Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's unexpectedly hawkish remarks on Thursday sent markets into a tailspin. Major U.S. equity indices closed in the red, and the dollar soared for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">a fifth consecutive session</a>.
In a speech to Dallas business leaders, Powell highlighted the remarkable strength of the U.S. economy, indicating that there's no need for the Fed to &#8220;be in a hurry to lower rates.&#8221;
He reiterated the central bank's commitment to reaching its 2% inflation target, stressing the need for careful decision-making as inflation remains above desired levels.
He highlighted productivity gains, which he said have &#8220;grown faster over the past five years than at any point in the two decades preceding the pandemic,&#8221; positioning the U.S. economy as &#8220;the best-performing among major economies.&#8221;
Addressing the October <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41971830/producer-inflation-rises-more-than-expected-in-october-should-traders-rethink-interest-rate-cut-path">producer price index (PPI) uptick</a>, Powell labeled it &#8220;more than an upward bump&#8221; but maintained confidence in the trajectory toward the 2% inflation goal.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Markets Reassess Interest Rate Path: Traders Are Less Confident On A December Cut</h3>
Powell&#8217;s comments impacted the interest-rate market, with fed futures now reflecting a reduced likelihood of a 25-basis-point cut in December. 
The CME FedWatch tool shows the odds of such a move dropped to 58%, sharply down from around 80% earlier in the day.
The S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), closed down 0.6%, fully erasing gains from last week&#8217;s rate cut. Energy was the only sector in positive territory, rising 0.4%, while industrials and health care led declines, each down 0.7%.
Top performers in the S&amp;P 500 included Tapestry Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TPR#NYSE">TPR</a>), Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WYNN#NASDAQ">WYNN</a>), and First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>), which rose 12.8%, 8.7%, and 7.2%, respectively. Among the laggards were Leidos Holdings Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LDOS#NYSE">LDOS</a>) and Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>), down 13.6% and 11.4%, respectively.
Tech stocks, as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), declined 0.7%, marking a fourth consecutive loss. Blue chips followed by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipped 0.5%, while small caps in the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) underperformed, falling 1.3%.
The dollar continued to attract liquidity, with the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) logging a fifth consecutive gain, reaching levels last seen in late October 2023.
Treasury yields also rose, with the 10-year yield closing at 4.46%. Gold, tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), marked its fifth straight loss.
In crypto markets, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was 1.7% lower in the past 24 hours to $88,013 at 5:21 p.m. ET, on track for its worst day in November.

BofA Securities analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich reiterated a Buy rating on Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) with a price target of $120.
Ehrlich maintained a positive outlook on Disney following its mixed fiscal fourth-quarter results, focusing on its guidance for fiscal 2025 and beyond.
Disney&#8217;s fiscal fourth-quarter revenue grew 6.3% year-over-year to $22.6 billion, slightly above Ehrlich&#8217;s forecast of $22.3 billion. Operating income (OI) increased by 16% to $3.66 billion but fell below her estimated $3.70 billion. Adjusted EPS came in at $1.14, surpassing the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/41971559/disneys-q4-boosted-by-streaming-gains-strong-box-office-and-solid-parks-performance">analyst&#8217;s forecast of $1.11.</a>
By segment, Entertainment OI reached $1.07 billion ($1.06 billion expectations), while Sports OI came in lower at $929 million versus the estimated $966 million. Experiences OI matched the forecast at $1.7 billion.
Disney provided its initial guidance for fiscal 2025, targeting high single-digit growth in adjusted EPS, estimated between $5.26 and $5.41, up from the fiscal 2024 base of $4.97. Ehrlich expects double-digit OI growth in the Entertainment segment, 13% OI growth in Sports, and 6-8% growth in Experiences.

