Investors are reacting to multiple events that could impact the values of stocks and sectors in the coming weeks, as Iran launched a missile attack on Israel Tuesday, raising <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/middle-east">tensions in the Middle East.</a>
Middle East Conflict: Iran&#8217;s attack on Israel came in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
On Tuesday, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States worked with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to help defend the country from an attack of around 200 missiles.
During a White House press briefing, Sullivan said President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris monitored the attack from the White House situation room.
The U.S. government is working with the IDF to assess the impact of the attack, but there are no deaths known of Israelis at the current time, Sullivan said.
"This attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective," Sullivan said.
Sullivan called Tuesday's events a "fluid situation" that involves continuous monitoring for further threats. He said that one of the key focuses of the U.S. is protecting service members in the region.
While addressing reporters, Sullivan said he would not share Biden's potential response to Iran when asked what the president meant by "severe consequences."
"I can tell you that he is tracking this minute to minute."

Hurricane Helene Update: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/41096388/hurricane-helene-102-dead-2-million-without-power-after-storm-destruction-in-6-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Over 100 fatalities</a> have occurred from Hurricane Helene and its aftermath. Several states continue to be impacted and are working on restoration.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden will travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, and Harris will travel to Georgia Wednesday and then North Carolina later in the week.
Jean-Pierre said the White House is using every tool to help in the response and will be there every step of the way.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas gave an update on the response during the briefing.
"This is a multi-billion dollar undertaking," Mayorkas said.
Mayorkas said around $1.7 billion has already been approved for individual assistance, and the rebuilding cost will be shared later, adding that it will be "extraordinarily costly."
When asked why Biden is going to Raleigh, North Carolina, and not a harder-hit area by the storm, Mayorkas said the president was trying not to interfere with the urgency of the response.
Port Strikes: Jean-Pierre said the president is also closely monitoring the port strikes and hopes the two parties can work through collective bargaining to prevent disruptions to the supply chain.
"I hope the American people have confidence in this president," Jean-Pierre said.
Jean-Pierre said the task force is meeting daily and will continue monitoring the situation.
Market Reaction: The price of gold and oil both spiked higher after the attack. The United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) was up 3% to $72.11 on Tuesday. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) was up 1% to $245.61.
News of the attacks sent major market indexes lower throughout the trading session. The&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) was down 0.9% to $568.62 on Tuesday. The ETF has hit new all-time highs in recent days and had a positive return in September for the first time in five years.
The&nbsp;SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), which tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average, was down 0.4% to $421.50.
The&nbsp;Invesco QQQ Trust&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which tracks the Nasdaq 100, was down 1.4% to $481.27.
Several of the indexes recovered slightly into the close after further attacks did not happen.
Overall, technology stocks were hit the hardest, with defense and oil stocks trading higher.
Bitcoin&nbsp;(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) is down 2% to $61,990.80 on Tuesday at the time of writing.

"A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran," a senior White House official said Tuesday morning, as <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/politics/iran-missile-attack-israel/index.html">reported </a>by CNN.
The White House has said that the country is "actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against" any attack.
CNN reported that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met with top national security officials Tuesday to discuss plans on how to respond to the attack that was expected on Israel.
"They reviewed the status of U.S. preparations to help Israel defend against attacks and protect U.S. personnel," White House spokesperson Emilie Simons said.
Israel has warned that Iran&#8217;s attack could trigger further escalations.
"There is no place in Iran that the long arm of Israel cannot reach, and that's true of the entire Middle East," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a speech last week.
On Tuesday, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the country is "Tracking events in the Middle East very closely." The Secretary of State said the U.S. is "committed to Israel's defense.&#8221;
Market Reaction: The price of gold and oil both spiked higher after the attack. The United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) is up 4% to $72.39 on Tuesday. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) is up 1% to $245.99 on Tuesday.

Major indexes are lower following a report suggesting Iran could be preparing to attack Israel.

