Momentum traders are enjoying their best stretch in over a decade, with the strategy's flagship fund outpacing the broader U.S. market by the widest margin since records began — and it's a selective basket of stocks, led by Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), doing <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/screener/top-momentum-stocks">all the heavy lifting.</a>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Momentum Strategy Crushes S&amp;P 500</h1>



The iShares MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTUM#NYSE">MTUM</a>) is up 11.4% year-to-date through June, versus a modest 2% gain for the S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>). 



That nine percentage point lead marks the largest six-month outperformance since MTUM's launch in 2013.



While the absolute performance is below the first half of 2024 — when the AI-fueled rally sent momentum stocks soaring 25% — the relative gap is now wider, as the broader market cooled following U.S. trade tensions and rate uncertainty.



MTUM targets large- and mid-cap U.S. stocks showing strong recent price momentum, adjusting exposure semi-annually to overweight leaders and cut laggards. 



The momentum style has clearly paid off in 2025.

<li>Palantir Technologies has surged 83.4% year-to-date and carries a 3.72% weight in MTUM ETF versus just 0.6% in the SPY.</li>



<li>Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) is up 38.7% with a 4.88% weight, more than quadruple its 1.03% allocation in the SPY. </li>



<li>Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PM#NYSE">PM</a>) has climbed 53.1%, with a 3.25% momentum weight compared to just 0.56% in the broader SPY.</li>



<li>Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>), up 18%, holds a 5.2% position in MTUM versus 3% in the SPY. </li>



<li>GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GEV#NYSE">GEV</a>), up 47.5%, has a 2.13% weight in the momentum ETF, far above its 0.3% SPY weighting. </li>

Together, these five names account for roughly 6.6 percentage points — or over half — of the MTUM's year-to-date return.

The Palantir Effect: Momentum Stocks Are Making A Killing Like Never Before

German stocks are crushing Wall Street this year, recording their strongest outperformance against U.S. equities since 1999 — a market dynamic that last emerged just before the infamous burst of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/stocks-to-buy-now">the dot-com bubble.</a>



Through June 20, Germany's DAX Index has climbed 17.5% year-to-date, while the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) has gained only 1.9%. 



The six-month performance spread between the two benchmarks now stands at nearly 16 percentage points — the highest gap since the second half of 1999.



Currency effects further amplified the gains. The iShares MSCI Germany Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWG#NYSE">EWG</a>) – a U.S.-listed ETF tracking German equities and adjusting for exchange rate moves — has soared 28% year-to-date, as the U.S. dollar weakened 10% against the euro.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Are German Stocks Outperforming?</h3>



A mix of aggressive fiscal expansion, monetary easing, and global investor rotation has put Germany at the center of a rare equity resurgence.



In March 2025, Germany's Parliament approved a constitutional amendment that exempts military and infrastructure spending from the country's strict "debt brake" law. 



This legal shift enabled the government to create a massive €500 billion ($565 billion) infrastructure fund, aimed at financing green energy, digitalization, and regional development through 2035 — all off-budget to bypass constitutional debt limits.



Additionally, Germany committed to raising defense spending well beyond 3% of GDP — aligning with NATO&#8217;s Readiness 2030 and the broader €800 billion ($900 billion) ReArm Europe plan. This military push has sparked investor enthusiasm in defense stocks and industrial suppliers.



At the same time, the European Central Bank has aggressively cut rates by a cumulative 75 basis points during the first half of 2025, bringing the deposit rate down to 2% in June, amid cooling inflation.



Meanwhile, the U.S. market has faced headwinds. President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff push fueled trade uncertainty and triggered a first-quarter GDP contraction, as businesses rushed to import goods ahead of higher duties set for April.



The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged in a 4.25%-4.50% range, despite declining inflation.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rheinmetall Leads The Charge</h3>



A handful of key outperformers have driven Germany's stock rally.



