This month, Nubit (NB) raised $12 million with the bulk coming from Polychain Capital. Nubit builds decentralized cloud storage for blockchain AI models. They were the only notable storage investment from venture capital (VC) in the first quarter, but demand for decentralized storage infrastructure, especially in areas like AI, decentralized finance (DeFi), and data indexing is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 22.4% over the next decade, <a href="https://www.gminsights.com/industry-analysis/decentralized-storage-market?utm">according</a> to business intelligence firm Growth Insights.
If Web3 is going to grow, blockchain storage is going to have to grow right along with it.
"Decentralized data storage serves the purpose of self-sovereign data owned by the users with strong availability, without relying on a single centralized entity," said Kenneth Shek, Project Lead of the newly launched Moca Network (MOCA).
Decentralized data storage ensures that data are available, interoperable, and verifiable by any apps, based on the users' own selective disclosure, with privacy further enhanced cryptographically making it very different from traditional clouds like AWS. Moca Chain's storage and privacy solution testnet is scheduled to launch only in the third quarter of this year. "We have already seen the largest funds in the world actively searching for and investing here," Shek said. "Verifiable compute" is when a platform performs a computation on a blockchain —such as a basic structured query language (SQL queries) request that tells a database what data you want – they can cryptographically prove the result is correct without needing the user to trust the server that ran the calculation.
"Decentralized storage is important, but the real power behind them lies in running zero knowledge-proven computations over that data in order to deliver trustless, real-time insights to smart contracts," Dykstra said.
Like the traditional cloud, decentralized storage keeps the data safe and readily accessible. But that's not enough on its own. In blockchain ecosystems (like decentralized finance services and blockchain gaming), users need real-time decisions, including basic things like who won the game; or did this crypto wallet really make that trade; or what is the moving average of token trades in the last hour?
If a user can run computations on that stored data, and use zero-knowledge proofs to guarantee the result is correct, the user has now enabled trustless automation like using a credit card or a PIN-accessed ATM machine, which is what smart contracts need to actually act on.
Dykstra said investors should also look at Hyperliquid (HYPE) and ZKsync (ZK) as a potential blockchain storage play. ZK is offered on Coinbase and Kraken and Hyperliquid is mostly held by investors on the Hyperliquid exchange.
"I think Hyperliquid's building a great exchange, and ZKsync has arguably built some of the best rollup tech in the space," Dykstra said.&nbsp;
Storage platforms are increasingly being used in AI, data indexing, decentralized publishing, and blockchain scalability (e.g., data availability layers). The future likely holds more crossover with enterprise tech, particularly as token-based incentives prove more efficient for long-term or trustless storage.
Despite the VC deals mentioned earlier, the market for blockchain<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/content/45184025/crypto-venture-funding-surges-to-4-9b-in-q1-2025-highest-since-2022"> remains challenging</a> as VC firms seem more focused on AI, and not necessarily blockchain-related AI.
Excluding a large <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/03/44281794/binance-secures-2-billion-investment-from-abu-dhabi-mgx">Binance funding round this year</a>, the first quarter crypto funding total ended up between $1.8–2 billion, a decline from Q1 2024. Grizzly also raised concerns about the company&#8217;s financial standing and expressed concerns related to the company&#8217;s alleged dependency on the Chinese government. While capital needs are intensifying, the company&#8217;s financials are worsening, the short seller said. 
Pony made its public debut on the Nasdaq last year, raising $260 million in its IPO. Ahead of its IPO the company showed encouraging trends for revenue and profitability, but Grizzly said revenue growth has slowed and net losses are accelerating. 
Grizzly is also concerned about Pony&#8217;s valuation. The company had a market cap of approximately $4.54 billion as of Friday's close, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>.
The short seller believes the company&#8217;s valuation has benefited from &#8220;hype&#8221; in the robotaxi space. There is also excitement surrounding a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/46129177/pony-ai-stock-pops-on-report-uber-is-in-talks-with-travis-kalanick-to-invest-in-potential-deal">potential deal</a> with former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick that was reported in June. Grizzly believes a potential acquisition of the company&#8217;s U.S. operations is unlikely due to a lack of meaningful operations and the company&#8217;s aforementioned worsening financial standing. 