Stocks slid Monday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that future interest rate cuts would depend on economic data during his appearance at the National Association of Business Economics. While Powell noted inflation is moving closer to the Fed&#8217;s 2% target and highlighted positive economic progress, his comments on data-driven rate decisions added uncertainty to the market just weeks after <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41068393/inflation-decline-strengthens-confidence-in-feds-interest-rate-cut-if-you-were-second-guessing-the-f">a recent rate cut.</a>
What Happened: Powell appeared at the National Association of Business Economics (NABE) in Nashville, Tennessee, where <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41085958/fed-chair-jerome-powell-set-to-speak-as-economists-raise-concerns-over-risks-arising-from-potential">he gave prepared remarks</a> and took part in a fireside conversation sharing details on the recent interest rate cut, inflation, the housing market and what's next for the Fed in November.
"Our economy is strong overall and has made progress," Powell said.
Powell said "inflation has eased" and "labor market conditions are solid."
The Fed Chairman said inflation is on a sustainable path back to 2%, and the recent 50-basis point rate cut shows growing confidence in the goal.
"Our focus was on bringing down inflation."
Powell said the Fed's patient approach to rate cuts "has paid dividends."
Speaking on the labor market, Powell said the strength of the labor market "can be maintained" and that unemployment rates are well within estimates.
"Over the past year, we have continued to see solid growth and healthy gains in the labor force and in productivity."
Powell said one of the Fed's main goals is not to have higher unemployment, as they bring inflation down.
"We have made a good deal of progress."

What's Next: Powell said the Federal Reserve is not on a pre-set course to decide on further rate cuts at the November meeting.
"Overall, the economy is in solid shape. We intend to use our tools to keep it there," Powell said.
The Fed Chairman said decisions will be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis.
Powell said the goal is to see income and savings rates go up after it appears that consumers are spending more than their income.
For future interest rate cuts, Powell said the process will play out over time and does not need to happen fast.
"Will depend on the data."
Powell said the rate cuts can happen slower or faster depending on how the economy moves.
Ahead of the November meeting there will be several key pieces of data, which include reports on inflation and unemployment. Powell said the Fed will "take everything into account."
"Looking forward, if the economy evolves broadly as expected, policy will move over time toward a more neutral stance."
Market Reaction: The stock market dripped slightly, following Powell's comments. The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the S&amp;P 500, was trading around $571.12 at the time Powell began talking and is trading at $570.50 at the time of publication.
The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) trades at $485.03 at the time of writing, down 0.35% on the day.

Powell Says Future Interest Rate Cuts Hinge On Data, Stocks Slip: 'Economy Is In Solid Shape, We Intend To Use Our Tools To Keep It There'

The Federal Reserve&#8217;s preferred measure of inflation in August came in below expectations, showing a decline from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/08/40650834/feds-preferred-inflation-gauge-falls-short-of-expectations-in-july-personal-spend">July&#8217;s inflation rate.</a>
According to government data released Friday, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index increased by 2.2% in August compared to the same period last year. The reading was below the 2.3% analysts were expecting and a drop from July&#8217;s 2.5%. 
The core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was 2.7% year-over-year in August, matching analyst expectations and 0.1% higher than July&#8217;s number.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Personal Income And Outlays For August: Key Highlights</h3>
<ul>
<li>Personal income increased by $50.5 billion (0.2%) in August, with disposable personal income up $34.2 billion (0.2%) and personal consumption expenditures up $47.2 billion (0.2%).</li>
<li>The PCE price index rose 0.1% in August, with a 0.1% increase in core inflation excluding food and energy. Real DPI and real PCE both increased by 0.1%.</li>
<li>Goods spending decreased by $7.6 billion, while services spending surged by $54.8 billion, primarily in housing and financial services. Motor vehicle purchases saw the largest decline in goods.</li>
<li>The PCE price index is up 2.2% year-over-year, with a 2.7% increase excluding food and energy. Energy prices fell by 5%, while food prices rose by 1.1%.</li>
<li>Personal saving rate stood at 4.8%, with personal saving totaling $1.05 trillion in August. Personal outlays increased by $48.3 billion.</li>

The U.S dollar index, as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), rose 0.2% after the release. 
Futures on major U.S. equity indices soared in premarket trading Friday. Contracts on the S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), were 0.22% higher. Futures on the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose 0.3%, while futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, tracked by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), were 0.17% higher premarket.