The company aims for $15 billion in operating cash flow, with $8 billion allocated for capital expenditures, implying about $7 billion in free cash flow. Additionally, Disney plans to increase dividends in line with earnings growth and conduct $3 billion in share repurchases. For fiscal 2026 and 2027, Ehrlich forecasts double-digit EPS growth, driven by improved margins in the streaming segment and overall earnings expansion.
In the Entertainment division, Linear Networks OI was lower at $498 million, impacted by a decline in domestic revenue due to non-renewed carriage agreements and reduced advertising income. Conversely, Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) OI exceeded estimates, reaching $253 million, boosted by a net increase of 4.4 million Disney+ subscribers and higher subscription revenue from recent price hikes. 
Content Sales and Licensing outperformed expectations with $316 million in OI, fueled by strong quarterly theatrical releases. Experiences revenue reached $8.24 billion, driven by 3% domestic growth, although international revenue declined by 5%. Ehrlich noted increased costs from inflation and technology investments, which slightly compressed margins.
The Sports segment reported flat year-over-year revenue of $3.91 billion, slightly below the $3.98 billion estimate. Operating income declined by 5.3% to $929 million due to lower affiliate revenue linked to decreased subscribers. Higher advertising revenue and increased programming costs partially offset this decline.
Ehrlich valued the stock at 22 times her calendar 2025 adjusted EPS estimate. The premium reflects Disney&#8217;s strong asset portfolio, including leading content and top-tier theme parks. Ehrlich pointed to two critical near-term catalysts: profitability improvements in the DTC segment and a recovery in the parks business, justifying the multiple valuations in line with Disney&#8217;s historical premium.
Walt Disney stock gained 21% year-to-date. Signs of a waning Trump-led rally emerged Thursday as investors assessed the economic outlook and awaited potential signals on the interest-rate path from the upcoming Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8216;s speech in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/jerome-powell">Dallas at 3 p.m. ET. </a>
Inflation data from the past two days provided mixed signals: consumer prices met expectations, while producer prices slightly exceeded forecasts, with both indicators showing a year-over-year uptick in October.
Despite this inflation data, markets remain confident the Fed will continue easing, pricing in an 80% likelihood of a December rate cut.
Wall Street&#8217;s major indices were in the red by midday, with the S&amp;P 500 down 0.3% and small-cap stocks lagging behind large-caps.
The U.S. dollar index ticked up 0.1%, even as Treasury yields declined. Bonds outperformed equities, with the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) climbing 1.2%.
Gold edged 0.2% lower, while oil rose 0.2%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) saw its rally stall, dropping 1.8%.

Bitcoin again captured headlines as it surged past $93,000, lifting its market capitalization to $1.8 trillion and fueling a wave of enthusiasm across crypto markets, with Dogecoin up over 12%.
The Consumer Price Index met expectations in October, with the annual headline rate increasing to 2.6% and the core <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41938762/october-inflation-rate-rises-to-2-6-as-expected-december-interest-rate-cut-remains-uncertain">rate steady at 3.3%. </a>
The report alleviated concerns over a potential rate pause in December, driving market odds for a 25-basis-point cut from 58% to 82%, as per the CME FedWatch tool. Treasury yields eased slightly in response to the report.
By midday in New York, all major U.S. equity indices were in slightly positive territory, although with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperforming. Leading sectors included consumer discretionary and real estate, while utilities and health care lagged.
In political developments, U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-SD) was elected as the new majority leader in a secret ballot.
The U.S. dollar, tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), hit its highest level since November 2023, marking a fresh one-year high.
Gold dipped 0.6%, on track for a fourth consecutive loss.

Economists predict that October's Consumer Price Index (CPI) data will show a modest uptick in inflation, potentially halting the downward trend observed over the past six months. 
The economist consensus points to a 2.6% year-over-year rise in headline inflation, up from 2.4% in September. 
If accurate, this increase would mark the first inflation acceleration since March and could dampen hopes of a sustained disinflationary trend.
On a monthly basis, headline inflation is expected to rise by 0.2%, in line with September&#8217;s reading. Meanwhile, core inflation—which excludes volatile food and energy prices and provides a clearer view of underlying price pressures—is forecasted to remain steady at 3.3% year-over-year, with a 0.3% monthly gain. 
This resilience in core inflation could raise questions about the persistence of price pressures across key consumer sectors.

According to Stephen Juneau, an economist at Bank of America, "inflation is moving sideways after a period of substantial disinflation." 
Bank of America forecasts a slight monthly gain of 0.1% in headline CPI and a 0.3% rise in core CPI, which would keep annual rates unchanged at 2.4% and 3.3%, respectively.
While these numbers suggest inflation is not accelerating aggressively, Juneau cautions that the outlook could change if pro-growth fiscal policies, tariffs, and tighter immigration policies are enacted.
"We now see the risks as clearly tilted to the upside," he added, citing Trump's policy proposals as potential drivers of renewed inflationary pressures in the upcoming quarters.

Walker and Rindels expect "further disinflation in the pipeline over the next year from rebalancing in the auto, housing rental, and labor markets," but warn of potential "catch-up inflation" in areas like car insurance. 
Their forecast suggests that while the broader disinflationary trend might continue, pockets of inflation could persist, challenging the narrative of a quick return to low inflation.

