A woman named Allie thought she and her husband were on the verge of making a smart financial move: take most of their IRA savings and throw it at the mortgage. But when she ran the plan by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/46014776/he-makes-150k-she-makes-63k-so-why-did-they-use-a-heloc-to-pay-off-his-45k-debt-suze-orman-weighs-in">Suze Orman</a>, the reaction wasn't what she expected.
"That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my entire life," Orman said on a <a href="https://omny.fm/shows/suze-ormans-women-and-money/ask-kt-suze-anything-how-much-should-i-charge-my-child-in-rent">recent episode</a> of her "Women &amp; Money" podcast.
Orman, known for her direct approach, didn't hold back — and for good reason. While Allie and her husband had done many things right, their next step could cost them far more than they realized.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Late Start, A Bold Plan</h2>
Allie explained that she and her husband were "late starters" when it came to money. They bought their first home in their late 40s, but today they're in a stable place: no debt, a large emergency fund, and pensions and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/45987399/35-year-old-woman-shocked-by-5000-social-security-overpayment-notice-says-she-never-received-benefits">Social Security</a> that will cover most of their income in retirement.
Their main concern is a $1,400 monthly mortgage payment. With about $245,000 left on the loan and $136,000 in a traditional IRA, they figured that withdrawing $130,000 would help them pay off the mortgage in three years. After that, they'd be debt-free and free up $1,400 a month — creating a steady stream of cash flow to match their retirement income needs.
It sounded like a logical move. But Orman says the math — and the tax code — tell a very different story.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hidden Cost Of A Big Withdrawal</h2>
Because Allie's IRA is a traditional account, any withdrawal is considered taxable income. So taking out $130,000 in a single year could come with a hefty tax bill.
"If you take out $130,000 you&#8217;re going to owe approximately — let&#8217;s say just you and your husband make $60,000 a year…You would owe approximately $26,000 in taxes," Orman explained. Then she added that there's state tax. In Virginia, that could be another $8,500.
Altogether, that's $34,000 in taxes — money the couple may not have set aside. And that doesn't include what might happen if the withdrawal pushes them into a higher tax bracket or affects their Medicare premiums.
Orman's key question: where is that $34,000 going to come from?
"You can't take it from the IRA because you want that $130,000 to go towards your mortgage, so $34,000 has to be somewhere else," she said. But if you don&#8217;t have that, then you have to take out even more. It&#8217;s just nuts."

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Better Path Forward</h2>
Orman urged the couple to take a step back and consider the long-term implications. If they simply left the money in the IRA and invested it wisely, she said, it could grow to around $200,000 in the next seven to nine years.
That's a big difference from spending nearly all of it now and losing a large chunk to taxes.
"You&#8217;re thinking in theory is correct, but in reality it isn&#8217;t how it works," Orman told Allie.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Others Can Learn</h2>
For others nearing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/06/46024300/is-your-retirement-plan-just-a-hope-and-a-401-k">retirement</a>, the lesson is clear: don't make big financial moves without looking at the full picture — including taxes. Subscriptions came up repeatedly. &#8220;Having multiple subscriptions and getting comfortable about those price raises,&#8221; one post read. &#8220;Those things creep up and up and boom, one emergency, now you&#8217;re behind four more payments.&#8221;
YouTube TV in particular took a beating, with users shocked that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/24/12/42477880/youtube-raises-tv-subscription-rates-by-14-to-83-per-month-citing-rising-content-costs-prices-have-more-than-doubled-in-less-than-6-years">it&#8217;s now $82.99 per month</a>. &#8220;Wow. I thought it was like $30 or something,&#8221; one person replied. Another put it plainly: &#8220;The cost of YouTube TV should be a crime.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Buy Now, Pain Later</h2>

The Real Budget Killer Isn't Big Purchases—It's The $20 Here, $20 There Habits That Quietly Empty Your Account