In August, the key drivers of inflation primarily stemmed from an increase in the cost of services, particularly in the housing, financial services, and insurance sectors. These categories saw the most significant price growth, contributing to the overall PCE index rise. Spending on services continued to rise, reflecting both higher demand and increasing service costs. On the other hand, goods experienced a slight decline in prices, which somewhat balanced out the overall inflationary pressure.
Energy prices, particularly for gasoline and other energy-related goods, continued their downward trend in August, moderating overall inflation. Energy prices fell significantly compared to the same time last year, which helped to temper the impact of rising prices in other categories. This was in stark contrast to earlier periods when energy costs had been a more substantial inflationary driver.
Food prices saw a modest increase in August, though their contribution to inflation was relatively mild compared to other categories. The food sector&#8217;s price rise was driven mainly by off-premises consumption, such as groceries, while restaurant and dining prices remained more stable. These food price increases, while noticeable, did not have as large of an impact on overall inflation as the service sector did.
Core inflation, which excludes the volatile categories of food and energy, remained steady. This was largely due to persistent price increases in durable goods, like automobiles, and ongoing inflation in service categories. Even though goods prices decreased slightly, the overall inflationary trend was influenced by steady price pressures in essential service sectors, contributing to the sustained core inflation rate in August.

Fed's Preferred Inflation Gauge Comes In Below Expectations For August, Easing Concerns About Rising Prices

The S&amp;P 500 reached record highs during Wednesday morning trading in New York, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 climbed past the 20,000-point mark, a level last <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-tech-stocks">seen on July 17.</a>
Semiconductor stocks outperformed, driven by anticipation of Micron Technology Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>) earnings report, due after the market close on Wednesday.
Yet, Wall Street showed sideways performance across major indices as investors cautiously digested positive stimulus news from China, which boosted market sentiment on Tuesday, and looked ahead to upcoming economic data.
On Thursday, investors will turn their attention to the final second-quarter gross domestic product report. The second estimate already showed the U.S. economy growing at a robust 3% pace for the quarter ending in June.

S&P 500 Hits All-Time Highs, Nasdaq 100 Tops 20K Ahead Of Key Economic Data: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

Market expectations for the Federal Reserve's next interest rate move could gain more clarity as early as this Friday, when a U.S. government agency releases a key inflation metric <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/inflation">closely monitored by policymakers.</a>
The Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) price index report, scheduled for release on Friday, Sept. 27, at 8:30 a.m. ET, will provide critical insights into August&#8217;s inflation trends.
As the Fed&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge, the PCE is seen as a crucial indicator that could influence decisions on whether another rate cut will occur at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Nov. 7.
Currently, market-implied probabilities suggest a 60% chance that the Fed will enact a back-to-back 50-basis-point rate cut in November. The remaining odds are favoring a more modest reduction of 25 basis points, as per the CME FedWatch tool. However, this outlook could shift dramatically depending on how the upcoming PCE data performs.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fed&#8217;s Confidence In Inflation Trajectory</h3>
&#8220;I estimate that the August PCE report will be very low,&#8221; Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller recently said. Earlier in the month, Waller reflected on July's PCE data, noting that the 6- and 3-month annualized rates stood at 2.6% and 1.7%, respectively.
"These numbers are good news and suggest that our restrictive policy stance has put us on the right path to attain our 2% inflation target," he added.
These comments, alongside the Fed&#8217;s focus on achieving its inflation goal, imply that another softer inflation reading could increase the likelihood of a back-to-back 50-basis-point rate cut in November. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">August PCE Report: What Do Economists Expect? </h3>
<ul>
<li>Economist consensus, as tracked by TradingEconomics, predicts that annual headline PCE inflation will fall from 2.5% in July to 2.3% in August, marking the lowest inflation rate since February 2021.</li>
<li>On a month-over-month basis, the headline figure is expected to rise by just 0.1%, a slowdown from July's 0.2% increase.</li>
<li>When excluding volatile food and energy prices, core PCE inflation is forecast to rise slightly, from 2.6% year-over-year in July to 2.7% in August.</li>
<li>On a monthly basis, core PCE inflation is projected to maintain its 0.2% growth rate, consistent with the previous month.</li>
</ul>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: A Look Back at Previous PCE Reports</h3>
In the last two PCE reports, the U.S. stock market responded positively as the data indicated easing inflation.
When the July PCE report, released on Aug. 30, came in below expectations, it sparked a stock rally. The S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), surged 1%, closing at a record high. Meanwhile, tech stocks, represented by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), outperformed, gaining 1.2%.
The June PCE report, released on July 26, met expectations, which helped boost investor confidence in the disinflation narrative. The S&amp;P 500 rose 1.1%, while the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) jumped 1.6%.

