Chinese EV giant&nbsp;BYD Co Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) said on Tuesday that the company sold 417,603 new energy passenger vehicles in September, marking a jump of nearly 46% from last year, thanks to a major jump in plug-in hybrid vehicles sales. 
What Happened:&nbsp;Pure EV sales of the Chinese player rose to 164,956 in September, marking a rise of 9% from the corresponding month of last year. 
Plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales in the period rose 86.2% to 252,647 units. 
The company also sold 1,823 commercial vehicles in September, including 306 buses. 
Why It Matters: BYD is the biggest rival to American EV giant Tesla Inc. The company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/01/36839203/warren-buffett-backed-byd-sees-higher-profits-for-fy23-after-taking-over-tesla-as-biggest-ev-seller" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">took over Tesla</a> as the world's largest BEV seller in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, Tesla took back the crown in the first quarter of 2024 and has been holding on to it since.
Through the end of the third quarter, BYD sold 443,426 battery-electric vehicles. Tesla, however, is yet to report its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/09/41082647/tesla-could-report-slight-q3-deliveries-miss-amid-musks-political-controversies-mun">delivery numbers for the quarter</a>. 
Tech venture capitalist and Deepwater Asset Management Managing Partner&nbsp;Gene Munster expects Tesla&#8217;s deliveries for the quarter to come at around 452,000 units, trailing Wall Street estimates but higher than the 435,059 units the EV giant delivered in the third quarter of 2023.

Chinese Carmaker BYD's September Sales Jump 46% On Rising Popularity Of Plug-in Hybrid EVs

Shares of Chinese electric-vehicle startups Nio, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>), XPeng, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) and Li Auto, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) are rallying<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket"> in premarket trading</a> on Tuesday, signaling a potential rebound from Monday&#8217;s pullback.
The optimism came on the back of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/10/41109111/tesla-rivals-li-auto-xpeng-clock-record-september-deliveries-end-q3-on-a-strong-note"> stellar deliveries these companies reported for September</a> and the third quarter. Most of these companies are now focusing on the low end of the market. XPeng said the first month deliveries of its XPeng Mona M03, an affordable electric sedan launched in late August, topped 10,000 units. Nio, which has so far focused on the premium end of the market has forayed into the mass market with its Onvo brand. Deliveries of the first vehicle launched by the sub-brand, codenamed L60, began in late September.
Given China&#8217;s efforts to stimulate the domestic economy, the EV makers could see demand recovery, which bodes well for their fundamentals.
Incidentally, Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) is scheduled to release its quarterly global deliveries report on Wednesday. Analysts, on average, expect the company to report sales of 465,000 units for the third quarter, with China primarily responsible for much of the upside.

Chinese EV Trio Nio, XPeng, Li Auto Surge Higher In Tuesday's Premarket: What's Going On

Chinese automaker BYD Co Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) is recalling 96,714 electric vehicles owing to risks of a part overheating, the country&#8217;s market regulator said on Monday.
What Happened: The recall population includes domestically produced Dolphin and Yuan PLUS EVs made between November 2022 and December 2023. It is not clear whether all the recalled vehicles are in operation within China or whether some were also exported. 
The capacitor within the column-assist electric power steering (CEPS) system may have cracks which can cause a short circuit, increasing risks of overheating or even fire, the regulator said.
BYD dealers will deploy a physical fix on the vehicles at no cost to the customer to resolve the issue, it added. 
The company did not immediately respond to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga&#8217;s</a> request for comment.
Why It Matters: BYD, the biggest Chinese EV maker, sold 2,328,449 new energy vehicles (NEVs) this year through the end of August, including both passenger and commercial vehicles, marking an increase of nearly 30% from the corresponding period last year. NEV refers to both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
In the last quarter of 2023, BYD&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40768611/elon-musk-shoots-down-reports-of-teslas-china-woes-amid-intense-competition-says-giga-shanghai-is-ru" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">took over American EV giant</a>&nbsp;Tesla Inc.&nbsp;in battery electric vehicle sales with 526,409 BEVs sold as compared to Tesla's 484,507 EVs. However, Tesla&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38068997/elon-musk-dwells-on-wokeness-geopolitics-population-crisis-but-mostly-stays-silent-on-teslas-gloomy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">took back the crown</a>&nbsp;in the first quarter of 2024.
Last week, the company announced that it made its<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/41043074/byd-makes-a-red-yangwang-u9-supercar-for-its-9-millionth-new-energy-vehicle"> 9 millionth NEV- a red Yangwang U9 supercar </a>produced by the company under its luxury car brand Yangwang.

BYD Recalls Nearly 97K EVs Over Concerns Of Overheating Part, Potential Fire

BYD Co. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) on Wednesday made its 9 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) to date, the Chinese EV giant said.
What Happened: &#8220;MAJOR MILESTONE: BYD's 9 Millionth NEV Rolls Off Production,&#8221; BYD wrote in a post on social media platform X. The post was adjoined by a picture of a red Yangwang U9, a supercar produced by the BYD under its luxury car brand Yangwang. The vehicle is priced at 1.68 million yuan ($0.24 million).
&#8220;The YANGWANG U9&#8217;s selection for this milestone underscores BYD&#8217;s advancement in luxury and performance segments,&#8221; BYD said on Wednesday. 
BYD made its 8 millionth NEV merely two months before in July.

