Tesla Rival Li Auto Will Release 2 New SUVs This Year, CEO Li Xiang Hints At Company's First Sedan

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) supplier Foxconn is set to announce a partnership with a second Japanese auto manufacturer as the Taiwanese manufacturer turns towards EVs.
What Happened: The company's chairman, Young Liu, shared the announcement at the company's annual investor meeting, Reuters reported on Thursday.
"There are two Japanese automakers; one has already been announced, and the other is almost ready to be," Liu said at the meeting. Foxconn recently signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi Motors to develop an EV.
The company views partnerships with Japanese companies as integral to offset the threat posed by Chinese EV brands expanding into various regions in Europe, the report suggests.

Apple Supplier Foxconn Eyes Second Japanese EV Deal To Counter China's Auto Surge

One of the major dealers of Chinese EV giant BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) has reportedly shut down its operations across multiple cities in China as the company expands into the European market.
What Happened: Over 20 stores of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rival in China's eastern Shandong province, owned by a company called Qiancheng Holdings, were shut, according to a Reuters report citing Chinese state-owned media on Thursday.
The company shutting down the stores in over 4 major cities has affected over 1,000 customers with warranty and after-sales service-related woes, the report suggests.
Qiancheng cited changes to BYD's dealer policies, which increased the pressure on the company's cash flow. However, a representative from BYD cited in the Reuters report suggests that Qiancheng's rapid expansion led to the crisis instead.

Tesla's European Woes See No End, April Sales Crash 49% As Rivals Race Ahead In EV Market

Regulators from China's commerce ministry are set to meet with executives from several Chinese automakers, including EV giant BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>), to discuss the surge in zero-mile used car sales.
What Happened: The meeting is set to take place on Tuesday afternoon, according to an anonymous source cited in a report by Reuters published on Tuesday.
A zero-mile used car is a car that has been registered with the authorities and has number plates, which make it a ‘sold' car. However, the car has never been driven. The report suggests over 4000 vendors sell these cars domestically in China.
The meeting also includes China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), as well as executives from Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DNFGY#OTC">DNFGY</a>), the report suggests.
Why It Matters: The news comes in as used EVs are steadily picking up the pace. Recently, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) announced it will begin <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45487522/tesla-is-accepting-trade-ins-for-2024-cybertruck-amid-plummeting-sales-figures-report">accepting trade-ins </a>for the Cybertruck, a year after the company released the product into the market.
Elsewhere, BYD has been ramping up its European goals, as the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45560953/byds-europe-pivot-in-full-swing-with-new-26000-affordable-ev-amid-tesla-sales-slump">company recently unveiled </a>its Dolphin Surf hatchback EV in the region. The Dolphin Surf is the Euro-spec version of BYD's best-selling Seagull EV.
BYD also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45564693/byd-outsells-elon-musks-tesla-amid-european-plans-shift-into-gear">surpassed Tesla sales</a> for the first time recently as BYD registered 7,231 battery-electric vehicles in Europe in April, which was higher than Tesla&#8217;s 7,165 units during the same period, according to expert data.

Chinese Regulators Will Meet Tesla Rival BYD, Other Companies To Discuss 'Zero Mile' Used Cars: Report

Chinese carmaker BYD Company ADR (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) might have stolen the April electric vehicle title in Europe, but markets didn&#8217;t bat an eyelid. Neither did Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45564693/byd-outsells-elon-musks-tesla-amid-european-plans-shift-into-gear">BYD sold 7,231 battery electric cars (BEVs) in Europe in April</a>, edging out Tesla, which sold 7,165, new figures from JATO Dynamics show. Although the milestone represents a symbolic turning point in the European EV battle, it didn&#8217;t dent investor faith, as Tesla shares gained more than 2% on the day of the news.
It's the first time a Chinese brand has outsold Tesla in Europe's BEV segment, a region where the U.S. automaker has long held the pole position. BYD's ascent has been swift: the company began serious expansion into Europe only in late 2022. 
But markets appear to be betting that it&#8217;s only short-term turbulence for Tesla.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">ETF Exposure: Why Tesla Still Matters</h1>
Tesla&#8217;s short fall in European rankings will be a speed bump, but for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">ETFs tracking the EV and clean energy theme</a>, the larger picture still seems intact. 
Tesla is still a top holding in many of the large ETFs, like the ARK Innovation ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARKK#BATS">ARKK</a>), Global X Autonomous &amp; Electric Vehicles ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DRIV#NASDAQ">DRIV</a>), and iShares Self-Driving EV and Tech ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IDRV#NYSE">IDRV</a>), and today&#8217;s market response indicates that few are heading for the exits.
ARKK continues to hold a significant stake in Tesla (12.95%), relying on its push into autonomous mobility, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The upcoming robotaxi pilot and production of the Cybercab next year are part of ARKK's high-conviction, future-focused strategy. For investors betting on transformative tech, Tesla is still a solid play. The fund was up 1.42% at publication on Thursday.
ETFs like DRIV and IDRV has a wider exposure across the EV supply chain, including traditional automakers, chipmakers and software providers. Tesla is still one of the top holdings in both, but these funds also include companies like NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TM#NYSE">TM</a>), and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), which help cushion any Tesla-specific volatility. 
This diversified approach makes it attractive to investors looking to benefit from the EV trend without putting all their chips on one automaker. Interestingly, though, IDRIV has rejigged its portfolio to dedicate the largest percentage distribution to BYD. Both the funds were fairly non-reactive to the news today.