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed a slight improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Monday.
U.S. stocks settled higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 350 points during the session. Stocks recorded slight gains last week as the S&amp;P 500 fell around 0.2%, and the 30-stock Dow gained 0.02%.
Investors looked past a sharp escalation in the Middle East, where Iran fired missiles at U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq, just 48 hours after American strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
According to Axios, citing Israeli officials, Iran launched six ballistic missiles at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest U.S. military presence in the Middle East. Another missile was reportedly fired at a U.S. base in Iraq.
On the economic front, the S&amp;P Global US services PMI fell to 53.1 in June versus 53.7 in the previous month, and compared to market expectations of 52.9. The S&amp;P Global US manufacturing PMI came in unchanged from the previous month at 52 in June.
Shares of FactSet Research Systems (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FDS#NYSE">FDS</a>) gained around 3.5% on Monday after the company posted results for the third quarter.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with consumer discretionary, consumer staples and real estate stocks recording the biggest gains on Monday. However, energy stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 375 points to 42,581.78 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.96% to 6,025.17, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.94% at 19,630.97 during Monday's session.

One person shared, &#8220;[My sister&#8217;s] last role was $120k a year, and now she has nothing but Louis Vuitton handbags to show for 35+ year career.&#8221;
Others said it&#8217;s not that people don't want to save, it&#8217;s that they simply can&#8217;t. &#8220;Childcare, rent, student loans. We are drowning,&#8221; wrote another. &#8220;If you&#8217;re able to max out all your happy saving things, good on you. Lots of folks can&#8217;t, and it&#8217;s got nothing to do with money burning a hole in our pockets.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Financial Literacy And Systemic Gaps</h2>
Another major theme in the thread was a lack of financial education. &#8220;Schools don&#8217;t teach personal finance and people blow money <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/01/43011673/dave-ramsey-says-stop-trying-to-keep-up-with-the-joneses-theyre-broke-warns-people-are-fake-rich-average-household-debt-is-175075">keeping up with the Joneses</a>,&#8221; one person wrote. Others pointed to cultural influences: &#8220;America runs on spending.&#8221;
Many said they weren't taught anything about retirement growing up. &#8220;I had to read it a few times to understand what OP was asking,&#8221; one person admitted. Another wrote, &#8220;My parents didn't [invest]. So I knew nothing about saving/investing for retirement when I got out of college. I'm late to the game but I'm on it!&#8221;
Some people in the thread tried to clarify that even using just a 401(k) can be enough, depending on the situation. &#8220;A couple only maxing their IRAs for 40 years at 7% annual returns puts it at $3 million,&#8221; one person explained. &#8220;That's in today's dollars too.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Different Lives, Different Priorities</h2>
Plenty of responses focused on the emotional side of money. A truck driver described saving 70% of their income while living on just 20%, noting that the remaining 10% went toward &#8220;3 or 4 vacations for myself each year.&#8221; Others expressed frustration with peers who spend everything, then complain about financial stress.
But not everyone agreed with the tone of the original post. &#8220;You are so arrogant to think that everyone, or most people, who aren&#8217;t able to save money toward retirement are just reckless or irresponsible,&#8221; a person wrote. Another pointed out, &#8220;Life happens to people. For me, it has been cancer and ongoing medical debt. Horrible divorce where I lost so much.&#8221;
A mix of financial constraints, lack of education, psychological stress, and short-term pressures appears to keep many people from saving at all. &#8220;You have to actively go out of your way to properly invest in your retirement, which naturally means like 50% of the population won't,&#8221; one person summed it all up.

Hims &amp; Hers Health Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HIMS#NYSE">HIMS</a>), CEO Andrew Dudum, has accused Novo Nordisk of exerting anticompetitive pressure to prioritize its weight-loss drug Wegovy over patient needs after the abrupt termination of its partnership with a pharmaceutical giant.

What Happened: In an X post on late Monday, Dudum accused Novo Nordisk of misleading the public and attempting to control clinical standards at Hims &amp; Hers.
"In recent weeks, Novo Nordisk's commercial team increasingly pressured us to steer patients to Wegovy regardless of whether it was clinically best for patients," Dudum wrote.
"We refuse to be strong-armed by any pharmaceutical company's anticompetitive demands that infringe on the independent decision-making of providers and limit patient choice."
He reaffirmed that "We will continue to offer access to a range of treatments, including Wegovy, to ensure providers can serve the individual needs of patients."

Why It Matters: In a press release on Monday, Dave Moore, executive vice president of Novo Nordisk's U.S. operations, stated, "When patients are prescribed semaglutide treatments by their licensed healthcare professional or a telehealth provider, they are entitled to receive authentic, FDA-approved and regulated Wegovy."