BYD Makes A Red Yangwang U9 Supercar For Its 9 Millionth New Energy Vehicle

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) rival plans to establish its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40946478/chinas-nio-says-40-of-its-store-managers-are-ex-tesla">first South Asian assembly plant in Pakistan</a>. The move follows a rejection from India.
What Happened: The plant, expected to be operational by 2026, is a collaboration with Pakistan&#8217;s largest private electricity producer, Hub Power (Hubco). Hubco&#8217;s subsidiary, Mega Motor, will partner with BYD to set up the facility near Karachi's Port Qasim, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/bf1e6817-5313-4b6e-8e47-9e2960d30ecc">reported</a> Financial Times on Sunday. 
Hubco CEO Kamran Kamal said that the goal is for Pakistan to begin exporting vehicles from the plant. The government is encouraging BYD to target markets in Africa and South Asia, including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
"We have big ambitions to be the leading carmaker in this country by the end of the decade," Kamal said. "For any industry in Pakistan to be competitive, they should be focused on the export market."
BYD&#8217;s expansion into Pakistan comes amid broader international growth, with new factories planned in Turkey, Hungary, Thailand, and Brazil. The company is also considering a new factory in Mexico.
BYD declined to comment further on the specifics of the Pakistan project, which is still under discussion. The company aims to sell 100,000 plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars annually in Pakistan by 2030, according to the report.

On the technical front, Nio's stock is currently trading at $5.40, above its 50-day SMA of $4.42, signaling buying pressure.

According to JPMorgan&#8217;s August electric vehicle sales update, Tesla saw a 23% month-over-month increase in sales, driven by rising EV incentives and robust demand.

This is because dwindling American policies prompt global businesses to adopt a wait-and-see approach, reported Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter.
BYD had plans surrounding three locations for a car production facility in Mexico but has ceased vigorously looking for now, the report added.
The postponement is essentially because BYD would choose to delay and notice the outcome of the race between former President Donald Trump&nbsp;and Vice President Kamala Harris in early November.
They added that BYD&#8217;s halted factory plans may still be rejuvenated or could change, and no final judgment has been made.

In February, Stella Li, BYD&#8217;s executive vice president, attended the launch of the automaker&#8217;s Dolphin Mini model in Mexico City, while senior management hosted an event at a BYD-sponsored box during the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix in January.
Mexico has experienced a surge in investment announcements from both Chinese and Western auto manufacturers, including Tesla Inc. However, Tesla&#8217;s planned mega-factory was put on hold in July due to uncertainties surrounding the U.S. election. Republican nominee Trump, who has been endorsed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has frequently threatened tariffs on products made in Mexico.
Tesla had proposed building the plant in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, with an estimated $10 billion investment over multiple phases, Bloomberg added.
The Biden administration is closely monitoring any efforts by Chinese companies to export cars from Mexico to the U.S. and is exploring measures to block such moves if they attempt to bypass tariffs on EVs made in China, according to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai in a May interview, Bloomberg added.

In a statement, Xiang Li, chairman and chief executive officer, said, &#8220;Li L6 has gained widespread popularity among young users, with deliveries exceeding 20,000 for the third consecutive month, further expanding our market share. Notably, our share of the RMB200,000 and higher NEV market grew to 18% in July, outpacing Tesla to become the sales champion among NEV brands in China.&#8221;

Tesla's China Rivals Report Steady August Sales Performance Amid Intense Price Competition: What Investors Should Know

The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40662708/us-economy-roars-in-q2-dow-jones-smashes-records-nvidia-fails-to-amaze-this-week-in-the-market">broader market volatility</a> ahead of and after Nvidia Corp.&#8216;s (NVDA) earnings report weighed down electric-vehicle stocks in the week ended Aug. 30 but company-specific news lent support to some. Market leader Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) snapped a two-week winning run and posted a weekly decline, with fundamental weakness partly responsible for the predicament.
Here&#8217;s a rundown on what happened in the EV space during the week:
Tesla Extends &#8216;Zero-Interest&#8217; Financing In China: After initially announcing that its &#8220;zero-interest&#8221; financing scheme would end by August, Tesla extended it in China until the end of September. This set off alarm regarding further margin erosion, with GLJ Research&#8217;s Gordon Johnson stating that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/08/40550115/horror-show-for-teslas-q3-margins-says-analyst-as-elon-musk-led-company-extends-zero-percent-financi">this will be a &#8220;horror show&#8221; for Tesla's third-quarter margins</a>. He noted that this offer was made available in China for only a month in the second quarter, while in the third quarter, it is set to be applicable for all three months. Johnson also saw the action portending continuing demand problem in one of Tesla&#8217;s key markets.
In another development, Tesla is looking to launch a seven-seat version of its Model Y all-electric SUV in Europe and China in October, CnEVPost <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/08/29/tesla-rumored-to-launch-7-seat-model-y-china-europe/">reported,</a> citing local media reports. The production of it is already underway at the Giga Shanghai plant. Tesla now offers the option in the U.S. with its all-wheel-drive, dual-motor Model Y Long Range, with consumers having to pay an additional $2,000 for it.
The Elon Musk-led company is reportedly planning to host its Oct. 10 robotaxi unveil event at Warner Brothers&#8217; movie studio in Burbank, California. 
Multiple Rivian EVs Damaged In Fire Incident: A fire that started at the parking lot of Rivian Automotive, Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIVN#NASDAQ">RIVN</a>) Normal, Illinois, plant damaged several EVs, The Verge <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/26/24228982/rivian-factory-ev-fire-damage-battery">reported,</a> citing local media outlets. A Normal Fire Department spokesperson told the publication that Rivian is leading the investigation into the blaze, along with its insurance company, with the town&#8217;s fire officials also lending support.
A Rivian spokesperson reportedly confirmed that the plant was unaffected and there were no injuries but said no further disclosures would be made at that point in time.