If inflation data exceeds expectations, it could challenge the Federal Reserve's dovish stance. 
Fed Chair Jerome Powell has signaled openness to further rate cuts, with markets currently expecting a 25-basis-point reduction in December. Fed futures are currently assigning a 65% chance of a December rate cut, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
Yet, any signs of re-accelerating inflation could prompt the Fed to reconsider its easing timeline, especially if Trump's anticipated fiscal policies stoke demand-side inflation.
A higher-than-expected CPI reading could also weigh on risk assets, particularly if investors perceive that inflationary pressures could delay rate cuts or trigger a more cautious Fed.

Trump's Win Sends Indices To Record Highs; Financials, Small Caps Surge, Bitcoin Tops $75,000: What's Driving Markets Wednesday?

The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to record levels on Wednesday after Donald Trump was elected as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">the 47th U.S. president.</a>
In Congress, Republicans clinched a majority in the Senate, while the House race remains close. As of Wednesday morning&#8217;s tabulations, Republicans held 198 seats versus 180 for Democrats.
The S&amp;P 500 index, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), climbed 2% to 5,900 points, while the Dow soared over 3% to 43,500 points. The blue-chip index, monitored through the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), marked its biggest single-day gain since November 2022.
The financials and industrials sectors were the top performers, up 5.2% and 3%, respectively.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 witnessed smaller gains, up 1.8%, while small-cap stocks skyrocketed, with the Russell 2000 index spiking over 5%. 
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often called the &#8220;fear gauge,&#8221; plummeted 22%, indicating waning investor concerns amid post-election optimism.
Investors are responding positively to the prospect of more lenient tax policies under the upcoming Trump administration, though inflation risks and potential shifts in Federal Reserve policy highlighted by economists seem to be largely overlooked by the market for now.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economic Implications Of A Trump Presidency, Goldman Sachs Weighs In</h3>
&#8220;If Republicans secure a narrow House majority, this would likely enable a full extension of the 2017 tax cuts, set to expire in 2025, potentially with some reinstated business investment incentives,&#8221; wrote Jan Hatzius, Goldman Sachs&#8217; chief economist.
A Republican-controlled Congress may also drive increased federal spending, particularly on defense, Goldman Sachs indicated.
"We would expect Trump to impose additional tariffs averaging 20% on imports from China," Hatzius added, highlighting that this policy could provide a &#8220;one-time boost to core PCE inflation&#8221; and &#8220;a modest drag on GDP.&#8221;
Goldman Sachs projects that the incoming Trump administration would likely pursue a more relaxed approach to regulation, especially in energy, financial services, and labor. 
However, while antitrust oversight may soften somewhat, scrutiny of the tech sector is expected to persist.

SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust: Pivot points

The S&P 500 (SPY) has already reached an impressive goal of hitting 6,000. Yet you can see how much shares are struggling now up against this resistance. Steve Reitmeister shares his views on what comes next for the market and his top 10 stocks to stay on the right side of the action. As expected...
the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) made it to my year end target of 6,000. Gladly that goal was achieved on the early side with the close on November 11th.
And as expected...since then stocks have been consolidating under 6,000. Meaning that level is proving to be a spot of notable resistance.
A lot of what happens next has to do with the state of inflation and what that means for future Fed actions. Let's dig in on the latest data to see what those tea leaves tell us where stocks head next.
Market Outlook
This week we have received the 2 key inflation reports in CPI and PPI. I would not call either a positive for the further reigning in of inflation or what that means for the next move by the Fed.
Let's start with the CPI report on Tuesday that came in at 2.6% year over year. Unfortunately, that is higher than the previous reading of 2.4%. Also note that the Core Inflation report was stuck at the same reading as last month 3.3%.
You can appreciate why bond rates moved higher once again on that news back above 4.4% for the 10 Year Treasury.
Thursday's release of the forward looking PPI report did not improve the situation. Here is the chart for the core reading:

This chart is headed the wrong direction if your goal is lower inflation. Sure, we can say that the June spike is a fluke...but even with removing that outlier, there is a clear upward trend for Core PPI. Certainly this will be noticed by Fed officials which may have some being more cautious on the idea of cuts as we move ahead.
These same alarming trends were in place prior to the November cut. I honestly didn't expect them to take action until the anemic jobs report came at the beginning of the month. Given that maximum employment also part of their mandate is why rates were cut once again. I assure you that wasn't being done because inflation data is improving...cuz it ain't.
Looking ahead, the CME's Fed Watch tool is showing a 79% probability for another quarter point cut at the next Fed meeting on December 18. Plus, here is the picture for the June 2025 meeting to give you a longer term picture of what investors expect. Note that the current rate is the one on the far right 450-475 basis points.

