<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which Sectors Win Most From Dollar Weakness?</h2>



The Magnificent Seven sit at the crossroads of tech and international sales—two key beneficiaries of currency trends. 



Among S&amp;P 500 sectors, Information Technology has the highest overseas exposure at 56%, followed by Materials (49%), Energy (37%), and Communication Services (31%).



That exposure is why Nasdaq-100 companies, which include all of the Mag 7, generate nearly 50% of revenue abroad, almost double the S&amp;P 500's 28%. The dollar's plunge is set to amplify profit margins just as earnings season heats up.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Northrop: The Stealth Challenger</h2>

Lockheed Vs. RTX Vs. Northrop: Defense Giants Go Head-To-Head Before Earnings Blastoff

The investment world loves its false dichotomies.



Growth versus value. Active versus passive.



And perhaps the most stubbornly persistent: deep value versus momentum.



But here&#8217;s the thing: the best portfolios don&#8217;t pick sides. They recognize that markets cycle, and different strategies work better at different times.



I&#8217;ve spent decades working both sides of this equation, and I&#8217;ve learned that combining deep value and momentum approaches isn&#8217;t just possible; it&#8217;s essential for long-term success.



The key is understanding when to lean into each strategy and, more importantly, how to execute both properly.



Let me show you.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Deep Value Foundation</h2>



Let&#8217;s start with deep value, since that&#8217;s where most of my career has been focused.



True deep value investing isn&#8217;t about buying any cheap stock that shows up on a screen. It&#8217;s about finding quality businesses trading at significant discounts to their intrinsic worth, with enough financial strength to survive whatever crisis put them in the bargain bin.



Credit quality and margin of safety aren&#8217;t just buzzwords; they&#8217;re survival tools. When you&#8217;re buying distressed or out-of-favor companies, you need to know they can weather the storm.



That means scrutinizing balance sheets, understanding debt structures, and calculating multiple scenarios for intrinsic value.



A stock trading at 0.5x book value might look attractive, but if the company is hemorrhaging cash and facing a debt wall, that discount could become a total loss.



Valuation metrics matter, but they&#8217;re just the starting point. Price-to-book, price-to-sales, enterprise value-to-EBITDA: these ratios help identify candidates, but they don&#8217;t tell you if a business is worth saving.



You need to dig deeper into the quality of assets, the sustainability of cash flows, and the competence of management.



The margin of safety concept becomes even more critical in deep value work. When you&#8217;re buying troubled companies, you need extra cushion for the inevitable surprises. I typically look for situations where even a pessimistic scenario still offers reasonable returns.



This conservative approach has kept me out of value traps that looked compelling on paper but were wealth destroyers in practice.

Now, momentum gets a bad rap in value circles, often dismissed as speculation or trend following.



But properly executed momentum investing is about identifying businesses with accelerating fundamentals and riding that acceleration while it lasts.



The key distinction is between price momentum and fundamental momentum. Price momentum alone (buying stocks just because they&#8217;re going up) can be a recipe for disaster.



But fundamental momentum (improving margins, accelerating revenue growth, expanding market share) is a different animal entirely.



When I&#8217;m looking at momentum candidates, I want to see evidence that the business is genuinely improving.



Rising return on equity, increasing cash flow margins, growing market share in expanding markets. These are the fundamentals that drive sustainable price appreciation, not just technical chart patterns.



The challenge with momentum investing is knowing when to hold and when to fold. Unlike deep value situations where you can afford to wait years for recognition, momentum stocks require active monitoring.



When the fundamental momentum starts to fade (and it always does eventually), you need to be ready to move on.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Timing the Market Cycles</h2>



This is where the magic happens: using market conditions to determine which strategy to emphasize. Markets aren&#8217;t efficient, but they do tend to swing between extremes. Understanding these cycles and positioning accordingly can dramatically improve your results.



When trend indicators are showing strength (whether that&#8217;s moving averages, breadth measures, or simply the general tone of the market), that&#8217;s when momentum strategies tend to work best. Rising markets lift the boats that are already floating, and fundamental momentum gets rewarded with premium valuations.