Wall Street inched higher on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq 100 outperforming other major indices, while cyclical sectors linked to metals and industrial commodities saw strong gains, fueled by a surprise stimulus package <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/09/41003814/chinese-stocks-jump-as-central-bank-unveils-major-stimulus-to-spur-economy-a-step-in-the-right-direc">from China&#8217;s central bank.</a>
The People&#8217;s Bank of China (PBOC) unveiled a series of aggressive measures, including cuts to the reserve requirement ratio (RRR) for banks and a reduction in the seven-day repo rate, following a recent cut to the 14-day reverse repo rate. These moves are expected to inject roughly $140 billion (1 trillion yuan) into the banking system, providing banks with additional liquidity to boost lending.
Chinese equities skyrocketed on the news, with the iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) soaring over 8%, marking its largest single-day gain since March 2022. 
Commodities followed suit with copper and silver climbing more than 3% each, while gold rose 0.7%, hitting record highs for the fourth consecutive session.
The Nasdaq 100 posted a 0.5% gain, leading U.S. indices, while the S&amp;P 500 remained nearly flat, hovering just shy of its all-time highs. 
The U.S. dollar weakened by 0.4% following a lower-than-expected September consumer confidence report from the Conference Board. This data has bolstered expectations for a potential 50-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve in November.
Treasury yields fell on short-term maturities, while longer-dated yields held steady. Oil prices climbed 1.2%, though concerns about U.S. demand lingered due to the disappointing consumer confidence figures.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) slipped 0.2% failing to join the China-led rally across other risk assets.

A widely followed private sector survey by S&amp;P Global revealed that output growth slightly exceeded expectations in September, buoyed by stronger services activity. However, the report also signaled a reawakening of inflationary pressures, raising concerns about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/broad-u-s-equity-etfs/24/09/40965082/feds-historic-dissenter-bowman-says-smaller-interest-rate-cut-was-justified-we-have-no">future monetary policy moves.</a>
The latest betting-implied odds from Polymarket show Kamala Harris at 51% to win the 2024 U.S. presidential election, surpassing former President Donald Trump, who has seen his consensus slips in recent weeks.
Among major assets, gold continues its upward momentum, setting new all-time highs as investors flock to safe-haven assets amid global uncertainty.
Meanwhile, natural gas prices spiked over 4%, hitting a three-month high early Monday. The rise follows the formation of another storm in the Gulf of Mexico, which threatens to further disrupt supply chains already impacted by Hurricane Francine.
The geopolitical situation in the Middle East remains tense, with Israel targeting new Hezbollah sites in Lebanon and the U.S. sending additional military troops to the region amid rising conflict.

US Stocks Stall, Gold Updates Record Highs, Tesla Rallies: What's Driving Markets Monday?

Friday was a lackluster session on Wall Street, with major U.S. averages lingering in negative territory at midday trading in New York. This session coincided with the simultaneous expiration of a large volume of options and futures contracts, commonly referred <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40959748/exclusive-options-expert-warns-of-terrible-week-after-fridays-triple-witching">to as &#8220;triple witching.&#8221;</a>
However, rather than a sharp spike in volatility, stocks edged only slightly lower, failing to trigger a rise in the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX).
Investor sentiment remained defensive, with 10 out of 11 sectors of the S&amp;P 500 falling, while utilities were the only sector to post a positive performance.
Dovish remarks from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller indicated that he expects &#8220;very low&#8221; August Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data. 
Waller also hinted at the possibility of a 25 basis point rate cut in the next meeting or two if the data continues to come in as expected, with a stronger size of cut if the labor market weakens and inflation softens more rapidly.
Waller's comments sent gold surging past $2,600 per ounce, marking new all-time highs.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) remained stable at $63,000.