I may not be a Fed official, but I do have an economics background which most stock/bond traders do not. And thus have a better understanding of the patience usually displayed by Fed officials while most traders act like petulant children who just want things to happen NOW!!!
The point is that I think there are fewer rate cuts on the horizon then viewed by the average investor. There are only 2 things that could change that view.
<ul>
<li>Inflation data does start coming down reversing recent troubling trends.</li>
<li>Unemployment starts rising making the Fed lower rates to make sure that does not get out of hand.</li>
</ul>
What does that mean for stock prices? 
6,000 could prove to be a stiffer point of resistance than many appreciate. It could put a lid on more upside this year. However, I sense that we will probably crack above with the benefit of a Santa Claus rally in late November and early December.
So maybe 6,100 is a reasonable year end target...maybe a touch higher. But even more important than that, it may lead to a stiff pullback or even correction in January as investors delay profit taking to the new year to delay the tax consequences.
That actually would be very rational. As in healthy.
The key is what happens after that. The rational choice would be a rotation to groups that are still attractive values. Namely small and mid cap stocks which on average have a PE 30% lower than their large cap peers.

Updated Stock Market Expectations

The S&P 500 (SPY) has already made new highs just above 6,000. However, that seems to be a point of stiff resistance. This begs the question of what happens next? And what should an investor do to stay on the right side of the action? Read on below for Steve Reitmeister's time answers and top 10 stocks. We have already reached my year end target of 6,000 for the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>). Even better, my belief that small caps would do at least 2X better has proven to be true as well.
This explains why the Reitmeister Total Return portfolio has "opened up a can of whoop ass" on the market with year to date gains of +30.73%.
This all begs the question as to what the end of the year looks? And what should investors do to be on the right side of the action? 
Answering these key questions will be the focus of commentary today.
Market Outlook
The time-honored saying is "The Trend is Your Friend".
So with the election solidified, economy on track and probable Santa Claus rally on the way in December, then there is little reason to doubt that stocks will keep pushing higher into the year end.
However, I think Monday's action gives a good taste of what the action looks like going forward starting with a view of performance by market cap:

As shared in the intro, smaller stocks are finally enjoying some time leading the bull market parade with larger stocks taking a back seat. Even more telling was the actual losses for the Mega Caps as it is fair to see their valuations are getting fairly stretched.
On top of that you have an interesting view by sector. In this case I prefer to show you results for the past week to appreciate what has been in favor since the election:

This is a very Risk On mix of stocks. Note that Technology is lagging. In fact, that sector was down -0.63% on Monday. This is a sign that investors might be done hitting the "Easy Button" with their stock investments which has led to obscene overvaluations for many of the popular tech names (especially mega cap tech).
Adding it altogether and I think the S&amp;P 500 maybe has upside to 6,200 at most with 6,100 being more likely. This points to a solid yet modest return to end the year.
Again, I think smaller stocks will continue to lead as they should be playing catch up after 4 straight years of underperformance to large caps. A 5-10% gain for that group to close out the year would not be a surprise to me.
This is a trend I expect to continue into 2025 where I think the S&amp;P 500 has low single digit gains on the year given that valuations are stretched (PE of 23).
Yet a 15-20% gain for the small cap index (Russell 2000) and 10-15% gain for mid caps is an appropriate action for next year given the groups much more modest PE of 16.
As shared with you guys in the past, the POWR Ratings is outstanding at picking stocks in any environment given the average annual return of +28.54%. However, its best years of outperformance are when value is in fashion...and when small caps lead the charge.
Both seem to be on tap for 2025 and thus strongly believe my portfolio focused on the POWR Ratings should continue to have another year of tremendous outperformance.

Where Do Stocks Go from Here?