But when markets become oversold, when sentiment turns negative and quality companies get thrown out with the garbage, that&#8217;s deep value hunting season. These are the periods when margin of safety becomes most important, because you&#8217;re buying into pessimism and uncertainty.



I use a combination of technical and sentiment indicators to gauge these cycles. The VIX, credit spreads, and insider buying activity all provide clues about market psychology.



When fear dominates, I&#8217;m more aggressive with deep value positions.



When optimism reigns, I&#8217;ll take profits on value holdings that have worked and look for momentum opportunities.



The art is in the transitions. Markets don&#8217;t flip from bullish to bearish overnight, and neither should your portfolio allocation. I typically start shifting emphasis when I see divergences: momentum stocks struggling despite positive market action, or value stocks showing signs of life during market weakness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Portfolio Construction in Practice</h2>



In practice, this means running a portfolio with exposure to both strategies, but varying the allocation based on market conditions. During strong trending markets, I might have 60 to 70% in momentum positions, with the remainder in deep value situations that I&#8217;m accumulating on weakness.



When markets turn volatile or start showing signs of exhaustion, I&#8217;ll flip that allocation. I&#8217;ll take profits on momentum positions that have run their course and redeploy that capital into deep value opportunities that the market is discarding.



The key is discipline. It&#8217;s tempting to chase performance: to go all-in on momentum during bull markets or to abandon value during bear markets. But the best results come from staying true to the process and recognizing that both strategies have their time and place.



Risk management becomes crucial when running this kind of hybrid approach. Position sizing, diversification, and stop-loss discipline all matter more when you&#8217;re juggling different investment styles. I typically limit individual positions to 3 to 5% of the portfolio and maintain exposure across different sectors and market caps.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Long Game</h2>



The beauty of this approach is that it acknowledges market reality while staying true to fundamental principles. Deep value provides the foundation: the anchor positions that can compound wealth over long periods. Momentum provides the acceleration: the opportunities to capture shorter-term moves in improving businesses.



Neither strategy works all the time, but together they can provide more consistent results across different market environments. The value positions protect you during momentum crashes, while the momentum positions provide upside participation during bull markets.

In the meantime, the analyst believes altcoins present more attractive opportunities in the current environment.



Michael van de Poppe observes that Bitcoin has now cleared liquidity on both sides, indicating market indecision. 



With volatility compressing, he expects a major breakout or breakdown soon.

Bitcoin Stalls Near $117,000 As XRP, Solana, Dogecoin Extend Gains

Auto company General Motors Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) could see shares hit new highs for the 2025 year with a strong earnings report Tuesday <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">before market open.</a>



Here are the analyst estimates and key items to watch.



Earnings Estimates: Analysts expect General Motors to report second-quarter revenue of $45.57 billion, down from $47.97 billion in last year's second quarter, according to data <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/register?utm_adType=bzprocontent&amp;utm_campaign=14daytrial&amp;utm_ad=0721">from Benzinga Pro.</a>



The company has beaten analyst estimates for revenue in 12 straight quarters.



Analysts expect General Motors to report second-quarter earnings per share of $2.40, down from $3.06 in last year's second quarter. The company has beaten analyst estimates for earnings per share in 11 straight quarters.

Key Items to Watch: General Motors' earnings report comes after the automaker recently reported U.S. sales were up 7% year-over-year in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/07/46206447/ford-general-motors-shares-rise-as-automakers-report-q2-sales-growth">the second quarter</a>, and were up 12% year-over-year in the first half of 2025.



The company cited strong full-size pickups and SUV sales along with record crossover sales.



Another strong seller in the second quarter was electric vehicles, which more than doubled year-over-year.



"Our EVs continue to grow faster than the industry," the company said.



General Motors became the second-largest electric vehicle seller last year and momentum continued in 2025. The company reported that Chevrolet was the bestselling EV brand in the quarter with Cadillac the luxury EV market share leader. Cadillac had its best retail market share since 2014 in the second quarter.



