What Happened: Towards the end of the two-hour-long meeting, an audience member asked Munger, "In spite of being partners for so long, why is Warren so much richer than you?" This is a stark contrast to the situation just six days ago when 41 vessels were slated&nbsp;to depart China for the&nbsp;San Pedro Bay Complex, which&nbsp;comprises&nbsp;the Port of Los Angeles&nbsp;and Port of Long Beach.



The ongoing trade war initiated by President Donald Trump has led to the implementation of heavy tariffs on a majority of Chinese imports last month. 



This has resulted in a significant decrease in the number of ships carrying cargo to American ports. The sudden dip in vessels departing from China has sparked concerns among port officials, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/05/10/business/zero-ships-china-trade-ports-pandemic">reports</a> CNN.



Mario Cordero,&nbsp;the CEO of the Port&nbsp;of Long Beach, expressed his concerns stating, &#8220;That&#8217;s cause for alarm.&#8221; The country&#8217;s busiest ports are experiencing a steep drop in cargo, with&nbsp;the Port of Long Beach&nbsp;witnessing a 35-40% fall compared to the usual cargo volume.

Benzinga Bulls And Bears: IBM, Novavax, Arm Holdings — And UK Trade Deal Boosts Markets

Global markets digested a week packed with trade breakthroughs, monetary policy signals, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/digital-assets">and digital asset milestones</a>.



Wall Street remains cautiously optimistic as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to strike favorable trade deals. Hopes were buoyed by a high-level summit between U.S. and Chinese officials in Switzerland over the upcoming weekend. Investors view the meeting as a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45294428/wall-street-rallies-after-us-seals-first-trade-deal-you-better-go-out-and-buy-stock-trump-says">step toward de-escalation.</a>



Meanwhile, the Trump administration unveiled a trade agreement with the U.K. A 10% baseline tariff remains, but the U.S. intends to cut duties on U.K. car imports <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/05/45293839/trump-starmer-strike-us-uk-trade-deal-steel-cars-beef">from 25% to 15%.</a> 



In return, the U.K. reduced tariffs on U.S. vehicles and slashed agricultural duties, bringing levies on American beef and other key exports near zero. In addition, British Airways placed a $13 billion order for Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) aircraft.



On the macro front, the Federal Reserve held its policy rate steady at 4.25%-4.50% for a third consecutive meeting, underscoring concerns over lingering inflationary pressures and labor market damage <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45263291/fed-keeps-rates-steady-warns-of-rising-uncertainty-about-the-economic-outlook">amid trade-related risks.</a>



Fed Chair Jerome Powell struck a cautious tone and resisted expectations of imminent rate cuts, reiterating that monetary policy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45266366/powell-flags-sharp-tariff-shock-elevated-uncertainty-fed-sticks-to-wait-and-see-mode">will remain data-dependent.</a> Powell dismissed recession fears, attributing the weakness in first-quarter economic data to distortions in trade flows.

Both figures beat Street estimates, continuing a streak of both figures beating estimates for more than 10 straight quarters. Among the highlights in the quarter was cross-border volume that was up 15% year-over-year. The company announced a partnership with Corpay in the quarter that will further help with cross-border payment solutions. JPMorgan analyst Tien-tsin Huang<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/price-target/25/05/45175986/mastercards-cross-border-surge-and-pricing-actions-drive-analyst-optimism"> reiterated an Overweight rating </a>on the stock after earnings. The analyst said the company showed stability despite headwinds.

Comparable store sales were up 5.2% year-over-year in U.S. locations during the month, while overall same store sales increased 4.4% year-over-year. Analysts expect the company to post third-quarter revenue of $63.0 billion, up from $58.5 billion. The company has missed revenue estimates in six of the last 10 quarters. Increased attention to the stock could indicate more optimism for the next report with macro concerns and tariffs leading to an increase in bulk shopping during recent months.

The company said it continues to work towards stronger production with an aim of a run rate of one million ounces per year in the coming years.



"Nearly all of this growth is in Canada, it's all lower cost, and it's all fully funded providing one of the strongest outlooks in our sector," Alamos Gold CEO John McCluskey said after the quarterly results when talking of future growth.