Tesla&#8217;s recent delivery downturn, continuing production interruptions and waiting for updated models such as the new Model Y have caused short-term headwinds. 
The stock is down more than 9% so far this year on an aggregate. Nevertheless, the company&#8217;s long-term strategy, backed by robotaxis, AI-based innovations, energy storage and next-generation vehicle platforms, is still compelling. Tesla&#8217;s pilot robotaxi launch will start as early as June in Austin, while a larger commercial fleet (Cybercab) is scheduled for 2026. 
For ETFs such as ARKK, which are constructed on narratives of innovation, Tesla still fits the thesis.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">BYD&#8217;s Rise = A Diversification Opportunity</h1>
BYD&#8217;s increasing foothold in Europe, despite the tariffs on Chinese manufacturers imposed by the European Union, underscores the need for geographic diversification across EV ETFs. Funds like KraneShares Electric Vehicles and Future Mobility ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KARS#NYSE">KARS</a>), which encompass both Western and Chinese carmakers, are uniquely positioned to capitalize on the worldwide nature of EV growth. BYD is also growing rapidly, doubling international sales in April on a year-over-year basis, and establishing manufacturing platforms in Hungary and Turkey to circumvent EU import tariffs.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">ESG Considerations And Musk&#8217;s Shadow</h1>
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, remains a magnet for attention, some of it unwanted. Protests and controversy surrounding his politics have generated backlash in the U.S. and Europe, creating an overhang for ESG-oriented funds. Nevertheless, for most ETFs, the firm&#8217;s role in electrification and renewable energy exceeds the reputation risk, at least in the short term.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Room To Grow</h1>
Tesla&#8217;s affordability, volume expansion, and capital-free manufacturing focus is unbroken. The firm is targeting lower-cost models and expanding production with minimal incremental capital, aiming for a 60% uplift ratio over 2024 levels. Its energy segment is also picking up, with record Powerwall installations and expanding margins.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h1>
BYD&#8217;s passing of Tesla in Europe&#8217;s EV rankings is news-worthy, but not necessarily the turning point. ETF investors and the broader market seem to be seeing through the noise and concentrating on fundamentals. Tesla might be facing choppy waters today, but it remains an ETF pick and is at the center of the future of mobility and innovation.
As the EV industry continues to grow, ETFs that accept Tesla&#8217;s long-term vision along with the emergence of legitimate challengers such as BYD might be the most balanced way to go.