What To Know: Wednesday&#8217;s&nbsp;0.5% rate cut brings the&nbsp;target fed funds rate&nbsp;to a new range&nbsp;between 4.75% and 5%, down from a 23-year high of 5.25% to 5.5%. It&#8217;s also the first rate cut since March 2020.
The fed funds rate has been sitting at a range between&nbsp;5.25% and 5.5%&nbsp;since the central bank last hiked in July 2023.

According to CME&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">FedWatch tool</a>, the market was projecting a 61% chance of a larger 0.5% rate cut heading into the meeting versus a 39% chance of a smaller 0.25% cut.

S&P 500 Briefly Hits Record High Just Ahead Of Fed Rate Cut, Extends 7-Day Winning Streak: Tuesday's Top 5 Gainers

Wall Street experienced a slightly positive session Tuesday, supported by investor optimism as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) kicked off its two-day meeting, expected to deliver the first interest rate cut in over <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/40878710/investors-bet-on-50-basis-point-rate-cut-wall-street-analysts-urge-caution-this-is-">four years on Wednesday.</a>
The session&#8217;s notable performers were small caps, with the Russell 2000 index surging about 1.3%, targeting its highest close since early August and outperforming larger-cap indices.
Among industries, solar, clean energy and regional banks led gains as traders eyed pockets of the markets that would benefit from lower interest rates.
On the macro front, August retail sales provided an upside surprise, growing by 0.1% month-over-month compared to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/09/40902634/retail-spending-remains-on-solid-footing-but-fed-must-weigh-rate-cuts-impact-on-workers-says-economi">the expected 0.2% decline</a>. This stronger-than-anticipated data slightly reduced the likelihood of a more aggressive 50-basis-point rate cut, with market-implied probabilities for such a move slipping from 67% to 63%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Short-dated Treasury yields rose as expectations for a substantial rate cut moderated. Meanwhile, the dollar strengthened, gaining 0.2%. 
In the commodities market, gold retreated 0.7% from Monday&#8217;s record-high close. Oil prices increased by 1.3% following escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Reports indicate a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/specialty-etfs/24/09/40903888/simultaneous-pager-explosions-across-lebanon-leave-over-1-000-hezbollah-militants-wounded"> coordinated attack in Lebanon</a> led to thousands of pagers linked to Hezbollah militants being detonated, resulting in numerous casualties within the Iran-backed organization.
Additionally, Iran&#8217;s ambassador to Lebanon is reportedly injured, though the official responsibility for the attack remains unclaimed.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) jumped over 4%, buoyed by positive ETF inflows, signaling renewed investor interest in the digital asset space as interest rates shift.

3 Predictions For The Fourth Quarter

The S&P 500 (SPY) is up over 20% this year and all seems right with the world. However, you should be aware of one major red light for the market that may prevent further gains. Steve Reitmeister spells it out in his latest commentary below... Most of what lies before us as stock investors are green lights to race ahead.
However...and it's a big HOWEVER, there is one flashing red light that we need to appreciate in order to invest more successfully in the months ahead.
We will talk about that red light in detail leading to an investment plan that should help us handily top the market going forward.
Market Outlook
Let's start by reviewing the bright green lights for investors at this time:
<ul>
<li>Just a few weeks shy of 24 months into new bull market that started October 2022. History shows the average bull market to last 63 months so good reason to believe there is plenty of time left on the clock.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>"Don't Fight the Fed" This is the famed investor battle cry when the Fed is lowering rates because it is a catalyst for future economic growth that begets higher corporate earnings...and most importantly...higher share prices. This party officially got started at the September 18th Fed meeting as they announced the first cut of 50 basis points with expectations for another 150 basis point worth of cuts by the end of 2025. Hard not to be bullish with the Fed finally on our side.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Typically, the Fed is cutting rates to bolster a flagging economy...often in the midst of a recession. Amazingly GDP is growing at a healthy pace with the GDPNow model from the Atlanta Fed pointing to above trend +2.9% growth in Q3. Or to put it another way, there is no recession in sight and little reason to fear meaningful stock downside besides the occasional pullback or correction that happens quite often during a long term bull market cycle.</li>
</ul>
No doubt you are finding it hard to be worried about your stock investments with the above green lights in place. So that is why I now need to share the most important red light at this time. That being the current valuation of stocks based upon market cap in the chart below:

