Shares of machinery companies are trading lower as stocks pull back after surging Wednesday following President Trump's tariff pause announcement.

The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NASDAQ">XLI</a>) declined 2.4% to $123.71 Thursday morning, giving back part of its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44720006/markets-take-off-as-trump-announces-90-day-tariff-pause-for-non-retaliating-nations-slaps-china-with-125-duty">dramatic gains</a> from the prior session, as investors moved to lock in profits despite a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">surprisingly soft inflation report</a> that reinforced Wednesday's bullish macro shift.
What To Know: After surging more than 9% on news of President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on tariffs for non-retaliatory nations, XLI was down nearly 2% by mid-morning, reflecting broader market weakness and cautious repositioning.
The retreat comes even as fresh data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed inflation <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/04/44733390/march-inflation-rate-cools-far-more-than-expected-raises-hopes-for-near-term-fed-rate-cuts">cooling more sharply</a> than expected in March. Headline CPI fell to 2.4% year-over-year, the lowest since September, while core inflation eased to 2.8%, a level not seen in four years. Monthly inflation contracted by 0.1% — the weakest print since May 2020 — helped by a 6.3% drop in gasoline prices.

The inflation data added to optimism that the front-loaded impact of tariffs may be less damaging than feared. However, that wasn't enough to extend Wednesday's euphoric rally, which saw the S&amp;P 500 post its largest one-day percentage gain since 2008.
What Else: XLI, which tracks U.S. industrial giants like Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>), General Electric Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GE#NYSE">GE</a>), Union Pacific Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNP#NYSE">UNP</a>), Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HON#NASDAQ">HON</a>) and 3M Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MMM#NYSE">MMM</a>), is particularly sensitive to trade policy, global demand expectations and inflation. 
While the tariff pause and disinflationary surprise support a more favorable backdrop for cyclical sectors, Thursday's pullback likely reflects near-term profit taking after outsized gains and lingering uncertainty around the durability of the policy shift.
Markets are now recalibrating expectations ahead of the Federal Reserve's May meeting, with rate cut odds rising sharply post-CPI.

General Electric And Caterpillar Lead XLI Pullback: What's Going On?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has called for a disclosure by Congress members after observing that the Nasdaq call volume spiked minutes before President Donald Trump&#8216;s announcement on a tariff pause.
What Happened: Trump announced a pause in the tariffs in a Truth Social post around 1:18 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
However, the data shared by Spencer Hakimian, the founder of Tolou Capital Management and Unusual Whales, a popular social media commentator and online suite for data feeds and tools on options flows, showed that call volumes for various contracts started spiking around 1:00 p.m. ET.
AOC, in an X post, said that &#8220;Any member of Congress who purchased stocks in the last 48 hours should probably disclose that now.&#8221;
While the disclosure deadline is May 15, AOC added that &#8220;We're about to learn a few things. It's time to ban insider trading in Congress.&#8221;

On the other hand, Unusual Whales highlighted that SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) 509 calls expiring on Wednesday, April 9, surged 2100% in one hour.
Meanwhile, Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) 406 calls expiring on April 17, also surged. &#8220;Insane, someone knew,&#8221; said Unusual Whales in its X post.

Why It Matters: Days before the pause, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Tuesday, April 8, disclosed the purchase of several stocks that faced steep drawdowns last week. This included tech giants Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>).
The purchases were made on April 3 and April 4, according to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/gov-trades/members/marjorie-taylor-greene">Benzinga Government Trades tracker</a>, and all trades reported in the filing have a reported value ranging from $1,000 to $15,000. 
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>), Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>), Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>), and FedEx Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDX#NYSE">FDX</a>) are some of the other <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/long-ideas/25/04/44697177/marjorie-taylor-greene-buys-the-dip-congresswoman-purchases-shares-of-apple-amazon-nike-and-more-following-tariff-related-sell-off">17 total stocks she purchased</a>. 
Price Action: SPY rose by 10.50% on Wednesday, whereas QQQ advanced 12.00%.
Nasdaq 100 rose to exit the bear territory and was down 13.85% from its previous record of 22,222.61 points. The S&amp;P 500 was still in the correction zone, down 11.23% from its last high of 6,147.43 points. Whereas Dow Jones was 9.91% lower than its 52-week high of 45,073.63 points.
On Thursday, the futures of Dow were down by 0.22%, and the futures of S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 index were 0.56% and 1.03% lower, respectively.

