For us long-term investors, we may find ourselves having to sell some stocks during a market drawdown.
It's an unpleasant thought I've had since early April, when the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/bear-markets-in-context">fell by around 20%</a>&nbsp;from its Feb. 19 all-time high.
But does it always make sense to think of a 20% decline in your stock portfolio as a loss?

A common answer is that it's not a loss until you sell. This is the distinction between a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/04/021204.asp">realized loss and an unrealized loss</a>.
But even if you sell during a bear market, do you really lose 20%?
For many long-term investors, there's a case to be made that the answer is&nbsp;no.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reframing how we think about market drawdowns &#x1f914;</h2>
At its April 7 intraday bottom, the S&amp;P 500 reached a low of 4,835.04. This was the lowest level since Jan. 19, 2024.
In the context of my personal stock portfolio, which almost totally consists of purchases of S&amp;P 500 index funds, I made three observations at the time:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>All of my trades since January 2024 were in the red.</li>
<li>All of my trades from 2005, when I opened my first 401(k) account, through 2023 were profitable.</li>
<li>I put much more money to work from 2005 to 2023 than I did from 2024 to 2025.</li>
</ul>

Over 95% of the contributions I've made to my retirement accounts occurred when the stock market was much lower than the April 2025 low.
This means I still earned a substantial positive return investing in the stock market throughout my adult life. Even the purchases I made near market peaks before the global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic were significantly profitable trades.
This is a roundabout way of saying that I'm thinking more about my&nbsp;<a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/costbasis.asp">cost basis</a>. Since I made most of my purchases when the stock market was much lower than where it's trading today, my average cost basis is very low.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">This doesn't actually change anything, Sam &#x1f928;</h2>
To be clear, reframing how you think about the performance of your investments does not change the actual performance of your investments.
Sure, I'm still very much in the money. But there's also no denying that at the April 7 low, the value of my portfolio was still down about 20% from its peak.
If you are a stone-cold, totally rational investor, then this discussion was perhaps a waste of time. But I think most of us benefit from some perspective when faced with jarring drops in our portfolios.
For me, thinking about how much I'm up relative to my cost basis has been much more positive on my mental health than thinking about how much I'm down from the market's peak.

An early-access version will launch later this year for prototyping and partner feedback, with a fully certified release planned for late 2026.
The platform will be showcased at the Automobil-Elektronik Kongress on June 24–25 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. 
QNX COO John Wall said the project aims to &#8220;build smarter, safer vehicles, faster,&#8221; while Vector President Matthias Traub called it a step toward empowering the entire automotive ecosystem to create the next generation of intelligent vehicles.

Ramsey immediately flagged the situation. &#8220;It sounds like he&#8217;s really manipulating you here,&#8221; he said. Warshaw agreed, noting how emotional and pressured Shelby felt. &#8220;When something doesn&#8217;t feel right, it&#8217;s not right,&#8221; she told her.

The call took a sharp turn when Warshaw asked whether Shelby had actually met the man in real life. &#8220;Oh, um, well, it&#8217;s mostly online. I&#8217;ve been trying to meet him in person,&#8221; Shelby said.
Ramsey cut in: &#8220;You&#8217;ve never met him in person? Can you spell catfish? Does that all sound right to you? Or did you think we were going to tell you something else?&#8221; And Warshaw added, &#8220;That's the con man part.&#8221;