The valuation of mega caps (pink line) is MORBIDLY OBESE compared to historical norms. No...its not quite 1999 internet bubble valuations...but it is a level of valuation that should not hold up and would fully expect those stocks (like the Magnificent 7) to underperform going forward to get their valuations down to size.
Large caps as a whole (red line) are what I would call fully valued at this stage. The key ingredient to move substantially higher would be for earnings growth to rev up after 2 lackluster years. Gladly Wall Street analysts do see that happening later in 2025 as the benefits of lower rates takes hold. So, at best this group of larger stocks will see modest returns in the year ahead. But breakeven wouldn't surprise me either.
This leads us to a focus on small (green line) and mid caps (blue line) as the place to find value and future outperformance. Going back 100 years these stocks have a firm lead over their large cap peers in terms of annual gains. But that has not been the case for the better part of the last 4 years.
In September you could see the tide turning as the surety of rate cuts were on the way, investors made a massive rotation to smaller stocks which have outperformed this month. This Risk On shift is logical and should continue given the much better value proposition.
I will go on record now saying that I don't think the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) makes it much higher than 6,000 in 2025. In fact, we may touch that level before we close out 2024 with the benefit of the typical post election rally followed by a touch of Santa Claus rally.
This means that 2025 is likely a flat year for large caps. So those who want outperformance should concentrate in small and mid cap stocks with the right blend of earnings growth and attractive valuation.

Is There a Red Light for the Stock Market?

The Fed did their part to finally start lowering rates with that stocks burst higher with the S&P 500 (SPY) making a new all time high. Since then it has not all been "rainbows and lollipops" which begs the question: Where do stocks head from here? Steve Reitmeister will answer that question in the article below... The Fed delivered on expectations to start rate cutting with a solid 50 point basis move on Wednesday. Along with that was the expectation for another 150 points of reduction to be served up by the end of 2025.
This was more dovish than expected which helped push the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) to new highs. Even more appealing was the broadening out of gains from just a handful of mega caps to many small and mid cap stocks.
Or to put it another way...the bull market for all has finally begun.
Let's spend some time today looking into the specifics of this Fed decision and what lies ahead for investors. That will be the focus of today's Reitmeister Total Return commentary.
Market Outlook
Here is the key excerpt from my commentary last week sharing <a href="https://stocknews.com/news/spy-inx-dia-iwm-qqq-3-paths-for-stocks-after-fed-meeting/">3 Paths for Stocks AFTER the Fed Meeting.</a> I explain that this path was the most probable:
"50 Point Cut + But Cautious
This is the most likely outcome as right now investors put 63% odds on a 50 basis point cut being served up. Then combine this with typical Fed speak on how their next move would be based on the data and thus have no prescribed path for future cuts ordained.
Because this is the assumed outcome, then investors might push higher for a session or two in order to make new highs. But really much of this move is already baked into the cake of current stock prices. This would put each next Fed meeting into play as a key catalyst for what happens next.
The more dovish they become to cut rates faster...the more bullish for stocks. And the more cautious they are...the more likely stocks have a hard time moving substantially higher than now."
I think the key section is that last paragraph. So please review again.
Even though Powell was his ever "data dependent" self...it was still a more dovish outcome than many expected. So there may be a bit more upside to this move going into year end. (More on that at the end of this Market Outlook section).
Now let me share the notes I took to summarize the event for a webinar I gave later that afternoon:

