The price of leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) continues to hit new all-time highs, breaking several records since the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42109267/bitcoin-hits-new-all-time-high-above-98000-as-spot-etfs-crack-100-billion-net-asset-value-milestone"> 2024 presidential election.</a>
Investors who bought earlier this year or ahead of the election have generated strong profits, but nowhere near the gains that investors got being early believers in the cryptocurrency.
What Happened: In October 2008, pseudonymous&nbsp;Satoshi Nakamoto<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/22/08/28349295/understanding-bitcoins-whitepaper" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;published a whitepaper</a>&nbsp;titled &#8220;Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.&#8221; The whitepaper provided many key details and explained why Bitcoin was created.
In January 2009, Nakamoto mined the genesis block of the first 50 Bitcoins and the cryptocurrency was officially born.
When Bitcoin was released, there were only two ways to get the cryptocurrency: mine the Bitcoin yourself or use a peer-to-peer transaction.
Bitcointalk, a forum created by Nakamoto to host discussions on Bitcoin, was used for several transactions. The transactions were deemed risky at the time because they required trust from both parties and were mostly anonymous.
In October 2009, one of the first-ever recognized Bitcoin transactions happened when a Finnish computer science student sold 5,050 Bitcoin for $5.02 (which represented a value of $0.0009 for each Bitcoin), according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/investing/cryptocurrency/bitcoin-price-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Forbes</a>. The transaction took place on&nbsp;PayPal.
Less than a year later in May 2010, one of the most famous Bitcoin transactions of all time — and what is widely believed to be the first retail transaction — took place when programmer&nbsp;Laszlo Hanyecz&nbsp;sought out a person to buy him pizza in exchange for Bitcoin. A person in England subsequently spent around $41 to buy pizza from Papa John&#8217;s for Hanyecz in exchange for 10,000 Bitcoin. This represented a value of around $0.0041 for each Bitcoin.
It wasn&#8217;t until 2011 and after the launch of several major crypto exchanges that the cryptocurrency hit a price of $1.
In 2021, Bitcoin&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/23/12/36083106/heres-how-much-100-invested-in-bitcoin-today-will-be-worth-if-crypto-hits-new-all-time-hig" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hit an all-time high</a>&nbsp;of $68,789.63 as part of a year that saw increased interest in the leading cryptocurrency and many other cryptocurrencies.
In 2022, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies fell in value and interest with several notable cryptocurrency trading platforms declaring bankruptcy.
The<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/01/36514679/wall-street-enters-the-crypto-age-sec-issues-historic-approval-of-spot-bitcoin-etfs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;approval of Bitcoin ETFs&nbsp;</a>in 2024 has led to increased interest in Bitcoin once again and a surge in the price of the leading cryptocurrency.
Fast forward to today and Bitcoin is trading near the $100,000 milestone with a current price of $98,093.47 at the time of writing. Bitcoin hit a new all-time high of $99,014.21 earlier on Nov. 21, 2024.

Investing $1 in Bitcoin:&nbsp;Using the early transactions referenced above, a hypothetical investment in the early days could have provided quite the return for its holder, or in this case a &#8220;hodler.&#8221;
A $1 investment in Bitcoin at the time of the first transaction on PayPal would have netted 1,111.1111 Bitcoin.&nbsp;That investment would be worth $108,992,743.36 today based on a price of $98,093.47 for Bitcoin at the time of writing.
In contrast, a $1 investment in Bitcoin at the time of the Bitcoin-pizza transaction could have bought 243.9024 Bitcoin.&nbsp;That investment would be worth $23,925,232.76 today based on the same price of $98,093.47 for Bitcoin at the time of writing.
While investing in Bitcoin today might never be worth millions of dollars in the future, the hypothetical investment illustrated the large increase in the value of the leading cryptocurrency over time. Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/24/11/42017619/heres-how-much-100-in-bitcoin-could-be-worth-in-2030-if-cathie-woods-price-target-is-reached"> has a price target </a>of $3.8 million for Bitcoin by 2030.
A fixed supply of 21 million Bitcoin could also lead to further increases in the asset&#8217;s price as more people seek to take positions.
Many have predicted Bitcoin&#8217;s death over the years, but the cryptocurrency remains the leader in the space and has a market capitalization of over $1 trillion today.