BYD Outsells Tesla In Europe, But These ETFs Still Back Elon's EV Empire

China's BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) has surpassed Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) for the first time in European sales.
What Happened: BYD registered 7,231 battery-electric vehicles in Europe in April, which was higher than Tesla's 7,165 units during the same period, market research firm JATO Dynamics reported on Thursday.
Although the difference between the two brands' monthly sales totals may be small, the implications are enormous. This is a watershed moment for Europe's car market, particularly when you consider that Tesla has led the European BEV market for years," JATO analyst Felipe Munoz said.
The report also suggests that BEV demand in the region has experienced a 28% YoY increase in April 2025, when compared with last year. Chinese brands have been driving the growth in the region, the report said.
While BYD experienced a surge, Tesla reported a 49% YoY drop in volumes in Europe, the report suggests. The drop in volumes signals a tough time for Elon Musk's EV giant.&nbsp;
Why It Matters: The report comes in as BYD has launched the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45560953/byds-europe-pivot-in-full-swing-with-new-26000-affordable-ev-amid-tesla-sal"> Dolphin Surf EV</a> in Europe, which is based on the company's best-selling EV in China, called the Seagull. The dolphin surf is available for a price of $26,000.
BYD's European push stems from the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44946809/byd-rejigs-european-strategy-amid-lack-of-market-knowledge-and-modest-dealer-network-report">company's strategy pivot</a> as the EV giant failed to meet growth targets due to a poor understanding of the region, as well as a lax dealership network, among other reasons.
However, the company has since developed its strategy and its new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45097773/satellite-images-put-tesla-rival-byds-hungarian-factory-capable-of-producing-200k-units-annually-in-the-spotlight">Hungarian manufacturing facility</a>, capable of producing over 200,000 EVs annually, indicates BYD's aggressive push in Europe.
Elsewhere, Tesla has experienced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45220631/tesla-new-car-sales-hit-2-year-low-in-uk-germany-as-european-woes-continue">decline in sales</a> in several European markets, largely driven by Musk's involvement in the Trump administration and Tesla's aging line-up of vehicles.

BYD Dethrones Tesla In European EV Sales For The First Time, Signaling A Growing Threat To Elon Musk's EV Empire

Chinese EV giant BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) has launched its best-selling all-electric hatchback Seagull's updated version in Europe.
What Happened: The EV hatchback, dubbed Dolphin Surf for the European Market, comes with a sticker price of 23,000 Euros or over $26,000, the company revealed on Wednesday. The EV will be available in three different trim levels, with the standard version offering a range of 137 miles while the long-range version boasts a range of 315 miles on a single charge.
BYD is offering a discount on the standard version of the Dolphin Surf until June, retailing for 19,990 or just under $23,000. The EV comes standard with BYD's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. There is also a four-seater version in the pipeline.
The BYD Seagull is the company's best-selling model in China, appearing in the upper echelons of the domestic sales charts, trailing only behind rival Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) Model Y. 
Why It Matters: The news comes in as BYD continues to expand its presence in the region. Recently, reports in the media showcased the company's manufacturing facility <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45097773/satellite-images-put-tesla-rival-byds-hungarian-factory-capable-of-producing-200k-units-annually-in-the-spotlight">taking shape in Hungary</a>. The facility can produce up to 200,000 EVs annually.
The company also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44946809/byd-rejigs-european-strategy-amid-lack-of-market-knowledge-and-modest-dealer-network-report">revamped its European strategy</a> as it grappled with slower-than-expected growth in the region. BYD hired executives well-versed in the European market, as well as expanding dealer networks.
Interestingly, BYD's shift in Europe comes as rival Elon Musk's Tesla is experiencing a slump in the region with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45220631/tesla-new-car-sales-hit-2-year-low-in-uk-germany-as-european-woes-continue">declining sales </a>in several European markets like Germany, Spain and the UK. Musk's EV giant's market share is now at 2% in Europe, declining from 2.9% last year.&nbsp;

