President Donald Trump rocked global markets on Wednesday with tougher-than-anticipated tariff announcements as part of his plan to reset U.S. trade policy. The measures include a 34% tariff on imports from China, raising the total duties on Chinese goods to 54% and prompting swift <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/market-summary/25/04/44623604/us-stock-likely-to-open-lower-following-trumps-tariffs-worse-than-the-worst-case-scenario-says-analyst">criticism from Beijing.</a>
The Details: Just hours after President Trump's tariff announcement, China&#8217;s Ministry of Commerce issued a statement that it &#8220;firmly opposes&#8221; the tariffs and &#8220;will resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard its own rights and interests,&#8221;<a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/Trade-war/China-blasts-Trump-s-bullying-tariffs-vows-countermeasures?utm_campaign=GL_asia_daily&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=NA_newsletter&amp;utm_content=article_link&amp;del_type=1&amp;pub_date=20250403190000&amp;seq_num=3&amp;si=79447"> per </a>Nikkei Asia.&nbsp;

"The so-called &#8216;reciprocal tariffs,&#8217; which are based on subjective and unilateral assessments by the United States, are not in line with the rules of international trade, seriously jeopardize the legitimate rights and interests of the parties concerned, and are typical of unilateral bullying,&#8221; the ministry added.&nbsp;
The Ministry of Commerce did not provide specifics on what "countermeasures" it has planned, but experts agree retaliatory measures are likely.&nbsp;
Expert Ideas: "We think the Chinese government is likely to retaliate with some targeted tariffs on US products as well as non-tariff measures like export controls," Goldman analyst Andrew Tilton wrote, <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/beijing-slams-trumps-unilateral-bullying-tariffs-signals-retaliatory-action">per</a> ZeroHedge.&nbsp;
The analyst also noted he expects China's policymakers to resist significant currency depreciation and thinks Beijing will step up easing measures to offset the drag from higher tariffs.
"Beijing has purposefully kept more in reserve, both in terms of domestic stimulus and retaliatory measures, in case it needs to respond more forcefully,&#8221; Ruby Osman, a China expert at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, told Reuters.&nbsp;
Stocks To Watch: Shares of U.S.-listed Chinese companies were trading lower Thursday morning amid global market declines with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) down 3.19% and JD.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) down 5.26%. 
The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>), tracking the FTSE China 50 Index, was down 1.86% and the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KWEB#NYSE">KWEB</a>), focusing on Chinese internet companies, was down 2.63%.&nbsp;

Trump's Tariffs Prompt China To Vow 'Countermeasures': Experts See Retaliation Likely

As global markets reel from Donald Trump&#8216;s sweeping tariff announcement, speculators who wagered on a chain reaction of trade retaliation may soon cash <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44626421/trumps-reign-of-tariffs-unleashes-d-day-on-wall-street-analyst-warns-of-stagflation-risk">in the big prize.</a>
On Thursday, trading on CFTC-regulated prediction platform Kalshi lit up with activity as speculators priced in a sharp rise in retaliatory tariffs from major U.S. trading partners. 
The market titled "Which countries will impose tariffs on the US before Q3 2025?" saw odds spike across several jurisdictions in the wake of Trump's announcement.

<li>Japan followed with a 33-point jump to 73%</li>
<li>South Africa climbed to 74%, up 16 points.</li>
<li>India saw a more cautious move, with odds now at 35%</li>
<li>Kalshi traders assigned a 96% probability that Brussels will strike back with its own tariffs in the coming months.</li>
</ul>
Only Mexico moved in the opposite direction. Following Trump&#8217;s exemption of North American partners from the new tariff structure, the odds of retaliation from the southern neighbor collapsed to 45%, down 31 percentage points.

Speaking on Bloomberg TV, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick attempted to downplay the likelihood of backlash, saying the tariffs will be applied broadly and uniformly, and adding that "it will not be effective for countries to retaliate against Trump tariffs."

