"Millions of retired teachers, firefighters, letter carriers and state and local workers have waited decades for this moment," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor. "No longer will public retirees see their hard-earned Social Security benefits robbed, thanks to this bill."
Repealing the WEP and GPO will restore full <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/10/41210847/do-former-u-s-presidents-really-collect-social-security-the-surprising-truth-about-their-retirem">Social Security benefits</a> to nearly three million retirees nationwide. Advocates argue that these workers deserve the benefits they've contributed to throughout their careers.&nbsp;
"Everyone knows a teacher, firefighter, law enforcement officer, nurse or public worker who's paid into Social Security year after year, only to have their payments curbed by the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset when they retire," said Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers.&nbsp;

Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a leading advocate for the bill, said Social Security is a bedrock of the American middle class that public workers pay into like anyone else and that the WEP and GPO restrictions make no sense. "These workers serve the public," he said, addressing the Senate. "They protect our communities. They teach our kids."
National organizations representing public workers have also praised the decision. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger's website shares celebratory messages from those in the National Fraternal Order of Police, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Education Association and others.&nbsp;
Rebecca Pringle, president of the National Education Association, celebrated the bipartisan effort, saying, "Public service workers have been waiting 40 years for this wrong to be righted and we are grateful that members of Congress, in both the House and now the Senate, put aside partisan politics to come together and pass the Social Security Fairness Act."

While the legislation is celebrated for its fairness, not everyone agrees it is the right path forward. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), repealing the WEP and GPO will add an estimated $195 billion to the federal deficit over the next decade. The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/09/40817544/report-warns-of-16-500-annual-social-security-benefit-cut-for-dual-income-couples-by-2033">Social Security Trust Funds</a>, already projected to be unable to pay full benefits starting in 2035, will see their insolvency date increased by about six months.
Critics of the bill, including Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, expressed concerns about its long-term impact. "We caved to the pressure of the moment instead of doing this on a sustainable basis," he said. Others, like Sen. Rand Paul, proposed alternative solutions such as gradually raising the Social Security retirement age, though such amendments gained little support.
The bill now awaits President Biden's signature. Once enacted, it will provide immediate relief to retirees who have seen reduced benefits for years. Payments of Up to $1,400 Coming for 1 Million Eligible Taxpayers, IRS Confirms

Taiwan&#8217;s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has reportedly blocked Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) $950 million acquisition of Delivery Hero&#8217;s Foodpanda <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/05/38809280/uber-spices-up-taiwans-food-delivery-scene-with-950m-foodpanda-deal-whats-on-the-menu">business due to anti-competitive concerns.</a>
The merger, which was initially announced in May 2023, would have significantly increased Uber Eats&#8217; dominance in Taiwan&#8217;s food delivery market, giving the combined company over 90% of the market share, Reuters reports.
The FTC cited concerns that the merger would eliminate Foodpanda as Uber Eats&#8217; main competitor, reducing market pressure on the combined entity.
The commission argued that without this competition, Uber would have less incentive to keep prices low for consumers or commissions reasonable for restaurant partners.
With a huge market share, the merger could have led to higher prices and less choice for consumers, undermining the competitive landscape of Taiwan&#8217;s food delivery sector.
The deal was scrutinized by the FTC after Uber filed the application in November 2023. The commission stated that the merger&#8217;s negative effects would outweigh any economic benefits.

Automotive parts specialist Carbon Revolution (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/crev-stock-quote/">CREV</a>) &ndash; which focuses on manufacturing carbon fiber (<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cf-stock-quote/">CF</a>) wheels for vehicle manufacturers &ndash; saw its shares pop dramatically higher on Friday. Last night, the company revealed that it will supply the CF wheels available on the upcoming (and just revealed) Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Chevrolet is a General Motors (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gm-stock-quote/">GM</a>) brand and the credibility boost lifted CREV stock.



Carbon&rsquo;s CF wheels &ndash; designed as a one-piece framework &ndash; carries the advantage of being significantly lighter than the aluminum-wheel option. Per the accompanying <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/carbon-revolution-supplies-carbon-fiber-011000695.html">press release</a>, the CF wheels will reduce the Corvette ZR1&rsquo;s rotating, unsprung mass by 42.8 pounds across the vehicle. While the underlying aesthetic appeal will likely be important, it may be the performance improvement that inspires prospective buyers.



After all, the Corvette isn&rsquo;t cheap. According to Kelley Blue Book, the base model Corvette carries an <a href="https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/corvette/">MSRP of just under $70,000</a>. The current top-end model &ndash; the Z06 &ndash; commands an MSRP of $111,795. However, Car and Driver estimates that the upcoming ZR1 <a href="https://www.autonationdrive.com/blog/2019/october/15/essential-auto-101-what-is-a-halo-car.htm">halo car</a> (essentially the flagship that gets consumers excited about the underlying brand) will carry a price tag <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/corvette-zr1">between $180,000 to $205,000</a>.



In other words, a consumer plunking that amount of cash for a vehicle will likely want the absolute best in performance: that&rsquo;s probably why CREV stock skyrocketed today.



<h2>CREV Stock Linked to a Groundbreaking Performance Vehicle</h2>



Per the press release, Carbon CEO Jake Dingle noted that the new ZR1 will be the third Corvette that features the company&rsquo;s CF wheels. &ldquo;Our team harnessed its extensive engineering and manufacturing experience to come up with a wheel befitting of the highest-performance Corvette we&rsquo;ve ever seen,&rdquo; the head executive remarked.



Dingle isn&rsquo;t kidding. According to MotorTrend, the Z06 rockets to 60 miles per hour (mph) from standstill in <a href="https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2023-chevrolet-corvette-z06-convertible-0-60-quarter-mile-time/">just 2.6 seconds</a>. It eclipses the quarter mile in a blistering 10.6 seconds with a trap speed of 131.6 mph. That&rsquo;s supercar performance coming out of an engine that generates 670 horsepower.



On the other hand, Chevrolet has yet to release its figures for 0-60 times for the ZR1. But what has enthusiasts excited about the upcoming automotive juggernaut is that it generates 1,064 horsepower. To truly get the most out of this vehicle, prospective buyers will likely opt for the CF wheels. This dynamic has speculators bidding up CREV stock.



To be fair, the company is a risky proposition. Shortly following its initial public offering, CREV stock screamed higher to an <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/CREV/history/">intraday-record high of $197.99</a>. Still, the equity quickly fell back toward a more terrestrial range.



Nevertheless, with the announcement of the partnership with GM&rsquo;s high-performance halo car, investors may have Carbon Revolution on their watch list.