Amazon's Zoox To Launch Self-Driving Car Tests In Atlanta This Summer

Despite a rocky year-to-date drop of over 16%, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rallied 40% from its April lows and catapulted back to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/43962728/tesla-loses-1-trillion-valuation-as-shares-plunge-8-elon-musks-doge-role-brand-backlash-fuel-sell-off">the $1 trillion club</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">TSLA: Chart Whisperers Go Bullish</h2>
Tesla stock has closed above the closely watched 200-day simple moving average (currently at $294.06) and is trading comfortably above its five, 20 and 50-day exponential moving averages — a classic hallmark of a strong bullish trend.
The eight-day and 20-day simple moving averages are both giving firm buy signals, with prices well above those levels. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator prints a healthy 11.17 and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at 64.77 — suggesting momentum without overheating.
To top it off, Tesla just confirmed a triple bottom formation, a technical pattern, repeatedly bouncing off the support at around $225. This technical chart pattern often precedes sustained bullish reversals. Charts indicate a clear bullish uptrend from here, with key support zones at $289 and $225.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Robotaxi Dreams Vs. China Blues</h2>
While Wall Street is fixated on Musk's promised robotaxi debut in Austin next month — albeit with "maybe 10–20 vehicles" — China remains Tesla's Achilles' heel. The company slid to <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/05/12/automakers-share-china-nev-market-apr-2025/">eighth</a> place in China's new energy vehicle market in April, capturing just 3.2% share, down sharply from 7.5% in March.
BYD Co Ltd (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY) continues to dominate the Chinese NEV space, posting a staggering 268,778 units sold in April. Tesla's local deliveries dropped nearly 9% year-over-year. And yet, none of this has derailed the current rally.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Back In The Trillionaire Club</h2>
Thanks to a nearly 7% pop on Monday, Tesla rejoined the $1 trillion market cap club. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) are also members.
The bigger surprise is just how fast sentiment flipped. CEO Elon Musk's decision to dial down his political involvement and refocus on Tesla may have rekindled investor faith. Although David Sacks, the White House&#8217;s &#8220;crypto czar,&#8221; recently <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/45094266/elon-musk-isnt-completely-out-of-doge-hes-just-in-maintenance-mode-says-david-sacks-if-he-doesnt-theres-gonna-be-a-huge-backsliding" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated </a>that Musk was not completely out of DOGE.
If momentum holds and robotaxi execution doesn&#8217;t stumble, Tesla may be turbocharged for the second half of the year.

Tesla Back In The Trillionaire Club: EV Stock Revs Back With 40% Rebound, Robotaxi Update

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technologies Co. Ltd., plans to raise over $4 billion through a stock listing on Hong Kong's stock exchange.
What Happened: The Chinese battery giant will aim to raise the figure by selling over 117.9 million shares priced at HK$263 ($33.75) on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Reuters reported on Monday.
The report also suggests that the deal could be raised to $5.3 billion if an offer size adjustment and a Greenshoe option are implemented, which essentially allows the underwriters to sell more shares if there is sufficient demand.
This is the biggest listing on the planet so far this year, the report said and the final price for the listing could be announced on or before May 19. The company says it will use the money raised to develop its Hungary manufacturing facility.
Why It Matters: News of the listing comes in as CATL <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/25/02/43613949/tesla-supplier-catl-eyes-5-billion-hong-kong-listing-amid-us-sanctions-market-revival-report">was previously eyeing a listing</a> in Hong Kong worth over $5 billion amid growing U.S.-China trade tensions.
The China-based EV battery manufacturer had also recently taken the wraps off its new battery, which offers <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/04/44894382/tesla-battery-supplier-catl-unveils-new-fast-charging-battery-with-323-mile-range-in-five-minutes">over 323 miles of range</a> on a 5-minute charge.
CATL's clients include companies like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>), as well as Volkswagen AG (OTCPK: VLKAF).

Tesla Battery Supplier CATL Eyes Over $4B In Hong Kong Listing — Could Become 2025's Biggest IPO Yet

Tesla Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>)&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tesla-china" rel="noreferrer noopener">China-made electric vehicle</a> sales in April dropped 6% year-over-year, extending declines for a seventh month.
Deliveries of China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles totaled 58,459 units in April, down 25.8% from March, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Tesla&#8217;s sales&nbsp;plunged across Europe&nbsp;in April as brand sentiment and political backlash weighed on growth. CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged the challenges of running his business while working with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Tesla&#8217;s Chinese competitors have increased their market share. Tesla stock has lost 28% in stock value year-to-date.
Tesla ramped up efforts to sell into new markets such as&nbsp;India&nbsp;and&nbsp;Saudi Arabia to gain market share akin to its Chinese EV rivals.
Tesla also remains focused on commercializing the affordable version of Model Y in Shanghai in 2026.

What Is Going On With Tesla Stock On Wednesday?