On May 8, the company announced the <a href="https://newsroom.accenture.com/news/2025/accenture-to-acquire-yumemi-to-accelerate-the-launch-of-innovative-and-influential-digital-products">acquisition </a>of Japanese digital services company Yumemi. The company said the acquisition will enhance capabilities to design and launch products for clients. Yumemi has designed digital products for more than 600 companies since its founding in 2000. Accenture is expected to report third-quarter financial results in June. The company has beaten analyst estimates for earnings per share in nine of the last 10 quarters and beaten revenue estimates in seven of the last 10 quarters.

She stated that the US is in a recession but anticipates it to end soon, following&nbsp;more clarity around President Trump's&nbsp;tariff negotiations. She is optimistic that this will trigger considerable economic growth, partly driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

"I just put out a letter talking about the rolling recession we've been in for the last three years, since the Fed jacked up rates. We got a negative quarter in the first quarter, and potentially in the second quarter as well. And I think more and more people are getting concerned about an extended recession, and amid all the uncertainty, we actually think we're at the end of this rolling recession, and that we are moving into a period, after all of this uncertainty, of much greater productivity,&#8221; Wood added. 



&#8220;I&nbsp;think we're going to see a lot more productivity driven growth, which means inflation is going to be much lower than expected, which is going to be very capital friendly," she shared. 



At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $102,811, marking a 2.4% increase&nbsp;in the last 24 hours.

A recent shift in how the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45281537/gop-warns-trump-appointed-social-security-chief-frank-bisignano-against-further-staff-cuts-citing-risks-to-services-as-baby-boomers-age">Social Security Administration</a> handles benefit overpayments may offer partial relief — but it still comes with serious consequences. Effective April 25, the SSA began withholding up to 50% of monthly Title II benefits, such as retirement, disability, or survivor payments, from those who received overpayments.&nbsp;



While that's a step back from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/03/44368080/ssa-to-seek-100-recovery-on-social-security-overpayments-heres-what-this-means-for-your-benefits">previously announced 100% clawback</a>, experts say the new policy can still leave retirees and other beneficiaries in financial distress.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Are Benefits Being Withheld?</h2>



Overpayments happen when the SSA sends out more money than a person is actually owed. This can occur for several reasons, including agency errors or delays in processing information — like changes to a beneficiary's income, living situation, or marital status.



When the SSA determines that an overpayment has occurred, it sends a notice asking for full and immediate repayment. If the beneficiary doesn't respond within roughly 90 days — by requesting a waiver, a reconsideration, or a lower repayment rate — the SSA begins automatically withholding funds.



According to an <a href="https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/lnx/04252025032443PM">emergency message</a> from the SSA, the new policy sets a default withholding rate of 50% for all new overpayment notices beginning April 25. This means half of a beneficiary's monthly check may be withheld until the debt is paid off — unless they take action.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Relief from 100%, But Still Not Easy</h2>



The SSA's decision follows backlash against a previous plan to withhold 100% of benefits for overpaid recipients. That plan, <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/news/press/releases/2025/#2025-03-07-a">announced</a> earlier this year, would have left some individuals without any income at all. Critics, including advocacy organizations and lawmakers, called the full clawback "draconian."



While the reduced rate is seen as progress, it's far from a full solution.



"If you're relying on your benefits to pay your rent or your mortgage and buy food, losing half of that income is going to be devastating and can still result in people becoming homeless," Kate Lang, director of federal income security at Justice in Aging, told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/05/social-security-overpayment-withholding-rate-change.html">CNBC</a>.



Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, told CNBC the change still risks causing "immediate economic hardship" for many, particularly when the overpayment was not the beneficiary's fault.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can You Dispute the Overpayment?</h2>



Yes — but it's not always straightforward. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/03/44292349/if-i-were-a-beneficiary-id-be-setting-aside-some-money-right-now-former-ssa-commissioner-warns-t">Beneficiaries</a> can request a reconsideration, a waiver, or a lower withholding rate. However, responses can vary depending on the SSA employee handling the case.



"There are thousands of employees that individual beneficiaries are going to be dealing with to ask for a waiver or ask to negotiate a different repayment rate," Lang said. "And those employees have a lot of discretion in what they decide."&nbsp;



Plus, long wait times for SSA appointments can make it harder for people to respond in time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to Do If You Receive an Overpayment Notice</h2>



If you get a notice, act quickly. According to the SSA, you typically have about 90 days to challenge it before the SSA begins withholding up to 50% of your monthly benefit.