As <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/large-cap/25/07/46475391/tesla-cybertruck-bet-not-paying-off-ford-gm-outsell-ev-giant">Benzinga recently reported</a>, General Motors saw its Hummer EV post 4,508 deliveries in the U.S. in the second quarter, beating out the Tesla Cybertruck for second place among electric pickup trucks. Hummer EV sales were up 3,479 in the first quarter.



The Silverado EV also sold well in the second quarter with 3,056 US deliveries, up from 2,383 in the first quarter.



"The investments we have made in our crossovers, SUVs, and pickups — both gas and electric — along with great execution by our employees, suppliers and dealers, have made GM the engine of growth for the U.S. industry this year," GM Senior Vice President and President of North America Duncan Aldred said.



Along with commentary on the EV growth and how the elimination of federal tax credits could impact demand, investors and analysts will also be looking for commentary on tariffs.



General Motors is one of several automakers that could be most impacted by tariffs placed on Mexico and Canada and vehicles exported into the U.S. from those countries.



Ahead of the earnings report, analysts have been cautious on GM stock. Here are some of the recent <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/GM/analyst-ratings">analyst ratings on General Motors</a> and their price targets:

General Motors Q2 Preview: EV Strength Could Seal 13th Straight Revenue Beat

Despite fears that President Donald Trump&#8216;s aggressive tariff policy would crush the appeal of U.S. assets, foreign investors are doing the exact opposite—buying American securities at a record-setting pace and powering one of the strongest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/expert-ideas">rallies in recent history.</a>



According to May&#8217;s Treasury International Capital System (TICS) data, total net capital inflows into the U.S. reached an unprecedented $1.76 trillion over the 12 months ending in May 2025. 



That includes everything from Treasuries and corporate bonds to stocks and Treasury bills.



These numbers flatly defy the doomsday narrative of an "end to U.S. exceptionalism" that followed Trump's April 2 tariffs, which had briefly sent stocks, bonds and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44710975/wall-streets-american-exceptionalism-trade-falters-as-dollar-stocks-bonds-all-slide">dollar tumbling in unison.</a>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">‘US Exceptionalism' Was Supposed To End With Trump — Instead, It's Breaking New Records</h3>



In a note shared Monday, veteran Wall Street strategist Ed Yardeni said that despite the noise, investors abroad are not fleeing U.S. markets.



"Doomsters warn that foreign investors are losing their confidence in U.S. Treasuries and in the U.S. dollar," he said.



"Yet, the Treasury&#8217;s latest TICS data show that they remain strong buyers of U.S. debt."



Foreign investors poured $597 billion into U.S. equities over the past year—setting a record pace that aligns closely with the dramatic rebound in U.S. stock markets. 



Since the correction low on April 8, the S&amp;P 500 – as tracked by the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) – has surged 26.4% breaking new all-time highs. 



During May alone, $114 billion flowed into U.S. stocks, while another $146 billion was allocated to Treasuries and bonds.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Foreign Investors Drive Wall Street Boom</h3>



A key insight from the data is that private foreign investors, rather than official government institutions, are leading the charge. 



Of the $1.76 trillion in inflows, just $33.5 billion came from official foreign accounts, while an overwhelming $1.73 trillion was attributed to private investors—pension funds, asset managers and institutions with a long-term mandate for returns and stability.



The U.S. bond market also witnessed robust international buying. Foreign purchases of U.S. bonds totaled $941 billion in the past year, including $541 billion into Treasuries, $267 billion into corporate bonds and $133 billion into agency paper.



In the short-term market, inflows into Treasury bills hit $336 billion over the same period, with private investors accounting for $193 billion of that total.



This surge in demand helps explain why long-term bond yields have remained surprisingly stable despite fiscal pressures and rate volatility. The 10-year Treasury yield has hovered between 4.25% and 4.75% for much of the year, a range that Yardeni said reflects a normalization in bond pricing last seen before the Great Financial Crisis.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Is The Dollar Still Weak?</h3>



One piece of the puzzle remains confusing. 