The Pixar unit of Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) has been responsible for massive box office hits like the Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Monsters Inc. franchises. The latest Pixar film is breaking records, but not in a good way.
What Happened: New Disney film "Elio" from Pixar struggled in its box office debut, ranking third behind "28 Years Later" and the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/entertainment/25/06/45960044/live-action-how-to-train-your-dragon-box-office-soars-above-cartoon-films-inside-comcasts-2025-movie-magic">live-action family-friendly,</a> "How to Train Your Dragon."
"Elio" grossed $21 million domestically during its opening weekend, which is the worst open for a Pixar film in modern history, as reported by <a href="https://variety.com/2025/film/box-office/elio-pixar-worst-box-office-opening-28-years-later-debut-1236437579/">Variety</a>. Estimates for the film predicted it would open with $25 million to $30 million domestically.
Adding in $14 million from international theaters, the film grossed $35 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
This is the only Pixar film set for a 2025 release and will hurt Disney in comparable sales as it goes up against the 2024 hit "Inside Out 2," which grossed $1.69 billion worldwide. Outside of "Inside Out 2," the Pixar unit has struggled to produce hits in recent years, with several of the original films sent to the Disney+ streaming platform instead of theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The miss by "Elio" comes with kid-friendly movies showing strong performance in 2025 for movie studios and movie theater chains like AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMC#NYSE">AMC</a>) and Cinemark Holdings (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNK#NYSE">CNK</a>).
"How to Train Your Dragon" topped the box office for the weekend with $37 million, adding to its impressive $83 million debut from last week. Domestically, the film has made $160.4 million to rank seventh in 2025.
In fact, five of the top 10 grossing films in <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/2025/?ref_=bo_yl_table_1">2025 </a>are kid-friendly, including several from Disney. "A Minecraft Movie" ranks first at $423.9 million, followed by Disney's live-action "Lilo &amp; Stitch" at $386.7 million. "How to Train Your Dragon" ranks seventh followed by 2024 carryover "Mufasa: The Lion King," which has made $126.4 million in 2025 and "Dog Man," ranking 10th.
Along with a strong showing of kid-friendly movies, Disney shows a strong dominance among the top-grossing movies with "Lilo &amp; Stitch" in second, "Captain America: Brave New World" in fourth, "Thunderbolts" in fifth and "Mufasa" in ninth. Just outside of the top 10 is "Snow White" at 11th with $87.2 million domestically. &nbsp;

What's Next: The new low for Pixar breaks the 2023 domestic total of "Elemental," which opened with $29.6 million domestically. That film went on to manage a respectable box office before it left theaters thanks to strong reviews.
"Elemental" grossed $155 million domestically and $496 million worldwide. With a strong "A" rating on CinemaScore and 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for "Elio," Disney will be hoping for a similar rebound for its latest Pixar film.
Disney shareholders looking ahead at the 2025 release schedule likely aren't too worried about the weak "Elio" opening. While the film being a big miss is definitely worrisome, it comes with Disney having more blockbusters set for release the rest of the year, including:

Disney hit $2 billion at the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42603589/disney-hits-2-billion-domestic-box-office-wins-top-honors-global-box-office-2025-to-grow-8-to-33b-analyst-says">domestic box office</a> in 2025 for the second time since 2019. With a strong lineup of films and a total already over $1 billion year-to-date, the media giant could hit this milestone again.
Expectations were not overly high for "Elio" given it was an original film and not from an existing franchise. The lineup above shows films from existing franchises and proven success, which sets Disney up for a potential strong second half of 2025.
DIS Price Action: Disney stock was trading down 1.07% at $116.37 on Monday at publication versus a 52-week trading range of $80.10 to $120.50. Disney stock is up 5.7% year-to-date in 2025 and up 14.8% over the last year.

AI capabilities are changing search interactions and increasing utility and functionality, Post noted.
Given new capabilities, the analyst noted that a multi-tiered product monetization structure that includes subscriptions is evolving.

He reviewed Google&#8217;s search business drivers, including a growing revenue pie as search utility has had a step function increase, a shift from traditional ad-supported search towards paid tiers, a reduction in search clicks and a change from CPC to CPA transactions, and OpenAI traffic ramp and competitive catalysts.
Post said the growing adoption of Google&#8217;s AI Overviews and AI Mode could result in fewer clicks but will enable Google to better interpret queries with targeted ads.
The analyst also noted that Google&#8217;s updated Smart Bidding framework should broaden ad eligibility across a broader range of query types, further supporting AI monetization.
As Google monetization evolves, Search metrics such as paid clicks could become less relevant, and monetization KPIs (like ARPU) may better reflect Search performance, he said.
Post noted an increased focus by Google on product reach disclosure (15 products with 500 million+ users).
According to the analyst, Google is well-positioned with tech talent, extensive data to build AI models, and multi-product distribution to drive AI usage and monetization.
He said that beyond Search, Google will capture growth through Google One subscriptions, Workspace price increases, and system-level integrations across Android and ChromeOS.
Post estimated that Gemini-driven subscription revenue could grow to $12 billion by 2027 and Workspace will see a $1 billion+ annualized benefit from price increases this year.
The starting point for access to information and transactions will shift from browser-based to mobile O/S and app-based, with at least five tech titans (Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/amzn#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Google, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>), and OpenAI) targeting the opportunity, the analyst said.
He said this shift will erode Google&#8217;s long-standing competitive moats and reduce usage share.
In the near term, OpenAI is well funded and scaling rapidly and likely to introduce ads, while Meta could launch Agentic AI capabilities to its 1 billion assistant users, and Amazon has built an Agent that can shop across other sites, Post said.