Experts recommend contacting the SSA as soon as possible to explore your options. You may be able to reduce the withholding rate or avoid repayment altogether if you weren't at fault for the overpayment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bottom Line</h2>



While the SSA's decision to cut the withholding rate from 100% to 50% may sound like good news, the fallout could still be serious for many retirees. Stay informed, respond quickly to any overpayment notice, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

You Could Still Lose Half Your Benefits: Social Security Reduces Overpayment Withholding Rate, Experts Warn Of Fallout

On a recent episode of The Ramsey Show, a woman phoned in to talk about her boyfriend's approach to finance that raised some red flags: "I've been dating a lovely young man… and his response [to retirement savings] was that 401(k)s are a scam." Hosts Dave Ramsey and George Kamel, as usual, had a lot to say about that.



What Happened: The caller <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y324f44rQuk">shared</a> that while she saves sincerely with a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/what-is-a-401k">401(k)</a> and Roth IRA, her 32-year-old boyfriend, who immigrated from Albania six years ago, disregards retirement accounts completely. Ramsey responded: "What he&#8217;s saying is&#8230; I'm immature and I don't want to think about the future."



Ramsey went on to acknowledge that fear or cultural experience might be impacting the boyfriend's position. "If he is truly scared of this product… then you can deal with fear," Kamel added. They advised the caller to approach the situation like teaching someone to ride a bike: begin with training wheels, then build confidence step by step.

For this woman, the path forward with her boyfriend would be to "honor their questions," said Kamel. "Don't always try to explain them away… get with a third party" like a financial advisor. &nbsp;Ramsey then added: "I love you—don't marry this guy. He ain't worth it," if his mindset does not shift.

What Happened: Workers, who are paid hourly, were notified earlier this week that they could either use paid time off or report for cleaning and training duties, but wouldn&#8217;t work on production lines. Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Dogecoin Continue Surging As Altcoin Market Buzzes

The cryptocurrency market rallied sharply on Thursday after the Trump administration inked a trade deal with the United Kingdom.

What Happened: Bitcoin breached the $100,000 milestone after a wait of three months, catalyzing a broader market uptick. The apex cryptocurrency nearly tapped $104,000 in a volatile session, with trading volume increasing by 59% in the last 24 hours.



Bitcoin&#8217;s gains were overwhelmed by its younger sibling, Ethereum, which burst out after weeks of sideways trading around the $1,800 range. The second-largest cryptocurrency breached $2,200, a level not seen in over two months.



The rally pushed Ethereum's market dominance past 8% for the first time in over a month.



Bearish leveraged traders took in huge losses as the rally wiped out nearly $800 million in short positions.



Interestingly, Bitcoin's Open Interest dropped 0.20% in the last 24 hours, indicating that the rally may have been driven by short covering. On the other hand, Ethereum's Open Interest surged 20%.



The "Greed" sentiment prevailed in the market, according to the Crypto Fear and Greed Index.

The global cryptocurrency market capitalization soared 6.91% in the last 24 hours to $3.22 trillion.



Stocks also climbed on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 254.48 points, or 0.62%, to end at 41,368.45. The S&amp;P 500 lifted 0.58% to close at 5,663.94, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 1.07% to finish at 17,928.14.



The risk-on sentiment was bolstered after the Trump administration signed its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45294428/wall-street-rallies-after-us-seals-first-trade-deal-you-better-go-out-and-buy-stock-trump-says">first major trade agreement with the</a> UK, fueling confidence about further global deals.



This comes ahead of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45242461/donald-trumps-trade-war-sparks-first-major-us-china-talks-scott-bessent-jamieson-greer-to-meet-chinese-delegation-in-geneva">meeting with top Chinese officials for trade negotiations</a>.

Analyst Notes: Cryptocurrency analytics firm Santiment said the ongoing bullish sentiment could be a "double-edged sword" for upcoming price moves.



"On one hand, retail FOMO can add a bit of extra fuel to this rally as major media outlets spam Bitcoin&#8217;s 3-month milestone and bring in many new entries to the space. On the other hand, we typically see rallies put on the brakes when there is an overwhelming amount of calls related to &#8216;higher&#8217; or &#8216;above,&#8217;" the firm added.

Cryptocurrency analyst and trader Rekt Capital weighed in on Ethereum's stratospheric gains during the day, emphasizing the significance of $2,200.