<li>50 basis points...investors immediately hit the buy button on that news.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Dot plot about future path of rate cuts? Shows the consensus around 3.25% by end of 2025 which is 1.5% lower than now. But not much lower thereafter.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Anything else in the Summary of Economic Projections (SEP)? Pretty much the same as last time. Still predicting soft landing with a pretty flat lined 2.0% GDP projection for every year between 2024 and 2025.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Unemployment stays aloft at 4.4% by end of 2025 and then comes down only slightly over next 2 years</li>
<li>I would call this a muddle through outlook. Which likely explains why they don't plan on bringing rates down much because if the economy softens at any point, then they will have some ammo at their disposal to lower rates and pick up pace of economy.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>How dovish vs. cautious was Powell about next steps? Balanced which was to be expected. The key is about their dual mandate (full employment and stable prices). Any further weakness to employment will likely have them cut faster even if inflation not easing as fast as hoped for.
<ul>
<li>Data dependent language as expected.</li>
<li>My bet is that they plan on going 50 basis points every 2-3 meetings allowing them to be cautious. But really that is not much different than doing 25 every meeting for a while.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<li>How does this effect my investment plan? Exactly as expected...no change</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>General agreement between Fed and the market after investors were too optimistic too early about rate cuts. Nice to have alignment.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>They believe they are right on time with this cut. Not late or in a rush as some think the 50 basis point cut implies. I agree with this statement when you appreciate that inflation is still somewhat elevated...but given lagged effects on track to get inflation down to size without undue harm to the jobs market.</li>
</ul>

Trading Plan 
At this stage I think that 6,000 is a possible peak for the S&amp;P 500 this year. However, it should be a spot of firm resistance where much of 2025 is fought over that same battleground.
More importantly is for small and mid caps to outperform going forward and thus those indices should likely outpace the returns of their large cap peers. As this valuation chart shows mega caps (pink) are overvalued...large caps (red) are fully valued...and small (green) and mid caps (blue) are undervalued. Thus, naturally they are the groups to overweight now:

Indeed, small and mid caps have outperformed of late. Pretty much true for the past month.
More importantly, that is the most natural outcome during a bull market as investors should be more focused on smaller companies that typically have more impressive growth profiles. What's even better at this moment is that the growth comes with a lower valuation making all the more attractive.

Where Do Stocks Head from Here?

There are 3 very different paths for stocks following the Wednesday 9/18 Fed meeting. Some are quite bullish for the S&P 500 (SPY). And 1 outcome would spark a nasty sell off for stocks. Read on below to prepare your portfolio for what comes next... There is only 1 thing that matters at this moment for investors. And that is the outcome from the Fed's 9/18 meeting which is expected to be the start of rate cuts.
This explains why investors flirted with new all time highs for the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) on Tuesday as they await the Fed's decision on Wednesday.
I see 3 possible outcomes...each with different reactions from investors.
Thus, our time is best spent today reviewing these 3 divergent paths along with a trading plan for each to stay on the right side of the action. That will be the focus of this Reitmeister Total Return commentary.
Market Outlook
All signs point to the first rate cut being served up by the Fed at 2pm ET on Wednesday September 18th. This creates 3 paths of what they could do...each eliciting a different reaction from investors. We will review them all below:
50 Point Cut + Hot to Cut Again
This is the most bullish outcome as it would say that the Fed waves a "Mission Accomplished" banner on the job to bring inflation down to size and thus want to unwind high rates as fast as possible. This would be the best to spark economic growth which is why it would be most beneficial for stock prices.
Unfortunately, this is least likely of the 3 outcomes as the academics at the Fed are naturally cautious and slow to react. However, if they did surprise us with this super-dovish tilt, then we should all be prepared for an extended bull run higher with focus on the Risk On aggressive stocks.
50 Point Cut + But Cautious
This is the most likely outcome as right now investors put 63% odds on a 50 basis point cut being served up. Then combine this with typical Fed speak on how their next move would be based on the data and thus have no prescribed path for future cuts ordained.
Because this is the assumed outcome, then investors might push higher for a session or two in order to make new highs. But really much of this move is already baked into the cake of current stock prices. This would put each next Fed meeting into play as a key catalyst for what happens next.