Denmark is poised to cement its place as a leader in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/medical-cannabis">medical cannabis</a> regulation. On November 19, Minister of the Interior and Health Sophie Løhde <a href="https://www.ism.dk/nyheder/2024/november/regeringen-vil-goere-ordning-med-medicinsk-cannabis-paa-recept-permanent">proposed</a> making the country's medical cannabis trial scheme permanent, a bold move following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/23/10/35346758/europes-high-irish-gps-against-pot-switzerland-spain-share-data-on-cannabis-clubs-more">years of steady growth</a> in patient participation.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Medical Cannabis Success in Denmark</h4>
The trial scheme, introduced in 2018, aimed to provide patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and cancer access to medical cannabis treatments. Extended in 2021, the program is set to expire at the end of 2025. However, its success has been undeniable. Over the last three years, more than 20,000 prescriptions have been redeemed, and approximately 1,800 patients are currently benefiting from cannabis-based medicines.
Minister Løhde highlighted the program&#8217;s impact: "We see that many patients who receive medical cannabis prescriptions appear to benefit from the treatment. This includes cancer patients suffering from severe nausea after chemotherapy and people with multiple sclerosis experiencing intense pain."
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Road to Permanency</h4>
The government's proposal reflects its commitment to ensuring continued legal access to medical cannabis for patients. Minister Løhde emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, "We first need to hear the perspectives of the parties involved in the agreement."
On November 19, Løhde invited representatives from political groups behind the original agreement—SF, Liberal Alliance, Red-Green Alliance, Danish People&#8217;s Party, and the Alternative—to discuss the scheme's future.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Industry Support</h4>
Denmark's cannabis industry also welcomed the news. Thomas Skovlund Schnegelsberg, CEO of Danish MMJ producer Stenocare, expressed optimism about the proposal. "It is excellent news for patients and Stenocare that the government is now taking steps toward permanent legalization. We are confident that the future of medical cannabis treatment is in good hands," adding that "the permanent legalization will establish a clear framework for the future, offering clarity beyond December 2025 and justifying investments in new products that deliver value to both doctors and patients."
As negotiations unfold, Denmark appears ready to solidify its role as a pioneer in regulated medical cannabis, offering hope and legal options to patients across the country.

<li>First party and marketplace cloud storage services revenue grew approximately 43% year-over-year.</li>
<li>Record second quarter non-GAAP operating margin of 29%. </li>
<li>Returned $406 million to stockholders through share repurchases and cash dividends. </li>

Cryptocurrency Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) has soared over the past week, but remains well below the all-time highs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42018208/bitcoin-ethereum-dogecoin-pepe-shiba-inu-benzinga-readers-pick-this-crypto-to-have-the-biggest-gain-before-end-of-2025">set back in 2021.</a>
While Ethereum&#8217;s gains in 2024 are less than those of other cryptocurrencies, the second-largest crypto still trades significantly higher than when it launched in 2015.
What Happened: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed the digital currency via a 2014 white paper, with the goal of adding scripting to make it easier for application development and to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/21/09/22811912/5-things-you-might-not-know-about-ethereum-creator-vitalik-buterin-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">set up binding contracts.</a>

Over the years there have been several major events and updates to Ethereum including the fork of Ethereum 2.0 and&nbsp;Ethereum Classic&nbsp;(CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/etc/usd">ETC</a>).
Ethereum saw increased attention and a surge in valuation related to the boom of non-fungible tokens in 2021. Many of the NFTs were built on the Ethereum blockchain, including&nbsp;CryptoPunks&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bored Ape Yacht Club. A record sale of a&nbsp;Beeple&nbsp;NFT&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/21/03/20134939/beeple-nft-sold-for-a-record-69-million" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">created interest in NFTs&nbsp;</a>and Ethereum.
Today, Ethereum is the second most valuable cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $403.1 billion.