&#8220;We think that PONY finds itself fundamentally in a difficult position with worsening financials, growing cash needs, and fierce competition that seems way ahead. PONY's close ties to the Chinese government make any kind of acquisition very difficult from the investor's perspective,&#8221; the short seller said.
Pony announced last week that its seventh-generation robotaxi recently entered mass production for multiple models and began road testing. The company is targeting an expansion of its fleet to 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025.
PONY Price Action: <a href="http://benzinga.com/quote/PONY" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pony.ai shares</a> are up approximately 135% over the past three months. The stock is trading essentially flat since the short report was published at the end of last week. Pony shares were trading higher early in Monday&#8217;s session, but were down 0.55% at $12.70 at the time of publication, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>.

Pony AI Shrugs Off 'Worst Of The Robotaxi Hype' Short Seller Allegation

Elon Musk&#8217;s AI startup, xAI, is growing into a multi-billion-dollar behemoth at an astonishing rate, with a bit of help from his other businesses. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX, another company founded by Musk, had invested $2 billion in the AI firm. And now, Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shareholders may be allowed to vote on whether the EV maker should also invest in xAI, based on Musk&#8217;s cryptic comments on X.
However, Tesla is already doing business with xAI. The carmaker sold nearly $200 million worth of its energy storage batteries to xAI last year and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/07/46347324/musk-says-grok-coming-to-teslas-by-next-week-evs-getting-the-smartest-ai-in-the-world">recently began integrating Grok</a>, xAI's chatbot, into its vehicles.
For ETF investors, this growing entanglement could mean more than meets the eye.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tesla ETFs: Passive Exposure To An Active Gamble?</h2>
ETFs that have Tesla as one of their leading holdings, such as trending innovation and AI-related funds like ARK Innovation ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKK#BATS">ARKK</a>), Grayscale Bitcoin Adopters ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BCOR#NYSE">BCOR</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), may now be unintentionally exposed to Musk&#8217;s AI empire, even though xAI is a privately held firm. With an expense ratio of 0.20%, QQQ is the cheapest of the three, compared with BCOR&#8217;s 0.59% and ARKK&#8217;s 0.75%.
These ETFs seem to be turning into proxy plays on Musk&#8217;s AI goals. They didn&#8217;t enroll for that, but Tesla&#8217;s increasing connections with xAI, both financial and technological, are making that connection difficult to overlook.
As of July, Tesla represented 18% of BCOR&#8217;s portfolio, 9.7% of ARKK&#8217;s portfolio and 2.7% of QQQ&#8217;s holdings. While Tesla&#8217;s fundamental business continues to be EVs and energy storage, its evolving emphasis on AI, software and ecosystem plays means ETF investors may be owning more than merely a car company.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">xAI Equation: Big Valuation, Bigger Risks</h2>
Established in the first half of 2023, xAI has had its value swell from $18 billion to a reported $200 billion in less than 18 months, according to Bloomberg, which reported last week that the firm is eyeing a $10 billion investment at a $200 billion valuation. Yet it&#8217;s also reported to be spending $1 billion every month, per Bloomberg.
Even though there is no direct public market access to xAI, Tesla&#8217;s increasing synergy with the startup indirectly influences Tesla&#8217;s operating and financial results, and consequently, the ETFs that hold it.
There&#8217;s precedent for alarm. Tesla itself was once a capital-consuming company, but the introduction of the Model 3 and Model Y transformed it into a cash machine. However, with Tesla&#8217;s EV sales under siege and the company holding $37 billion in cash, a potential xAI investment could represent either a strategic shift or a perilous distraction.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Retail Investors: Along For The Ride?</h2>
Most investors who own Tesla do so through ETFs, believing they&#8217;re investing in clean energy or next-generation transportation. However, with Tesla now on the verge of becoming an AI hardware vendor and even a potential investor in xAI, the boundaries between Musk&#8217;s public and private pursuits are becoming increasingly blurred.
Musk has directly stated that he doesn&#8217;t favor a merger of Tesla and xAI. Yet, even without a merger, cross-company business and common strategic objectives are bringing the two entities closer together. For ETF shareholders, the risk is straightforward: they could be exposed to the upside or downside of xAI without having a direct stake in it.