Defense heavyweight Rheinmetall AG (OTCPK: RNMBF) is up a staggering 181% year-to-date, contributing 356 basis points to the DAX's total year-to-date return. 



Other top gainers include Siemens Energy AG (OTCPK: SMEGF), up 71.7%, Commerzbank AG (OTCPK: CRZBY), up 83%, and Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>), which has gained 47%, each providing significant contributions to index performance.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">History Echoes 1999?</h3>



The last time German stocks outpaced their U.S. counterparts this sharply was in late 1999. Then, too, global investors rotated into European equities amid optimism about reforms and tech-driven growth. 



Yet that outperformance came at the height of global market euphoria: the S&amp;P 500 peaked at 1,550 in March 2000, then plunged 45% over the following three years. 



Whether 2025's surge ends in sustained growth or a speculative overshoot remains to be seen. 



But for now, Germany is among the leaders in global equity markets — and echoing the late 1990s in ways that seasoned investors may not want to forget.

Rocket Lab USA (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RKLB#NASDAQ">RKLB</a>) is a $12 billion manufacturer of the Proton, Electron, and Neutron space vehicles, which have a variety of uses, ranging from payload launches to reusable rockets. The company saw its stock reach a new all-time high in January, but it shed most of those gains in the following months as tariff uncertainty gripped markets. But after a 50% haircut, the stock is once again approaching all-time highs, and there's still time to ride the momentum based on the technical signals.

After dipping from $30 to $15 in just two short months, the stock has been slowly rallying back. The share price finally breached the 50-day MA toward the end of April and has been using that level as support ever since. The company reported a slight EPS miss in its Q1 2025 report released May 8, but revenue grew 32% YOY. The company announced a new contract with the Department of Defense for the Neutron system with a $5 million assurance task order. Following the report, analysts at Roth Capital, Cantor Fitzgerald, and Stifel boosted price targets to $35, $35, and $34, respectively, meaning they expect the stock to hit new all-time highs within the next 12 months. The share price appears to have bounced off the 50-day MA once again, and with the RSI under 70, this could be a good spot for a new entry.

4 Uptrending Stocks With Strong Momentum

Shares of Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) fell for 10 straight trading sessions, from June 3 to June 17, before finally snapping its streak, and posting a 0.89% gain on Wednesday, June 18.

United Airlines Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>) and American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) have suspended flights to the Middle East as the conflict between Iran and Israel continues after Israel launched missiles at Iran on June 13, 2025.



What Happened: United Airlines has announced it will suspend flights from New Jersey's Newark airport to Dubai indefinitely due to the conflict, while American Airlines will suspend flights from Philadelphia International Airport to Doha, Qatar, CBS reported <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-airlines-suspend-middle-east-flights-iran-israel/">on</a> Thursday.&nbsp;



A spokesperson for American Airlines said that the suspension of flights will last until at least June 22, the report suggests.



Why It Matters: The move comes in as the conflict between the two countries has escalated. U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Iran <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/06/46017426/trump-gives-iran-2-weeks-to-strike-a-deal-or-face-us-military-action">to strike a deal</a> with the U.S. or it will face military action. Trump had left the G7 Summit in Canada earlier than scheduled due to the conflict.

Amid Iran-Israel Conflict, United, American Airlines Suspend Flights To The Middle East

Financial commentator Peter Schiff expressed his intent to launch a gold-backed stablecoin Thursday, questioning the value of those backed by the U.S. dollar.



What Happened:&nbsp;Schiff responded to a comment on X that he should launch a gold-backed stablecoin.



&#8220;They already exist. But I&nbsp;do intend to launch my&nbsp;own,&#8221; Schiff replied. Many users soon converged on this post, with some even suggesting names for the initiative, such as SchiffCoin, while others called it a genuinely &#8220;good idea.&#8221;



It wasn&#8217;t immediately clear whether Schiff was making a joke or genuinely interested in tying cryptocurrency to the asset he passionately supports. Benzinga reached out to entities connected to Schiff, such as SchiffGold, to gather additional information. The article will be updated when they respond.