Investing $1,000 in Ethereum:&nbsp;An investment in the second largest cryptocurrency the year it launched would have generated a strong return for investors.
While it was harder to invest in Ethereum prior to its inclusion on major cryptocurrency exchanges, investors were able to purchase the crypto after it launched.

Ethereum has traded between $1,988.12 and $4,092.28 over the last 52 weeks. There is no guarantee that the cryptocurrency will return to yearly or all-time highs.

Quarterly revenue came in at $3.82 billion, which beat the consensus estimate of $3.81 billion and is an increase over sales of $3.76 billion from the same period last year.

Gap Stock Soars On Better-Than-Expected Q3 Results, Raised FY Guidance: Details

American States Water Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AWR#NYSE">AWR</a>) announced that on November 15, 2024, its regulated water utility subsidiary, Golden State Water Company ("GSWC"), received a proposed decision from the assigned administrative law judge at the California Public Utilities Commission ("CPUC") in connection with the pending general rate case proceeding that will determine new water rates for the years 2025 – 2027. A final decision by the CPUC is expected as soon as the end of the fourth quarter of 2024. When a final decision is issued by the CPUC, the new rates for 2025 will be effective January 1, 2025.
On July 12, 2024, GSWC and the Public Advocates Office ("Cal Advocates") at the CPUC filed a joint motion to adopt a settlement agreement between GSWC and Cal Advocates in the general rate case proceeding. The proposed decision approves and adopts the settlement agreement in its entirety. Among other things, the settlement agreement authorizes GSWC to invest approximately $573.1 million in capital infrastructure over the three-year cycle in order to continue to provide safe and reliable water utility service to its customers, which includes $17.7 million of advice letter capital investments to be filed for revenue recovery during the second and third year attrition increases when those projects are completed. In addition, the settlement agreement approves $58.2 million of advice letter capital investments already under construction beginning in 2023 also to be filed for revenue recovery during the second and third year attrition increases when those projects are completed. The settlement agreement also allows for additional increases in adopted revenues for 2026 and 2027 subject to an earnings test and changes to the forecasted inflationary index values. Actual increases for 2026 and 2027 will be determined at the time the filings to implement the new rate increases are approved by the CPUC, and will be calculated using inflationary index values at that time.
Furthermore, the proposed decision addressed the two remaining unresolved 2025 revenue requirement issues related to GSWC's sales forecast and supply mix. The proposed decision adopts GSWC's recommended sales forecast and adopts a supply mix that splits the difference between GSWC's and Cal Advocates' forecasts. The proposed decision also addressed the unresolved issues related to GSWC's requests for certain regulatory mechanisms. With regards to these requests, the proposed decision (i) rejects GSWC's request for continuation of a full sales and revenue decoupling mechanism and a full cost balancing account for water supply, and instead orders GSWC to transition to a modified rate adjustment mechanism (a Monterey-style WRAM or "M-WRAM") and an incremental cost balancing account for supply costs, (ii) rejects GSWC's sales reconciliation and supply mix adjustment mechanisms, and (iii) rejects GSWC's request to modify the existing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ("PFAS") memorandum account to track carrying costs on capital investments needed to comply with the new PFAS maximum contaminant levels established by the Environmental Protection Agency, and instead orders GSWC to file for recovery of PFAS-related capital projects through a separate application or future general rate case. The proposed decision adopts GSWC's M-WRAM rate design proposal, authorizing GSWC to increase the revenue requirement in its service charges to between 45-48% depending on the ratemaking area representing approximately 65% of GSWC's fixed costs in aggregate. GSWC will file comments on the proposed decision by December 5, 2024. The proposed decision is scheduled to be voted on by the CPUC on December 19, 2024.
