and "really spike in the fourth quarter."
Credit card usage has skyrocketed since the pandemic, jumping 54% in the last four years. Fortunately, benign reasons may be responsible for at least part of the surge. A tech-savvy generation has popularized germfree electronic transactions since COVID, disrupting formerly cash-heavy venues like supermarkets, pharmacies and transportation. Even so, stressed-out Americans trying to make ends meet are playing a major role in the debt spike.

According to Rossman, about half of Americans now pay off their credit card balances each month, avoiding interest rates that average above 20%. This crowd is less profitable for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/V">Visa (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>)</a>, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/MA">Mastercard (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MA#NYSE">MA</a>)</a> and other payment processors, accessing lucrative perks that include travel points and cashback programs. Those who don't pay their balances each month assume the burden, stuck with high interest rates to compensate for more affluent or disciplined customers.
Credit card borrowers under economic stress are climbing a very tall hill because the average balance is now approaching $6,000 per month.