SPY, QQQ Call Volumes Spiked Minutes Before Tariff Pause Announcement: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Demands Disclosure From Congress Members

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/04/44590350/courtroom-clash-no-thank-you-sparks-lawsuit-as-altman-shuts-down-musks-97-4b-bid">Elon Musk </a>is once again making headlines, this time with his AI startup xAI and its massive computing ambitions in Memphis, Tennessee. With plans to install one million Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) graphics processing units, Musk wants to turn the city into a global AI powerhouse.&nbsp;
But there&#8217;s just one small problem—power, lots of it. And Memphis&#8217;s grid might not be ready for the jolt.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Supercomputer Dream Faces a Power Reality Check</h2>
Since June 2024, xAI has filed 14 construction permit applications totaling an estimated $405.9 million. These permits cover everything from a $30 million computer equipment installation to a $3.9 million crash-resistant perimeter fence, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-xai-data-center-colossus-power-memphis-2025-4">Business Insider</a>. But powering this supercomputer isn&#8217;t as simple as flipping a switch.

Musk&#8217;s company has requested 300 megawatts from Memphis Light, Gas and Water, or MLGW.&nbsp; Still, it has only secured approval for 150 megawatts so far, according to a Nov. 7<a href="https://tva-azr-eastus-cdn-ep-tvawcm-prd.azureedge.net/cdn-tvawcma/docs/default-source/about-tva/board-of-directors/november--7-2024/2024-11072024-board-meeting-minutes-signed.pdf?sfvrsn=fde0917c_1"> meeting report</a> by the Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors. That&#8217;s not nearly enough to keep 1 million graphics processing units humming.&nbsp;
To make up for this, xAI has applied to build an electrical substation, which uses gas-powered generators from Caterpillar (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAT#NYSE">CAT</a>) subsidiary Solar Turbines, which can produce a combined 250 megawatts. Still, this falls short of the massive energy needs ahead.
In a<a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/shaolei_ren_ai_consumes_a_lot_of_water_but_why"> TED Talk</a>, electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of California Riverside Shaolei Ren, said, &#8220;Every time you ask an AI chatbot a question, you also consume water—without realizing it. AI doesn&#8217;t just require computing power; it needs cooling, and that cooling comes with a cost.&#8221;

<a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.03271">According to the study</a>, "Making AI Less ‘Thirsty': Uncovering and Addressing the Secret Water Footprint of AI Models," which Ren was the corresponding author of, training the GPT-3 language model in Microsoft&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) state-of-the-art U.S. data centers can directly evaporate 700,000 liters of clean freshwater.
Despite the challenges, Memphis officials are eager to see the project succeed. They&#8217;ve called xAI&#8217;s investment a game-changer that could establish the city as a global AI hub. In an Oct. 5, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQkYdv1w04o">WMC-TV</a> board meeting, Edge CEO Joann Massey said, &#8220;This is a phenomenal event that just happened in Memphis. This is the catalyst for growth, for moving our city forward, and a big investment. We all expect to see great things happening.&#8221; However, the power concerns are very real.
On Jan. 8, MLGW CEO Doug McGowen acknowledged the potential roadblocks during a <a href="https://memphistn.gov/watch-city-council-meetings/">public meeting</a> of the Memphis City Council, stating, "People can announce many things, and I think that&#8217;s important for our community—that we get excited about upcoming <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/02/43575286/retiree-earning-60k-dividends-on-500-000-investment-shares-top-3-stock-picks-not-rich-but-not-compla">opportunities</a>.