25 Point Cut + But Cautious
This is the tamer version of the last path. The even milder 25 point cut would signal to investors that they are going at this very slowly and patiently.
I would not be surprised if stocks sold off on this news as it means it will take much longer for truly low rates to be in hand to boost the economy and earnings growth. Like above it makes each successive Fed meeting that much more important for them to increase their resolve to bring down rates faster.
The downside for stock prices on this move is likely only 2-3% at most. But just like the pullbacks to start August and September, it would be short lived as there is not really a need to be bearish. So, this would present another buy the dip opportunity.
Yes, there is a 4th possibility which is getting no rate cut at all. But I think the odds are so low that its barely worth discussing.
To say the least, investors would be VERY DISSAPOINTED with a nastier 3-5% sell off as a near certainty. As the smoke clears investors would try to assess if this is just a 1 or 2 meeting delay...or if they are truly that far away from the first cut. The longer the delay to the first lower of rates...the deeper the stock sell off.
Again, that is probably not in the cards. This brings us back to the 2nd and 3rd options as the most likely. That being a 25 to 50 point cut in conjunction with the Feds typical cautious language about what comes to next.
In the short run this creates a mixed outlook for stock prices. But looking out 2+ months I don't think greatly alters the path of the stock market. And thus would not cause a great change in our investment approach to line our portfolio with the stocks with the most appealing upside potential.

What To Do Next?

3 Paths for Stocks AFTER Fed Meeting

The weekly chart shows some resistance against the 200-week moving average. If it picks up from here, we are looking at another even scarier potential.

Read on below for more... In the famed Stock Traders Almanac, author Jeffrey Hirsch shares statistics on how September is the worst month of the year for stocks. Investment commentators love to site these facts to get people on edge.
However, as you dig into the stats you find its all pretty benign including the fact that stocks actually rise about half the time. There were just a few really bad plunges that occurred in September, like the Financial Crisis of 2008, which pull down the average monthly return.
As we close the books on September 2024 the S&amp;P 500 (SPY) tallied another +2.1% gain to make new record highs at 5,762. This leaves just one quarter to go on this quite bullish year of 2024. So let's discuss what likely happens from here.
Market Outlook
My thoughts on 2025 have been well spelled out in my ongoing commentary. With my most complete view and trading plan shared in this recent presentation: <a href="https://www.wallstreetzen.com/blog/stock-market-outlook-webinar-replay/">2025 Stock Market Outlook</a>.
However, I haven't spoken enough on the near term outlook for stocks. For example, what do I expect into the year end?
Right now, I see 3 catalysts in play to have stocks making new highs before we close the books on 2024.
First, and most important, is that we are clearly in a bull market cycle. The recent decision to cut rates only solidifies this view as lower rates in the future should bolster the economy which begets higher corporate earnings...and that is a pretty natural elixir that creates higher share prices.
The second catalyst on the horizon is the likely surge that comes after the Presidential election. Historically stocks explode higher in the wake of the election because the uncertainty over who wins has been removed. This has more investors hitting the buy button.
To be clear, history shows it makes no difference who wins. Democrat or Republican the market applauds the removal of the question mark with a hefty rally.
The third and final catalyst to close out the year is the typical Santa Claus rally. This is such a time honored tradition explaining why December is historically one of the best months of the year for stock investing.
The sum total of these catalysts gives us a real shot to hit 6,000 for the S&amp;P 500 this year. That would point to an additional 4.1% gain for the index which is quite doable in that time frame.
It also wouldn't surprise me to see the small cap index, Russell 2000, do 2X better than their large cap peers as they continue to play catch up after a long time of large company dominance.
For as wonderful as all that sounds, I think the above is the last serious surge for the S&amp;P 500. As shared in my <a href="https://www.wallstreetzen.com/blog/stock-market-outlook-webinar-replay/">2025 Stock Market Outlook</a>, we will be entering year 3 of this bull market which historically has led to tame results.
I believe that 6,000 will prove to be an area of strong resistance that we wrestle with all of next year. This is another way of saying don't expect the Magnificent 7 to be the "Easy Button" for investing as it has the last several years.
The valuations for these stocks are 50 to 100% above what is considered fair value based on their earnings outlooks. So I don't expect them to crash. Instead I expect them to go for a year or two where earnings rise to help bring valuations a bit more down to size.
This also means that investors will have to put in a little more work to find stocks likely to outperform.