Peter Schiff Says He Intends To Launch Gold-Backed Stablecoins, Deems Dollar As A 'Flawed' Fiat Currency

U.S. futures were trading lower on Friday after a day&#8217;s break on Thursday. Futures of major benchmark indices were trading lower.



Investors stayed on edge due to the continuing Iran-Israel conflict and the possibility of U.S. intervention, especially after the White House announced President Donald Trump would decide within <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/crypto/25/06/46018884/bitcoin-ethereum-dogecoin-rangebound-as-white-house-says-decision-on-iran-israel-conflict-in-two-weeks-analyst-says-this-is-the-right-combination-for-bullish-btc-momentum-to-retur">two weeks</a>.



Both the NYSE and Nasdaq were closed Thursday for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/06/46010720/are-markets-open-on-juneteenth-this-year-heres-whats-open-and-whats-closed-on-june-19">Juneteenth</a> but will reopen Friday for regular trading. 



The 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.40% and the two-year bond was at 3.94%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 91.7% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its July meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, were slightly lower in premarket on Friday. The SPY was down 0.49% at $594.51, while the QQQ declined 0.22% to $527.84, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.



Cues From Last Session:



On Wednesday, most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended in the red, with energy, materials, and communication services stocks seeing the largest declines.



Conversely, information technology and utilities shares defied the broader market downturn, closing the session with gains.



U.S. stocks overall finished mixed, after the U.S. Federal Reserve l<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/46011863/jerome-powell-blames-trump-tariffs-for-inflation-analyst-claps-back-says-fed-is-overplaying-the-card">eft interest rates unchanged</a> at its recent meeting. 



Guild Holdings Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GHLD#NYSE">GHLD</a>) shares surged over 25% after announcing a definitive agreement for acquisition by a fund managed by Bayview Asset Management.



Economically, U.S. initial jobless claims decreased by 5,000 to 245,000 in the week ending June 14, aligning with estimates. However, U.S. housing starts dropped 9.8% month-over-month to an adjusted annual rate of 1.256 million units in May.



The Dow Jones index ended 44 points or 0.10% lower at 42,171.66, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell 0.031% to 5,980.87. Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.13% to 19,546.27, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, gained 0.52% to end at 2,112.96.

Insights From Analysts:



According to the Senior Global Market Strategist at Wells Fargo, Scott Wren, &#8220;volatility creates opportunities,&#8221; especially when the outlook doesn't call for a recession and an accompanying contraction in earnings.



&#8220;When stocks are down because the economy is slowing, buying opportunities often result, particularly for longer-term investors whose goal is building wealth over time. Our view is that the U.S. economy and earnings growth are both going to slow down in coming quarters, but neither the economy nor earnings are going to actually contract.&#8221;



The U.S. usually leads the rest of the world into an economic slowdown or recession and then leads the world back out into a period of growth, he explained, adding that &#8220;We don't think this time will be different. Hard to time, yes, but different, likely not.&#8221;



Wren also suggests investors keep a couple of key points in mind for a summer that could see larger-than-usual market swings.



First, with the S&amp;P 500 Index nearing its year-end target, Wren believes now is the time to trim stock portfolios, not liquidate them. He favors reducing international equity holdings, U.S. small-cap equities, and cyclical equity sectors like Industrials and Materials.



Second, Wren anticipates that once &#8220;summer policy fireworks begin&#8221; and both equity and bond prices retreat, opportunities will emerge to deploy cash into markets and sectors with strong long-term growth prospects. His favorites for these additions include U.S. large- and mid-cap equities, along with large-cap sectors such as Information Technology, Communication Services, Energy, Financials, and Utilities.