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Country ETFs Witness Deep Declines</h2>
Amid the turmoil on Wall Street, U.S.-listed country ETFs took a beating Thursday as investors dumped risk ahead of possible tit-for-tat tariffs,
The VanEck Vietnam ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VNM#NYSE">VNM</a>) plunged more than 8% in premarket trading, on track for its worst session since March 2020. The U.S. will apply a 46% tariff rate on Vietnam.
Japan's iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWJ#NYSE">EWJ</a>) dropped 3%, while the iShares China Large Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) fell 1.8%. The two biggest Asian economies will see their respective tariff rate rising to 24% and 34%, respectively. 
India's iShares MSCI India ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INDA#NYSE">INDA</a>) and South Korea's iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWY#NYSE">EWY</a>) declined 1.1% and 1.5% respectively. India and South Korea are poised to face a 25% and 26% increase, respectively, in the cost of exporting goods to the U.S.
The SPDR DJ Euro STOXX 50 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FEZ#NYSE">FEZ</a>) dipped 0.9%, while the iShares South Africa Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZA#NYSE">EZA</a>) fell 4.5%.

Reported Earlier, China Caixin Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index For March 51.2 Vs. 50.6 Est.; 50.8 Prior

On Friday, March 28th, U.S. markets closed sharply lower as fears of slowing economic growth, rising inflation, and escalating tariffs under the Trump administration weighed on markets. Major tech stocks like Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple tumbled.
Consumer spending disappointed, inflation expectations surged, and investors grew cautious ahead of new tariffs. Markets anticipate possible interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
In economic data, the Fed&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge — the core PCE price index — rose 2.8% year-over-year in February, above the 2.7% forecast. Investor concerns grew as the University of Michigan survey showed 5-year inflation expectations rising to 4.1%, the highest since February 1993.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower, led by losses in consumer discretionary, communication services, and tech stocks. Utilities were the exception, closing higher and defying the broader market downturn.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.69% at 41,583.90, the S&amp;P 500 slid 1.97% to 5,580.94, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.70% to 17,322.99.
Asia Markets Today

<li>On Monday, Japan&#8217;s Nikkei 225 closed the session drastically lower by 4.03% at 35,624.50, led by losses in the Shipbuilding, Manufacturing, and Services sectors.</li>
<li>Japan&#8217;s Nikkei 225 plunged 4.05%, entering correction territory with a nearly 12% drop from its December peak, driven by fears over U.S. tariffs.</li>
<li>Australia&#8217;s S&amp;P/ASX 200 was down 1.74% and closed at 7,843.40, led by losses in the Metals &amp; Mining, Resources and Materials sectors.</li>
<li>India markets closed for the Ramzan (Id-Ul-Fitar) holiday.</li>
<li>China&#8217;s Shanghai Composite declined 0.46% to 3,335.75, and the Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 slid 0.71% to 3,887.31.</li>
<li>Hong Kong&#8217;s Hang Seng was down 1.31%, ending the session at 23,119.58.</li>

<li>Germany&#8217;s DAX declined 1.27%.</li>

<li>European stocks fell sharply as investors braced for U.S. tariffs, which are set to take effect Wednesday. Fears of broader trade measures raised recession risks and pressured global markets and oil prices.</li>

<li>Crude Oil WTI was trading higher by 0.23% at $69.52/bbl, and Brent was up 0.23% at $72.93/bbl.</li>
<li>Oil prices rose after Trump threatened 25–50% tariffs on Russian oil buyers, but gains were limited as traders doubted the seriousness of the move. Analysts cited market fatigue over U.S. sanctions talk.</li>
<li>Natural Gas rose 03.12% to $4.192.</li>
<li>Gold was trading higher by 1.02% at $3,146.11, Silver was up 0.15% to $34.868, and Copper slid 1.80% to $5.0375.</li>
<li>Gold surged to a record high on Monday, marking its third straight session of gains, as investors sought safety amid rising tariff uncertainty and inflation fears.</li>