Tesla Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) European woes continue to pose a problem for Elon Musk&#8217;s EV giant as sales in the UK and Germany hit new lows.
What Happened: Sales for the company's vehicles fell by over 62% in the UK compared to last year and declined 46% YoY in Germany, according to a report published by Reuters on Tuesday.
This decline in sales follows a trend for the company in Europe, with sales plunging in some other markets within the region. Tesla's share in the European market also declined to 2%, from 2.9% last year.
Why It Matters: Musk's company sold over 512 vehicles in April, compared to 1,352 units last year in the UK. Interestingly, Tesla <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/25/05/45192200/teslas-european-woes-deepen-as-new-car-sales-for-april-plunge-in-spain-as-chinese-rivals-soar">sold over 571 units</a> in Spain, a 36% decline, according to data released by experts.
Tesla's sales in the region have taken a hit in Europe, even as EVs have seen <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44975755/tesla-sales-decline-28-in-europe-as-ev-car-market-experiences-growth-report">greater adoption from drivers</a> in the region. Sales for BEVs rose 17.1% in the region, ACEA data shows.
The company also faces stiff competition from rivals in the region, with Chinese EV giant BYD Co. Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) experiencing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/05/45202597/tesla-stock-falls-on-european-sales-decline-rising-competition-whats-going-on">triple-digit growth</a> in sales. BYD also pivoted its European strategy earlier and is all set to produce vehicles in the region with a manufacturing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45097773/satellite-images-put-tesla-rival-byds-hungarian-factory-capable-of-producing-200k-units-annually-in-the-spotlight">facility in Hungary</a>.
The decline in sales for Tesla comes as Musk's endorsement of far-right political ideals has resulted in backlash against the billionaire as well as his company's products being at the receiving end of vandalism.

Tesla New Car Sales Hit 2-Year Low In UK, Germany As European Woes Continue

Billionaire Warren Buffett has a long history of his Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>)(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) conglomerate <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/25/01/42832123/warren-buffett-beats-sp-500-in-2024-how-oracle-of-omahas-returns-compare-over-past-20-years">outperforming the S&amp;P 500,</a> which is tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>).
While many stocks are down in 2025, one of Buffett's top holdings is significantly outperforming the broader market and could help him outperform in 2025 once again.
What Happened: Buffett's investment in Apple Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), which remains his largest stock position in Berkshire Hathaway, has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/education/24/08/40652464/warren-buffett-celebrates-94th-birthday-with-1-trillion-market-cap-milestone-a-look-back-at-hig">helped produce strong returns</a> but is turning into a sore spot in 2025.
Apple stock is down 15.9% year-to-date in 2025. In fact, of the five largest stock holdings in Berkshire Hathaway, only one is positive year-to-date as shown below:

The Berkshire Hathaway portfolio includes positions in many stocks and one of the top performers year-to-date and over the last several years is Chinese automaker BYD Company ADR (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>).
The stock is up 49.1% year-to-date, up 69.3% over the last year and up 733.9% over the past five years. Along with beating Apple year-to-date, the five-year returns of the electric vehicle company also outpace Apple.
Buffett currently <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/berkshire-hathaway-portfolio/">owns </a>over 54 million shares of BYD valued at $2.7 billion. The stock represents around 1% of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio with the conglomerate owning over 4% of the automaker.
While Buffett has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/06/39481191/warren-buffets-berkshire-drops-byd-stake-despite-ev-leader-seeing-record-sales">trimmed the position</a> in BYD in recent years, he remains a key shareholder and the stock's gains are helping Berkshire Hathaway and the wealth of Buffett.
Berkshire Hathaway stock is up 19.3% year-to-date, outpacing the -3.0% performance of the SPY. Berkshire Hathaway has also outperformed the SPY on a one-year and five-year basis.
Buffett is now the sixth richest person in the world with a wealth of $166 billion, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/?sref=TBDibEcD">Bloomberg</a>. Buffett has gained $23.6 billion in wealth and is the top gainer year-to-date among the world's billionaires.
Only three of the top 10 richest people in the world have added to their wealth in 2025, with six of the top 10 each losing $20 billion or more to their wealth totals.

Why It's Important: Buffett can thank companies like BYD that have gained in the Berkshire Hathaway stock portfolio for his increased wealth in 2025.
The growth may not be done for BYD as the company continues to expand in Europe and parts of Asia and is among the world's leaders in electric vehicle sales.
In March, BYD <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/04/10/automakers-share-of-china-nev-market-mar-2025/">was </a>number one in new electric vehicles sales in China, with 29.3% market share, outpacing Geely (11.2%) and Tesla (7.5%). In the first quarter of 2025, BYD had 28.8% market share for new electric vehicle sales in China.
A<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/45097773/satellite-images-put-tesla-rival-byds-hungarian-factory-capable-of-producing-200k-units-annually-in-the-spotlight"> new production facility</a> in Hungary is expected to produce 200,000 units a year and help BYD's expansion in Europe. The company is also considering another factory in the region, according to reports.
BYD sold 37,000 units in Europe in the first quarter of 2025, up from 8,500 units in the previous year.
In Japan and Australia, BYD is launching <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/management/25/01/42901570/warren-buffett-backed-byd-launches-australias-first-ev-under-30k-how-the-move-could-strengthen-fight-against-elon-musks-tesla">more affordable models</a> that could help expand its market share.
Future growth for BYD and continued stock gains could be important to Berkshire Hathaway continuing to outperform the S&amp;P 500 and for Buffett to grow his wealth.