Meanwhile, on the Fed&#8217;s Wednesday decision, Jamie Cox, the managing partner at Harris Financial Group, said, "The Fed continues to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/06/46011863/jerome-powell-blames-trump-tariffs-for-inflation-analyst-claps-back-says-fed-is-overplaying-the-card">overplay the inflation story</a> and isn't paying attention to burgeoning demand weakness." &#8211;



Northlight Asset Management CIO, Chris Zaccarelli, on the other hand, explained that the Fed was waiting to see if tariffs increase inflation or the jobs market starts to falter, and whichever part of their dual mandate is impacted first will likely guide whichever direction they take, "although the bias is still toward cutting rates (or at least keeping rates unchanged; not raising rates)."

Asian markets ended on a mixed note on Friday as Australia's ASX 200 and Japan's Nikkei 225 indices fell. While China&#8217;s CSI 300, South Korea's Kospi, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, and India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex indices advanced. European markets were mostly higher in early trade.

US Stocks Likely To Open Lower Amid Iran-Israel Conflict: Accenture, Kroger Stocks In Focus Ahead Of Earnings

A heated debate over the U.S. healthcare system erupted on X, pitting billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban against Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) over the root causes of soaring drug prices.



What Happened: The clash, unfolding as of Friday, has reignited discussions on Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and Big Pharma's tax practices, with the Senate poised to address reform amid rising public scrutiny.



Enter Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner and founder of Cost Plus Drugs, who fired back with a pointed correction.



In a post quoting Warren, Cuban argued that PBMs—not Big Pharma—are the true culprits behind inflated drug prices.



&#8220;PBMs corrupt healthcare,&#8221; he wrote, explaining that these intermediaries control formularies and manipulate prices to maximize rebate revenue, with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45487788/trumps-drug-price-order-hits-pbms-hardest-cvs-cigna-unh-in-focus-as-experts-highlight-racket-and-pricing-distortion">three major PBMs</a> negotiating over 90% of rebates for commercial insurance plans.

Citing data from her Senate Finance Committee role, Warren highlighted how these companies, alongside AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABBV#NYSE">ABBV</a>), Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMGN#NASDAQ">AMGN</a>), and Merck &amp; Co Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MRK#NYSE">MRK</a>), have exploited tax loopholes from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to shield billions in profits.



&#8220;Republicans want to make it worse. Former President Barack Obama shared his concerns on Tuesday about the state of American democracy, warning that the country may be on the brink of authoritarianism.



What Happened: Speaking in Hartford, Connecticut, with historian and Boston College professor Heather Cox Richardson, Obama said, "It is consistent with autocracies," when referring to recent political behavior under the Trump administration, <a href="https://www.ctpublic.org/news/2025-06-17/former-president-barack-obama-headlines-forum-at-the-bushnell">according to</a> Connecticut Public Radio. He emphasized that while the U.S. has not fully moved into authoritarian rule, "we are dangerously close to normalizing behavior like that."



Obama's criticism addressed not only the executive branch but also the Republican Party, citing false narratives about the 2020 election. "In 2020, one person won the election, and it wasn't the guy complaining about it. And that's just a fact, just like my inauguration had more people. I say that, by the way, not because — I don't care, but facts are important," he said.

Why It Matters: Obama also cautioned that several leaders in one of the nation's two major parties are willing to ignore facts: "In one of our major political parties, you have a whole bunch of people who know that's not true but will pretend like it is. And that is dangerous."



"If you follow regularly what is said by those who are in charge of the federal government right now, there is a weak commitment to what we understood – and not just my generation, at least since World War II – our understanding of how a liberal democracy is supposed to work," Obama said.



"There has to be a response and pushback from civil society, from various institutions and individuals outside of government, but there also have to be people in government in both parties who say, &#8216;No, you can&#8217;t do that,'" he added.



Despite his concerns, Obama expressed hope for the country's future. "I'm still the ‘hope' guy. I guess the thing when I'm talking to young people that they need to hear the most is, it is important to be impatient with injustice and cruelty," he said.