Lucid&#8217;s Affordable EV Drive: Luxury EV maker Lucid Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LCID#NASDAQ">LCID</a>) is currently working on a Tesla Model 3 rival, CarBuzz <a href="https://carbuzz.com/lucid-will-make-three-affordable-electric-vehicles/">said</a> in an exclusive report. Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand of Lucid, said there will be three affordable models, which he qualified as &#8220;younger&#8221; and &#8220;athletic&#8221; models. &#8220;We&#8217;re working on our mid-size program right now, and of course, these are going to be compact, lighter vehicles with every bit of focus on aero, efficiency, and space,&#8221; Jenkins reportedly said.
The affordable lineup would include a sedan to take on Tesla&#8217;s Model 3, a crossover to rival the Model Y SUV, and a mystery model, according to the report.
XPeng Surges Nearly 15%: Shares of Chinese EV startup XPeng, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) gained about 15% as it kicked off deliveries of its new low-end electric-vehicle model, Mona M03, at the Chengdu Auto Show, which is being held on Aug. 30 to Sept. 8. The company unveiled the all-electric hatchback coupe, at its 10th Anniversary Gala Night held on Tuesday.
XPeng Chairman and CEO&nbsp;He Xiaopeng&nbsp;delivered the Mona M03 to its first owners on the show floor,&nbsp;reported&nbsp;CnEVPost adding that volume deliveries of the model would begin imminently. The company reportedly said <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40646699/teslas-china-woes-just-got-worse-xpengs-model-3-killer-receives-over-30k-orders-in-48-hours-of-l">it received 30,000 firm orders in the first 48 hours of availability.</a> The Mona M03 is competitively priced and costs only about half as much as that of the Tesla Model 3 sedan. 
The stock also received a shot in the arm from Xiaopeng buying shares in the company. 
BYD&#8217;s Ambitious International Plan: Warren Buffett-backed Chinese EV startup BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>) is reportedly looking to generate nearly half of its sales from the overseas market in the future. In an interview with Bloomberg, Executive Vice President Stella Li <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-28/china-s-byd-aims-to-get-half-of-auto-sales-from-global-markets">said</a>, &#8220;Our overseas market will account for a relatively large proportion of our global sales in the future.&#8221; She clarified that nearly half of sales would be made overseas. The company reported this week second-quarter earnings and revenue that climbed 33% and 26%, respectively.
The KraneShares Electric Vehicles and Future Mobility&nbsp;Index ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KARS#NYSE">KARS</a>) ended Friday&#8217;s session up merely 0.05% at $19.08, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag">Benzinga Pro data</a>. What Happened: China issued 16,000 test licenses for autonomous vehicles and opened 32,000 kilometers of public test roads on Tuesday. In June, the government approved nine domestic automakers, including BYD (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDY#OTC">BYDDY</a>) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BYDDF#OTC">BYDDF</a>)&nbsp;and Nio (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>), to test automated driving technologies on public roads, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/30/chinas-drivers-fret-about-robotaxi-push-experts-say-there-will-be-new-jobs.html">reported</a> CNBC. 
Elon Musk aims to get regulatory approval for Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) Full-Self Driving technology by year-end. Many Chinese social media users express concerns that autonomous driving is &#8220;snatching rice bowls&#8221; of drivers. Baidu Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>) self-driving platform Apollo Go operates around 400 robotaxis in Wuhan, aiming to increase to 1,000 by year-end. CEO Robin Li mentioned that scaling will be gradual and could take years.
Taxi drivers in Wuhan petitioned to limit Apollo Go&#8217;s service. A 16-minute robotaxi ride in Beijing costs 10.36 yuan ($1.46), about half the fare of traditional ride-hailing apps.
Experts believe autonomous mobility will mature gradually. Mohit Sharma, a research analyst at Counterpoint Research, noted that job losses will be gradual and governments could help transition drivers to new roles. 
"You will not lose all the jobs in one go. It will be a slow transition phase area by area, region by region,"&nbsp;Sharma said, according to the report. 
An Apollo Go spokesperson stated the firm is committed to creating new job opportunities in monitoring, testing, and data annotation.