Warren Buffett Is Getting Richer In 2025 — And It's Not Because Of Apple: How One Chinese Holding Is Helping

As Chinese EV giant BYD Co., Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is gearing up to expand its presence in Europe, satellite images show the company's facility in Hungary taking shape.
What Happened: The images showcase the facility, spread over an area of 1.15 square miles, which can produce over 200,000 units a year, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-photos-show-byds-massive-hungary-factory-taking-shape-2025-4">reported</a> on Wednesday.
According to the report, BYD has invested over $4.5 billion in the factory's construction, and the company expects units to start rolling off the line sometime in the latter half of this year.
The company also has plans to set up a facility in Turkey in the near future, and is considering a third factory in Europe, the report suggests.
Why It Matters: The news comes in as BYD has recently <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44946809/byd-rejigs-european-strategy-amid-lack-of-market-knowledge-and-modest-dealer-network-report">rejigged its European strategy </a>by hiring executives well-versed with the European market from competitors, and trying to focus on Hybrid products.
BYD has since sold over 37,000 units in the European market in Q1 2025, compared to 8,500 units last year around the same time, that's a 335% YoY increase.
The company has also expressed plans to expand into other territories in Asia, as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/25/04/44904375/tesla-rival-byd-targets-japans-minicar-market-with-for-new-affordable-ev">BYD will reportedly enter</a> the Japanese market with an affordable EV priced at around $17,000, putting it squarely against the Japanese minicars.
Elsewhere, BYD also recently revealed its latest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44630091/teslas-ev-crown-at-risk-as-byd-closes-in-with-breakthrough-charging-tech">battery charging technology</a>, which can provide 250 miles of range on a 5-minute charge.

BYD Co., Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) is pivoting its European strategy as the Chinese EV manufacturer looks to expand into the market.
What Happened: Failing to hire executives with an understanding of the European market, as well as a small dealer network, were some of the ‘strategic missteps' BYD took as it entered into Europe, sources told Reuters on Wednesday.
BYD targeted at least 5% of the European EV Market prior to beginning production at its facility in Hungary, the report says, citing former BYD European Chief Michael Shu. However, the company fell way below expectations, selling over 57,000 vehicles in 2024 with a 2.8% market share.
BYD had announced that Plug-In Hybrids would play a crucial role in its European strategy. That decision came after advice from the company's European special adviser, Alfredo Altavilla — a key figure in the rejig who convinced the brand that EV penetration in many European markets still lags behind ICE and Hybrids, the report suggests.
"It is necessary to educate customers in the green transition.&#8221; Altavilla shared in the report. BYD has since hired various executives from rival companies like Stellantis NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLA#NYSE">STLA</a>) as well as appointed executive VP Stella Li in charge of Europe, the report says.
The company's sales in Europe have since experienced a surge, having sold over 37,000 units in the region — including the United Kingdom — in Q1 2025. The company had sold just over 8,500 units last year, around the same time.
Why It Matters: BYD has recently made headway into Japan as the company targets the local minicar market with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/25/04/44904375/tesla-rival-byd-targets-japans-minicar-market-with-for-new-affordable-ev">an affordable EV</a>. The company had also disrupted the Chinese domestic market by introducing its God's Eye driver assistance system even in affordable models.
BYD had recently unveiled<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44630091/teslas-ev-crown-at-risk-as-byd-closes-in-with-breakthrough-charging-tech"> new charging tech</a>, which was capable of providing over 250 miles of range in just over 5 minutes of charging. BYD is now the world's largest battery EV manufacturer with over 15.7% of the global market share.
Elsewhere, other Chinese manufacturers are also making their way to the European market. However, it could prove to be difficult as Nio Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) recently announced a delay to the launch of its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44915240/tesla-rival-nio-delays-the-european-launch-of-firefly-ev-report">Firefly EV in Europe</a>.&nbsp;