Despite the massive foreign capital inflows, the U.S. dollar index (DXY) has plunged by 10% in 2025. Yardeni called the dollar's drop a "correction," not a new long-term trend.



He said the divergence between flows and dollar performance may reverse soon, especially as bond and equity demand remains solid and U.S. growth stays ahead of global peers.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Faith In US Market Dominance Holds Firm</h3>



The strength of U.S. inflows suggests that global investors see Trump's trade war not as a deal-breaker, but a temporary hurdle. 



"Our faith in the kindness of strangers has been validated by the latest Treasury data," Yardeni said.



The latest data leaves little doubt: despite trade tensions, fiscal ballooning and a shifting global landscape, U.S. markets remain the preferred destination for global capital. 



And as long as American assets continue to deliver returns—and relative economic outperformance—foreign investors are not just staying in the game, they're doubling down.



For now, the "Sell America" narrative has been buried under $1.76 trillion worth of foreign conviction.

Trump's Economy Is Riding A Tsunami Of Inflows — So Much For 'Sell America'

Wall Street opened the week on a risk-on footing, with the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 extending record highs as strong earnings reinforced confidence in corporate America and investors continued to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">shrug off trade tensions.</a>



By midday trading in New York, the S&amp;P 500 had climbed 0.6% to break above 6,330, the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.8% to 23,260, and the Dow Jones added 260 points, or 0.6%. 



Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reaffirmed the August 1 tariff deadline as &#8220;hard,&#8221; though he said that negotiation are set to continue.

Gold prices jumped 1.5% to $3,400 per ounce, hitting a one-month-high, while silver gained 1.9%, both lifted by renewed dollar weakness.



The U.S. dollar index slipped below 98 amid rising concerns over the Fed's independence. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called for a review of the institution, telling CNBC that there's a need to "examine the entire Federal Reserve institution and whether they have been successful."



Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's prolonged criticism of Fed Chair Jerome Powell reignited speculation about a possible dismissal. According to CFTC-regulated betting platform Kalshi, there&#8217;s a 23% chance Powell could be removed by the end of the year. Powell is legally protected from being removed by Trump.



Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rose 1.1% to $118,590, and Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) added 1.8%, as digital asset demand remained strong following latest policy breakthroughs.

Alphabet Set For Strong Q2 Earnings — But Analysts Warn: 'AI Search Remains Google's War To Lose'

Domino&#8217;s Pizza Inc. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $3.81, falling short of the consensus estimate of $3.93.

The supply chain gross margin increased by 0.5 percentage points, primarily due to procurement productivity, partially offset by the company&#8217;s food basket cost increase.



The company&#8217;s income from operations increased 14.8% to $225 million. However, net income decreased 7.7% to $131.1 million, primarily due to an unfavorable change in pre-tax net realized and unrealized losses associated with the company&#8217;s investment in DPC&nbsp;Dash&nbsp;Ltd, as well as a higher effective tax rate.



The company&#8217;s board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.74 per share to be paid on September 30. During the quarter, Domino&#8217;s repurchased and retired 315,696 shares of common stock for $150 million, with $614.3 million remaining in its share repurchase authorization.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) has issued an urgent security alert after uncovering active cyberattacks targeting SharePoint server software widely used by U.S. government agencies and businesses for internal document sharing.



What Happened: On Saturday, Microsoft disclosed that previously unknown vulnerabilities in on-premises SharePoint servers are being exploited in a "zero-day" attack, reported Reuters.



The company confirmed that SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365 is not affected. "We&#8217;ve been coordinating closely with CISA, DOD Cyber Defense Command, and key cybersecurity partners globally throughout our response," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

Jack Dorsey's Block, With Over $1 Billion In Bitcoin Holdings, Set To Join S&P 500 — Shares Pop 8% In Overnight Trading

U.S. stock futures were positive on Monday after ending mostly lower on Friday. Futures of major benchmark indices were higher.



Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reiterated Aug. 1 as the &#8220;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/07/46512424/howard-lutnick-says-trumps-august-1-tariff-hard-deadline-is-final-smaller-nations-face-10-base-rate">hard deadline</a>&#8221; for tariffs but added that the administration is willing to negotiate even after that date. 



Investors will also look out for the big-ticket earnings this week, including those of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>).



Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.38% and the two-year bond was at 3.85%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 95.3% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its July meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, were higher in premarket on Monday. The SPY was up 0.30% at $629.46, while the QQQ advanced 0.32% to $563.06, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.



Cues From Last Session:



Stocks in the Utilities, Consumer Discretionary, and Real Estate sectors recorded the biggest gains on Friday. Conversely, Energy, Health Care, and Consumer Staples stocks ended the session lower.



American Express Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AXP#NYSE">AXP</a>) ended 2.35% lower despite reporting better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter 2025 results on Friday. MEI Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MEIP#NASDAQ">MEIP</a>) surged 31.55% after the company announced a $100 million private placement, with plans to use the proceeds to launch a Litecoin treasury strategy.



In the last week, Dow Jones declined 0.01%, S&amp;P 500 rose 0.67% and Nasdaq Composite advanced by 1.47%.



On the economic data front, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index came in at a five-month high for June. One-year inflation expectations fell to 4.4%, down from 5% in the prior month, easing concerns that tariffs are stoking broader price pressures.



The Dow Jones index ended 142 points or 0.32% lower at 44,342.19, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell below the flatline by 0.009% to 6,296.79. Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.048% to 20,895.66, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, tumbled 0.61% to end at 2,240.01.

Insights From Analysts:



Ryan Detrick from Carson Research highlighted in an X post that the &#8220;market continues to favor the bulls.&#8221;



Highlighting JC Parets&#8217; data, he said that the technology stocks were outperforming relative to consumer staples stocks. Also, underscoring Cam Hui&#8217;s data, he explained that defensive stocks were lagging.



Detrick called these as &#8220;bullish&#8221; signs.

In another post, Detrick said that the mention of inflation in S&amp;P 500 transcripts was at its lowest since early 2021.



Highlighting this, he said that &#8220;it does appear the door is open for cuts,&#8221; adding a rhetorical question, saying that &#8220;Will they do it is another question.&#8221;

Meanwhile, Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates said that &#8220;regardless of whether or not the Fed cuts at its July FOMC meeting, a dovish FOMC statement is now virtually guaranteed to a growing number of members who want to cut.&#8221;



He mentioned Fed Governor Christopher Waller&#8216;s comments from Friday morning, where he laid out the case why the Fed should cut key interest rates to support a soft labor market.



&#8220;Specifically, Waller said the U.S. economy's momentum has slowed significantly, and he expects it to &#8216;remain soft&#8217; for the rest of 2025. Waller also said the task of analyzing the labor market is complicated by recent immigration crackdowns,&#8221; Navellier said.



He also pointed out that &#8220;There&#8217;s no evidence of tariffs in the wholesale price report.&#8221;



This was as the Labor Department reported that the Producer Price Index (PPI) was unchanged in June, which was substantially below economists' consensus estimate of a 0.2% increase.



Excluding food, energy, and trade services, the core PPI was also unchanged in June, which was also below economists' consensus estimate of a 0.2% increase.

Commodities, Gold, And Global Equity Markets:



Crude oil futures were trading lower in the early New York session by 0.53% to hover around $65.71 per barrel.



Gold Spot US Dollar rose 0.45% to hover around $3,365.47 per ounce. Its last record high stood at $3,500.33 per ounce. The U.S. Dollar Index spot was lower by 0.24% at the 98.2430 level.



Asian markets ended on a mixed note on Monday as Japan's Nikkei 225 and Australia's ASX 200 indices fell. While Hong Kong's Hang Seng, India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex, China&#8217;s CSI 300, and South Korea's Kospi indices rose. European markets were mostly lower in early trade.