The S&P 500 (SPY) has the petal to the medal after the election and 2nd Fed rate cut. However, stocks are now pressed up against serious resistance at 6,000 which begs the question of what happens next? Investment pro Steve Reitmeister shares his timely market views including a preview of his top 10 stocks. Get the full story below... Investors pressed pause in October with it being the first down month for the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) since April. This is very typical cautious behavior coming into a contentious Presidential election.
On Wednesday we cleared the hurdle of the Presidential Election. Next on Thursday we got the next round of accommodation from the Fed with another quarter point cut. Add all this together you can appreciate why stocks have sprinted to new highs just below 6,000.
What comes next? 
That will be the focus of today's conversation.
Market Outlook
I have been beating the drum that we will march up to 6,000 for the S&amp;P 500 before years end. That was back when stocks were closer to 5,700. All we needed to do was get the following 3 elements in place:
<ul>
<li>Clear conclusion to Presidential election (not a repeat of 2020)</li>
<li>Fed continue to lower rates with expectation of more rate cuts to come (11/7 second cut confirms this notion)</li>
<li>Seasonally beneficial Santa Claus rally for stocks</li>
</ul>
This week we got the first 2 bullets which pretty much guarantees the 3rd bullet of the Santa Claus rally will be served up. Yet at this stage 6,000 is not that much higher than Thursday's close of 5,973.
So yes, breaking above that mark is more likely than being stuck below given how much time we have left on the year. Maybe 6,100, even 6,200, is the more likely outcome for 2024.
Yet what I think is even more beneficial is the gains in small cap stocks which have woefully underperformed their large cap peers the past 4 years. That did take a very positive turn on Wednesday with the Russell 2000 rising +5.84% on the breakout session (almost 2.5X better than S&amp;P 500).
For as wonderful as all of this is, I think this is the last major bull run before we take an extended break in the new year.
This is not a call for a bear market either. Just a long due, healthy pause after such impressive gains in the first 2 years of this bull market that started October 2022 from a low of 3,491.
This pause should be mostly be for large caps where they are nearing a PE of 23 which is much higher than the long term average of 18. This group could use a little excess taken out. That could come from a reasonable correction. Or simply going sideways for a year with earnings growth helping to get the PE closer to 20.
Gladly there is still value in small and mid caps hovering closer to 16 PE as a group. This is below the long term average and offers tremendous value compared to their large cap peers.
The post election rally offers a preview of this shift to smaller stocks that I think extends well into 2025.

What Happens After 6,000 for Stocks?

The S&P 500 (SPY) has been stuck under the highs awaiting the election results. The biggest mystery is how soon results will be finalized. The second biggest concern is what the Fed will do at their 11/7 meeting. Steve Reitmeister shares his views on these things along with fresh market outlook and preview of his top 10 stocks to buy now. Today as I write commentary all focus is on the election. In particular, the incredibly close Presidential race that I hope to be resolved by Wednesday morning (as is the standard). Hopefully the nation is not dragged into another contentious post election debate like 2020.
Unfortunately, that unwelcome outcome is highly probable and would likely postpone any further bullish catalyst for stocks that normally comes with finalizing the results. Meaning that new highs for the S&amp;P 500 (<a href="https://stocknews.com/stock/SPY/">SPY</a>) will likely not come until the winner of the election is settled.
(Wednesday morning edit: Donald Trump is the clear winner to the election. Investors are celebrating this certainty with the typical post election rally. Not only is the S&amp;P 500 ready to make new highs, but even better is the 5-6% gains for small and mid cap stocks which should continue to outperform in the future after 4 years of large caps taking the lead.)
So, we will elide over the rest of the election topic and talk about the things that are typically more central to the investment conversation. That includes the recent economic data leading up to the next Fed rate decision meeting on November 7th.
Market Outlook
On the one hand we have 5 straight inflation reports that were did not show a decline in inflation. This includes the most recent data from the Fed's preferred indicator, Core PCE Price Index, which stayed locked at 2.7% year over year.
Then on Friday the Average Hourly Earnings component of the monthly jobs report showed that it remains too sticky at 4.1% year over year. Even worse was the month over month reading coming in at 0.4% when 0.3% was expected.
If the above was the only information in hand, I would say unequivocally that the Fed would not raise rates at the Wednesday November 7th meeting.
On the other hand, only 12,000 jobs were added in October according to that same Friday employment report. That is woefully under the 180,000 expected.
My first instinct is to say it's another faulty read that gets corrected down the line with a big positive revision. That's because no other employment indicator is showing this kind of weakness. For example, you would normally see a spike in weekly Jobless Claims leading up to this kind of result. That is not the case.
However, if there is some truth to this softness in employment, then yes, the Fed could very well lower rates another 25 basis points (which is the current consensus). That is because the Fed would need to heed the other half of their dual mandate which is to maintain full employment.
Do remember that there is a 6-12 month lagged effect on Fed rate changes. And the current rates are still restrictive. Thus, to not let unemployment become a bigger problem would compel them to lower rates now.
To be honest, there is very little difference between lowering rates 25 points per meeting or doing it 50 basis points every other meeting. Therefore, I think Fed officials would rather heed the street consensus of lowering by 25 basis points in November instead of holding off on that move which would likely disturb market conditions.
Adding it all up, we are still very much in the midst of a bull market. The key ingredients for the next bull run higher is partially about the Fed rate cut decisions...and partially about a seamless process to finalize the elections.
I believe it is best to stay bullish at this time and concentrate your portfolio in Risk On positions. That means overweight small and mid caps while underweighting large caps.
Plus go for more economically sensitive industries that would benefit from a lower rate environment; Industrials, Materials, Auto, Home Building, Finance and Consumer Discretionary.
